Time to get flu shot is now, doctors urge: Or ‘roll the dice’

The best time to receive a flu shot is now, medical experts told Fox News, after a historic season low last year has left doctors concerned over patients’ greater susceptibility to flu-related illness.

Prompt uptake of the flu vaccine can also reduce the burden on the medical system and protect at-risk populations from poor outcomes like hospitalization and death. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine every season with rare exceptions.

“It’s perfectly reasonable to get vaccinated right now,” Dr. Stanley Deresinski, clinical professor of medicine and infectious diseases at Stanford University, told Fox News, noting the recommendation to get a flu shot extends through the end of October. “You could roll the dice and get it later with the assumption that the flu season is going to come later wherever you are.”

Experts owe the historic low in flu activity last year to preventive steps taken during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as masking, distancing and hand hygiene. Dr. Gregory Poland, infectious disease expert and director of the Mayo Clinic’s Vaccine Research Group, worries over a potential so-called “tridemic” this year with the overlap between COVID-19, influenza and RSV [respiratory syncytial virus] cases, albeit difficult to predict.

Doctors begin to worry about the flu in October, with cases typically picking up in November-December, while the West Coast tends to see peaks later in the season, Deresinski said. Most flu cases involve the upper airway, with symptoms like sore throat and a persistent cough, but some infections can progress down into the lungs causing pneumonia, which can be lethal, he added.

As of Sept. 18, 2021, the proportion of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness activity remained minimal-to-low across nearly all U.S. states, according to data reported to ILINet, a CDC-led flu surveillance network.

Meanwhile, national positive PCR-tests for RSV, a common respiratory virus typically resulting in mild, cold-like symptoms, increased from about 1% in mid-April to 12.8% by Sept. 25, suggesting an unusual summertime uptick. RSV can be problematic for certain age groups, such as infants because it can cause bronchiolitis, affecting the lower lungs, Deresinski explained, while also noting potential issues for adults with immunocompromising conditions. Most RSV infections resolve on their own and there is no specific treatment for RSV, though efforts to develop medicines are underway, per the CDC. To ease symptoms, the agency advises acetaminophen or ibuprofen, plenty of fluids and consulting a healthcare provider.

The three respiratory illnesses at hand (COVID-19, influenza and RSV) cause overlapping symptoms, and experts told Fox News it’s difficult to reliably differentiate between them, causing a significant issue as the U.S. heads into the colder months and providers faced with testing patients for multiple respiratory pathogens.

“Imagine having COVID and flu together, what does that do to your complication rate, to your risk of dying, especially if you have an underlying disease or you’re elderly?” Poland said.

New findings released Thursday indicated it was safe to receive a COVID-19 vaccine and flu shot at the same time, per a British study, further supporting U.S. health recommendations on co-administration of vaccines.

NFL Week 1 picks: Buccaneers roll over Cowboys in season opener, Raiders shock Ravens on Monday night

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Season 9 of my NFL picks.

Like the TV show “Manifest,” I thought this thing was going to be canceled after three seasons, but the people demanded more, so here I am. Since this is the first week of the season, we’re going to do my favorite Week 1 exercise, which is me telling you how my offseason went. If you’re new here, this is generally the part of my picks that everyone skips due to the fact that my life is mostly boring.

For instance, I didn’t see any UFOs this offseason and I’m starting to think that if I ever want to see one, I need to start spending more time hanging out with Baker Mayfield, who had what I’m guessing was the only UFO encounter by any NFL player this offseason.

I once saw a UFO, but it was at the movie theater while I was watching “Independence Day 2” so I don’t think that counts. As for Baker, I can’t decide if this UFO sighting is a good thing or a bad thing for the Browns, but I do know one thing: No one has ever seen a UFO and then quarterbacked a team to a Super Bowl win in the same season, so unfortunately, I can’t pick the Browns to win it all this year.

So who am I going to pick?

That’s a great question and you can find the answer by clicking here to see my predictions for the entire 2021 NFL season. If you click over, you’ll see my final record predictions for all 32 teams plus who I’m picking to make the playoffs and win the Super Bowl. I really wanted to pick the Buccaneers to repeat and that’s mostly because I wanted to see Tom Brady get drunk and throw the Lombardi Trophy again, but I ended up picking a different NFC team to win it all.

