Indian tycoon Gautam Adani replaces Jeff Bezos as world’s second-richest person

Jeff Bezos has dropped to third place in the race for riches.

The Amazon founder is now the world’s third-richest person, after Indian business tycoon Gautam Adani leapfrogged Bezos in the latest Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index.

Adani has amassed an estimated $146.8 billion fortune that only trails Elon Musk’s $263.9 billion, according to Bloomberg News.

It’s the first time a person from Asia has ranked so highly on the Bloomberg’s list, which has long been dominated by white billionaires.

Bezos trails Adani by just $19 million. Shares of e-commerce goliath Amazon are down 26% this year.

Meanwhile, shares of Adani Enterprises Ltd. have surged the past week, and some of his group of companies climbed more than 1,000% since 2020, according to reports.

Adani’s rise to No. 2 coincides with a tech selloff that has chopped more than $45 billion from Bezos’s fortune since January. Bezos — once the world’s richest person — also saw his net worth significantly drop after his 2019 divorce from ex-wife MacKenzie Scott, who received 4% of Amazon.

NASA replaces Artemis 1’s leaky fuel seals

NASA has completed a critical repair of its next-generation Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. On Friday, engineers replaced the leaky seal that forced the agency to scrub its most recent attempt to launch Artemis 1. On September 3rd, a fitting on one of the fuel lines to the SLS began leaking hydrogen. Ground crew at Kennedy Space Center tried to troubleshoot the problem three times, only for the leak to persist and force NASA to call off the launch attempt. On Friday, engineers also replaced the seal on a 4-inch hydrogen “bleed line” that was responsible for a smaller leak during an earlier August 29th launch attempt.

With the new gaskets in place, NASA plans to conduct a fueling test to verify they’re working as intended. The dry run will see engineers attempt to load the SLS with all 736,000 gallons of liquid hydrogen and oxygen it would need during a regular flight. NASA hopes to successfully complete that test as early as September 17th. “This demonstration will allow engineers to check the new seals under cryogenic, or supercold, conditions as expected on launch day and before proceeding to the next launch attempt,” the agency said.

On Thursday, NASA announced it was targeting September 23rd for another go at putting Artemis 1 into space, with September 27th as a backup. Whether it can make those dates will depend on next week’s fueling test and a decision from the US Space Force. Flight regulations require that NASA test the battery of Artemis 1’s flight termination system every 20 days. That’s something it can only do within the Kennedy Space Center’s Vehicle Assembly Building. The Space Force previously granted the agency an extension on the 20-day deadline. NASA has now asked for another waiver.

Major PC modding sites remove Spider-Man mod that replaces in-game pride flags

NexusMods and ModDB, two of the biggest online sites for PC game mods, have removed a project that cut the in-game pride flags from the recently-released PC port of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered. As NexusMods explained in a blog post, the mod was uploaded to its site by a brand new account with no modding history, which the site’s administrators suspect is a secondary account for one of the site’s users — a “sock puppet” account.

“It was very clearly done deliberately to be a troll mod,” NexusMods writes. “The fact the user needed to make a sock puppet like a coward to upload the mod showed their intent to troll and that they knew it would not be allowed. Had they not been a coward and had they used their main account instead, we would have simply removed the mod and told them that we did not want to host it, only banning them if they reuploaded it again after being fairly warned. The creation of the sock puppet removed any doubt and made it a very easy decision for us.”

As well as removing the mod, NexusMods says it’s banned both “the sock puppet account and the user’s main account.” The mod replaced the pride flags found around New York City with the United States flag, which is frequently seen in the original game.

ModDB, another popular source of mods for PC games, also confirmed in a tweet that it’s removed the mod. “ModDB is an inclusive environment for all and we do not permit targeting marginalized groups,” the tweet reads. “Our content moderation is largely automated but when identified, we have a zero tolerance policy for this kind of content.”

