Acer’s AMD-powered Swift Edge laptop is a gentle reminder of the Intel tax

Enlarge / Acer announced the Swift Edge laptop today.

Acer’s Swift Edge clamshell announced today is a gentle reminder of the so-called Intel tax. The PC offers a larger screen with more expensive display technology and pixels than a similarly specced Acer Swift 5 ultralight for the same price. The other big difference between the two laptops is that the new Swift Edge opts for AMD Ryzen 6000 processors, while the Swift 5 uses Intel 12th Gen CPUs.

Acer is releasing the Swift Edge in the US this Friday with a Ryzen 7 6800U, carrying eight cores, 4MB of L2 cache, 16MB of L3 cache, and a clock speed of 2.7 GHz that can boost to 4.7 GHz. Combined with 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 1TB of PCIE 4.0 SSD storage, it’ll have a $1,500 MSRP.

Enlarge / The Swift Edge weighs 2.58 pounds and is 0.55 inches thick.

Acer

That’s the same MSRP that the Swift 5 has as of writing and when we reviewed it in July. For that price, you get an Intel Core i7-1260P with four performance cores (2.1-4.7 GHz), eight efficient cores (1.5-3.4 GHz), and 18MB of L3 cache, plus the same RAM and storage specs as the aforementioned Swift Edge configuration.

The Swift Edge and Swift 5 have similar port selection, as well: two USB-C ports (although, the Intel PC’s ports have Thunderbolt 4 certification and work at up to 40Gbps, rather than the Swift Edge ports’ 20Gbps), two USB-A ports (USB 3.2 Gen 1), one HDMI 2.1 port, and a 3.5 mm jack.

Enlarge / The Intel-based Acer Swift 5.

However, the Swift Edge could have a notable, well, edge, when it comes to the screen. It has a 16-inch, 3840×2400 OLED non-touch display, compared to the 14-inch, 2560×1600 IPS touchscreen on the Swift 5. The OLED screen is specced with 100 percent DCI-P3 color coverage, up to 500 nits of brightness, and VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification. In our Acer Swift 5 review, we recorded 541 nits and 83.1 percent DCI-P3 coverage.

Of course, there’s more to a laptop than its specs sheet; we’d have to get a closer look at things like build quality (the Swift Edge has a magnesium-alloy chassis), audio, the webcam, and the display in action. But an early look at those specs shows that you can upgrade in other places if you’re interested in an AMD CPU over an Intel one.

And there’s good reason to be. Our Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 review tested an equally specced Ryzen 7 Pro 6850U (the Swift Edge should eventually be offered in this US with this CPU too, an Acer rep confirmed to Ars Technica) and found impressive performance, including generally stronger battery life and integrated Radeon 680M graphics when compared against Intel’s 12th Gen mobile chips. The Swift Edge won’t necessarily be as powerful as a $1,900, business-focused ThinkPad, but Ryzen 6000 has potential for Acer to leverage.

Just as there’s frequently a so-called Intel tax on PCs, there’s usually an OLED tax on battery life, too. Acer claims the Swift Edge’s 54 Wh battery can last up to 10.5 hours of video playback, eight hours browsing the web, and 7.5 hours on the MobileMark 2018 benchmark. Those are better numbers than the smaller Swift 5 claims with its 56 Wh battery (14, 14, and 7.5 hours, respectively).

Enlarge / There’s also a 1080p webcam in the Swift Edge.

Acer

Acer’s Swift Edge is a new addition to Acer’s Swift lineup of thin-and-light clamshells, which includes the Swift 5 flagship ultralight, and Swift X AMD and Swift X Intel, which both include dedicated graphics cards. The Swift Edge continues a trend we’ve seen over the past few years as AMD chips increasingly find their way into not just more laptop models, but more higher-end designs. The “Edge” moniker may also help AMD shake a reputation that has many consumers considering its chips as a budget alternative to Intel.

The Swift Edge launches this Friday at $1,500 as specced above (SKU SFA16-41-R7SU). It should eventually start at a Ryzen 5 6600U and go up to 32GB of memory, but an Acer rep told Ars that it may not sell these configurations in the US.

