Rockstar To Let Players Produce Their Own Beats for GTA Online

When you hear of Rockstar Games and music, it’s almost like the latter is a synonym of the former. Because music is simply part of Rockstar’s DNA. Sam Houser, the founder of Rockstar Games, is incredibly passionate about anything music-related. Just last year, Rockstar launched a record label in partnership with CircoLoco.

This strong inspiration for music artistry is materializing more evidently within Grand Theft Auto Online in the past two years. Starting with The Cayo Perico Heist update in December 2020, which featured Moodymann, Joy Orbison, Palms Trax, Keinemusik, and cameo appearances of West Coast legends Dr. Dre and DJ Pooh.

Rockstar is not stopping any time soon to feature more music-related content. Within the game files of the “Contract” update, Dr. Dre’s VIP Contract is referred to as the first VIP Contract. Suggesting a second VIP Contract may arrive in the future. Plus, a bunch of new, unused for now, parameters were added, within the “Criminal Enterprises” update, to functions associated with the DJ Tracks.

GTA Online Will Let You Make Your Own Tunes

But more importantly, Rockstar’s next grand idea for music? As per a reliable source, Rockstar will let players come up with their own mixes and beats in Grand Theft Auto Online. Similarly, an interesting development occurred with how Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, registered a domain by the name of “rapponator.com” back in October 2020. A decade ago, in September 2009, Rockstar released a music mixer by the name of Beaterator in collaboration with Timbaland, allowing the player to produce their own loops. “The two names surely bear interesting resemblance as Rockstar likes to make references to previous product releases.

This idea has been stewing within Rockstar’s oven for a while. As well as Rockstar considering featuring Michael De Santa for the first time in GTA Online. Just like how half of the Contract update focused on Franklin Clinton and the other half focused on Dr. Dre. We could see a future update with one half focusing on Michael and the other half on making up your own mixes/beats.

Red Dead Redemption 2 fan with nearly 6,000 hours on Stadia begs Rockstar for character transfer

A Red Dead Redemption player with almost 6,000 hours logged on Google Stadia is begging Rockstar to allow character transfers after the news of the service’s closure.

YouTuber @ItsColourTV (opens in new tab) took to Twitter shortly after the news that Google Stadia is shutting down broke out yesterday. “No, you don’t understand how seriously pissed off I am,” the tweet read, alongside a screenshot that shows that they’ve put 5,907 hours into Red Dead Redemption on Google’s gaming service.

“For context: these hours are on Google Stadia and today Google announced they’ll be shutting down the platform,” a follow-up tweet (opens in new tab) reads, “@RockstarGames please let us do a one-time character transfer I am begging you.” If you aren’t aware, once Google shuts down its Stadia service on January 18, 2023, ItsColourTV’s progress will all be erased from existence, meaning they’ll need to start a new save file on another platform – with all 5,907 hours (approximately 246 days) going to waste.

It seems that fellow Red Dead Redemption players felt sympathetic towards ItsColourTV, with many replying to the tweet with suggestions as to how to save this player’s save. One suggested (opens in new tab) that ItsColourTV use Google Takeout – a data downloading service – to transfer their file to PC, to which they replied: “I don’t play story mode.” Rockstar, if you’re reading this, do our guy a favor and let them transfer their character just this once.

If you’re also about to lose your Stadia save data, why not take a look at our games like Red Dead Redemption list for inspiration on what game to move on to.

FBI investigate hacker allegedly behind Rockstar GTA 6 leak

The hacker who claimed responsibility for this weekend’s enormous leak of Grand Theft Auto 6 material is now being investigated by the FBI.

The same attacker also said they were behind last week’s high-profile hack of ride app Uber, which has provided an update on its own investigations.

“There are also reports over the weekend that this same actor breached video game maker Rockstar Games,” Uber wrote in a newly-updated blog. “We are in close coordination with the FBI and US Department of Justice on this matter and will continue to support their efforts.”

Eurogamer Newscast: Were Nintendo Direct and PlayStation State of Play a disappointment?

Uber said it believed the person responsible to be “affiliated with a hacking group called Lapsus$, which has been increasingly active over the last year or so” and which has similarly breached a list of other technology companies this year such as Microsoft, Samsung and Nvidia.

Yesterday, Rockstar issued its own statement on the hack, and admitted it had suffered a “network intrusion” which had led to the leaked information being taken from its servers.

The GTA maker said it was “extremely disappointed”, but that there would be no “long-term effect” on development. No live services, such as Grand Theft Auto Online, were interrupted.

In March this year, BBC News reported on a 16-year-old from Oxford known online as “White” or “Breachbase”, who was accused of being one of the Lapsus$ group’s leaders.

“White”‘s real identity was publicly identified by other hackers, and was one of seven arrested by City of London Police – before all were ultimately released under investigation.

“I had never heard about any of this until recently,” the 16-year-old’s father said at the time. “He’s never talked about any hacking, but he is very good on computers and spends a lot of time on the computer. I always thought he was playing games.

“We’re going to try to stop him from going on computers.”

Huge Grand Theft Auto 6 Leak Shows Woman Lead Driving, Shooting

Image: Rockstar Games

A user on GTAForums, who claims to have also been behind the recent hack of Uber, has just dumped nearly 100 videos online claiming to show development footage of Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto VI, which are currently circulating across pretty much every social media platform.

Matching much of what Bloomberg reported earlier this year—including that the game will co-star a woman and be set in Vice City—the videos are very much in-development footage, with unfinished textures and models all over the place, and code playing out in real-time across many of them. The leaker is currently taking requests asking people what else they’d like to see in more videos.