Anyway, before we get to the Week 1 picks, I have good news for the seven of you who emailed in and demanded to CBS that I do more this season. Not only will I be writing this weekly picks column, but I’ll also be podcasting a lot this year. As a matter of fact, you should go ahead and circle every Monday, Tuesday and Friday on your calendar from now until February, because that’s when I’ll be joining Will Brinson and Ryan Wilson on the Pick Six Podcast (Click here to check it out). If that’s still not enough of me, I’ll also be joining CBS Sports HQ every Tuesday morning (8:45 a.m. ET) from now until February to talk about my weekly picks, so remember to set your alarm and be sure to bookmark this link so you can watch.

Alright, I think that’s enough self-promotion for now, let’s get to the picks.

NFL Week 1 picks

Dallas at Tampa Bay

Thursday, 8:20 p.m. ET (NBC)

Latest Odds:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
-8

For the second straight year, it looks like COVID is going to have an impact on the NFL season and it’s likely going to happen in the first game of the year. To be honest, I’m not even sure the Buccaneers are going to have beat the Cowboys this week because COVID might do it for them. Since Aug. 21, the Cowboys have had six players test positive for COVID, including starting right guard Zack Martin, who likely won’t be able to play in this week.

Losing your best offensive linemen for a game is almost always bad, but for the Cowboys, it’s especially bad. I mean, just look at their situation heading into Thursday night: Their starting quarterback (Dak Prescott) is coming off two injuries, he hasn’t taken a game snap in 11 months and in his first game back, he has to go up be against one of the best defenses in football while missing one of his best linemen. If that’s not a recipe for disaster, I don’t know what is.

As for the Buccaneers, I’m not worried about Tom Brady at all, but maybe I should be, because he’s also had some health issues this offseason: Not only did he undergo knee surgery in February, but he also tested positive for COVID at some point in the same month. If this was any other player, I would be slightly concerned about all that, but Brady is literally the healthiest person on the planet. His knee probably healed three hours after surgery and COVID probably willingly left his body after realizing it had a zero percent chance of surviving in there. That kind of recovery is what happens when you drink kale milkshakes every day for nine straight years.

Brady also drank himself silly at the Super Bowl parade, but I have to think he’s recovered from that at this point. Of course, even if he still hasn’t even completely sobered up from the parade, I would still pick the Buccaneers to win because I don’t think Tampa Bay needs a completely sober Brady to beat the Cowboys. Super Bowl champs hosting the kickoff game are 13-2 since the NFL started letting them host the Thursday night opener in 2004 and although the Cowboys do have one of those two victories — they beat the Giants in 2012 — I think the Buccaneers are going to roll.

The pick: Buccaneers 31-20 over Cowboys.

Jacksonville at Houston

1 p.m. ET (CBS)

Latest Odds:

Jacksonville Jaguars
-3

I’ll be honest here: I have no idea what to make of these two teams, I have no idea what the coaches are doing and I have no idea who’s going to win, but I love the fact that two of the worst teams in the NFL are meeting in Week 1. This game is the food equivalent of putting mayonnaise on your pancakes. I have no idea why anyone would ever mix those two things, but if I ever see someone eating them together, there’s a 100% chance I’m going to watch.

This game features two first-year NFL head coaches who both feel like they’re in over their head. On the Jaguars’ end, you have Urban Meyer, who seems like he’s been involved in some sort of small controversy every week since he’s been hired. He also insisted on holding a “quarterback competition” in training camp between Trevor Lawrence and Gardner Minshew, which made no sense, because no one thought it was an actual competition. All Meyer did in the end was take away precious first-team reps from Lawrence so he could give them to a QB who got traded away for a sixth-round pick.

On the Texans’ end, I feel kind of bad for David Culley and that’s because he was thrown into one of the worst situations possible. The Texans are trying to rebuild and the easiest way to do it would be to trade Deshaun Watson, but they can’t do that because of his precarious legal situation. With Watson not suiting up for the Texans this year, it’s almost like they forgot that they had to name a starting quarterback because they didn’t end up naming one until Monday!

