FTX crypto founder Sam Bankman-Fried thought jail would be ‘like The Shawshank Redemption’: report

Sam Bankman-Fried reportedly said that he thought his time in prison in the Bahamas would be like the 1994 classic film “The Shawshank Redemption.”

“I thought that it was going to be like The Shawshank Redemption,” the disgraced FTX founder and CEO told Forbes in an exclusive interview published Thursday.

The motion picture starring Morgan Freeman was nominated for seven Academy Awards.

The former billionaire told the publication that he was assigned to a room with five other inmates in the facility’s infirmary, keeping him away from the general population.

Bankman-Fried painted a vivid picture of life at Fox Hill, showering with a garden hose, drying off with a towel that was three inches by five inches and sleeping in the “worst possible bed that you can imagine, made of cardboard and a piece of semi-soft plastic on top of stilts.”

Once the head of the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency exchange, he said he used his suit jacket that he wore for court appearances as a pillow.

The 30-year-old made friends with the other inmates and did not feel in danger, although some of them asked him for money.

The worst part, he told Forbes, was the lack of internet.

“I didn’t realize how much more important than everything else combined internet access is to me, but that was like 80% of the total cost of being in prison, ” he said, noting that he would occasionally get access to a newspaper.

Bankman-Fried claimed that he was limited to one 30-minute phone call during his entire stay, but was allowed to meet with his Bahamian lawyers daily.

In December, he waived his right to fight extradition and agreed to return to the U.S. to face charges. He flew on a private FBI plane to a local police station in White Plains, New York, and his lawyers agreed to a $250 million bail arrangement backed in part by his parents’ $4 million California home, where he is now confined wearing an electronic ankle bracelet. He pleaded not guilty to an array of federal charges he faces for allegedly defrauding customers and investors, entering his plea through his attorneys.

Ender Lilies Dev Announces Redemption Reapers, A New “Dark Fantasy Tactical RPG” Coming Early 2023

If you’re a fan of tactical RPGs, you’ll want to make note of Redemption Reapers, coming to the Switch in February 2023.

This dark fantasy tactical RPG developed by Adglobe and Binary Haze Interactive (ENDER LILIES: Quietus of the Knights) is being brought to life by industry luminaries such as Masayuki Horikawa – known for working on the Fire Emblem series as a director and scenario/level designer, and also Kingdom Hearts III planning.

Here’s a bit about the story, and what to expect from the gameplay, courtesy of the PR:

Hope fades across the land following the sudden appearance of the ruthless Mort armies. Efficient as they are brutal, the macabre forces descend upon civilizations, leaving destruction in the wake of their nightly raids. As entire nations fall to the Mort onslaught, the Ashen Hawk Brigade, a contingent of mercenaries specializing in surprise tactics, band together to fight back against the invading legions.

Lead the Ashen Hawk Brigade in tactical skirmishes on 3D maps. Employ strategic moves, directing units across the battlefield before issuing commands to attack, defend, or deploy skills during each turn. Overcome seemingly insurmountable odds by mastering sneak attacks for extra damage or powerful combo strikes from multiple Brigade members.

Ensure each Brigade member is fit for the trials ahead by outfitting the party with powerful gear. Turn hard-earned spoils of victory into resources for crafting mighty weapons and armor. Upgrade skills to unlock combat abilities capable of turning a ragtag troop of underdogs into courageous champions.

Carve through the Mort and uncover a gripping, mature story of wartime struggles. Witness powerful moments unfold between members of the Brigade during fully voiced cutscenes (recorded in English and Japanese audio) as fighters learn more about their allies and the world around them. Guide the Ashen Hawk Brigade’s rise from obscurity to folk heroes as members grapple with their dark past as a deadly – and despised – organization dubbed “Faithless Reapers.”

It will also feature a “star-studded” voice cast including Kyle McCarley, Allegra Clark, David Lodge and Lucien Dodge. These folks have contributed to series such as 13 Sentinels, NieR: Automata, Dragon Age, Persona 5, Final Fantasy XV, Fire Emblem and the Trails series.

