Universal Theme Park, Resort Hotel Coming to North Texas – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Universal Parks & Resorts says they’re bringing a family-focused theme park and resort hotel to North Texas and a year-round horror experience to Las Vegas.

In North Texas, Frisco Mayor Jeff Cheney announced Wednesday morning that Universal Parks & Resorts was planning to build a kid-themed theme park and hotel off the Dallas North Tollway that will provide entertainment for families for years to come.

Specific details about the park were not disclosed, but officials did say it would have traditional offerings like rides, shows and food while also including meet and greets with characters from Universal properties, films and shows — like Minions or Shrek.

A rendering of the park was shown Wednesday morning that included a lush border with a grand entrance that opens to a lagoon. From there, guests can head in a number of directions to visit themed areas of the park.

The park design also included a river with what appears to be a boat ride throughout the park.

Universal Parks & Resorts

An artist’s rendering showing the plan for a family-focused resort in Frisco, released Jan. 11, 2023.

According to Universal Parks & Resorts Chairman and CEO Mark Woodbury, who was in Frisco for the announcement Wednesday, the park will be unlike any other Universal park in the world and they are “wildly excited” to bring the park to North Texas.

“We’re known for creating one-of-a-kind innovative, interactive experiences for the whole family,” Woodbury said. “We have a portfolio of terrific attractions that appeal to young families around the world. We had an idea to bring all of those together and create a destination that is specifically designed to appeal to families with young children. That’s what you see in this illustration now and that’s what we hope to bring to Frisco.”

The footprint is about one-quarter the size of the parks in Orlando, scaled smaller to be more “intimate and engaging” for younger guests. The company said the theme park will have a completely different look, feel, and scale compared to Universal’s existing parks but will still carry the same quality as the larger resort destinations.

Woodbury said the park is expected to be a one-day or two-day experience and that they plan to also build a 300-room themed resort hotel on the property.

Page Thompson, president of new ventures for Universal Parks & Resorts, said Wednesday the company bought 97 acres on the east side of the Dallas North Tollway near Panther Creek Parkway for the construction of both the park and themed hotel.

The theme park will be built near the 2,500-acre Fields development, which includes plans for roughly 10,000 homes, the headquarters of the PGA, a golf course and a $500 million Omni resort hotel.

Officials did not say what the park will be called or say when they plan to open the park.

UNIVERSAL PARKS TO OPEN YEAR-ROUND HORROR ATTRACTION

Universal Parks & Resorts also announced plans Wednesday to build a horror-themed theme park in Las Vegas that will “bring to life Universal’s vast library of classic horror films and today’s most terrifying tales.”

The park will be open year-round and will be the anchor tenant in a 20-acre expansion of the Area15 entertainment district near the Las Vegas strip.

“Universal has long defined the horror genre with its classic films featuring iconic characters such as Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy and the Wolf Man – and redefined modern horror and suspense stories through collaborations with such high-profile filmmakers as Jason Blum, James Wan and Jordan Peele. Only Universal could ignite the thrill of and excitement of this genre in full scale and three dimensions,” the company said in a statement.

Universal is currently building Epic Universe, a theme park scheduled to open in the summer of 2025 as part of the Universal Orlando Resort.

Universal Parks & Resorts is owned by NBCUniversal, which also owns this station. Universal Parks & Resorts currently operates theme parks and resort properties around the world including two locations in the United States in Hollywood, California and Orlando, Florida. The company also operates parks in Osaka, Japan, Sentosa, Singapore and Beijing, China.

Australia helicopter crash: Four dead and several injured after collision near Gold Coast’s Sea World Resort

CNN
 —

A midair collision between two helicopters in Australia has left four people dead and three others in critical condition, authorities said Monday.

The collision happened around 2 p.m. local time near the popular tourist strip of Main Beach on the Gold Coast, south of Brisbane.

“Those two aircraft, when collided, have crash landed on the sand bank just out from Sea World Resort,” Queensland Police Inspector Gary Worrell, a regional duty officer for the southeastern region, told reporters.

He added it had been difficult for emergency services to access the sand bank, located not far from the coast.