Overwatch 2 Servers Hit By “Mass DDoS Attack” On Launch Day

It’s a new era for Blizzard’s Overwatch series – with the company rolling out Overwatch 2 across multiple platforms including the Nintendo Switch today. It’s free-to-play, features cross-platform play and progression and can be downloaded now from the Switch eShop.

Unfortunately, the launch hasn’t gone entirely to plan. In a post on social media, company president Mike Ybarra revealed the game’s servers have apparently been on the receiving end of a “mass DDoS attack”, which has been creating a lot of drop and connection issues.

Blizzard’s customer support page has shared a list of known issues and bugs, and what problems have been resolved so far.

Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller has also shared a brief update (via social media), mentioning how there’s been a second attack, and the team would be “all hands on deck” throughout the night.

“We’re steadily making progress on server issues and stability, as well as working through a second DDoS attack. We’re all hands on deck and will continue to work throughout the night. Thank you for your patience – we’ll share more info as it becomes available.”

When these issues are sorted – Overwatch 2 will offer players new heroes (Junker Queen, Sojourn and Kiriko), six new maps, a new 5v5 versus format, new modes (including Push and a redesigned comp mode), cosmetics, and a new ping system. A PvE mode will be released next year.

Loot Box have also been replaced by an all-new item shop, and there’s now also a free and premium battle pass (1000 Overwatch coins – $10 USD) – giving players immediate access to new heroes when they’re added, and other unlockables such as skins. Season One is now live and Season 2 will add a new tank hero and map. New seasons will follow every nine weeks.

How has your own experience been with Overwatch 2 so far? Tell us below.

Football Matt Ryan used to cross 60,000 passing yards contains a 28-3 reminder

Getty Images

Some references to Atlanta blowing a 28-3 third-quarter lead in Super Bowl LVI to the Patriots are intentional, such as the number of diamonds on the ring. (To the chagrin of Falcons owner Arthur Blank.) Or the average value of one of Tom Brady‘s contracts. ($28.3 million.)

Other references just sort of happen.

Here’s one. Via Stephen Holder of ESPN.com, the ball that Colts quarterback Matt Ryan used on Sunday when crossing the 60,000-yard passing barrier is on display at the Hall of Fame. It has a prominent serial number under the team’s logo.

283.

“I had no idea,” Ryan said when asked about it on Friday. “I never even look at the serial number.” (Surely, he was thrilled to get that question.)

Ryan became the eighth quarterback in NFL history to throw for 60,000 or more yards. He did it in 223 career games. Only Drew Brees managed the feat faster, in 215.

Ryan (60,087) ranks at No. 8 on the all-time yardage list. Barring the unexpected, he’ll catch Dan Marino (61,361) this season, along with Philip Rivers (63,440), and maybe even Ben Roethlisberger (64,088). Ryan has plenty more work to do to get to the next rung on the ladder — Brett Favre, with 71,838. If/when Ryan does, he’ll need just another 103 to jump Peyton Manning.

Whether Ryan finishes with 65,000 or 70,000 or 75,000 or some other thousand, here’s hoping that the three numbers following the comma aren’t 283.

Reminder: Splatoon 3’s First Splatfest Starts Today

Image: Nintendo

Splatoon 3’s Splatfest World Premiere is home to Splatoon 3’s first Splatfest, and the event kicks off today in all regions! Aptly taking place on World Rock Paper Scissors Day, you’ll be able to try out the new Splatfests, including the brand new Tri-Color Turf War, in online matches throughout the day.

The Splatfest is split into two halves – the first six hours will be dedicated to the Splatfest Battles, where it’s 1-v-1 paint-splattering battles all the way. Then, for the second six hours, you’ll be getting into some 4-v-2-v-2 battles with a messy triple-team battle. To join in the Splatfest, you’ll need to download the Splatfest World Premiere demo and swear allegiance to one of the three teams (let us know what you’re going for in our poll!).

Once you boot up the demo, you might notice that you’re given a code on the screen (or are emailed one). This code gives you a seven-day free Nintendo Switch Online trial (if you’re not already subscribed to the service), so make sure if you redeem it so you can get in on the mess!