If the Texans were playing anyone else, I’d probably pick them to lose, but the good news for Houston is that the Jags are literally the one team they’re capable of beating. The Texans have have won six in a row against Jacksonville and I think they’ll make it seven on Sunday.

Also, I should point out that No. 1 overall picks seem to struggle in Week 1. Over the past 15 years, there have been seven quarterbacks taken with the first overall pick who ALSO started in Week 1 during their rookie season and those quarterbacks have combined to win exactly zero games (0-6-1). That doesn’t seem like a good thing for the Jaguars.

The pick: Texans 34-27 over Jaguars

Cleveland at Kansas City

4:25 p.m. ET (CBS)

Latest Odds:

Kansas City Chiefs
-6

The last time we saw these two teams on the field together came back in January in the playoffs when the Chiefs beat the Browns 22-17 in a game where Patrick Mahomes got injured.

After watching his star quarterback get beat up by the Browns — and then beat up again by the Buccaneers in the Super Bowl — Andy Reid decided to make some major changes this offseason. So what did he do? He replaced EVERY SINGLE PLAYER on his offensive line. I did that in Madden once and went 1-15 the following season, but for some reason, I feel like the Chiefs are going to win more game than that.

At left tackle, the Chiefs traded for Orlando Brown and then they followed that up by signing one of the best left guards in football (Joe Thuney). Am I slightly worried that the three other projected starters on the offensive line are expected to consist of two rookies and a second-year player who will be making his first career start? Yes, but overall, I think the Chiefs’ line is better than it was last year, which is all that matters here.

Before Mahomes got injured last year, he was gashing up the Browns’ defense: He was on pace to throw for roughly 350 yards and I won’t be surprised if he gets near that number on Sunday. Yes, the Browns definitely upgraded their defense this offseason, but with so many new starters, it can be tough to gel quickly, and Patrick Mahomes is the last QB I’d want to face if my defense was trying to build chemistry.

Also, I feel like I should point out the fact that the Browns haven’t won an opener since 2004. That’s 0-15-1 over the past 16 years. (To put this in perspective, every other NFL team has won at least FIVE openers in that span). In light of this information, I feel like it’s in my best interest to keep pick against the Browns in every opener they play in for the rest of time or until their streak ends, whichever comes first.

Speaking of streaks, the Chiefs also have one of their own. Not only have they won six straight openers, but they’ve averaged 37.4 points in their past five openers. I would predict them to score 37.4 points, but I’m told that’s not mathematically possible in the NFL, so I’ll go with 37.

The pick: Chiefs 37-27 over Browns

Green Bay at New Orleans in Jacksonville

4:25 p.m. ET (Fox)

Latest Odds:

Green Bay Packers
-4

Saints coach Sean Payton got married during the offseason, which is the opposite of Aaron Rodgers, who basically spent four months trying to divorce the Packers. It’s now kind of fitting that this game is being played in Jacksonville since both newlyweds and divorcees tend flock to Florida.

If you’re wondering why this game is being played in Jacksonville, it’s because the Saints hand-picked the location after Hurricane Ida forced the game to be moved out of New Orleans. The Saints did some serious homework before making the decision on where to move the game. The game could have been moved to Tampa or Miami or Jacksonville, but the Saints settled on north Florida for five main reasons:

1. Money. Out of those three cities, Jacksonville is the most expensive for Packers fans to get to
2. Don’t want to deal with Buccaneers fans cheering against them. The Saints didn’t want to play in a division rival’s city and possibly have to deal with a stadium-full of Buccaneers fans cheering for the Packers.
3. Didn’t want Packers fans getting a weekend vacation. The Saints thought Packers fans would flock to South Beach for a weekend vacation, so they ruled out a game at Hard Rock Stadium.
4. Rodgers has struggled in Florida. Rodgers has played just seven career games in the state, going 3-4 with a QB rating of 78.1.
5. Florida has insane humidity. If you’ve ever been to Florida in September, you may have noticed that the air is so thick that you feel like you’re going to suffocate anytime you breath. The Saints feel like they have an advantage in high humidity since they practice in that kind of weather in New Orleans.

If Payton spent was as detailed picking the location of his wedding as he was picking the location of this game, then I’m guessing he ended up having the most successful wedding in history.