“Our policy is thus: we are for inclusivity, we are for diversity,” NexusMods says in its post. “If we think someone is uploading a mod on our site with the intent to deliberately be against inclusivity and/or diversity then we will take action against it.” A NexusMods help page notes that “content that may be generally construed as provocative, divisive, objectionable, discriminatory, or abusive toward any real-world individual or group, may be subject to moderation.”

“If this policy upsets you, if we’ve broken some moral code of conduct as a business that you can’t accept, then please, delete your account,” NexusMods writes.

It’s a shame, because the PC modding community has otherwise been on excellent form with the mods they’ve been creating for Insomniac’s Spider-Man title, allowing players to swing around the city as everything from Spider-Man antagonist Kingpin to Black Cat, and there have been plenty of mods to adjust the look and colors of Spider-Man’s iconic suit.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered modder gets banned over mod that replaces LGBT flags

A modder for Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered got attention for his mod that replaces LGBT flags in the game with American Flags.

Not long after the “Non-Newtonian New York” mod was published, it started getting noticed and soon after got pulled from Nexus Mods.

The maker of the Spider-Man Remastered mod was also banned from Nexus Mods, with a rep from the mod portal confirming the user and mod have been removed and banned as they are “no longer welcome on Nexus.”

As with anything of this nature, once the mod was published and users had it – it has since been rehosted numerous times just not on a massive modding community like Nexus Mods.

User responses to the mod itself and its prompt removal varied from “based” to some being upset the mod existed in the first place – and naturally some were upset the mod was pulled as well.

Regardless, the entire debacle once again brings up the debate over not only an owner’s right to a product they own, let alone free speech. Does such a mod that swaps one flag for another fall under protected speech?

Some will likely say that Nexus Mods is a pivate entity and thus can do whatever they want with the content and users on their website. This same logic can be applied to game publishers and developers – who can now legally revoke your access to a digital game you legally own, for a variety of reasons.

Spider-Man Remastered was just released PC (via Steam and Epic Game Store) and PS5 – expect our thorough review shortly.

Guy Replaces Mazda MX-5 Parts With Nintendo Wii Accessories

For the last month or so, TikTok user Tyler Atkin (@ttptng) has been taking parts of his car—like the steering wheel—off and replacing them with Nintendo Wii accessories. Please do not try this at home.

Driving a 1995 Mazda MX-5 Miata—now renamed the Wiiata—Atkin first replaced the car’s factory standard steering wheel with the Wii’s tiny plastic Mario Kart accessory (complete with Wii Remote tucked inside it):

Next, he replaced the gearstick with a Wii nunchuk controller:

MX-5 floormats? What is this, a car show? Get that shit out of there, and replace the front floor coverings with Wii Fit yoga mats:

With all that stuff in place the Mazda handrake grip was looking decidedly out of place, so it had to be replaced, this time with a comically large Wii Sports baseball bat accessory:

All of which is pointless if you can’t actually play a Nintendo Wii while in the Miiata, so yeah, he then removed the car’s stereo and slid in a whole console to replace it, adding a small screen to the dash in the process:

All that was left now was to take the car out on the road, something that technically worked, as you can see in this video:

I mean, yes, it drives, as you can see. And the gearstick/handbrake replacements are purely cosmetic choices, so whatever. But trying to turn the car with a wheel that small does not look like a fun (or safe) time! And surely getting out of a tight parking spot will look something like this?

The answer to that and any other concerned questions about safety and suitability are: who cares, these aren’t permanent additions, they’re a joke made for the internet, one we have all enjoyed.

If you liked Tyler’s videos, this Wii stuff was just part of his Mazda build tinkering, which also includes…replacing the Wii wheel with the Forza Horizon disc.

Kanye West Drops Out of Rolling Loud Miami 2022, Kid Cudi Replaces Him

Kanye West will not play Rolling Loud Miami.

The festival made the announcement on Sunday afternoon, sharing that Kid Cudi would take Ye’s place. “Due to circumstances outside of our control, Ye will no longer be performing at Rolling Loud Miami 2022. Please welcome @KiDCuDi!” the tweet said. Cudi also confirmed the news, writing, “Rager boy incoming!” on Twitter.

