EA Roasted Over Single Player Tweet

EA

A decade ago, Electronic Arts (EA) won the dubious honour of being the most hated company in America – twice. While it has slipped from the rankings since it never seems too far from the occasional controversy or regular criticism for its practices.

This week the company, tried to get in on a meme which is essentially: “They’re a 10, but [insert something bad]”. To do so though, their official EA Twitter account sent out: “They’re a 10 but they only like playing single-player games.”

The tweet drew immediate reaction not just from the public at large, but plenty of major game industry players including some of its employees – and seemingly none of the many thousands of responses were kind.

The post struck a nerve with many, including Zach Mumbach who was formerly a producer at “Dead Space” developer Visceral Games (the studio closed by EA in 2017). He said in a tweet:

“This is the company that shut down my studio and laid off ~100 great developers because we were making a single-player game. Also, if you break game rating scores down to a 10-point scale most EA games are a solid 6 or 7. Not because the developers are bad but because EA the corporation forces them to rush games out. EA corporate leadership wouldn’t know what a ’10’ looks like in terms of video games.”

Others like Vince Zampella, the head of Respawn Entertainment which makes both multiplayer (“Apex Legends”) and single-player (“Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order”) hits for EA, responded to the tweet with a suitable facepalm emoji.

As Kotaku points out, the company’s growth has been “primarily achieved by doubling down on multiplayer live-service games… and finding new ways to monetise them through elaborate microtransaction shops, season passes, and loot boxes.”

EA famously scrapped the ambitious single-player “Star Wars” game from original “Uncharted” trilogy writer Amy Hennig, only to then release “Star Wars: Battlefront II” with its pay-to-win loot boxes. That title became a lightning rod for controversy over microtransactions and drew legislative scrutiny.

As some have pointed out though, the tweet is especially baffling considering some of EA’s most acclaimed titles to date have been single-player ones including BioWare’s “Mass Effect” and “Dragon Age” franchises; the “Dead Space,” “Crysis” and “SSX” franchises; and the likes of “Mirror’s Edge,” “Titanfall 2,” “The Sims 4” and more recently the aforementioned ‘Fallen Order’.

In addition, some of their more recent multiplayer efforts including “Anthem,” “Battlefield V” and “Battlefield 2042” have drawn stern criticism and some of the worst user scores ever seen on aggregate sites like Metacritic. Following the outrage, EA tweeted: “Roast well deserved. We’ll take this L cause playing single-player games actually makes them an 11.”

Elon Musk Roasted By Video Game Site Over Stolen Twitter Meme

Photo: Maja Hitij (Getty Images)

When I was six, I peed my pants in class because I was too proud to use my public school bathroom. Similarly, suave billionaire and alleged sexual harasser Elon Musk peed his proverbial pants after a Twitter scuffle with the satirical video game site Hard Drive. Neither Musk nor Hard Drive returned a request for comment.

On May 30, Musk posted a screenshot of Hard Drive’s article “Zodiac Killer Letter Solved by Opening It With VLC Media Player” with the site’s name cropped out. This was done in accordance with his belief that online images exist to be stolen—in 2019, Musk tweeted that “no one should be credited with anything ever,” though he is currently very angry that President Joe Biden has not yet publicly acknowledged Tesla as a leading electric vehicle company.

Despite his thinking that crediting artists for their work is “destroying the medium,” Musk did eventually delete the image he swiped from Hard Drive. But it took a battle of wit and stamina to get him there, which is to say that Musk regurgitated a few aphorisms about art and comedy until Hard Drive skewered his approaches to both, making him, presumably, turn his Tesla on Autopilot and cry his way to yet another shareholder lawsuit.

“The selfless art of anonymous meme creators is something to be admired,” Musk tweeted at the Hard Drive Twitter account after it requested credit twice.

“ok well lemme know what you think about this one,” Hard Drive said in response and posted a link to an article titled “Elon Musk Admits He Wants to Travel to Mars Because No One Hates Him There Yet.” Musk did not seem like he wanted to steal that one.

“The reason you’re not that funny is because you’re woke,” he said. “Humor relies on an intuitive & often awkward truth being recognized by the audience, but wokism is a lie, which is why nobody laughs.”

A most intriguing observation indeed. It forces us to ponder why Musk reposted Hard Drive at all. The site’s being “not that funny” and “woke” clearly proves an affront to his discerning taste and sensibility, which includes allegedly showing an unwilling woman his penis. It is also possible that Musk’s condemnation of Hard Drive’s “wokism” stems from some sort of affinity with the Zodiac Killer, the origin of this Twitter spar.

