‘The Resident’, his wife and piles of cash: How a Russian spy ring stole NATO and EU secrets from Bulgaria

A woman in a white jacket arrives at the Russian embassy in Sofia; she is seen in animated conversation with someone unidentified. Inside a government office, a surveillance camera catches a man counting money at his desk, apparently the reward for his espionage. And in an intercepted phone call, the alleged leader of the group is heard telling an accomplice how his father cried when Stalin died. Then they talk money.

The recordings, made by Bulgarian investigators, were released on Friday as prosecutors announced charges against six Bulgarians — several of them senior or former defense officials — on suspicion of spying for Russia.

Prosecutors alleged that the group “posed a serious threat to national security by collecting and handing to a foreign country state secrets of Bulgaria, NATO and the European Union.”

They also released a memo allegedly written by the group’s leader, in a mixture of Bulgarian and Russian, setting out the spy ring’s priorities, which included gathering information on NATO meetings, EU policy towards Russia and intelligence on Ukraine and Belarus.

According to prosecutors, of particular interest to the spies was the recently inaugurated NATO Maritime Coordination Center in Varna, on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast.
The group’s apparent unmasking came days before US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s first visit to NATO — with Russia very much on the agenda – and amid signs that the Biden administration is intent on taking a tougher stance towards Moscow than that pursued by former President Donald Trump.
“The days of the United States rolling over in the face of Russia’s aggressive actions … are over,” Biden said last month.
A State Department spokesman tweeted last week that the US was “attentively watching” the Bulgarian investigation and that it “stands with Bulgarians against these malign activities.”

Prosecutors said the woman arrested, who has not been named, has dual Bulgarian-Russian nationality and served as the intermediary with the embassy. In return she purportedly received cash for the group’s operations. Prosecutors also said she is the wife of the spy ring’s leader. They referred to him as “The Resident” and said he is a high-ranking former member of Bulgaria’s defense ministry.

Several of those arrested held senior positions at Bulgaria’s Defense Ministry and in the Military Intelligence Service, suggesting the alleged conspiracy may have had access to highly-classified information.

The country’s chief prosecutor, Ivan Geshev, described the espionage as “unparalleled since 1944.”

On Monday, the Bulgarian government followed up by announcing the expulsion of two Russian diplomats, bringing to eight the total number of Russian officials kicked out of Bulgaria since late 2019. Last December, Russia’s military attaché in Sofia was expelled following allegations that he had gathered information on US service members stationed on Bulgarian territory during military exercises.

Over the weekend, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov asked Moscow to stop its spying operations in Bulgaria. But mindful of Bulgaria’s shared Slavic heritage with Russia — and its dependence on Russian energy — Borissov added: “Friendship is friendship, we have always demonstrated that.”

For its part, the Russian embassy in Sofia responded that the “tireless attempts to drive a wedge into the Russian-Bulgarian dialogue and once again demonize our country are obvious.”

Until 1989, Bulgaria was one of the most loyal members of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. Now, as a member of NATO and the European Union, western analysts say it’s a favorite target for Russian espionage. If Vienna was the epicenter of post-World War II espionage in Europe, Sofia might lay claim to that dubious title today.

As a NATO member, Bulgaria occupies some critical real estate adjacent to the Black Sea. NATO aircraft fly from bases in Bulgaria in patrols over the area, which has seen more military activity by both Russia and the Alliance since Moscow’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. Last year, six USAF F-16s operated from Bulgaria’s Graf Ignatievo Air Base.

Russians close to the Kremlin have backed pro-Russian groups in Bulgaria. One of those groups — the Russophiles National Movement — is led by Nikolai Malinov, who was charged by Bulgarian prosecutors in 2019 with spying and laundering money for Russian organizations. His case is yet to come to trial, and Malinov has maintained his innocence.

Bulgarian prosecutors allege that he wrote a document outlining “the steps that need to be taken to completely reform Bulgaria’s geopolitical orientation, moving it away from the West and bringing it closer to Russia.”

While awaiting trial, Malinov was allowed to leave Bulgaria for a trip to Moscow, where he was presented with the Russian Order of Friendship by President Vladimir Putin.

