iOS 16 Crash Detection accidentally triggered by roller coasters — here’s what we know

iOS 16‘s Crash Detection feature might promise to be a life-saver, but it appears to be getting confused by roller coasters.

Available on the iPhone 14 range, Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE (2022) and Apple Watch Ultra, Crash Detection uses a variety of sensors to automatically call emergency services if it detects you’re in a car crash. While this is a smart feature that could save your life, some users have found it doesn’t always work, while others found Crash Detection gets accidentally triggered on roller coasters; hardly an emergency situation.

First reported by the Wall Street Journal (opens in new tab), Kings Island theme park in Warren County Ohio has been dealing with a spate of accidental calls to emergency services triggered by crash detection. Including the call that led to the initial report, the Wall Street Journal was given access to six additional calls caused by roller coasters at Kings Island.

The culprit for this Crash Detection misdetection appears to be the sudden deceleration featured on some roller coasters according to expert John Stevenson, who the Wall Street Journal interviewed.

At the end of rides, some coasters can quickly go from 40 mph to 0 mph, including the Mystic Timbers roller coaster at Kings Island, which was the cause for at least one of the false alerts. Such intentional sudden deceleration and the g-forces produced seemingly causes Crash Detection to activate. This is likely due to the very rapid slowing down of a roller coaster as it enters a corners being akin to the sudden deceleration experienced in a car (or other means of transport) crash.

Crash Detection: How it works

While Apple went into slight detail on just how Crash Detection works during its September event, we have got more clarification on the feature in recent days. TechCrunch (opens in new tab) sat down with Apple executives Ron Huang, Vice President of Sensing & Connectivity and Kaiann Drance, Vice President of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing, who gave more insight into just how the feature works.

Turns out, the reason that Apple hadn’t previously stated exactly how Crash Detection works is that it is not always activated by the same parameters. However, it appears that the main sensor involved is the g-force detection in Apple’s accelerometers. The new phones and watches recently unveiled at Apple’s September event can detect up to 256Gs of g-force, which is why Apple only just released this feature that Pixel users have already had for some time.

Aside from the accelerometer, the other key sensor is the internal gyroscope, which can detect quick speed changes. However, Apple users a wide variety of other sensors from GPS to microphones, even Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay. According to Apple any cocktail of these sensors can cause Crash Detection to be activated, as long as multiple data points suggest a crash.

Can I turn off Crash Detection?

Yes, you can! While I would not recommend turning off the feature given that it is a potentially life-saving feature, there is a way to do it. Keep in mind that Crash Detection is designed so that little things such as dropping your phone or low-speed fender benders do not set off a call to emergency services. So the risk of an accidental call is low.

Still, if you’re about to hop on a roller coaster and want to make sure you don’t get scolded for a false alarm, here is how to turn off Crash Detection (opens in new tab). If you are on your iPhone, open your Settings app, tap Emergency SOS and turn off “Call After Severe Crash.”

To turn off the feature on your Apple Watch, pull out your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app, tap Emergency SOS in the My Watch tab and then turn off “Call After Severe Crash.”

That’s all there is to it. If you are still getting used to iOS 16 or your new iPhone 14, make sure to check out our guide on how to use everything new for your iPhone. We even have a look at 11 hidden iOS 16 features you need to try, none of which will get accidentally activated by a roller coaster.

The Concept Art Behind Roller Skating Shooter Rollerdrome

Image: Rollerdrome

One of my favourite Fine Art posts for the year was our showcase for OlliOlli World, so it’s a huge pleasure that we’re able to be looking at art from Roll7’s latest game (Rollerdrome, which is out this week) so soon.

We’ve looked at the game a few times on the site already; it’s basically a deathmatch shooter, which combines skating tricks with third-person gunplay. And where OlliOlli World was an adorable cartoon adventure that looks like it should have its own animated series, Rollerdrome’s cel-shaded aesthetic looks like a comic from the 1980s met a gory sci-fi movie from the 1970s. And I mean all of that in the best way possible.

I should note here that while Rollerdrome is from the same studio as OlliOlliWorld—Roll7—these are actually different artists. Everything you’re seeing below is the work of Kim Hu and Grégoire Frot, and you’ll also find links to both their portfolios in their names below:

Rollerdrome is an indie rollerskating murder game from the OlliOlli crew out on Playstation 4, 5, and Steam starting August 16. WTO strikes global trade deals after ‘roller coaster’ talks

  • Deals reached on food, health and fishing
  • Formerly defiant India joins consensus
  • Package seen boosting credibility of WTO

GENEVA, June 17 (Reuters) – The World Trade Organization agreed the first change to global trading rules in years on Friday as well as a deal to boost the supply of COVID-19 vaccines in a series of pledges that were heavy on compromise.

The deals were forged in the early hours of the sixth day of a conference of more than 100 trade ministers that was seen as a test of the ability of nations to strike multilateral trade deals amid geopolitical tensions heightened by the Ukraine war.

Delegates, who had expected a four-day conference, cheered after they passed seven agreements and declarations just before dawn on Friday.

Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala told them: “The package of agreements you have reached will make a difference to the lives of people around the world. The outcomes demonstrate that the WTO is in fact capable of responding to emergencies of our time.”

Earlier she had appealed to WTO members to consider the “delicate balance” required after nearly round-the-clock talks that have at times been charged with anger and accusations.

The package, which the WTO chief called “unprecedented”, included the two highest profile deals under consideration – on fisheries and on a partial waiver of intellectual property (IP) rights for COVID-19 vaccines.

The accord to curb fishing subsidies is only the second multilateral agreement setting new global trading rules struck in the WTO’s 27-year history and is far more ambitious than the first, which was designed to cut red tape.

At one stage, a series of demands from India, which sees itself as the champion of poor farmers and fishermen as well as developing countries, appeared set to paralyse talks but accommodations were found, trade sources said.

The WTO’s rules dictate that all decisions are taken by consensus, with any single member able to exercise a veto.

‘LOT OF BUMPS’

“It was not an easy process. There were a lot of bumps, just like I predicted. It was like a roller coaster, but in the end we got there,” an exhausted but elated Okonjo-Iweala told a final news conference.

The deal to ban subsidies for illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing or fishing of an over-fished stock has the potential to reverse collapsing fish stocks. Though pared back significantly, it still drew approval.

“This is a turning point in addressing one of the key drivers of global over-fishing.” said Isabel Jarrett, manager of The Pew Charitable Trusts’ campaign to reduce harmful fisheries subsidies.

Okonjo-Iweala said it was the first step after 21 years of talks towards what she hoped would be a more comprehensive deal.

The deal on a partial IP waiver to allow developing countries to produce and export COVID-19 vaccines has divided the WTO for nearly two years, but finally passed. It has also drawn the fiercest criticism from campaign groups that say it barely expands on an existing exemption in WTO rules and is too narrow by not covering therapeutics and diagnostics.

“Put simply, it is a technocratic fudge aimed at saving reputations, not lives,” said Max Lawson, co-chair of the People’s Vaccine Alliance.

One agreement also reached was to maintain a moratorium on e-commerce tariffs, which business says is vital to allow the free flow of data worldwide. read more

Overall, many observers said the deals should boost the credibility of the WTO, which was weakened by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s crippling of its ability to intervene in trade disputes, and set it on a course for reform.

European Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis said the WTO meeting had clinched outcomes of global significance despite unprecedented challenges.

“The profound divergences here amply confirm that a deep reform of the organisation is urgently needed, across all its core functions,” he said, adding he would work to get it agreed at the next ministerial conference due in 2023.