Of course, the one problem for the Saints is that they went through all the trouble of picking a new location for the game, but I don’t think it’s going to help. Rodgers is at his best when he plays with a chip on his shoulder and I’m pretty sure he dumped an entire bag of chips on his shoulder during his spat with the Packers this offseason.

The one thing throwing a wrench into this game is Jameis Winston. I have no idea if 30-interception Jameis is going to show up this season or if Sean Payton is going to turn him into a powered-up version of Drew Brees, which is completely possible. I mean, Jameis threw for 5,109 yards in 2019 and he did that even though he couldn’t even see the field. Jameis finally got LASIK recently and if he out-duels Aaron Rodgers on Sunday, Winston’s LASIK surgeon better get the game ball.

The pick: Packers 31-24 over Saints

Baltimore at Las Vegas

Monday, 8:15 p.m. ET (ESPN)

Latest Odds:

Baltimore Ravens
-4.5

For the first time since the Raiders moved to Las Vegas, fans will actually be allowed to attend an NFL game at Allegiant Stadium, which should automatically make this the craziest game of Week 1.

This game will be kicking off at 5:15 p.m. PT, which means fans are going to be drinking on the strip all day before making their way to the stadium. I once drank on the strip all day and I’m pretty sure I lost my phone, my wallet and my dignity that day, which is what I’m expecting to happen to every Raiders fan in attendance.

I think what I’m trying to say here is that this is either going to be the best home-field advantage in NFL history or the worst and we’re about to find out which one it is. For the Raiders’ sake, they better hope it’s the best, because they need all the help they can get after going 2-6 at home last season.

A big reason the Raiders were so bad last year is because they had one of the worst defenses in football. To fix that problem, they signed several players (like Yannick Ngakoue and K.J. Wright), they made a trade (for Denzel Perryman) and they spent five of their first six picks of the draft on defensive players.

Of course, the most important move they made on defense was hiring Gus Bradley as their defensive coordinator. The last time we saw the Ravens go up against a Bradley defense came in January 2019 when he was the defensive coordinator for the Chargers. In that game, which the Chargers won in an upset, Bradley befuddled Lamar Jackson and the Ravens by putting seven defensive backs on the field for most of the game. That’s not to say that Bradley will do this again, but he’s one of the smartest defensive minds in football, he’s already schemed a plan to slowed down Lamar once and he’s had all offseason to figure out how to do it again.

If the Raiders do pull off the upset, Mark Davis should go ahead and give his new mansion to Bradley.

Although the Raiders defense isn’t talented enough to completely stop Jackson, I do think Derek Carr and the offense will provide enough points to outscore a hobbled Ravens offense.

The pick: Raiders 34-31 over Ravens

Oh, and uh, if anyone in Vegas sees my wallet, phone or dignity, please let me know. My best guess is that I left one or all three of them at the Britney Spears concert.

I need to plan another trip to Vegas.

NFL Week 1 picks: All the rest

Bengals 23-20 over Vikings
49ers 27-16 over Lions
Titans 27-24 over Cardinals
Seahawks 20-17 over Colts
Washington 26-23 over Chargers

Patriots 19-16 over Dolphins
Broncos 23-16 over Giants
Rams 27-20 over Bears

Last Week

Best pick:  If you just read through these picks while thinking, “Wow, I wish I could read this guy every day,” you’re in luck, because you can! I also write the daily NFL newsletter here at CBSSports.com and you can subscribe by clicking here and entering your email address.

By the way, this is usually the part where I brag tell you about my best pick from the preceding week, but since there weren’t any regular-season games last week, that means there’s no best pick for this section.

Worst pick: Although I’ll have plenty of “worst picks” for this section starting next week, I have nothing for this week. Actually, wait, yes I do. Since this is the worst pick section, this is the perfect time to remind you that my preseason pick to win the Super Bowl last year was the Cowboys, which definitely qualifies as my worst pick of 2020 and possibly ever. Just to be safe, I’m never picking the Cowboys to win anything ever again.

