Florida could lose top recruit after massive NIL deal creates controversy
The University of Florida could be close to losing a top football recruit after a $13 million NIL deal has caused some controversy.
Quarterback Jaden Rashada, an All-American from Pittsburg, Calif., is a four-star recruit who signed an NIL deal worth that massive price tag on Nov. 10 with the Gator Collective, reports The Athletic.
“I would venture to say the Gator Collective is paying more guaranteed money than any group in the country,” Eddie Rojas, a former Gators baseball player and head of the Gator Collective, said in April. “When I write a contract, I want to make sure that we actually have the money in our account.”

It doesn’t appear that Rojas’ group did have that money, as they reneged on the deal with Rashada. The Athletic states that the deal had presumptive support from one of the Gator Collective’s top boosters, Hugh Hathcock, who donated almost $13 million last year.
But on Dec. 7, Rashada received a letter from Rojas wishing to terminate their deal. While it’s unclear the exact reason why that happened, the Gators’ football program was caught by surprise as they are not allowed to know specifics of NIL deals with players.

Rashada, though, is still a part of the Gators’ recruiting class for 2023, yet there’s still a catch: He hasn’t enrolled yet.
Early spring enrollment, which is usually what top recruits do to get in the building as quickly as possible to make the transition into college easier, ended on Jan. 13.

And while Rashada did indicate last week that he intends to go to Florida, the early-enrollment status still leaves him in limbo.
Harlen Rashada, Jaden’s father, told 247Sports that he and his son are “working through some things right now with Florida and hoping that they get resolved soon.”

“I just think there’s a high level of trust on both ends there,” Florida head coach Billy Napier said of Rashada when the recruiting class was announced. “I’m really excited about what he’s going to bring to our team. . . . Can’t compliment Jaden enough relative to who he is as a person, as a leader, his character. Jaden is a guy who came here and fell in love with the University of Florida and really connected with a lot of people here. It was sincere.”

Rashada has reportedly been offered a lesser NIL deal than the $13 million – still in the seven-figure range – but litigation could be on the table after the Gator Collective decided to pull the deal. That could only come if he decides not to agree to a new deal.
2024’s No. 1 recruit Dylan Raiola decommits from Ohio State
The Top247’s No. 1 recruit in the 2024 class Dylan Raiola has decommitted from Ohio State, his family tells 247Sports. The 5-star quarterback had been a verbal to the Buckeyes since May 9.
“We have a lot of respect for Coach Day and the Ohio State program,” Raiola’s father Dominic added.
The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Raiola committed to Ohio State over the likes of Georgia, Nebraska, Oregon and USC. All of those programs figure to be in the mix moving forward for the five star.
As a junior, Raiola completed over 64 percent of his passes for 2,435 yards and 22 touchdowns to just five interceptions.
“Everything is back on the table,” the elder Raiola said. “His process is almost like it’s restarting. It’s not close off to anybody.”
Dominic was an All-American at Nebraska where he won the Rimington Trophy given to the nation’s best center before a 14-year career in the NFL. His older sister plays volleyball at TCU.

“Looks the part already from a physical standpoint. Two-sport athlete who also plays baseball and has a nice athletic profile. Well-proportioned build and frame. Sturdy lower body that generates power and velocity on throws. Displays encouraging athleticism that should continue to improve as he develops throughout his career.
“Good stature in the pocket with a smooth easy release. Raiola has above average mobility and is able to buy time while locating his receivers and going through progressions smoothly. Flashes plus arm strength to make the throws from a variety of arm angles with velocity or touch as required. Puts zip on passes even when on the move out of the pocket.
“Willing to stand in the pocket and deliver passes while under pressure. Keeps eyes downfield as the pocket closes. Doesn’t get caught looking at the rush. Features good touch on his deep passes enabling receivers to run underneath to make the catch. Displays good pocket presence and awareness. Capable of tucking the ball to run if needed to gain chunk yardage.
“A young player who has very few holes in his game even with two more years of high school left. Ahead of the curve mechanically and possesses the arm strength that puts him in elite company. The more he plays and has reps his decision making and feel will only get faster and become second nature. Should become a Power Five starter for multiple years and a potential all-conference selection with NFL Draft early-round upside.”
Raiola played his sophomore season at Burleson (Texas) High where he threw for 3,341 yards and 32 touchdowns to just five interceptions.
No. 6 prospect G.G. Jackson becomes first recruit to decommit from North Carolina men’s basketball program since 2003
Elite rising senior G.G. Jackson has decommitted from North Carolina, he announced via social media on Thursday.
Jackson becomes the first prospect to decommit from North Carolina in nearly 20 years; J.R. Smith committed to the Tar Heels in 2003, but opted to go straight to the NBA out of high school. No player in the modern recruiting era has decommitted from the Tar Heels and gone elsewhere for college.
“First I would like to thank God for watching over me and giving me the gift and talent to play basketball,” Jackson wrote on his social media accounts. “To all my coaches from middle school on up and AAU coaches thank you for believing in me and letting me play for your programs. Thank you to coach Hubert Davis and the UNC Basketball staff for recruiting me and giving me a chance to play for your university. My family has stuck by my side since I was born and have been the biggest supporters in my life by guiding me in the right direction.
“I have decided to decommit from UNC to explore other options that can help me grow from a teenage boy to an adult to put me in the best position to reach my dream goal which is the NBA.”