Rolling Loud co-founders Tariq Cherif and Matt Zingler also issued a statement regarding the news, telling Complex over email, “We were looking forward to Ye headlining Rolling Loud Miami 2022. We spent months working with him and his team on the performance. Unfortunately, Ye has decided that he will no longer be performing. This is the first time a headliner has ever pulled off our show and though we don’t take it lightly, we wish him the best. We look forward to welcoming Kid Cudi as a headliner in Miami and we can’t wait to see what he has in store.”

It was revealed back in March that Kanye would headline the Miami event alongside Future and Kendrick Lamar at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens from July 22-24.

In April, Kanye also dropped out of Coachella as a headliner for the festival’s two weekends. He seemingly canceled due to personal reasons, after having been in the public eye, feuding with Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson.

The last time Ye played was in Miami in February, to perform another Donda experience. Complex’s Eric Skelton attended the event, writing, “Throughout all of these Donda listening events, Kanye has shown his work, presenting his material in a warts-and-all manner that’s very raw and transparent. Sometimes it’s beautiful. Sometimes it’s dark. Often, it’s twisted. But it’ll always make the music world stop and pay attention.”

Google Play Store replaces app permissions with developer-reported information

Earlier this year, the Google Play Store launched a new data privacy section that relies on developers to disclose the information their apps collect. But as pointed out by Esper senior editor Mishaal Rahman (via Ars Technica), this may mean that Google will no longer display a verified list of permissions it automatically gathers from each app, giving developers full control over what they choose (or don’t choose) to disclose to users.

When Google first announced the new data privacy section last year, the company made it clear that its system would rely on information provided by developers. On a support page, Google states that developers have until July 20th to fill out a data privacy form for their apps, noting developers “alone” must make “complete and accurate declarations” for their apps.

“Google Play reviews apps across all policy requirements; however we cannot make determinations on behalf of the developers of how they handle user data,” Google explains. “Only you possess all the information required to complete the Data safety form.” Google says it will take “appropriate action” if it finds any discrepancies between developers’ reported information and the app itself.

It’s worth noting that the Apple App Store has a similar policy in place for its privacy “nutrition” labels, and also requires developers to submit “self-reported summaries” about their apps’ privacy practices. Just like Google’s doing now, Apple puts its trust in developers to provide truthful information about the data their apps collect, which a report from The Washington Post found is often “misleading or flat-out inaccurate.”

While Google doesn’t indicate any plans to replace the automatically-generated app permissions with the data privacy section, it looks like Google quietly swapped it out. In a thread on Twitter, Rahman shows screenshots comparing one app listing with the old “Permissions” section, and another that has just “Data safety.” I noticed the same after comparing an archived version of TikTok’s Google Play Store listing from 2021 with the one that’s available right now.

As Rahman points out, Google is storing app permissions in the Play store, but it’s just not visible from the front end. He suggests downloading the open-source Play Store alternative, called Aurora, which still displays permissions before you download an app.

That said, it would make a lot more sense for Google to display both app permissions and the data privacy section. This way, users could compare both to confirm that the developer-reported permissions are consistent with Google’s findings. The Verge reached out to Google to see if the company plans on reinstating the app permissions section, but didn’t immediately hear back.

Bed Bath & Beyond replaces CEO Tritton as sales sink

June 29 (Reuters) – Bed Bath & Beyond Inc (BBBY.O) on Wednesday replaced Chief Executive Officer Mark Tritton as part of a management shake-up to reverse a slump in its business, the home goods retailer said.

Shares fell 13% in premarket trading as the company’s first-quarter net sales slumped 25%, rounding off a year of sales slipping below market expectations.

The rejig at the top management comes just a few months after activist investor and billionaire Ryan Cohen criticized the retailer for an “overly ambitious” strategy, overpaying top executives and failing to reverse market share losses.

Cohen, who is also the chairman of GameStop Corp (GME.N), had disapproved of Tritton’s $27 million compensation over the last two years, saying it was far more than what top bosses earned at bigger retailers including Macy’s (M.N), Kohl’s (KSS.N), and Dollar Tree (DLTR.O).