Overall picks record since 2013

After watching my straight-up record plummet for two horrifying seasons (2015-2016), the tide has slowly been turning over the past four years (2017-2020), and I don’t want to sound cocky, but I think I might go 272-0 picking games in 2021, although I’m already starting to regret that Raiders over Ravens pick.

New Delhi:

Actor-producer-singer Priyanka Chopra recently visited the iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum, also known as the Rock Hall, in Cleveland, Ohio with her family and updated her Instagram feed with beautiful pictures from her tour. Priyanka was accompanied by her mother Madhu Chopra, niece Krishna Sky, cousin Divya Jyoti, friend and songwriter Cavanaugh James and musician John Lloyd Taylor to the museum dedicated to rock music. In the pictures, the actress can be seen wearing a printed dress while her mother looks cute in a cream top and black shorts.

In one of the photos, Priyanka can be seen posing with late Grammy-nominated rapper DMX’s jacket. He died in April this year. Priyanka, who is a big fan of rap music, had worked with DMX and after his death, called him “one of her favourite artists growing up” in her eulogy. Did you know that Priyanka also had a crush on late rapper Tupac Shakur, who died in 1996? It’s true. While promoting her 2017 film Baywatch, the actress had even revealed that she wanted to marry the rapper.

Sharing the photos from the hall of fame, which added artists like Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, the Notorious B.I.G. and the Doobie Brothers to last year’s class, Priyanka Chopra wrote: “Thank you Rock Hall for giving me and the family such a wonderful time. China Plans to Ask U.S. to Roll Back Trump Policies in Alaska Meeting

Beijing plans to press Washington to reverse many of the policies targeting China introduced during the Trump presidency in the first face-to-face meeting of senior U.S. and China officials since President Biden’s election, according to people with knowledge of the plans.

The meeting in Alaska on Thursday gives both sides a chance to reset the stormy relationship between the world’s two largest economies, which are at loggerheads over technology development, human rights, trade and military leadership in Asia.

U.S. officials say the meeting is a way to present American complaints about Chinese actions, such as its curtailing of freedoms in Hong Kong, naval expansion in the South China Sea, economic pressure on U.S. allies, intellectual-property violations and cybersecurity incursions. The U.S. also plans to sound out Chinese officials about ways the two countries could work together on issues such as climate change and global health.

China comes with a different agenda that has little overlap with Washington’s, a sign of how far apart the two sides are and how difficult it will be to repair the relationship.

Yang Jiechi, a member of the Communist Party ruling body, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi plan to urge Secretary of State

Antony Blinken

and national security adviser Jake Sullivan to drop sanctions and restrictions on Chinese entities and individuals put in place by the Trump administration, said the people with knowledge of the plans.

The Chinese officials also plan to propose re-establishing regular high-level meetings between the two sides and scheduling a virtual summit between Chinese leader

Xi Jinping

and Mr. Biden in April during a global conference on climate change. The White House declined to comment on the prospect of such a meeting.

China’s broad agenda reflects a greater confidence by Beijing, which in the past has used high-level meetings mainly to react to U.S. initiatives. “China feels that it has the wind at its back, that the East is rising and the West is fading,” said

Daniel Russel,

a former Obama State Department official.

The measures China wants reversed include limits on American sales to Chinese firms such as its telecommunications company Huawei Technologies Co. and chip maker

Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp.

; visa restrictions on Communist Party members, Chinese students and state-media journalists; and closure of the Chinese Consulate in Houston. Beijing has retaliated in kind, hitting American entities and individuals with similar penalties.

Should those restrictions be removed or relaxed, China would consider eliminating its own countermeasures, said the people with knowledge of the Chinese plans.

Messrs. Yang and Wang plan to propose a new framework for setting up recurring, annual meetings between the two powers to hash out differences in economic, trade, security and other areas. The so-called strategic dialogue format was put in place during the George W. Bush administration and continued through the Obama years, when Messrs. Blinken and Sullivan were top foreign-policy officials.

President

Donald Trump

abolished the mechanism because his advisers said that China used it to tie up the Americans in endless discussions. The Biden administration has shown no interest so far in re-establishing the talks.

A senior Biden administration official played down expectations that the Alaska meeting would lead to any agreement. The official described it as a one-off meeting that didn’t portend “the resumption of a particular dialogue mechanism or the beginning of a dialogue process.”