In one, a white male playable character encounters a racist NPC by a poolside, and as the conversation transpires you can see the code required for the interaction playing out alongside the in-game action. In another, the woman character—I’m only specifying it like this because it would be a series first—explores one of the series’ infamous strip clubs.

This appears to be the new woman protagonist for GTA 6, which is technically a series first, and all the more reason why a leak of this caliber for one of the most anticipated games ever is so unprecedented for Rockstar Games.

There’s also a video showing “passenger shooting mechanics”, illustrated with the player taking an AK-47 to some pursuing police cars, and another that showcases the interior modelling of a car.

One of the more complete videos uploaded shows both characters partnering up to rob a diner, holding the patrons at gunpoint before the police arrive. Others are in rougher shape, and feature little more than a featureless placeholder character moving around an empty landscape acting out combat animations like taking cover.

The legitimacy of these videos is obviously in question. There’s certainly a lot of footage, and faking both the action and the code running at the same time would be a lot of work for an internet prank. But it’s still a leak, and unless Rockstar comments (we’ve reached out and will update if we hear back), we won’t know it’s real until we can match what’s shown here with whatever eventually turns up in GTA VI.

If it is real, then holy shit. Given the status of the game and the amount of footage it would be one of the biggest of all time, right up there with Half-Life 2. So far, though, it’s looking legit: not only are reporters like ex-Kotaku behemoth Jason Schreier saying that Rockstar contacts have confirmed the info to them, Rockstar employees appear to be liking tweets related to the apparent hack. But the wildest part?

The hacker is trying to strike a deal with Rockstar right now, though we don’t know what kind. To stop distributing more material? To ensure that the leaker doesn’t get sued? Whatever the case, this is definitely one of the most unprecedented leaks in all of video game history.

Earlier this year, Bloomberg also reported that the next GTA would attempt to be more “culturally sensitive,” a subtler tonal shift that has already become apparent in the re-release of GTA V. The recent game saw Rockstar remove some transphobic content that had previously been criticized by some fans.

While things are moving fast on the hacking front, and rumors are flying regarding potential scams involving the sale of the source code, fans are busy trying to figure out what is visible in the footage that’s already out there. Already, there are theories about who plays the new lead.

Update 1:55 p.m: Added details regarding the leaker’s shout-out to Rockstar, along with new developments in the story.

Update 7:10 p.m.: Added more details about GTA 6.

A GTA developer claims Rockstar has issued a copyright strike against his prototype videos

Rockstar Games [272 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/companies/take-two-interactive/rockstar-games/”>Rockstar Games has allegedly issued copyright strikes against two videos by original Grand Theft Auto developer Mike Dailly in which he showed old development materials.

In a tweet, the developer, who was one of the founders of DMA Design (now Rockstar North [133 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/companies/take-two-interactive/rockstar-games/rockstar-north/”>Rockstar North) said: “I see Rockstar are going full fuckers mode again, issuing copyright strikes to any GTA video they can find – including both my prototype videos.”

“So now they’re trying to block all release of anyone’s work on a game – and any old development footage.”

The prototype video in question showed off one of the original builds of GTA which was created in the mid-90s when the Dundee-based DMA Designs were still most well-known for the Lemming’s franchise.

Development documentation surrounding the creation of GTA is rare, but several of the original developers who worked at DMA during the series’ early days have posted some behind-the-scenes development videos in recent years.

Dailly’s allegation suggests that Rockstar is currently targeting those videos, though Dailly’s tweet is the first notable public mention of this.

VGC has reached out to Rockstar for comment, and will update this story should it respond.

Grand Theft Auto 6 will take place in an area based on Miami, and may feature a female playable character, it’s been claimed.

Bloomberg reports that the game, which it claims began development sometime in 2014, is “at least two years away”.

“Early designs called for the inclusion of territories modelled after large swaths of North and South America,” the publication states. “The company reeled in those ambitions and cut the main map down to a fictional version of Miami and its surrounding areas.”

Last month, a Rockstar insider who’s accurately leaked information about the company’s games in the past claimed remasters of GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption “were on the table a few years ago” but are no longer planned.

Kotaku later backed up the claims. Citing sources with knowledge of Rockstar’s plans, it said the studio has – temporarily at least – parked the remasters to fully focus on GTA 6.

You’re All Wrong! GTA 6 Won’t Have the Franchise’s First Female Protagonist

Earlier this week, we got our first insight into the development of GTA 6. The game – due out in a couple of years thanks to a more tolerable working culture at developer Rockstar – will apparently plot a Bonnie & Clyde-style story in modern Miami, marking the franchise’s “first female protagonist”. Except it’s not – as pointed out by a few frustrated know-it-alls on Twitter.

We’re not talking about GTA Online’s customisable silent protagonist here either! In fact, all the way back in 1997, the original GTA had four female protagonists – however, they were absent from the PS1 version of the game, which is probable the one most of you played. The characters – Divine, Katie, Mikki, and Ulrika – all featured in the original PC release, as well as the Game Boy Color port. A further two playable female characters, Gretchen and Candy, would also later star in the GBC adaptation of GTA 2.

Of course, those original GTA games are dramatically different to the more modern releases, and the character you selected had basically zero bearing on the plot and gameplay. So, while it’s technically true that the series has had female protagonists before, we’re expecting a lot more depth from the latest game’s lead.

Still, this story should help dispel those nonsense insinuations that Rockstar has suddenly become “woke” – turns out it has been all along!
