Aaron Rodgers exits game vs. Eagles with rib injury; Jordan Love fires TD after replacing Packers QB
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers exited Sunday night’s 40-33 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and headed into the locker room in the third quarter. Rodgers, who has been battling a fractured right thumb since early October, left the game with what the team originally described as an oblique injury.
During his postgame press conference, Rodgers said he hurt his ribs in the first half and tweaked them again in the third quarter. Rodgers said X-rays were inconclusive and he will undergo further testing on Monday.
As for when or if he will return to the lineup this season, Rodgers said if he is healthy, he wants to be out there “as long as we’re mathematically alive” for a postseason spot. The loss dropped Green Bay’s record to 4-8. They sit 11th in the NFC, three games behind the Commanders for the seventh and final seed.
Backup Jordan Love came in at quarterback in Rodgers’ absence and quickly made an impact, connecting with rookie receiver Christian Watson on a 63-yard touchdown, closing the Packers’ deficit to 37-30.
Before leaving the game, Rodgers went 11-for-16 with 140 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Rodgers did not have an injury designation for tonight’s game, but has been playing with an avulsion fracture in his right thumb, per NFL Media. The injury occurred on Oct. 9 in the Packers’ loss to the Giants, when New York defender Oshane Ximines hit No. 12’s hand during a Hail Mary attempt on the final play of the game.
Rodgers has not missed any games due to the thumb and says he will continue playing through the injury. As of now, he says he is not considering surgery.

Dodgers To Place Mookie Betts On IL With Cracked Rib
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters, including Juan Toribio of MLB.com, that Mookie Betts is headed to the injured list due to a cracked rib. Roberts said that the corresponding move will likely be the recall of Zach McKinstry, per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic.
Betts sat out last night’s game due to this issue, though he was back in the lineup today. However, shortly before game time, he was scratched as his soreness lingered. As the club continued testing, an MRI revealed a cracked rib, per Ardaya.
The expected timeline for the absence of Betts isn’t known at this time, but the loss of a talent like his for any amount of time is significant. The former MVP is having yet another excellent campaign, hitting .273/.349/.535 for a 148 wRC+. Combining that batting line with his excellent defense and baserunning, Betts has already accrued 3.3 wins above replacement on the year, in the estimation of FanGraphs.
The Dodgers are having another excellent season, as has come to be the norm for them. However, they appear to be in for a fight this year, as their 40-24 record is just percentage points ahead of the Padres, with the Giants lurking just three games back. That means that every inch will count in the postseason race to come, with the loss of Betts marking a significant blow.
Chris Sale Has Stress Fracture In Rib Cage, Won’t Be Ready For Opening Day
Red Sox ace Chris Sale has a stress fracture in his right rib cage and will not be ready for Opening Day, chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom announced to reporters today (Twitter links via Alex Speier of the Boston Globe). It will be “weeks, not days” before Sale is even cleared to pick up a ball and begin any form of throwing, Bloom adds. However, Sale didn’t suggest a timeline other than stating that bones typically take six to eight weeks to heal. Sale suffered the injury during the lockout, but was prohibited from communicating it to the Red Sox until the new collective bargaining agreement was reached March 10.
Sale joined the Red Sox in a December 2016 trade and is in the third year of a five-year, $145MM extension. He underwent Tommy John surgery in March 2020, ultimately leading to a gap of almost exactly two years between MLB mound appearances. In his nine starts in late 2021, Sale averaged 82 pitches per outing. Sale’s work fell short of his Cy Young-caliber peak, which is to be expected at age 32 and after a long layoff, but he still managed a healthy 28.4 K% and 6.6 BB% in his 42 1/3 innings. Two of Sale’s three postseason starts were particularly brief, but he was able to make a strong 87-pitch effort in Game 5 of the NLCS against the Astros.
The prospect of Sale missing more than a month of the 2022 season is a blow to the Red Sox.

Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa avoids serious rib injury
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has avoided a serious rib injury, a source confirmed to ESPN.
Follow-up X-rays were negative on Tagovailoa’s ribs, and the second-year quarterback’s availability for Week 3 and beyond will be determined based on his pain tolerance, the source said.
Dolphins coach Brian Flores is expected to address Tagovailoa’s status Monday afternoon. NFL Network first reported the negative X-rays.
Tagovailoa was carted off to the locker room Sunday with a rib injury after taking a hit from Buffalo Bills defensive end AJ Epenesa during Miami’s second drive.
The Bills came out aggressive to start the game, pressuring Tagovailoa on four of the six snaps he took, including two sacks on Miami’s opening drive.
He was replaced in the 35-0 loss by Jacoby Brissett, who finished 24-of-40 passing for 169 yards and an interception, which Flores said Sunday was “not good enough” — a descriptor he applied to Miami’s entire team, himself included.