“Mr. Tritton should recognize that chief executives who are awarded outsized compensation and seek frequent publicity also invite much higher expectations when it comes to growth and shareholder value creation,” Cohen said in March.

The company subsequently reached an agreement with Cohen by appointing three new directors, two of them to the committee exploring options for its baby products unit.

On Wednesday, it named the head of the strategy committee and independent director Sue Gove as Tritton’s replacement on an interim basis.

Tritton was made CEO in 2019 soon after the retailer settled with another set of activist investors who had criticized it for failing to adapt quickly to a shift in consumer preference to shop online.

Bed Bath & Beyond also replaced its chief merchandising officer Joe Hartsig with Mara Sirhal, general manager of its Harmon health and beauty stores, as it looks to overcome supply chain issues that have plagued it for most of the pandemic.

Salma Hayek Replaces Thandiwe Newton in HBO Max Movie – The Hollywood Reporter

Thandiwe Newton is leaving Magic Mike’s Last Dance, with Salma Hayek taking over her role in the Warner Bros. film. Production had recently begun in London.

“Thandiwe Newton has made the difficult decision to step away from the production of Warner Bros. Pictures’ Magic Mike’s Last Dance to deal with family matters,” a Warners spokesperson said in a statement.

Magic Mike’s Last Dance will be premiering exclusively on HBO Max and will see Channing Tatum return as male stripper Mike Lane, a character loosely based on Tatum’s own experiences as a stripper in Florida. Plot details are not yet known for Last Dance, but the movie is expected to wrap up the Magic Mike story.

The first Magic Mike film grossed $167 million at the box office and was followed by the 2015 sequel, Magic Mike XXL. Both films’ combined global gross nearly reached $300 million. The franchise also spawned a lucrative stage show, Magic Mike Live, which has had runs in Las Vegas, London, Berlin and Australia.

Steven Soderbergh will return to the director’s chair, having stepped away for the 2015 sequel. Reid Carolin, who was behind the screenplays for the first two Magic Mike films, is returning to write.

Newton is currently on screens with Chris Pine in All the Old Knives, and last year appeared in Reminiscence for Warner Bros. and her Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy. Hayek appeared in last year’s Marvel Studios film Eternals and Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci and has a voice role in the upcoming animated feature Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. She is repped by CAA, Management 360 and Laird & Sobel.

China replaces Xinjiang party boss associated with Uyghur crackdown | China

China has replaced the Communist party official widely associated with a security crackdown targeting ethnic Uyghurs and other Muslims in the far-west region of Xinjiang.

The state-owned Xinhua news agency said in a brief announcement on Saturday that Ma Xingrui, the governor of the coastal economic powerhouse Guangdong province since 2017, had replaced Chen Quanguo as the Xinjiang party chief. Chen will move to another role.

The change came amid a wider reshuffle ahead of next year’s 20th party congress, scheduled for the autumn. It is not clear whether the move signals a rethink in China’s overall approach to Xinjiang. Beijing would be sensitive to any interpretation that it was bowing to international pressure.

Some Chinese observers have noted Chen may be promoted further during the party congress. Others say his replacement, Ma, may focus more on the region’s economic development.

Chen, 66, was appointed party secretary of Xinjiang in 2016. He is one of the 25 members of China’s politburo and was placed on a sanctions list last year by the US.

On Thursday, Joe Biden signed into law a ban on imports from Xinjiang over Washington’s concerns about forced labour. Beijing condemned the move.

Rights groups and the United Nations say about 1 million Uyghurs and other Muslims have been detained in re-education camps in Xinjiang in the name of combating religious extremism and terrorism.

Since 2017, Beijing’s policy in the province has faced fierce criticism from abroad. Some western lawmakers and parliamentarians have described China’s treatment of the Uyghurs as genocidal – a charge Beijing denies. There have also been calls for a boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics in February.

Chen’s replacement, 62-year-old Ma, has a background in the aerospace industry. Before becoming governor of Guangdong he served as the party boss in Shenzhen from 2015.