Red Dead Redemption 2 fan with nearly 6,000 hours on Stadia begs Rockstar for character transfer

A Red Dead Redemption player with almost 6,000 hours logged on Google Stadia is begging Rockstar to allow character transfers after the news of the service’s closure.

YouTuber @ItsColourTV (opens in new tab) took to Twitter shortly after the news that Google Stadia is shutting down broke out yesterday. “No, you don’t understand how seriously pissed off I am,” the tweet read, alongside a screenshot that shows that they’ve put 5,907 hours into Red Dead Redemption on Google’s gaming service.

“For context: these hours are on Google Stadia and today Google announced they’ll be shutting down the platform,” a follow-up tweet (opens in new tab) reads, “@RockstarGames please let us do a one-time character transfer I am begging you.” If you aren’t aware, once Google shuts down its Stadia service on January 18, 2023, ItsColourTV’s progress will all be erased from existence, meaning they’ll need to start a new save file on another platform – with all 5,907 hours (approximately 246 days) going to waste.

It seems that fellow Red Dead Redemption players felt sympathetic towards ItsColourTV, with many replying to the tweet with suggestions as to how to save this player’s save. One suggested (opens in new tab) that ItsColourTV use Google Takeout – a data downloading service – to transfer their file to PC, to which they replied: “I don’t play story mode.” Rockstar, if you’re reading this, do our guy a favor and let them transfer their character just this once.

If you’re also about to lose your Stadia save data, why not take a look at our games like Red Dead Redemption list for inspiration on what game to move on to.

Rockstar Pauses Red Dead Redemption, GTA IV Remasters

Screenshot: Rockstar Games

Following recent rumors, Kotaku can confirm via its sources that Rockstar Games is currently focused on developing Grand Theft Auto 6, and has shelved all remakes following the poor reception of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.

Yesterday, a tweet from Tez, an often reliable and trusted GTA insider, caught the attention of many Rockstar fans. According to the tweet, Red Dead Redemption and GTA IV remasters were no longer “on the table,” possibly due to the horrible mess that was last year’s GTA Trilogy remakes. While some questioned if this was true, I can confirm that Tez’s tweet is accurate and lines up with what I’ve been told.

According to sources with knowledge of Rockstar’s plans and future projects, the publisher is hoping that folks will forget all about the critically panned and botched classic GTA remasters released last year while it focuses most of its resources and energy on its next big game, Grand Theft Auto 6, which Rockstar earlier this year confirmed was in development.

However, while the current plan is to get Grand Theft Auto 6 finished and out the door, I’m told a Red Dead Redemption and GTA IV remaster aren’t entirely “out of scope” and could still happen in the future, after GTA 6 ships.

Kotaku has contacted Rockstar Games for comment.

Last year, in our report confirming the existence of the then-rumored GTA Trilogy remasters, we also explained that at the time Rockstar had plans to remaster Red Dead Redemption. At the time of the report, the idea of remastering RDR had been on the table for the publisher for a few years already, but now, in the wake of last year’s remasters flopping and demand for GTA 6 growing, the publisher has shifted plans again and is moving forward to the next big thing and not looking back, at least for the time being.

At the time of that report, I was told by sources that the reception and sales of the remasters would play a big factor in future remastering projects.

For those who don’t remember, 2021’s GTA Trilogy was released in a broken state, filled with graphical bugs and other problems that made the games hard to enjoy on any platform you played. While updates fixed many of these issues, the remastered art and menus still left many players unhappy. It also didn’t help that, in the lead-up to announcing the remastered trilogy, Rockstar and Take-Two went after old fan mods and projects, angering a community who could have stepped in to help fix the botched release.

As for when to expect Grand Theft Auto 6, none of my sources could share any specific details, but it seems that for now, at least, it seems that the plan is to move forward and hope people forget about the past.
