California robbery suspect killed store clerk, not charged with murder; victim didn’t act in self-defense: DA

A man accused of killing a California gas station clerk during a “botched” robbery will not face a murder charge because the victim had opened fire on the suspect despite his life not being in danger, officials said Thursday.

James Williams, 36, was killed during an early Saturday morning gunfight with Ronald Jackson Jr., 20, at a Chevron in Antioch, Fox San Francisco reported.

The Antioch Police Department said a gas station employee called to report a person had been shot at the Extra Mile mini-mart just after 2 a.m. When officers arrived, they found a man with a gunshot wound to the head inside the store.

James Williams was shot and killed during a gas station robbery in Antioch, California. The suspect robber and killer will not be charged with murder because he can possibly claim self-defense, officials said Thursday.

“Officers at the scene were able to determine that the victim was an employee-clerk at the service station and was held-up at gunpoint during what appears to be a ‘botched robbery,'” a police statement said.

Williams was working inside the store when he was confronted by two suspects, one of whom was identified as Jackson, who was allegedly armed with a gun. Williams then pulled out his own weapon.

Jackson allegedly ran out of the store, while dropping cigar packages, and was shot. Williams kept firing as Jackson was on the ground before Jackson allegedly returned fire and killed him, the news report said.

“He didn’t deserve this, and he was such a good guy, family man,” Annette Matamoroz, Williams’ girlfriend and co-worker who was in the store when he was killed, told the news outlet.

Jackson was not charged with murder because under the law, the killing could be considered self-defense, authorities said. The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office said Williams pursued Jackson despite the threat of bodily harm or injury had subsided.

“In the eyes of the law, Mr. Williams’ actions ceased to be self-defense when Mr. Williams pursued Mr. Jackson and the other suspect with a firearm — and continued to pursue Mr. Jackson after he shot him,” Contra Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton said in a news release.

“The legal distinction is clear: when your property and life are being threatened, an individual is legally justified in using deadly force in self-defense,” she added. “However, once the threat of harm has dissipated, the victim of a property crime cannot then use deadly force to reclaim stolen property.”

Antioch investigators submitted their findings to the district attorney’s office, which instead “elected to charge Jackson with robbery, possession of stolen property, and a firearm enhancement, but declined to charge him with murder,” police said.

“The members of the Antioch Police Department extend their condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Williams,” the department said.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the district attorney’s office.

Police release images of suspects who shot Brian Robinson

Police have released images of the suspected individuals who shot Commanders running back Brian Robinson.

Robinson, a rookie selected in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, was shot multiple times Sunday evening as part of an attempted armed robbery. He was rushed to a local hospital and is in “good spirits,” according to Washington’s head coach Ron Rivera. Robinson posted on Instagram on Monday that a surgery “went well!”

Images of two suspects were captured by a nearby surveillance camera, along with photos of the car they were last seen in. The car the suspects fled in has been recovered, along with a gun.

Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s First District seek the public’s assistance in identifying and locating suspects and a vehicle in reference to an Assault With Intent to Rob while Armed (Gun) offense that occurred on Sunday, August 28, 2022, in the 1000 block of H Street, Northeast,” an announcement from the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington D.C. said.

Robinson’s surgery on Monday treated gunshot wounds to his glute and lower leg, according to NFL Network.

After a breakout senior season at Alabama, the 23-year-old Robinson was expected to compete with Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic in the Commanders’ backfield. Now, his playing future is uncertain.

“At approximately 5:28 p.m., the suspects approached the victim at the listed location,” the announcement continued. “The suspects brandished handguns and attempted to rob the victim. During the robbery attempt, the suspects fired their handguns, striking the victim. The suspects fled the scene in a vehicle without obtaining any property. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.”

Washington Commanders’ Brian Robinson Jr. says ‘surgery went well’ after he was shot in possible attempted robbery or carjacking

Robinson shared the news in a brief message on his Instagram stories on Monday, writing, “Thanks for the prayers! God is Great!”

Robinson suffered two gunshot wounds to his lower extremities and was taken to a local hospital, Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Dustin Sternbeck said. The shooting happened in the 1000 block of H Street NE, police said. Two suspects fled the scene and officers recovered a firearm nearby, Sternbeck said.

The Commanders confirmed the incident in a statement Sunday evening.

“He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is currently being treated at the hospital, where Team officials are on-site with him. We ask that you please respect Brian’s privacy at this time,” the Commanders said.

Commanders head coach Ron Rivera visited with Robinson, who he said was in “good spirits.”

“He wants his teammates to know he appreciates them all for reaching out and he loves them all & will be back soon doing what he does best,” Rivera said on Twitter.

CNN has reached out to the NFL for comment.

Robinson Jr. was drafted in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of the University of Alabama. He did not play in the team’s final preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens Saturday night.