As a reminder, here are the times when the Splatfest starts in your region:

  • Europe: August 27th (9am BST / 10am CEST to 9pm BST / 10pm CEST) – first half starts at 9am/10am, the second half starts at 3pm/4pm
  • North America: August 27th (9am PDT / 12pm EDT to 9pm PDT) August 28th (12am EDT) – first half starts at 9am/12pm, the second half starts at 3pm/6pm
  • Japan: August 28th (9am to 9pm JST) – first half starts at 9am, and the second half starts at 3pm

Good luck! And maybe we’ll see you out there.

Random: We’ve Been Waiting Over Half A Decade For A “New” Mainline Zelda Game

Image: Nintendo

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an amazing game and we probably could keep playing it forever, but as you might recall, it’s now been well over five years since this latest entry in the series was released (and next March will mark six). Yes, we’re talking about brand new adventures here – so that’s not including remakes like Skyward Sword HD or spin-offs.

With this in mind, today marks the “longest ever gap” in “new” releases in the history of The Legend of Zelda series. The previous record was the time between the Game Boy classic Link’s Awakening (1993) and the N64 hit The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998). This fact was highlighted by the Twitter account ‘BombosMedallion’ – noting how it was approximately five years, five months, and 15 days between these particular titles:

This new gap between releases is set to get even bigger – with Nintendo announcing earlier this year it would be delaying The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 until Spring 2023. No exact date has been locked in yet, so this is subject to change. It’s also worth considering the fact that the world was turned upside down over the past few years due to the pandemic, and development schedules at game companies around the globe haven’t always gone to plan.

When the sequel was delayed earlier this year in March, series’ boss Eiji Aonuma mentioned how the team wanted this next experience to be “something special”. The sequel to BOTW was originally announced way back at E3 in 2019. And as games get bigger and better with new tech and larger open worlds, wait times on big-budget titles such as Zelda will likely get longer.

One other Nintendo series that’s been in a lengthy development cycle is Metroid Prime – with the fourth entry’s development being scrapped and restarted alongside Retro Studios in 2019. Other games like Grand Theft Auto V and even The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim have spanned across three console generations – and have now been ported to multiple platforms. So games are not only taking longer, but in some cases, they’re hanging around for a much longer time – with post-launch DLC and support.

How do you feel waiting this long for a new mainline Legend of Zelda game? Is five plus years in between new releases too long for such an important Nintendo franchise like Zelda, or are you happy for Nintendo to take as much time as it needs? Let us know in the comments.

Reminder: Clear Your iPhone Cache Every Month or So

Your iPhone does a lot of work. It wakes you up in the morning, handles your texts, lets you browse through your preferred social media apps and allows you to look up any weird, one-off facts you want to know. But that web browsing adds up over time, which is why you should make a routine out of clearing your cache.

Regardless of whether you prefer Chrome or Safari or any other browser, your phone gets digitally cluttered over time. Clearing your cache gives your browser a little reset, speeding up your web browsing, whether you’re using iOS 15 or the public beta of iOS 16. You can also manage your iPhone’s storage to help get it running fast again.

Clearing your cache is like clearing off your browser’s countertops. Typically, visiting a website requires your phone to download information like photos, banners and other data. To help speed up that process, most internet browsers will store some of that data in a cache so it’s easier to retrieve. It’s the same idea as tossing your keys on the kitchen counter because they’re easy to pick up the next time you need them.

Things become less convenient when your browser’s cache gets outdated and the data being retrieved no longer matches the data actually being used on the website. The result? Slower load speeds and wonky website formatting. This is the equivalent of tossing your keys and your mail, coat, reusable cup and whatever else on your counter. Suddenly, you don’t have room to do anything.

That’s why clearing your cache can help: It gives sites a fresh start in your browser and frees up some space in your storage. Note that clearing your cache will sign you out of sites you’re currently logged into. Still, it’s generally worth that mild inconvenience about every month to keep things moving quickly.

