Regé-Jean Page Rejected Big Bridgerton Salary Bump to Return

Photo: LIAM DANIEL/NETFLIX

He really was set on pulling out of the show, what else can we say? The Hollywood Reporter reports that Regé-Jean Page made the decision to leave Bridgerton a little less amicably than what was initially believed, with the hunky Brit apparently rejecting an opportunity to return “as a guest star in three to five episodes” of the second season at a cushy pay increase to $50,000 per episode. Sources told THR that Page “declined for a multitude of reasons,” which included wanting to focus on his flourishing film career and believing that his Bridgerton role ended on a high note. Upon the news of Page’s departure last week, the actor issued a statement of gratitude to the show for the opportunity it gave him, noting that he was drawn to the Hot Duke™ because it was presented as a one-season gig. “I get to come in, I get to contribute my bit and then the Bridgerton family rolls on,” he explained. “There is also value in completing these arcs and sticking the landing.” The show’s second season, as previously revealed, will move the action away from Daphne and the duke to Anthony as its star suitor. So don’t cry because it’s over — smile because all of those eye-fucks happened.

Kim Kardashian among mourners as Regé-Jean Page leaves Bridgerton | Bridgerton

Large parts of the internet were in mourning on Saturday, over the news that Regé-Jean Page, the breakout star of Netflix’s Bridgerton, will not return for season two.

Posting news of Page’s departure on social media, the makers of the hit series adopted the style of Lady Whistledown, the gossipy narrator of the series, which is set in Regency England and gained swift notoriety for its steamy sex scenes, often featuring Page.

“While all eyes turn to Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s quest to find a Viscountess,” the note said, “we bid adieu to Réne-Jean Page, who so triumphantly played the Duke of Hastings. We’ll miss Simon’s presence on screen.”

That was a reference to Page’s character, Simon Basset.

Heartbreak emojis filled the comments below the post. Celebrities were among those saddened.

“Wait!!! WHAT????” commented Kim Kardashian.

Shonda Rhimes, whose production company Shondaland created Bridgerton, paid tribute to Page, reminding fans: “He’s just waiting to be binge-watched all over again.”

Page played a central role in Bridgerton as its resident heartthrob. In December last year, he told the Guardian it was “a glamorous, ambitious Cinderella fantasy of love and romance” and saluted its colour-blind casting.

“We’re seeing this Regency romance through a feminist lens,” he added, “examining what masculinity means for a broken antihero like my character and how he can then allow himself to change and be loved.”

This week, Page told Variety he knew his time on the show would be short-lived. His character was always meant to experience “a one-season arc”, he said, adding: “It felt like a limited series. I get to come in, I get to contribute my bit and then the Bridgerton family rolls in.”

Netflix has reported that Bridgerton is its most-watched series ever, 82m households having watched it within 28 days of release.

The Duke of Hastings was Page’s breakout role. He went on to host Saturday Night Live and is set to appear in a Netflix spy thriller, The Gray Man, alongside Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans. He is also set to take a lead role in a film adaptation of the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.

‘Bridgerton’ star Regé-Jean Page hosts ‘SNL’ and Twitter melts down: ‘The thirst is real’

Regé-Jean Page came to play — and to smolder — in his inaugural Saturday Night Live hosting gig. The breakout Bridgerton star capitalized on the success of Netflix’s blockbuster period romance, which is officially the most successful show in the streaming service’s history, with a lively sketch comedy debut that had viewers applauding and hearts fluttering. And the British-Zimbabwean actor leaned into his sex symbol status. “People associate me with being this smoldering, sensual smokeshow,” he said in his monologue, which was frequently interrupted by the passionate cheers of devoted fans. “But I assure you, I’m just a regular guy.” Sure… a regular guy who knows how to expertly seduce the camera.

Page was joined onstage by his “personal liaisons” Aidy Bryant and Ego Nwodim, as well as Chloe Fineman, who arrived in her Regency-era finest to play his Bridgerton co-lead — and rumored real-life love interest — Phoebe Dynevor. And the performers couldn’t hide their own love for the brooding, beautiful Duke he plays on TV, even though he kept insisting otherwise. “I’m nothing like my character — I’m actually quite shy,” Page said, just before striking another smoldering pose as the SNL band cranked up the sexy music.