Beijing also may not expect any concrete results, said Mr. Russel, the former Obama official, who is now vice president at the Asia Society Policy Institute, a think tank. Rather, the Chinese “will attempt to gain a better understanding of where the Americans are thinking the relationship will go and what might be possible,” he said.

So far, the Biden administration has continued some of Mr. Trump’s policies, including on Tuesday expanding sanctions against Chinese officials who it says have undermined Hong Kong’s autonomy from Beijing.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Commerce Department served subpoenas on multiple Chinese companies as part of the U.S. effort to target technology and services that could threaten national security.

Tariffs the Trump administration imposed on Chinese goods aren’t expected to be high on China’s agenda in Alaska, even though Mr. Wang, the foreign minister, in a February speech called for the removal of trade-related penalties.

China started reaching out to Biden aides late last year, though China’s Foreign Ministry said the suggestion for the Alaska meeting came from Washington. “The U.S. side proposed to hold this high-level strategic dialogue, which we think is meaningful,” the ministry told The Wall Street Journal. It didn’t elaborate further, but said, “We hope that the two sides can have a candid dialogue on issues of mutual concern.”

Chinese officials plan to propose using a virtual climate summit attended by global leaders on April 22, which is Earth Day, to schedule a meeting between Messrs. Xi and Biden, the people with knowledge of Beijing’s plans said. Both sides have indicated that they are willing to work together to fight global warming and other climate-related issues, though the U.S. is wary that China will try to use the climate issue to get the U.S. to back off in other areas.

The two leaders have spoken once since the U.S. presidential election, a session that lasted for two hours, according to Mr. Biden.

Chinese officials indicate that there is no room for compromise on sovereignty issues involving Hong Kong and Taiwan. Mr. Blinken, who will stop in Alaska on his way back from a trip to Japan and South Korea this week, fired salvos at China from Tokyo on Thursday over both issues.

China also plans to propose that both countries create a “vaccine passport” to verify proof of immunization, according to the people familiar with the plans. Chinese officials hope that can help facilitate travel between the two countries.

It could also help China get recognition for its homegrown vaccines. In recent days, some Chinese embassies have said they would facilitate visas for foreigners who have received Chinese vaccines.

Beijing’s broad agenda for the meeting shows the Chinese leadership’s increasing confidence in the party-state system. China’s economy has withstood a trade war with the Trump administration and has been rebounding strongly, helped by its early headway in reining in coronavirus infections. Mr. Xi, the most forceful Chinese leader in recent decades, is enjoying widespread support among the Chinese public, Chinese officials say.

Still, Beijing is eager to move past the turmoil in the U.S. relationship, which has taken a toll on business and investor confidence in the world’s second-largest economy.

The Biden team also feels that it is in a strong position, having passed a $1.9 trillion economic relief package and having started to work with allies on China and other economic issues, the senior Biden administration official said.

The symbolism of the meeting is important, said the official, who noted the importance of having both the secretary of state and the national security adviser represent the U.S. In the past, China has tried to capitalize on splits among American representatives, the official said.

Having Messrs. Blinken and Sullivan at the session will make clear, the official said, “there is not going to be daylight and that the games that China has played in the past, to divide us, or attempt to divide us, are simply not going to work here.”

The U.S. side plans to address the economic pressure China has placed on Australia by curtailing imports after Canberra called for an independent investigation into the origins of the coronavirus. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman this week blamed the tension on “Australia’s wrong words and deeds on issues concerning China’s sovereignty, security and development interests.”

The session will help each side better understand the other, said the senior Biden administration official. “It’s about communicating the areas where we intend to take steps, and it’s about understanding where our Chinese interlocutors are at,” the official said.

PSA: Turn Off The Music In Rock N Roll Racing If You Stream The Blizzard Arcade Collection Online

Licensed soundtrack “not cleared for streaming”

During BlizzCon Online this weekend, Blizzard announced (and released) a three-in-one retro selection comprised of The Lost Vikings, Rock N Roll Racing and Blackthorne.

Just days after the launch of the Blizzard Arcade Collection, Blizzard’s Adam Fletcher has issued a warning about streaming Rock N Roll Racing on platforms such as Twitch. The licensed soundtrack in this particular game is not cleared for streaming, meaning strikes will likely be dished out if it’s not switched off.