Here are step-by-step guides on how to clear your cache on your iPhone based on the browser you use.

How to clear your iPhone cache in Safari

Safari is the default browser on iPhones, and you can clear your Safari cache in a few short steps. Starting with iOS 11, following this process will affect all devices signed in to your iCloud account. As a result all your devices’ caches will be cleared, and you’ll need to sign in to everything the next time you use them. Here’s what to do.

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

2. Select Safari from the list of apps.

3. Go to Advanced > Website Data.

4. Scroll down and select Clear History and Website Data.

5. Choose Remove Now in the pop-up box.

Then you’re set!

How to clear your iPhone cache in Chrome

It’s easy to clear your iPhone cache in Chrome.

James Martin/CNET

Chrome is another popular browser for iPhone users. The overall process for clearing your Chrome cache requires a few more steps, and you’ll need to do things through the Chrome browser itself. Here’s how.

1. Open the Chrome app.

2. Select the three dots in the bottom right to open more options.

3. Scroll down and select Settings.

4. Select Privacy in the next menu.

5. Then select Clear Browsing Data to open up one last menu.

6. Select the intended time range at the top of the menu (anywhere from Last Hour to All Time).

7. Make sure that Cookies, Site Data is selected, along with Cached Images and Files. Finally, hit Clear Browsing Data at the bottom of the screen.

How to clear your iPhone cache in Firefox

If you’re a Firefox devotee, don’t worry. Clearing the cache on your iPhone is pretty straightforward. Just follow these steps.

1. Click the hamburger menu in the bottom right corner to open up options.

2. Choose Settings at the bottom of the menu.

3. Select Data Management in the Privacy section.

4. You can select Website Data to clear data for individual sites, or select Clear Private Data at the bottom of the screen to clear data from all selected fields.

Testing iOS 16 (Edit/Delete Sent Messages, New Lock Screen…

16:22

What happens when you clear the cache?

Clearing your cache removes the website data your phone stored locally to prevent having to download that data upon each new visit. The data in your cache builds over time and can end up slowing things down if it becomes too bulky. (My phone had about 150MB of data stored in Chrome when I checked.) Clearing that data gives sites a fresh start, which may fix some loading errors and speed up your browser. However, clearing your cache also signs you out of pages, so be prepared to sign in to everything again.

How often do I need to clear my cache?

Most people only need to clear their caches once every month or two. That’s generally the point when your browser will build up a cache large enough to start slowing things down. If you frequent a large number of sites, you should err on the side of clearing your cache more often.

Novavax Stock: Your Friendly Reminder To Cash Out (NASDAQ:NVAX)

donfiore/iStock via Getty Images

Investment Thesis

With Politico reporting the potential approval of NVX-CoV2373 by the US FDA on 13 July 2022, this is a friendly reminder for those looking to cash out the Novavax, Inc (NASDAQ:NVAX) stock. The time is finally near, though admittedly much slower than expected since NVAX had submitted for US regulatory approval since 31 January 2022. The approval process for its vaccine has been oddly drawn out, given the swift approvals granted to its competitors, such as Pfizer (PFE) and Moderna (MRNA), for the youngest age group. Nonetheless, we are not here to speculate on the US FDA’s reasons, since there are more significant problems here.

Though we still believe in the NVAX vaccine’s efficacy and its traditional protein subunit technology, its management has proven to be slower than expected in getting any of its products approved by the US FDA. In addition, there is no further news from its global supply chain/ manufacturing plants, potentially due to the “destruction of demand” for most COVID-19 vaccines, with PFE already feeling the heat.

As the NVAX bulls continue to say, some could be holding out for its more traditional vaccine and/or its combined COVID/ Flu shot. However, we are less hopeful for now. We believe that these vaccines need to be approved first, before we can glean any real-life data and global demand, before justifying NVAX’s current premium.

Still, Minimal Novavax Vaccine Deliveries

Ministry of External Affairs in India

By now, NVAX has only shipped 157.01M vaccines out from its manufacturing partner’s facility in India, Serum Institute of India. Though the US government had also ordered 3.2M doses contingent on the US FDA approval, these numbers are far lower than the original APA of 110M doses as part of its $1.8B funding commitment. Now that is somewhat underwhelming, since a similar “demand destruction” was reported in the EU with only 90.4M doses of NVX-CoV2373 delivered out of 400M APAs.