Commanders rookie Brian Robinson Jr. shot multiple times in attempted robbery; team releases statement

USATSI

A day after sitting out the Commanders’ preseason finale in anticipation of a big role this regular season, rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr. was shot multiple times as the victim of an attempted robbery, according to NFL Media and NBC Sports Washington. A third-round draft pick out of Alabama this spring, Robinson is in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries after an apparent carjacking attempt, per ESPN.

The 23-year-old Robinson is now hospitalized after at least two bullets struck his lower body during the attempted robbery, according to Tom Pelissero. His immediate on-field future is unclear.

The Commanders released the following statement:

We have been made aware that Brian Robinson Jr. was the victim of an attempted armed robbery or carjacking in Washington, D.C. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is currently being treated at the hospital, where team officials are on-site with him. We ask that you please respect Brian’s privacy at this time.

Robinson emerged this summer as the apparent front-runner for Washington’s top running back job, even with incumbent Antonio Gibson coming off a 1,000-yard season. He totaled 16 touches during the Commanders’ first two preseason games, rotating with Gibson as the club’s first-team ball-carrier throughout training camp. At the very least, he was expected to open 2022 as a regular complement to Gibson in both the run and pass game.

A two-time national champion at Alabama, Robinson spent five seasons with the Crimson Tide before entering the NFL, most notably eclipsing 1,400 rushing yards as a full-time starter in 2021.

In Robinson’s absence, veteran J.D. McKissic, a pass-catching specialist, is likely to see an uptick in touches alongside Gibson.

Kim Kardashian thief says he feels NO guilt for gunpoint Paris robbery

One of the perpetrators of Kim Kardashian’s 2016 Paris robbery has spoken out, declaring he feels no guilt over the crime.

Yunis Abbas is one of 12 elderly men arrested for the burglary, in which Kardashian was bound at gunpoint while the band of thieves now known as the ‘grandpa robbers’ plundered $10 million worth of jewelry from her luxurious hotel suite.

In a new interview with VICE News, Abbas confirmed that he developed the idea for the robbery after seeing Kardashian repeatedly flaunt her jewelry on social media.

‘Since she was throwing money away, I was there to collect it, and that was that. Guilty? No, I don’t care,’ he said with a chuckle. ‘I don’t care.’

He also divulged details of the robbery itself, alleging that Kardashian’s ‘secretary’ attempted to call for assistance – but dialed 911 despite being in France.

‘I don’t care’: Yunis Abbas, one of the perpetrators of Kim Kardashian’s 2016 Paris robbery has spoken out, declaring he feels no guilt over the crime

Before: Kim was bound at gunpoint and robbed of $10 million worth of jewelry in October 2016 while attending Paris Fashion Week, where she is pictured at the Balenciaga show

When asked about celebrities posting about their valuables on the internet, Abbas defiantly argued: ‘They should be a little less showy towards people who can’t afford it. For some people, it’s provocative.’

Kardashian reportedly experienced flashbacks after the robbery, during which she feared she might be raped or murdered.

Abbas acknowledged: ‘You don’t come out of it unscathed. We didn’t expect this. Of course she must have been traumatized.’

When the crime was committed in October 2016, all the men were in their 60s or 70s, prompting the French media to dub them the ‘grandpa robbers.’

Dazzling: One of the pieces Abbas and his gang took was the $4 million 20-carat Lorraine Schwartz engagement ring Kardashian was given by Kanye West

‘Provocative’: When asked about celebrities posting about their valuables on the internet, Abbas defiantly argued: ‘They should be a little less showy towards people who can’t afford it’

One of the pieces Abbas and his gang took was the $4 million 20-carat Lorraine Schwartz engagement ring Kardashian was given by Kanye West.

‘I went on the internet, and it’s true, I saw her jewelry, I saw her ring, I saw that she showed it everywhere, and we knew this information through social media,’ Abbas said while explaining the crime to VICE News.

Back then he was less aware of her than of her husband ‘but I saw one of her shows where she threw her diamond in the pool in that episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. I thought: “She’s got a lot of money. This lady doesn’t care at all.”‘

Abbas may have been referring to a notorious episode in which Kardashian lost a $75,000 diamond earring in the ocean in Bora Bora.

Defiant: ‘Since she was throwing money away, I was there to collect it, and that was that. Guilty? No, I don’t care,’ he said with a chuckle

Whoops: Abbas told VICE that his arrest stemmed from the fact that he left some of his DNA on the concierge while tying him up

She worked herself up into hysterics over the earring, exasperating her elder sister Kourtney Kardashian, who drawled: ‘Kim, there’s people that are dying.’

The ‘grandpa robbers’ discovered online that Kim Kardashian was headed to Paris Fashion Week in October 2016 ‘so we went there to do some reconnaissance.’