Thirteen people were on the two helicopters, according to Jayney Shearman, from the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS). Of those, four people died, three suffered serious injuries and six had minor injuries, including cuts from shattered glass.

All the injured had been taken to hospital, she said.

Photos from the site show debris lying on a strip of sand, with personnel gathered on land and numerous vessels in the surrounding waters.

Worrell said that though it’s too early to determine the exact cause of the accident, initial inquiries suggests one helicopter had been taking off and the other landing when they collided.

One helicopter “has its windscreen removed, and it’s landed safely on the island. The other (helicopter) has crashed, and it was upside down,” he said.

He added that after the crash, nearby police and members of the public rushed to the site, trying to remove and perform first aid on those inside the helicopter.

Angus Mitchell, Chief Commissioner of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), said in a statement that an investigation had been launched into the collision.

Investigators from the ATSB’s offices in Brisbane and Canberra will be deployed to the scene to gather evidence, examine the wreckage and map the site, as well as interview witnesses and involved parties, Mitchell added.

He asked people who witnessed the collision or saw the helicopters in flight to contact investigators. A preliminary report will come in the next six to eight weeks, with a final report after the investigation is complete, he said.

In a statement posted on Twitter, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk expressed her “deepest sympathies” for the victims’ families and everybody affected. “What has happened on the Gold Coast today is an unthinkable tragedy,” she said.

Police say Sea World Drive has been closed to traffic and urged motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area.

Sea World Drive is the main access point for the marine park that’s popular with tourists on the heart of the Gold Coast. It’s peak tourist season in the region right now, with schools closed for the long summer break.

CNN has reached out to Sea World for comment.

Landslide kills 1, leaves up to a dozen missing on Italy’s resort island of Ischia

Rescuers walk past damaged vehicles after heavy rainfall triggered landslides that collapsed buildings and left at least one person dead and as many as 12 missing, in Casamicciola, on the southern Italian island of Ischia, November 26, 2022.

Milan — Heavy rainfall triggered a massive landslide early Saturday on the southern Italian resort island of Ischia that destroyed buildings and swept parked cars into the sea, leaving at least one person dead and up to 12 missing. The body of a woman was pulled from the mud, the Naples prefect Claudio Palomba, told a news conference.

With raining continuing to fall, rescuers were working gingerly with small bulldozers to pick through mud and detritus seven yards deep in some places in the search for possible victims. Reinforcements arrived by ferry, including teams of sniffer dogs to help the search efforts.

The force of the mud sliding down the mountainside just before dawn was strong enough to send cars and buses onto beaches and into the sea at the port of Casamicciola, on the north end of the island, which lies off Naples.

The island received nearly five inches of rain in six hours, the heaviest rainfall in 20 years, according to officials.

Streets were impassable and mayors on the island urged people to stay home. At least 100 people were reported stranded without electricity and water, and about 70 were housed in a community gymnasium.

There was early confusion over the death toll. Vice Premier Matteo Salvini initially said that eight people had been confirmed dead, followed by the interior minister saying that no deaths had yet been confirmed, while 10 to 12 were missing.

“The situation is very complicated and very serious because probably some of those people are under the mud,” Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi told RAI state TV from an emergency command center in Rome.

Italian news agency ANSA reported that at least 10 buildings had collapsed. One family with a newborn that was previously reported missing was located and was receiving medical care, according to the Naples prefect.

Video from the island showed small bulldozers clearing roads, while residents used hoses to try to get mud out of their homes. One man, identified as Benjamin Iacono, told Sky TG24 that mud overwhelmed three adjacent shops that he owns, completely wiping out his inventory. He estimated damage at 100,000 euros to 150,000 euros ($104,000 to $156,000).

Firefighters and the Coast Guard were conducting search and rescues, initially hampered by strong winds that prevented helicopters and boats from reaching the island.

The densely populated mountainous island is a popular tourist destination for both its beaches and spas. A 4.0-magnitude quake on the island in 2017 killed two people, causing significant damage to the towns of Casamicciola and neighboring Lacco Ameno.