Bulgaria’s prosecutor-general claimed Malinov provided intelligence to a group in Russia called the Double Headed Eagle Society, which is run by oligarch Konstantin Malofeev. Malofeev is a champion of the Russian Orthodox Church and runs a TV network in Russia. He has previously suggested that Vladimir Putin should be made the Tsar of Russia.

In 2019, Malofeev was banned from entering Bulgaria for ten years because of his association with Malinov, which he has acknowledged as close. They had tried but failed to purchase a Bulgarian television network.

Malofeev was previously sanctioned by the US and European Union for financing separatist military groups in eastern Ukraine. He has denied that accusation.
Last year Bulgarian prosecutors also charged three Russians in absentia, in connection with the poisoning of a Bulgarian weapons dealer in Sofia in 2015 using a substance believed to be the nerve agent Novichok. One of them was identified as Sergei Fedotov, allegedly an officer in Russian military intelligence. Previous attempts by CNN and other media organizations to reach Fedotov have been unsuccessful.
The investigative group Bellingcat has identified Fedotov as one of three Russian intelligence agents alleged to be linked to the poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in England in 2018.

Russia routinely denies allegations of spying in Bulgaria. Last year, Sergei Ivanov — spokesman for Russia’s foreign intelligence service — accused US intelligence services of launching a campaign against people in eastern Europe who wanted good relations with Russia. Bulgaria, he told Russian media, had become the epicenter of this campaign.

The latest arrests have sparked another crisis in relations between Moscow and Sofia, which have traditionally been close because of a shared Slavic and Orthodox culture.

But if Bulgarian prosecutors are right, the Kremlin regards Bulgaria as an inviting target — a back door into intelligence about NATO and the European Union, and weapons reaching Ukraine.

Florida Ring doorbell camera catches deadly plane crash in neighborhood

A small plane crashed into a car traveling on a Florida street Monday before skidding and bursting into flames, killing the two people inside the aircraft and a young boy in an SUV, according to reports.

The identities of the victims were not immediately released.

The plane crashed shortly after taking off around 3 p.m. from the North Perry Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement. The cause of the crash has not been determined and is being investigated.

A video taken from a Ring security camera in a nearby home captured the crash. The footage shows the plane crashing nose first into the vehicle before skidding on the street. A ball of fire erupts as the aircraft breaks up into pieces.

The blaze was extinguished by fire personnel and the vehicle driver and passenger were extricated, authorities said. The plane took down a power line before striking the vehicle, officials said.

Elden Ring trailer appears to leak online

Is this the first footage from the game?

Bandai Namco

Since its reveal at E3 2019, FromSoftware’s Elden Ring has become a highly anticipated game. It’ll likely be a must-play for many gamers when it’s released for the PS4, PC and Xbox One. The Dark Souls developer worked with Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin to create a new world, and thanks to a new leak, fans may finally be getting a glimpse of the action.

Snippets of a purported trailer first appeared on Twitter on Monday, and then a trailer was uploaded to YouTube. The video has not yet been confirmed by publisher Bandai Namco as the trailer for the upcoming game.

The footage contains a few trademarks for FromSoftware’s games. In one shot, the player’s character sneaks behind an enemy and stabs them in the back. There are two glances at magic being used in combat with one surrounding the character and then shooting out, similar to the Homing Soulmass spell in the Dark Souls games. There’s also a spell that appears to create a magic spear that’s similar to the various magic weapon spells found in the developer’s games. And it wouldn’t be a FromSoftware game without huge bosses as shown multiple times in the leaked trailer.

The Elden Ring News YouTube channel uploaded a second part of the leaked trailer. This one doesn’t show combat like the first, but it has a bit more of the world the game takes place in. The narrators also mentioned how the player “crossed the sea of fog all the way to the Riftlands.”

Fog is another mainstay of FromSoftware’s games, with boss areas usually blocked off by a wall of fog. There also is a quick shot of three different player classes, and one has the typical wizard attire. In FromSoftware games, with the exception of Sekiro, players have starting classes to choose from that will have different stats and equipment.