They successfully traced her to the Hotel De Pourtales in the 8th arrondissement, and according to Abbas they ‘were there from midnight’ the night of the crime.

Kardashian’s sisters had left the hotel that evening with their bodyguard Pascal Duvier in tow, leaving her alone and vulnerable in her suite.

Alone: The robbers successfully traced her to the Hotel De Pourtales in the 8th arrondissement, where reporters are pictured after the crime

‘We got in through the little door that was open on the inside,’ Abbas said. ‘As soon as we got in, we took control of the concierge. We overpowered him. We tied him up. But then we looked for the keys of the bedroom she stayed in.’

He explained: ‘I stayed downstairs, but my two colleagues went upstairs with the concierge to go to Madame Kardashian’s room.’

The men who breached her suite then tied her up, gagged her and threw her in the bathtub as she reportedly pleaded for her life.

When Abbas’ ‘colleagues’ returned downstairs, he said: ‘Madame Kardashian’s secretary called for help. But she called 911 in the United States, which scared us, which made them lose a lot of time. And when we got out, there was a bunch of police outside who didn’t know anything about the robbery.’

Vulnerable: Kardashian’s sisters had left the hotel the evening of the robbery with their bodyguard Pascal Duvier in tow; Kardashian and Duvier are pictured just one day before

While making his getaway by bicycle, Abbas dropped a 30,000€ diamond-encrusted cross, and France 24 reports that hours later it was discovered by a passerby.

However Abbas told VICE that his arrest stemmed from the fact that he left some of his DNA on the concierge while tying him up, allowing the police to track him down, a task made easier by the fact he ‘already had a record.’

Abbas then spent 22 months in prison but was granted a release on health grounds and has since published a memoir of the robbery.

Aomar Ait Khedache, one of the men arrested for the heist, told French police the engagement ring was the only surviving piece of Kardashian’s stolen jewelry.

Hand in hand: Kardashian is pictured with her elder sister Kourtney Kardashian (right) in Paris just one day before the robbery took place

In early 2017, Le Monde obtained a transcript of Khedache’s police interview, where he explained that his gang melted down and sold off the rest of the spoils.

‘For the jewelry never to be recognized, we made a common decision to melt it,’ he said, claiming their loot was taken to the diamond trade hub of Antwerp.

Kardashian later told David Letterman the experience left her so ‘paranoid’ for a year that she would have ‘half a dozen’ guards constantly posted at her Calabasas home.

Last year, five years after the robbery, she revealed she was still so scarred by the incident that she no longer keeps any jewelry at home, even in a safe.

Trauma: Kardashian later told David Letterman the experience left her so ‘paranoid’ for a year that she would have ‘half a dozen’ guards constantly posted at her Calabasas home

‘I can’t sleep if I have jewelry in my safe, or money, or anything at my house. I just don’t live my life like that,’ she said in a Keeping Up With The Kardashians special.

She insisted ‘no expensive items ever come’ to her home and ‘As far as jewelry, if I’m wearing something, it’s borrowed. It’s fake.’

Kardashian claimed she has become a ‘completely different person’ after the robbery ‘in the best way’ by dialing back her materialism.

Prior to the ordeal she ‘had to have the coolest car, the best rims, the best outfit and I thought that I was the s**t because of that. I thought that made me,’ she said.

Terrified: Last year, five years after the robbery, Kim revealed she was still so scarred by the incident that she no longer keeps any jewelry at home, even in a safe

‘The things I valued before that happened were genuinely completely different than what I value now,’ said the reality star, who is now a mother of four. ‘It’s fun to get dressed up and all this, but like, things don’t make me.’

Last November the 12 ‘grandpa robbers’ were indicted on various charges in connection with the Paris jewel heist that sent shockwaves around the world.

French law shields Kardashian from having to be cross-examined, meaning she will not have to face her accused assailants in court.

Elderly California store owner fires at armed robbery suspect who shouts, ‘He shot my arm off!’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

An 80-year-old California liquor store owner was caught on video opening fire at a would-be robber with a shotgun, prompting the suspect to run out of his business screaming “he shot my arm off!”

The self-defense act happened early Sunday at Norco Market & Liquor in Norco, just east of Los Angeles, after the store owner was confronted by a gunman wielding a rifle.

“In this case, a lawfully armed member of our community prevented a violent crime and ensured their own safety, while being confronted with multiple armed suspects,” the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office said.

Surveillance footage obtained by Fox11 LA shows the masked suspect pointing a rifle at the store owner moments before the owner reached behind the counter, grabbed a shotgun and fired in the suspect’s direction.

The suspect is then heard screaming “he shot my arm off!” as he ran out of the store and into a getaway vehicle outside.