“very funny to me that elon’s example of ‘woke humor’ is an article making fun of the ZODIAC KILLER of all people,” Hard Drive editor-in-chief Jeremy Kaplowitz said. “’woke comedy is ruining everything, man. you used to be able to kill a bunch of people in the 60s and write letters to the police about it, but not anymore.’”

Musk called a Hard Drive writer a coward for blocking him, declared the stolen meme he tweeted to protect a result of a “slow meme day,” and rounded the night off with another pilfered meme. This one was about putting your phone down and going outside. Hopefully, Musk stays online—who else would defend the Zodiac Killer’s honor?

Aaron Rodgers, Donald Trump & Fox News Roasted In SNL Cold Open – Deadline

“Aaron, you’re not vaccinated, so what? declared Cecily Strong as Judge Jeanine tonight to Pete Davidson’s Aaron Rodgers on Saturday Night Live.

”Who the hell cares, it’s your body, your choice and please never use that quote for any other issue,” the easy target spoof of the frequently skewered legal TV host added before tossing straight to Covid-19 vaccine refusing quarterback. “Exactly, Jeanine, it’s my body and my Covid, I can give it to whoever I want, but suddenly the woke mob is coming after me,” the increasingly versatile Davidson responded with a shout out to an actual interview Rodgers gave on The Pat McAfee Show earlier this week.

Which is to say SNL went full Fox News, full NFL and full MAGA tonight in a cold open that aimed to roast the Rupert Murdoch-owned conservative cable channel, the “cancel culture” battling Green Bay Packers player — who clearly was not the best choice to replace Alex Trebek on Jeopardy! – and a certain former Celebrity Apprentice host

“People can talk all they want, but at the end of the day, my record is still seven and one,” Davidson’s Rodgers went on to say to Strong’s boozy and meandering Jeanine Pirro praising him for not getting vaccinated because he thought it could make him sterile. Meaning, of the eight people I’ve infected, seven are fine.”

Now, if Rodger’s false equivalency wasn’t enough to put under the microscope in the opening minutes of SNL, the critical race theory in the schools battling new Governor-elect of Virginia Glenn Youngkin (as portrayed by Alex Moffat) was on too. Of course, as is true of the Old Dominion Republican, this Youngkin was also the warm-up act for “former and basically current President of the United States, Donald Trump”

“It’s great to be here, Judge Judy, and it’s great to win again,” began the James Austin Johnson played Trump (who hosted SNL too, I might add). “You are going to see a lot more winning where that came from, let me tell you, you are going to see a lot,” SNL‘s latest depiction of Trump went on to say, taking credit for Youngkin’s win in Virginia and exciting, to put it mildly, Strong’s Pirro fangirl – as you can see above.

Doing political double duty now on SNL this year with his Joe Biden personification as well, new cast member Johnson proceeded to prove how Trump he could go in a role nearly perfected by Alec Baldwin by offering some unsolicited rundown advice on Star Wars, the new Dune movie, Marvel’s just opened Eternals (“too diverse“) and Chris Pratt in the upcoming Super Mario flick. “You know what, I’m very close with Mario, very close with Luigi, you know our wives play play golf together,” Johnson’s Trump opined in words that no one would doubt the real Trump would say without a trace of irony.

And, for once, it all worked for SNL, or as Strong’s Judge Jeanine put it: “Wow Mr. President, you’re a genius, a patriot and one handsome mountain of a man!”

At the end of a news packed week of climate change conferences, GOP election wins, Trump depositions, a booming jobs report, Democrats pulling tragedy out of Joe Biden’s triumph of a year ago and then finding a long overdue bill with the House of Representatives passing POTUS’ $1 trillion infrastructure plan late last night, SNL had a boatload of source material to choose from for its cold opening on the political front alone.

Back from a short break and a bit of a ratings rebound with ex-cast member Jason Sudeikis as host on October 23, tonight’s fifth episode of the 47th season of the Lorne Michaels executive produced late nighter sees Succession star Kieran Culkin and Ed Sheeran as the musical guest.

While the bespectacled singer-songwriter insisted this week to Howard Stern that he always intended to perform on SNL despite testing positive for Covid-19 in late October, there was some question if Sheeran would be appearing live or virtually on the show. Coming just over a week after Sheeran’s fifth studio album was released, the SNL performance by the now quarantine free singer will be in Studio 8H at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in front of a small live audience

Although it’s his first time as SNL host, Emmy nominee Culkin actually first appeared on the show nearly 30 years ago on November 23, 1991, when his brother Macaulay was the host – take a look:

Next week sees The Harder They Fall star Jonathan Majors hosting SNL with musical guest Taylor Swift back for her sixth visit to the show.
