Alabama airline worker who was sucked into engine remembered as ‘loving mother’ of 3 kids

The Alabama airline worker who died after being sucked into a plane engine at Montgomery Regional Airport on New Year’s Eve is being remembered as a “loving mother” of three children.

Courtney Edwards, 34, has been identified as the ramp agent for Piedmont Airlines who the National Transportation Safety Board says was killed shortly after an Embraer 170 plane operated by Envoy Air landed with 63 passengers on board.

“Courtney was a Ground Handling agent for Piedmont Airlines, a subsidiary of American Airlines, a loving mother of 3 kids and a wonderful daughter to her beloved mother, Natalie English of Montgomery, Alabama,” a GoFundMe page set up by a fellow union member says. “Please know that this tragedy has and will affect her mother, family, friends and kids for years to come.”

As of Wednesday, the GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $100,000 for Edwards’ “3 beautiful kids to help cover funeral expenses, day-to-day expenses and any other expenses needed to care for the children.”

ALABAMA AIRLINE WORKER SUCKED INTO ENGINE WITH ‘BANG,’ PLANE FILLED WITH PASSENGERS SHOOK VIOLENTLY, NTSB SAYS

The Communication Workers of America Local 3645 said in early January that Edwards was one of its members.

“Losing Courtney was a terrible tragedy and her leaving behind 3 beautiful children to grow up without a mother is just disheartening to us all,” its president, Donielle Prophete, told FOX Business on Wednesday.

“I’m elated that the GoFundMe account is being embraced by so many people including other airline workers!” she added.

Richard Honeycutt, vice president of CWA District 3 and chair of CWA’s Passenger Service Airline Council, said in a statement that Edwards “was away from her family working on New Year’s Eve making sure passengers got to where they needed to be for the holidays.

“She represents the very best of our CWA airport members, who constantly make sacrifices to serve the flying public,” he added. “Her memory will live on in the hearts and minds of her fellow CWA members and those closest to her.”

A report from the NTSB this week said the aircraft involved in the incident “shook violently” and shut off with a “bang” when it happened.

The FAA said the incident occurred on the airport ramp near an American Airlines Embraer E170. (WAKA)

The preliminary report states the aircraft had an inoperative auxiliary power unit and that its captain signaled for it to be connected to ground power after arriving from Dallas, opting to “leave both engines running for the required two-minute engine cool down period.”

MAJOR PLANE SHORTAGE FUELS TURBULENT SKIES

As the captain was shutting off the plane’s right engine, he received a message that the aircraft’s front cargo door had opened and “the first officer opened his cockpit window to inform the ramp agent that the engines were still operating,” the report says.

The NTSB found that the captain then told passengers to remain seated until the seat belt sign turned off and said to his colleague that the airplane’s left engine would be shut down after it was connected to ground power.

“Immediately thereafter, he saw a warning light illuminate and the airplane shook violently followed by the immediate automatic shutdown of the number 1 [left] engine,” the report says.

All inbound and outbound flights were initially grounded at Alabama’s Montgomery Regional Airport, but operations resumed about seven hours after the incident. (WAKA)

The NTSB, citing surveillance video, said Edwards was seen “walking along the leading edge of the left wing and directly in front of the number one engine” before she was “subsequently pulled off her feet and into the operating engine.”

The report said just prior to the plane’s arrival, the ramp agents held two safety briefings “to reiterate that the engines would remain running until ground power was connected.”

One of the ramp agents reported hearing a “bang” as the engine shut down, the NTSB also said.

Did she inspire or fail to deliver? Readers on how Jacinda Ardern will be remembered | Jacinda Ardern

Jacinda Ardern’s legacy has divided reader opinion. While many described the outgoing New Zealand prime minister as “inspirational” and praised her ability to manage a crisis, some responses also revealed anger at her handling of the Covid response and criticism for failure to deliver on promises.

Below is a selection of reader comments conveying the range of reactions when we asked the question: how will you remember Jacinda Ardern’s time as New Zealand PM.

Christchurch shootings and White Island / Whakaari disaster

When it comes to her response to the Christchurch mosque shootings and the White Island / Whakaari volcano disaster, Ardern, whose last official engagement is on Tuesday, was seen by many as a “crisis leader” and much admired.

“She has done a remarkable job as the prime minister. She will be remembered as a crisis leader – erupting volcano, global pandemic, terrorist attack … She did unite us as a ‘team of five million’. She brought us closer together and navigated the country through one crisis after another.” Michal Chudzinski-Pawlowski, Auckland.