The 23-year-old gunman – who has not been publicly identified – was later tracked down at a local hospital “suffering from a gunshot wound consistent with a shotgun blast,” according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.

He remains in critical but stable condition and will be booked into jail upon his release.

The other men police say were inside the getaway vehicle, who also were found at the hospital, were identified as Justin Johnson, 22, of Inglewood, Jamar Williams, 27, of Los Angeles, and Davon Broadus, 24, of Las Vegas.

The BMW SUV they were traveling in was previously reported stolen and found to contain numerous stolen firearms – and now each of those men are facing charges of robbery and conspiracy and are being held in lieu of $500,000 bail, the sheriff’s office added.

The 80-year-old store owner, meanwhile, is recovering at a hospital after suffering a heart attack shortly after the attempted robbery, according to Fox11 LA.

Gunfire from robbery during drug deal hits 2 ‘unintended targets’ near Theater District, including a ‘Moulin Rouge!’ stagehand

Stray bullets from a robbery during a drug deal wounded two people in the Loop over the weekend, including a longtime stagehand who was scheduled to work on a performance of “Moulin Rouge!” that was later canceled, police and witnesses said.

After the 5 p.m. shooting in an alley in the 100 block of North Wabash Street, the Sunday evening performance of the musical at the nearby Nederlander Theatre was called off.

Ryan Bush, a stagehand at the Nederlander, said in an interview with the Sun-Times Monday that he was with his co-worker when the “frightening” incident unfolded.

“My buddy ended up getting in the crossfire,” he said.

Police said both victims were “unintended targets” of the shooting, which apparently stemmed from a drug deal between two groups of people at a nearby Taco Bell, police said. An argument broke out and someone “implied a weapon” and robbed the others, officials said.

The victims of that robbery then chased the offenders into an alley near the Chicago Theatre.

“The people who were robbed took out a firearm and started discharging at the individuals who took something from them,” Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said at a Monday news conference.

Bush said he and his co-worker had gone out to grab dinner between matinee and evening performances at the Nederlander when they heard gunfire and ducked.

“There was two guys running down the alley, running westbound toward State Street, and somebody was shooting at them,” he told the Sun-Times.

But Bush’s fellow stagehand — a 55-year-old from Elmhurst — couldn’t avoid the bullets and was struck in the right ear, police reports said. Bush said the bullet also pierced his friend’s neck.

Another witness, a bartender from the Chicago Theatre, also told officers that he saw three males running through the alley when he heard a pair of “pops,” leading the bartender to hide between trash cans, according to the reports. He then saw someone fire a handgun twice.

The second gunshot victim, a 27-year-old man from Gold Coast, was found with a wound to the hand, the reports state. He told officers he was walking with his girlfriend when he was struck.

Both victims were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in fair condition, police said. Neither saw the shooter, who later ditched his jacket near the State/Lake Red Line stop, according to a police report.

No arrests were reported. Deenihan told reporters that police were reviewing video on where “both groups went.”

Bush, a longtime stagehand who lives in Northwest Indiana, said it was a relief to get a text message from his co-worker early Monday saying he was “doing better” after being discharged from Northwestern.

“That’s my No. 1 guy there. He’s a great guy, stage hand, been in the business for 30-plus years,” Bush said, adding that his co-worker is a grandfather “just looking to retire.”

The shooting wasn’t specifically given as the reason for canceling Sunday evening’s performance of “Moulin Rouge!” An official statement attributed it to a “disturbance.”

Police said they deployed additional resources to the Theater District.

“We will continue to monitor the area and work closely with the Cook County sheriff’s police to enhance safety in our Theater District,” the department said in a statement.

Armed Robbery Suspects Fleeing Las Vegas are Caught in LA After Pursuit – NBC Los Angeles

Two men wanted in connection with armed robberies in Nevada led California Highway Patrol officers on a high-speed pursuit from San Bernardino County to downtown Los Angeles Saturday night.

San Bernardino County CHP officers were reported to have begun the chase in Barstow sometime after 8 p.m.

The suspects had been linked to armed robberies in Henderson, Nevada, but the connection was not immediately made public.

The pursuit entered Los Angeles County at 8:46 p.m. on the westbound 210 Freeway, where the suspect vehicle hit speeds of 90 mph and wound up with the two men bailing out of the car at 9:25 p.m. on the southbound 110 Freeway at Eighth Street, said CHP Officer Patrick Kimball.    The men were seen running across lanes of traffic from the southbound to northbound side. Video showed one suspect taken into custody near a parking garage as the search continued for a suspect believed to have jumped off the freeway from a bridge.

That man was located on the ground with at least one broken ankle and taken to a hospital, Kimball said. It was unclear if any weapons or stolen property was recovered.

The names of the suspects were not immediately released, nor was a description available concerning the armed robberies.