Body found in Mexico resort believed to be missing radio host, authorities say

MEXICO CITY, Aug 27 (Reuters) – A body found earlier this week in a Mexican resort town is believed to be that of a missing former radio host, though forensic tests were pending, local authorities said on Saturday.

Candida Cristal Vazquez, a former radio presenter who also worked in communications for the local police, was reported missing in late July.

The mayor of Mazatlan on Mexico’s Pacific coast, Luis Guillermo Benitez, told reporters on Saturday that tests were pending to confirm that a body found Thursday was Vazquez, but “everything indicates that it is her.”

A statement from the state attorney general on Friday said family members had identified the body as Vazquez, but that it could not yet confirm the decomposing body was hers without results from genetic tests it had performed.

Police found the body floating in a canal in Mazatlan.

Mexican media has described Vazquez as a journalist. The Committee to Protect Journalists told Reuters it was still investigating whether she was a journalist and whether her death was motivated by her profession.

2022 is already the deadliest year on record for members of the Mexican press, with at least 18 journalists killed so far, according to Article 19. read more

Vanderpump Rules personalities Scheana Shay and Brock Davies are married at resort in Cancun, Mexico

Vanderpump Rules stars Scheana Shay and Brock Davies wed one another in a ceremony in Cancun, Mexico Tuesday at the Dreams Natura Resort & Spa.

‘I just wanted us to have a good time with every person who is important to us,’ Shay, 37, told People, adding that she and Davies were thrilled to ‘be able to get that time for a few days with all of our friends and family to celebrate us.’

Shay made her entrance to a James Kennedy remix of the Israel Kamakawiwo’ole classic Somewhere Over the Rainbow prior to exchanging vows with the fitness professional, according to People.

The latest: Vanderpump Rules stars Scheana Shay and Brock Davies wed one another in a ceremony in Cancun, Mexico Tuesday at the Dreams Natura Resort & Spa

Shay donned a trio of Pol Atteau-designed outfits on the big day, while their daughter Summer Moon, one, matched her as the flower girl for the ceremony.

‘I love that we have designed this from scratch together and the lace is absolutely stunning,’ she told the outlet of her wedding gown. Davies wore an all-white Art Lewin suit to the nuptials.

A number of Vanderpump Rules were involved in the ceremony, as Ariana Madix and Raquel Leviss were bridesmaids, while Tom Sandoval and Tom Schwartz served as groomsmen.

Shay’s sister Cortney van Olphen was the maid of honor, while Davies’ best friend Charlie Jones was his best man.

The bridal party donned pink ensembles by Pia Gladys Perey, while the groomsmen wore white shirts and tan slacks from Fashion Nova Men, the outlet reported.

Davies told the outlet of the fashion decision: ‘One of my groomsmen asked about suits and I was like, “Lad, we’re getting married in Cancun, you don’t want suits.”’

Other notable names affiliated with the Bravo show on hand included Brittany Cartwright, Kristen Doute and Jax Taylor. Shay described the group to People as ‘a big part of our life.’

Following the vows, Shay donned a mini dress by Atteau to join the attendees for a dancing celebration, US reported.

Partygoers were slated to enjoy a cocktail hour with drinks and appetizers, after which the main course of steak and salmon would be served, with vegan lasagna also available to guests, according to People.

Shay said the couple opted to go with a carrot cake in lieu of a traditional wedding cake, adding that it’s ‘just for cutting’ and ‘more for looks than for eating because no one eats the cake.’

The first dance of the evening was set to the song Beyond by Leon Bridges, which Shay described as ‘very close to our hearts.’

The pair also had a DJ on hand to provide the music, as well as a fireworks show from PyroCaribe.

The couple was slated to enjoy an afterparty at an on-site location featuring a cenote, with a DJ and taco stand on hand.

Shay told the publication that she and Davies chose the Dreams Natura Resort & Spa after looking at four possible venues for the wedding.

‘They had everything I wanted: the glass platform over the pool, a lazy river, a little waterpark,’ she said. ‘It was family-friendly and it just felt right. We needed something that would be good for her and also fun for our guests.’

Shay said that much of the planning went to accommodate Davies’ family members from Australia visiting for the ceremony.