Two more leaks appeared Monday and were combined with the first two to create an almost two-minute trailer. The final videos were recorded from a screen like the first two, but it appears to be a different location and there’s no audio. More of the world is shown and, again, looks very similar to FromSoftware’s Dark Souls games. Then in the final leak, a character in robes appears and seems to be the antagonist in the game.

There’s not much known about Elden Ring outside of the small bits of information released in 2019. The game’s director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, said that Martin created the mythos and that this would be one of the developer’s biggest games ever. Elden Ring’s initial release date was set for March, but it appears to have been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Monday, Bandai Namco also trademarked “Bandia Namco Next,” according to Nibellion on Twitter. This could be the publisher’s own showcase happening soon, which would likely prominently feature Elden Ring.

Bandai Namco didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 leaks out with ‘3D motion detection’

Amazon’s Ring has so many different video doorbells in the market it’s getting hard to keep track, but one of them is apparently about to get a big bump with some brand-new features: The Ring Wi-Fi Video Doorbell Pro 2 has just leaked in a listing at Best Buy Canada, as spotted by ZatzNotFunny.

It appears to be a direct successor to the high-end Ring Video Doorbell Pro at the same CA$325 (roughly $250 US dollars), but also the first Ring to stream video resolution at higher than 1080p, with a 1536p “expanded Head to Toe view” that “allows you to clearly see who is at your door.” That means Amazon’s catching up to the field-of-view and resolution that Arlo’s Video Doorbell introduced in late 2019.

The new doorbell at right seems like it’s shorter and wider, but pretty much the same design.

As a Ring Video Doorbell Pro owner myself, that would have been a desirable feature: I had to angle my doorbell down with two different add-on brackets so I could actually see packages being delivered to my front porch. But I’m more intrigued by the mention of “3D motion detection,” which sounds like something a touchless doorbell could use to tell when someone’s standing right in front of it — and maybe cut down on false positives buzzing my phone.

Here’s the rest of Best Buy’s product description:

You’ll also notice it comes with Alexa greetings — something Ring brought to the original Video Doorbell Pro just the other day. Note that unlike most other Ring doorbells, the Pro models typically don’t have swappable batteries as an option; you have to wire them up to a powerful doorbell transformer, which you may or may not already have in your home. In January, Ring also added a $60 wired model, its least expensive yet.

The Best Buy page suggests it might be available March 31st, though you should always take release dates on early product pages with a grain of salt.

Bitcoin jumps 7% after Elon Musk posts an image of a crypto-themed ring and makes a vague reference to dogecoin | Currency News | Financial and Business News

The price of bitcoin rose by as much as 7% on Thursday after Elon Musk posted a vague tweet with a reference to dogecoin and an image of a crypto-themed ring.

The digital asset rose by $4,000 to trade around $48,000 at 9:40 a.m. ET, after it was stuck around $43,800 the previous day.

In his tweet, Musk said: “Frodo was the underdoge, All thought he would fail, Himself most of all,” seemingly in a reference to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Dogecoin saw only a 0.8% jump to $0.07, but it’s still up 1300% year-to-date.

Its price was further boosted by positive announcements from other big corporations. Mastercard said it would open its network to some cryptocurrencies later this year and Bank of New York Mellon announced it will start transacting bitcoin for its clients.

Earlier this week, the token got its biggest endorsement after Tesla disclosed a $1.5 billion bitcoin investment. That pushed bitcoin’s price to its record high of $48,000.

“These are just the early innings of corporate adoption, as digital currencies are beginning to play a larger role in robust balance sheet management,” said Nathan Cox, chief investment officer at investment firm Two Prime.

One analyst said Tesla’s decision was a massive win for the crypto crowd and acceptance within the financial community is what it has long sought – and this move ticks both of those boxes.

“It seems that one thing more powerful than Elon Musk’s Twitter account is the financial power of the company he co-founded and leads,” said Craig Erlam, senior market analyst at OANDA. “I’m a little surprised it wasn’t enough to push $50,000 if I’m honest, but it’s surely only a matter of time. There doesn’t appear to be much appetite to sell at this point.”