With the US FDA requesting Omicron-specific vaccines, NVAX would be late again, with its clinical trials/ results only released by the end of Q3’22. In the meantime, Moderna had released satisfactory results for its Omicron-specific vaccines by 22 June 2022, with Pfizer also announcing its findings on 25 June 2022. Therefore, given the historical speed of the US FDA’s approval and their manufacturing prowess, we expect Pfizer and Moderna to win the upcoming race as well, potentially leaving NVAX in the dust.

As for the combined COVID-19/ Flu shot, NVAX may potentially stand on the global stage, since Pfizer’s and Moderna’s pipelines are either still in the pre-clinical stage or Phase 1. However, it also remains to be seen when its NanoFlu will be approved, despite the excellent clinical trial results since March 2020 and the appointment of a new leadership team specific to NanoFlu in October 2020. Frustrating, to say the least, given the annual global demand for Influenza shots worth $6.59B in 2021.

NVAX Underperformed In The Show-Me-The-Money Game

S&P Capital IQ

NVAX has been underperforming in its financial segment in the past few quarters, despite the previous hype. However, it is also essential to note that the company finally reported positive net income profitability of $0.2B from revenues of $1.53B in FQ1’22, indicating a net income margin of 13% then. Not too bad for starters, indeed.

Nonetheless, it is also apparent that NVAX has yet to generate positive Free Cash Flows (FCF), with -$0.11B of FCF and -15% of FCF margins in its latest quarter, a vital point for its future expansion, pipeline research, and R&D efforts. As a result, the company could potentially rely on more debt and share dilution for its future capital, as highlighted in our previous analysis.

S&P Capital IQ

Since our previous analysis, NVAX’s projected revenue and net incomes have fortunately remained broadly in line, with a similar tapering by FY2024. Analysts will also be closely watching its FQ2’22 performance on 4 August 2022, with consensus revenue estimates of $1.02B and EPS of $5.54, indicating a YoY improvement of 241.2% and 85.7%, respectively. Given NVAX’s deliveries of approximately 58M doses in FQ2’22, there might be a chance for stock recovery post the FQ2’22 earnings call, since it represents a 41.4% increase in delivery QoQ. We shall see.

In the meantime, we encourage you to read our previous article on NVAX, which would help you better understand its position and market opportunities.

  • Novavax: Avoid This Cancer At All Costs

So, Is NVAX Stock A Buy, Sell, Or Hold?

NVAX 5Y EV/Revenue and P/E Valuations

S&P Capital IQ

NVAX is currently trading at an EV/NTM Revenue of 1.09x and NTM P/E of 3.64x, lower than its 5Y mean of 24.95x and 5.06x, respectively. However, who are we kidding? The stock’s valuation was never really in the picture, since it moves mostly on investors’ sentiment and news. As of 12 July 2022, the stock is trading at $69.76, down 74.8% from its 52 weeks high of $277.8, though at a premium of 200% from its 52 weeks low of $34.88. The stock has also rallied by 33.36% from our previous analysis, from $52.31 on 8 June 2022 to $69.76 on 12 July 2022, making all NVAX investors happy, especially those looking for a higher exit point.

NVAX 5Y Stock Price

Seeking Alpha

Therefore, given the multitude of reasons above, we are not convinced of the consensus estimates’ attractive buy rating with a price target of $126.50 with an 81.34% upside. We will be lucky to see the stock reach $100 in the next few weeks ( post US FDA approval and FQ2’22 earnings call ), providing a comfortable cushion for those looking to cash out. As for the bulls, I love your enthusiasm, really, since I was a believer too before the management disappoints. It might be interesting to see how NVAX performs in FQ2’22, since we might be feeling a little hopeful again. Good luck to all!

Nonetheless, we still reiterate our sell rating for the NVAX stock, upon the upcoming rally post US FDA approval.