Bryant and Nwodim went on to cite their favorite scenes from the series… most of which featured the host and “extremely hot sex man” in various stages of undress. And, once again, the audience expressed their extreme appreciation for his commitment to the role. Page repaid them with one final bit of romantic flair, crooning the Righteous Brothers favorite “Unchained Melody,” with Ghost-level energy. “I’m happy to play the Duke: I’ve been around for awhile, though,” Page said afterwards. “I was in Roots, I’ve played high-flying lawyers. Yet somehow people just want me to be this guy who says, ‘I burn for you.'” After she found her voice again, Fineman spoke for the Studio 8H audience by saying, “Yeah, I mean why would anyone want you to do that?”

It’s safe to say that Twitter was vibing big time on Page’s energy.

And the love for Page didn’t dissipate after that smoldering monologue: many noted how the SNL writing staff gave him multiple opportunities to show off his range beyond being the handsomest guy in the room. In fact, the obligatory Bridgerton sketch was saved for the end of the show… which was just as well since it was also the weakest skit of the night. Whether he was singing sea shanties, wearing a face shield or discussing Taylor Swift, Page had the audience in the palm of his hand. After tonight, his career is officially on fire.

Saturday Night Live airs Saturdays at 11:30 p.m. on NBC

Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page is praised by producer Shonda Rhimes for the TIME100 Next list

He set hearts fluttering with his charismatic lead performance on Netflix’s hit period romance series Bridgerton.

And now Regé-Jean Page is being serenaded by Shonda Rhimes for the 2021 TIME100 Next list.

The 51-year-old writer and producer sounded almost like one of his lovestruck fans as gushed about the 31-year-old actor, calling him ‘finer than fiction’ and ‘better than any dream.’

Praised: René-Jean Page, 31, was serenaded in the pages of the TIME100 Next list by his Bridgerton producer Shonda Rhimes, 51; Page seen in 2018 in LA

‘You might dream of him, the one we call the Duke of Hastings,’ she began. ‘But in reality, Regé-Jean Page is finer than fiction and better than any dream.’

The Scandal creator went on to describe Page as a ‘rare actor, one who brings an intensity, an intelligence and a precision to his work, providing endless depth to any scene.’

She continued, writing that the actor’s enveloping performances build ‘a vibrant world for us to enter, making it impossible to imagine any other actor playing the role.’

Rhimes concluded the short tribute by adding that ‘Regé is a singular talent whose prospects are limitless.’

Effusive praise: ‘You might dream of him, the one we call the Duke of Hastings,’ Rhimes began. ‘But in reality, Regé-Jean Page is finer than fiction and better than any dream’; seen in 2019

Star to watch: The Scandal creator went on to describe Page as a ‘rare actor, one who brings an intensity, an intelligence and a precision to his work, providing endless depth to any scene’; still from Bridgerton

‘Today, he may be our duke. By tomorrow… not even I can dream big enough to imagine,’ she wrote.

Page stars on Bridgerton as Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings.

His chemistry with his costar Phoebe Dynevor, who plays Daphne Bridgerton, has been widely acclaimed, and the series as a whole earned an 89 percent fresh rating among critics sampled by Rotten Tomatoes.

Page and Dynevor were so convincing as fictional lovers that rumors cropped up that the two must have dated while filming the Netflix series, though the actress put that chatter to bed earlier this week in an interview with You Magazine.

‘I’d love to say there was really something between us. But no, it has always been strictly professional,’ she said.

‘There was so much pressure on us to get it right that it was all about the work. We have a really professional working relationship,’ continued. ‘I’m glad for that, actually. It would be very complicated if it went further.’

Rising star: Prior to starring in Brigerton, Page was best known for appearing in the 2016 miniseries version of Roots and the ABC legal drama For The People; pictured in 2016 in NYC

Oddly, when Page was asked about a potential relationship during a January interview with Access Hollywood, he avoided giving a straight answer.

‘I think that everything you need to know is on camera,’ he said, before praising the show’s ‘beautiful scripts.’

Prior to starring in Brigerton, Page was best known for appearing in the Tessa Thompson drama Sylvie’s Love, along with the 2016 miniseries version of Roots and the ABC legal drama For The People.

He’ll be introduced to a new audience this weekend when he hosts Saturday Night Live for the first time.

More to come: Bridgerton is the most recent success for Rhimes, who also worked with Page on For The People. Her next series is about a the Russian-born fraudster known as Anna Delvey; seen in 2018

Bridgerton is the most recent success for Rhimes, who also worked with Page on For The People.

Next up, she’ll be writing and producing the series Inventing Anna for Netflix.

The show, which she also created, is based on the New York Magazine article How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People, about a Russian-born woman who pretended to be a wealthy German heiress in order to defraud New York socialites.