China arrests more than 80 people in ‘fake vaccine’ ring crackdown

Police departments in Jiangsu, Beijing and Shandong have arrested more than 80 people involved in producing more than 3,000 fake Covid-19 vaccine doses, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Xinhua said China’s Ministry of Public Security is investigating crimes related to manufacturing and selling of counterfeit vaccines “and the illegal practice of medicine and fraud under the guise of the vaccines.”

Police found that since September 2020, those involved “have been making huge profits by fulfilling saline solution into injectors to process and make fake coronavirus vaccines and selling them at a higher price,” the agency said.

China has been vaccinating its population with shots from two companies, Sinovac and Sinopharm, and both have also been rolled out in other countries, including Turkey.

Both companies initially said their vaccines were more than 78% effective, but late-stage trials of the Sinovac candidate in Brazil reported an efficacy rate of 50.38%.

Sinovac has stood by its vaccine, even as some countries have placed it under review and paused rollouts, but scientists have called on the company to release more data.

Sinopharm, the state-owned company whose vaccine was the first to be approved in China, said its product was 79.34% effective in trials.

Amazon’s Ring now reportedly partners with more than 2,000 US police and fire departments

All but two US states — Montana and Wyoming— now have police or fire departments participating in Amazon’s Ring network, which lets law enforcement ask users for footage from their Ring security cameras to assist with investigations, the Financial Times reported, Figures from Ring show more than 1,189 departments joined the program in 2020 for a total of 2,014. That’s up sharply from 703 departments in 2019 and just 40 in 2018.

The FT reports that local law enforcement departments on the platform asked for Ring videos for a total of more than 22,335 incidents in 2020. The disclosure data from Ring also shows that law enforcement made some 1,900 requests — such as subpoenas, search warrants, and court orders— for footage or data from Ring cameras even after the device owner has denied the request. Amazon complied with such requests 57 percent of the time, its figures show, down from 68 percent in 2019.

Privacy advocates have raised concerns about how Ring data is used by and made available to law enforcement. Ring’s Neighbors app, which allows Ring users to share videos with others nearby has been criticized for containing racist comments and reports. And a report from NBC News last February found that Ring footage wasn’t all that helpful for solving crimes. When it was useful, the Ring footage was mostly used for low-level non-violent property crimes (like the theft of a Nintendo Switch).

Ring began adding support for end-to-end encryption on its cameras earlier this month.

Megan Fox rocks ‘f–k you’ ring after engagement speculation

Megan Fox went from rocking a huge stone this week to opting for an NSFW option following speculation that the actress is now engaged to boyfriend, Machine Gun Kelly.

Recent photos of the couple show the pair bundled up in New York ahead of MGK’s “Saturday Night Live” performance this weekend. The massive gem seen on the “Rogue” actress’ left hand led many to believe that the 30-year-old rapper recently proposed.

Rather than address the whispers head-on, Fox, 34, took to her Instagram Stories Friday evening to share a photo of herself wearing a ring that reads, “F–K YOU” on that same finger. She also included an unamused emoji.

Fox and Kelly — who met while filming “Midnight in the Switchgrass” — were first spotted out together in May. Shortly after, Fox’s husband at the time, Brian Austin Green, announced the couple had split at the end of 2019.

Since then, the couple has been packing on the PDA and declaring their love for each other on social media.

“We’re actually two halves of the same soul, I think. And I said that to him almost immediately, because I felt it right away,” Fox said in July, just before they made their love Instagram-official.

The “Transformers” actress, 34, recently sparked engagement rumors after she was spotted rocking a large ring following a New York City outing on Thursday.

In photos obtained by People magazine, Fox was seen with a large sparkler on her left ring finger — prompting rumors that the “Swing Life Away” rapper may have popped the question to Fox.

Fox and Kelly — real name Richard Colson Baker — is in the Big Apple for “Saturday Night Live,” where the 30-year-old artist is set to perform on Jan. 30.

“There’s never an attempt to control him on my end,” Fox told the outlet. “It’s more that he looks to me to avoid his own self-destructive tendencies. And that’s where I’m useful because, on his own and left to his own devices, I don’t know how much interest he has in caring for himself.”

Reps for Kelly and Fox did not respond to Fox News’ requests for comment.