Brittany Cartwright shared an image of the romantic proceedings as the pair prepared to exchange vows

‘I just wanted as much of Brock’s family and friends to be able to be here because, although this is the second marriage for us both, this is his first wedding,’ Shay says. ‘For me it was just really important to make this as special as possible for him and his family.’

She continued: ‘The fact that that many people came on vacation with us is so cool. I feel like it’s a small wedding in scale, but it’s big for a destination. I want this special moment. Brock deserves this. We deserve this.’

Shay credited her wedding planner, Shelby Marie with Simply Classic Events, for helping her put together the special day.

She told People: ‘I’m so glad I have an amazing planner because she’s made this so easy for me – I gave her my vision and she said, ‘I’ll make it happen.”’

Davies and Shay did not have a honeymoon immediately mapped out, but Davies said that it has been booked, adding, ‘Think crystal blue waters.’

Shay said that she and Davies were thrilled to have ‘an amazing time with good people,’ adding, ‘Just being able to have our amazing family and friends here is all we need, and just enjoying being in the moment with each other.’

The pair welcomed their daughter Summer Moon in April of 2021, and got engaged that July.

Davies’ proposal to Shay was chronicled on the ninth season of Vanderpump Rules, as the pair had said they were debating about getting married on the same weekend Kennedy and Leviss had a bash celebrating their engagement. (Kennedy and Leviss later parted ways.)

Shay in February told US that the couple had been planning a smaller wedding to ‘keep costs down,’ but found it difficult ‘to cut people’ from the invite list.

‘We’re just figuring out where and when, and then who to invite and not invite because we do wanna keep it smaller,’ she said. ‘I have [a] very large family.

‘We have a ton of friends, so hopefully, people don’t get offended if they don’t get invited. They understand that we’re doing this for us.’

China Covid lockdown: Thousands of tourists trapped in resort town in Guangxi after shutdown

The city of Beihai, a popular summer holiday destination known for its white-sand beach and volcanic island in the Guangxi region, has reported more than 500 infections over the past week — a major outbreak by China’s standards.

On Saturday, the Beihai government locked down urban parts of the city — where its resorts and tourist attractions are located — ordered mass testing and banned residents from leaving their homes.

The sweeping Covid restrictions also reached Weizhou island, an outlying islet over an hour’s boat ride away that is popular for its scenic coastline and beaches. Starting from Friday, tourists were told to leave the island, while hotels and guesthouses were ordered to refund guests unconditionally.

On Sunday, Weizhou island shut all entertainment venues, from bars, cinemas and massage parlors to swimming pools. Scenic spots across the island were also closed.

At a news conference Sunday, local officials said the more than 2,000 tourists who were stranded in Beihai would be treated based on their levels of Covid risk: those who had not been to medium- or high-risk areas, and who were not identified as a direct or secondary contact of an infected person would be allowed to leave providing they could show a negative Covid test; others would have to stay in the city and undergo quarantine.

Two officials in the city were removed from their posts for not taking adequate measures to prevent the virus spreading, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

The sudden shutdown of the tourist hotspot is the latest example of the economic pain inflicted by China’s costly zero-Covid strategy. Last week, the Chinese economy recorded its worst quarterly performance in over two years, after months of harsh lockdowns wreaked havoc across the country.
China’s tourism industry has been hammered by the seemingly unending travel restrictions and snap lockdowns, especially this year. During the Labor Day holiday in May, only 160 million domestic trips were made — down by a third from the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Many tourist destinations had hoped to see more visitors in the summer holiday, but highly transmissible new subvariants of Omicron have placed local governments under more pressure to control Covid flare-ups.

On Sunday, China reported nearly 600 locally transmitted infections — its highest uptick since May. At least 16 provinces across the country have identified locally transmitted Covid cases so far this month, according to the National Health Commission.

In Macau, the government said Saturday it would extend a citywide lockdown until July 22, as it grappled to contain the gambling hub’s biggest ever Covid outbreak.

Macau imposed the shutdown on July 11, closing its casinos and banning residents from leaving their apartments, except for essential activities such as grocery shopping. It has recorded about 1,700 infections since mid-June.