“The defining moment has to be the way she handled the Christchurch terror attack … She’s definitely up there with the best leaders to have ever scaled the heights of prime ministership.” Stephen Matich, Melbourne

Coronavirus

On Covid, many welcomed the tough approach which in the first years of the pandemic saw New Zealand impose harsh restrictions and seal its borders.

“Very many thousands of people are alive and well today because of her and her government’s handling of the Covid pandemic.” Eileen Bowell, Hamilton.

“She saved thousands of lives during Covid when others could have cost us.” Michelle Bissenden, Dunedin.

However, others were unforgiving of the hardline stance. One reader, who wished to remain anonymous, wrote: “I missed giving my mother a hug before she died suddenly early 2021 due to Covid restrictions. The cost to so many New Zealanders of her draconian lockdown and management of [quarantine system] MIQ was unreasonable and breached our human rights.”

Esther Pocock, from Sweden, said Ardern “presided over a policy of rare cruelty and created divisions between Kiwis to maintain her hold”.

“She illegally locked approximately one million Kiwis out of their home country during one of the worst pandemics in living memory, leaving us to fend for ourselves and forcibly separating us from our families, and locked the rest of the country in.”

Domestic policies

Some readers were critical of Ardern’s broader domestic policy record.

“The promise of more affordable housing has not been achieved; poverty among the poorest has not improved. There has been little progress on any reforms and so her legacy will be not remembered well.” Nick Gibson, New Zealand.

“She saved all her niceness for the world stage… She made a lot of promises and set a lot of goals and failed to fulfil any.” Mike ONeill, New Zealand.

Mike Richards, Hamilton, New Zealand, said Ardern “divided the nation”.

“She promised to prioritise child poverty, yet her policies made people poorer and created a major cost of living crisis … Her Covid policies kept children out of school for almost a year and now we have a ram-raiding crime crisis. She has led the most incompetent government we have ever had, capable of spending millions on committees and reports, but totally incapable of delivering anything.”

Leadership

Yet most admired Ardern’s character and leadership style, with supporters regarding her as an inspirational leader.

Clint Baker, South Auckland, reflected on the “Jacinda effect”.

“I will remember Jacinda’s time in office as a time when New Zealanders could be proud of the reputation she gained for us around the world as a country. The ‘Jacinda effect’. I cannot recall any other leader, either here in NZ or in Australia having so many challenges during their time in office … Ardern’s responses were always well articulated with warmth and empathy.”

“She was an inspirational leader during a very difficult time; she was the right leader for the time; her compassion and understanding were so refreshing and an antidote to the unpleasant, divisive politics of some in this country and other parts of the world.” David McKenzie, New Zealand.

Dominic Hayes, Belgium said the 42-year-old “inspired a new generation of leaders”.

“A breath of fresh air in politics, genuine compassion, empathy and humanity, but tough when she needed to be.”

Some of the responses have been edited for brevity

Aaron Carter Remembered By Nick Carter, The Backstreet Boys

Friends, fans, and former collaborators are paying tribute to singer and actor Aaron Carter after he died on Saturday at age 34. Known for hits like “I Want Candy” and “That’s How I Beat Shaq,” Aaron grew up in the entertainment industry, releasing his first album in 1997 at age 9. That same year, he performed as an opening act for the Backstreet Boys, his older brother Nick’s band. In addition to guest-starring on shows like Sabrina the Teenage Witch and 7th Heaven, Aaron made a memorable appearance on Lizzie McGuire, sharing a kiss with his then-girlfriend Hilary Duff in a Christmas episode. But over the course of his career in the spotlight, the 2000s heartthrob faced challenges with his mental health and with substance abuse. In 2019, his brother Nick and sister Angel filed a restraining order against him, citing safety concerns and expressing hope that he would get “proper treatment.”

“My heart is broken,” Nick wrote on Instagram following news of Aaron’s death. “Even though my brother and I have had a complicated relationship, my love for him has never ever faded.” The Backstreet Boys honored Aaron during their London show, with the band holding a grieving Nick. Duff also took to social media to remember the late singer, writing in a statement, “I’m deeply sorry that life was so hard for you and that you had to struggle in-front of the whole world. You had a charm that was absolutely effervescent … boy did my teenage self love you deeply.” Former Disney star Raven-Symone told Entertainment Tonight, in the wake of Aaron’s death, that the world needed to focus on mental health. “It’s a real thing, and we need to stop losing our youth to it,” she said. “Maybe one day people will get the hint.” Below, more tributes to Aaron’s life from Paris Hilton, Diane Warren, *NSYNC, New Kids on the Block, and others who knew him.
