Department of Justice investigating ‘reprehensible’ Arkansas police beating caught on camera: Gov. Hutchinson

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A federal investigation has been launched into the viral video of three Arkansas law enforcement officers violently beating a suspect, Governor Asa Hutchinson said Monday.

Hutchinson announced that the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Civil Rights Division will look into the footage, which shows an officer punching suspect Randal Worcester in the head and slamming his head into cement while another officer kicks him. A third officer is seen holding him down.

“That is reprehensible conduct in which a suspect is beat in that fashion,” Hutchinson said at a press conference.

“We don’t have all of the details, and certainly that suspect had a history of concern that was legitimate for the officers, but what that response was was not consistent with the training that they receive,” the Republican governor continued.

The three officers involved were identified as Crawford County deputies Zack King and Levi White and Mulberry police officer Thell Riddle. All three have been suspended pending investigation.

The beating allegedly stemmed from an allegation that Worcester spat in a store clerk’s face and threatened them, prompting police to respond to the incident. But police say that Worcester attacked an officer before the violent arrest that was seen on video.

An attorney representing the two sheriff’s deputies said that at one point, Worcester “became irate and viciously attacked Deputy White by grabbing him by the legs, lifting him up and body-slamming him, headfirst, on the concrete parking lot.”

After Deputy White hit his own head on the concrete, Worcester allegedly climbed onto him and “began striking him on the back of the head and face,” attorney Russell Wood said. Deputy White reportedly suffered a concussion and continues to experience symptoms.

Worcester was booked on a slew of charges, including second-degree battery, resisting arrest, refusal to submit and possessing an instrument of crime, criminal trespass, criminal mischief, terroristic threatening and second-degree assault.

Arkansas State Police, Crawford County Sheriff’s Office and Mulberry Police Department have all confirmed that they are investigating the incident, which is part of a state effort that is separate from the federal investigation.

‘Reprehensible’: Oz condemns GOP opponent’s tweet on Islam

CARLISLE, Pa. (AP) — Republican Senate hopeful Mehmet Oz is stepping up his criticism of far-right candidates in Pennsylvania who are gaining traction ahead of Tuesday’s primary election.

After spending much of the campaign steering clear of fellow Republican Senate contender Kathy Barnette, Oz on Saturday said she was out of step with the GOP and would be unable to win the general election in November. In an interview, he took issue with a 2015 tweet from Barnette in which she wrote that “Pedophilia is a Cornerstone of Islam.”

Oz, who would be the nation’s first Muslim senator, described the comments as “disqualifying.”

“It’s reprehensible that she would tweet out something that is defamatory to an entire religion,” Oz told The Associated Press. “This state was based on religious freedom. I’m proud as a Pennsylvanian to uphold those founding beliefs that every faith has its merits.”

The Barnette campaign did not respond to a request for comment. Earlier in the week, Barnette told NBC News that she did not make the statement, which was still live on her Twitter feed on Saturday.

For months, the race for the Republican nomination for Pennsylvania’s open Senate seat has been an expensive fight between former hedge fund CEO David McCormick and Oz, who have spent millions of dollars attacking each other on television. Each has also faced questions about their ties to Pennsylvania. McCormick grew up in the state, while Oz went to medical school there and was married in Philadelphia.

But in the final days of the Republican primary, a third candidate — Barnette, a conservative commentator who has courted hard-line pro-Trump groups — has emerged. Trump himself has warned that Barnette’s background hasn’t been properly vetted.

With the election just days away, polls show a tight three-way race with a sizable number of undecided voters who could sway the results next week.

Oz has won Trump’s endorsement in the Senate contest, although some Trump supporters continue to question his conservative credentials.

When asked to clarify his views on abortion in the Saturday interview, Oz distanced himself from Trump’s newly minted pick for Pennsylvania governor, Doug Mastriano, a far-right conservative who has called abortion “the No. 1 issue.” In a recent televised debate, Mastriano said he supports banning abortion from conception, with no exceptions for rape, incest or the life of the mother.

Oz described himself as “pro-life,” but said he would prefer an abortion ban in Pennsylvania that would include exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother.

“There are times when we disagree with other pro-life advocates,” Oz told the AP. “In my case, those disagreements often come about because, as a doctor, I’ve dealt with issues that threaten the life of the mother.”

Oz saved his most pointed criticism for Barnette, however, echoing Trump’s concerns that her background hasn’t been properly scrutinized. He lashed out at her previous comments on Islam, noting that she also has a history of anti-gay remarks.

“We know so little,” Oz said. “Every time she answers a question, she raises more questions. But I think it’s disqualifying to make Islamophobic and homophobic comments, not just for the general election, but the Republican primary as well.”

Little Village shooting: Family of Adam Toledo, teen fatally shot by Chicago police, wants justice for ‘reprehensible crime’

CHICAGO (WLS) — The family of a 13-year-old boy killed by Chicago police earlier this week in an “armed confrontation” has hired an attorney and wants to seek justice for his death.

Adam Toledo was shot and killed by police Monday after an early morning Shot Spotter alert in the 2300-block of South Sawyer.

The teen was identified Thursday as Toledo of Little Village by the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Officers say the 13-year-old was armed and fled from police with another suspect.

Toledo’s life ended in an alley after what Chicago police say was an “armed confrontation.” The officer fired one shot, according to the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.