According to a story from Kotaku, Twitch went on a purge back in November last year and removed all licensed music and sound effects. It’s become so bad that yesterday’s Metallica concert during BlizzCon was replaced with generic audio.

So be sure to turn off Rock N Roll Racing’s music before you start streaming this collection online. The Blizzard Arcade Collection is available now from the Switch eShop for $19.99. Have you tried it out yet? Leave a comment down below.

Rock N’ Roll Racing Music Might Get Twitch Streamers In Trouble

Yesterday, Blizzard released a collection of the studio’s classic games. But the studio also gave a warning to those looking to stream one of the games, Rock n’ Roll Racing on Twitch: Turn off the music. All of it.

Announced and released yesterday, the Blizzard Arcade Collection contains three classic games: The Lost Vikings, Rock n’ Roll Racing, and Blackthorne. If you plan on streaming this collection, be careful when playing Rock n’ Roll Racing as the music contained in this arcade racer isn’t cleared for streaming. As spotted by PCGamesN, this PSA came via a tweet from Adam Fletcher, a community development lead at Blizzard. “If you choose to stream, please do so with the music turned off,” warned Fletcher.

The new version of the game included in the Blizzard Arcade Collection contains not just the midi classic rock covers found in the original release, but newly added full versions of these same songs. This is a cool bonus, but it also means this game contains a bunch of licensed music that might get you a DMCA strike on Twitch.

However, it’s not just the new complete versions of the songs that you need to avoid while on Twitch. Fletcher also added that, for now, the old school midi track covers could also get you in trouble too. Considering one of the best parts of Rock n’ Roll Racing is the classic rock soundtrack, this isn’t a great solution.

Back in November, with little warning, Twitch began purging clips and streams from the site that contained any licensed music or sound effects. The situation hasn’t improved much since then.

In fact, during last night’s BlizzCon opening ceremony a pre-recorded performance of Metallica had its music removed and replaced with generic audio by Twitch. This is a good system we have. Everything is working perfectly…

New Zealand to Roll Out Free Period Products to All Students

A study led by Dr. Donovan found that students from New Zealand’s Maori and Pacific Island immigrant communities, who are statistically more likely to be affected by poverty, were also more likely to be unable to afford period products. Fifteen percent of Maori students and 14 percent of Pacific students have missed school because they did not have menstrual items, the study showed.

Sanitary products can cost as much as 15,000 New Zealand dollars, or $10,800, over a person’s lifetime, said Miranda Hitchings, co-founder of Dignity NZ, a for-profit organization that provides free sanitary items to schools, youth and community organizations.

“That is a significant cost that could be part of a student loan, or a house deposit,” she said. “But because of the gendered cyclical nature of poverty, it’s another thing that puts women, or people with periods, on the back foot.”

Before local news reports in 2016 shined a light on the extent of period poverty in New Zealand, there was relatively little public awareness of the problem, Ms. Hitchings said.

“We went and talked to schools and found that not only was it real, but it was incredibly prevalent,” she said. “We also found that local people individually, like nurses and teachers at schools, were purchasing products for their students out of their own pockets.”

There has also been a sharp increase in period poverty since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, she said.

A campaign for free period products gained steam in late 2019, when Ms. Hitchings, her co-founder, Jacinta Gulasekharam, and other campaigners submitted a petition with 3,000 signatures to the country’s Parliament calling for free period products for all students.

GeForce Now game streaming starts to roll out Chrome support

If you’d like to try NVIDIA’s cloud gaming service without installing the app, then you may be able to access it via your computer’s browser now. XDA points out that release notes for version 2.0.27 of GeForce Now reveal beta support for the Chrome browser on Windows and macOS, however some users are reporting they’re still on older versions. As far as other platforms like other browsers or Linux, they “may work” but are unsupported for now.

If you’re a customer in the properly enabled group, then simply browsing to the website is enough to get going. NVIDIA has also added way to share GeForce Now by simply sending a link to your friends, a new +Shortcut button to put games right on your desktop, plus support for Apple’s new M1 powered Macs.