Police shared a photo of a gun allegedly recovered at the scene. A second suspect, 21-year-old Ruben Roman, is charged in the incident with a misdemeanor for resisting an officer.

The boy’s family released a statement overnight Thursday, calling his death the result of “unreasonable conduct of a Chicago Police Officer.”

The statement also said that although Toledo was killed Monday, his family was not notified for two days.

“Adam was a seventh grade student at Garvey School, enjoyed sports and was a good kid. He did not deserve to die the way he did,” the statement said. “The Toledo Family will seek justice for this reprehensible crime.”

Weiss Ortiz PC is now representing the family.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is calling for the release of bodycam video from the incident.

The incident was caught on body camera video, but is unable to be released without a court order given Toledo’s young age, according to COPA.

A spokesperson for COPA said in an updated statement late Thursday: “COPA is currently making every effort and researching all legal avenues that will allow for the public release of all video materials which capture the tragic fatal shooting of 13 year old Adam Toledo.”

“He was so full of life,” said Elizabeth Toledo, his mother, on Thursday. “They just took it away from him.”

Toledo was overwhelmed with loss and surrounded by family as she planned her 13-year-old son’s funeral.

“I just want justice. I just want answers … what happened?” Toledo said. “I just want justice for my son. That’s all.”

Toledo’s mom said he used to sneak out at night while she was asleep, and she had filed a missing person’s report for her son last Thursday after she noticed he was missing.

She told ABC7 that Toledo eventually came back on Saturday, but had snuck out again Sunday night.

“Why did he shot at him if there’s other ways?” Toledo said. “He was a little boy. Obviously he was gonna get scared.”

Toledo’s mom said he had aspirations of becoming a police officer one day.

The officer involved in the shooting was placed on desk duty for 30 days while the Civilian Office of Police Accountability investigates the shooting, police said.

FULL STATEMENT FROM TOLEDO FAMILY

“Adam Toledo was killed early Monday morning, due to the unreasonable conduct of a Chicago Police Officer. We are confident that the Chicago Police Department and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability will conduct a thorough investigation, that there will be transparency, and that Toledo Family wilt find out the truth of what happened to Adam. Adam was killed on March 29th, 2021, but the Toledo Family was only notified of his death two days later. Adam was a seventh grade student at Garvey School, enjoyed sports and was a good kid. He did not deserve to die the way he did. The Toledo Family will seek justice for this reprehensible crime and requests privacy during this time of mourning. The Toledo Family is represented by Weiss Ortiz PC.”

WarnerMedia CEO Confronts Toxic Snyder Cut Fans: ‘Reprehensible’

“We’re not tolerating any of that,” WarnerMedia CEO Ann Sarnoff said about the toxic culture surrounding the Snyder Cut.

In a recent interview with Variety, WarnerMedia CEO Ann Sarnoff condemned Snyder Cut bullies on social media and stressed that follow-up viral movements urging Warner Bros. to #RestoreTheSnyderVerse and #ReleaseTheAyerCut (referring to David Ayer’s original cut of “Suicide Squad”) will not have a similar outcome to “Zack Snyder’s Justice League.” The release of the Snyder cut on HBO Max last week brought the project’s toxic fandom back into the conversation. Not only were critics and WarnerMedia executives not in support of the Snyder cut harassed by fans on social media over the last four years, but reviewers who disliked the Snyder Cut were also subject to social media bullying over the weekend.

“We’re not tolerating any of that. That behavior is reprehensible no matter what franchise you’re talking about or what business you’re talking about. It’s completely unacceptable,” Sarnoff told Variety. “I’m very disappointed in the fans that have chosen to go to that negative place with regard to DC, with regard to some of our executives. It’s just disappointing because we want this to be a safe place to be.”

Sarnoff continued, “We want DC to be a fandom that feels safe and inclusive. We want people to be able to speak up for the things they love, but we don’t want it to be a culture of canceling things that any small faction isn’t happy with. We are not about that. We are about positivity and celebration.”

As fans now mobilize on social media to demand more from Warner Bros., Sarnoff is shutting down buzz around further Zack Snyder “Justice League” projects. The CEO said the release of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” marks “the completion” of the director’s DC trilogy after “Man of Steel” and “Batman v Superman,” and that restoring Snyder’s “Justice League” universe is not in the cards despite fan demand.

“We’re very happy we’ve done this, but we’re very excited about the plans we have for all the multi-dimensional DC characters that are being developed right now,” Sarnoff said.

When asked about releasing David Ayer’s original “Suicide Squad” cut in the same way they released Snyder’s “Justice League” cut, Sarnoff said point blank: “We won’t be developing David Ayer’s cut.”

Earlier this year, Zack Snyder spoke out against labeling his fans as “toxic” in an interview with “Release the Snyder Cut” author and CinemaBlend managing director Sean O’Connell.

“It’s just a bunch of BS. In regards to that toxic fandom, or it’s ‘a win for toxic fandom,’” Snyder said. “In what world does this ‘toxic fandom’ raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for suicide prevention? How is that toxic fandom? They’ve probably achieved more than any other fan base, [and done more] good than any other group. So I don’t understand.”

During the social media campaign urging Warner Bros. to release the Snyder cut, the director’s fans raised over $200,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The reason Snyder left “Justice League” and was replaced by Joss Whedon is because his daughter Autumn died by suicide. The Snyder Cut is now streaming on HBO Max.