Over the last several months, reclassification rumors have circled around Jackson’s recruitment, although he’s consistently denied that he plans to enroll in college next fall.
“We were looking at it at first,” Jackson told ESPN in April. “But weighing over my options and looking at the different people that reclassed up, seeing how it affected them. I feel like, physically I’m not there yet to play at that college level, so I wanted to stay in my class and just prepare the best that I can.”
However, speculation has ramped up in recent weeks that Jackson ultimately plans to move into the 2022 class and play in college next year. The most likely potential landing spot, sources told ESPN, is South Carolina, which was in the driver’s seat for his commitment until the Gamecocks parted ways with head coach Frank Martin in the spring. New head coach Lamont Paris attempted to land Jackson after taking over, but Jackson committed to North Carolina in late April.
Had Jackson remained committed to North Carolina, one potential complicating factor in any reclassification decision would have been the Tar Heels signing Northwestern transfer Pete Nance from the portal. A 6-foot-10 power forward, Nance plays the same position as Jackson and was signed as a Brady Manek replacement.
A 6-foot-9 forward from Ridge View High School in Columbia, South Carolina, Jackson is ranked No. 6 in the ESPN 100 for 2023. He averaged 12.9 points and 9.8 rebounds on the Nike EYBL circuit last spring and summer, and he is putting up 12.1 points and 9.4 rebounds through 14 games on the circuit this season. During his junior high school season, he averaged 22.1 points and 10.9 rebounds, earning Gatorade Player of the Year honors in South Carolina. Jackson was also named MVP of the prestigious NBPA Top 100 Camp last month after averaging 14.0 points and 9.2 rebounds.
North Carolina now has one commitment in the 2023 class, No. 10-ranked prospect Simeon Wilcher.
Father of Iowa women’s basketball recruit dies after being struck by car
Trey Jones, the father of Iowa women’s basketball recruit Ava Jones, died on Thursday at the University of Louisville hospital, two days after they, along with two other members of the family, were seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle.
News of his death was made public Friday.
Ava Jones, a rising high school senior from Kansas who verbally committed to Iowa on Sunday, remains in critical condition along with her mother, Amy. Ava’s younger brother, Creek, was treated for minor injuries.
The family was in Louisville for the Run 4 The Roses girls’ basketball tournament, in which Jones was playing with her club team. They were hit when the vehicle drove onto a sidewalk. The driver who struck them, Michael Hurley, initially was charged with four counts of first-degree assault and driving under the influence. He told police he had recently taken the drug Hydrocodone.
A murder charge was added after Trey Jones’ death.
Trey Jones, 42, was a teacher and track coach at Nickerson High School in Kansas, which Ava attends. Ava, a 6-foot-2 wing player, is No. 83 on the ESPN HoopGurlz top 100 prospects list for the class of 2023. She averaged 20.8 points, 15.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists last season for Nickerson High, where she has also been on the volleyball and track teams.
Jones initially committed to Arizona State but reopened her recruiting after longtime Sun Devils coach Charli Turner Thorne retired in March. Jones announced her commitment to Iowa on social media Sunday. Because she has not signed with the Hawkeyes, the school could not comment on Jones’ condition, an Iowa spokesman told ESPN.
However, Iowa assistant coach Jan Jensen posted on Instagram on Thursday that she and head coach Lisa Bluder had visited the family in the hospital.
Jones’ club team, Southwest Elite, won the championship in its bracket on Friday, dedicating it to the Jones family.
Oregon Ducks get commitment from QB Dante Moore, No. 8 college football recruit for 2023
Five-star quarterback Dante Moore has committed to the Oregon Ducks, he announced Friday on SportsCenter.
Moore, who is ranked No. 8 overall in the 2023 ESPN 300, is the highest ranked commitment for new Ducks coach Dan Lanning and his staff. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound quarterback from Martin Luther King High School in Detroit is the No. 3 pocket-passer in the country.
“Coach Lanning is going to be a great head coach, because he knows what it takes to get to a national championship, of course being at Georgia,” Moore told ESPN. “Coach [Kenny] Dillingham as the offensive coordinator, I know I can trust in the coming years. The playmakers and the team they’re building around them will be great for me in the future.”
Despite reports of Notre Dame being the top school at one point during his recruitment, Moore continued to visit schools, including Texas A&M, LSU and Miami, to make sure he was making the best decision.
“Visiting all the schools with different facilities, different coaching staffs and meeting great coaches … and getting to talk to them is probably one of the best things to do through the whole process,” Moore told ESPN. “… There was no one I was showing favoritism to through the whole process, I was open and just enjoyed it.”
Moore, who made his final college visit to Oregon at the end of June, had already established a relationship with Dillingham, who was the offensive coordinator at Florida State prior to joining Lanning at Oregon. Moore wanted to build a better relationship with the rest of the staff and was able to do just that on his visit, as well as get a feel for the university itself.
“Getting out there and seeing the facilities, the best facilities in the country, I believe,” Moore said. “Everything is updated and [Nike founder] Phil Knight has put so much money into the university. Everything that’s at the university is going to help. People that go to Oregon get the best throughout their whole process of being there because they have every tool you need to better yourself.”
Oregon is a school many prospects are looking at for NIL deals and for networking potential beyond the college experience, and Moore understands the potential to build his brand with the Ducks.
“This whole process, many coaches and reporters know about me that, when it comes to NIL, I’m just a kid trying to play football and just better myself,” Moore said. “I know that it’s Nike and Phil Knight. Of course there can be big opportunities for NIL and build my brand. I know it’s going to be a great process, but as of now we haven’t talked anything much about that.”
The timing of Moore’s commitment comes after USC and UCLA announced they both would be leaving the Pac-12 to join the Big 10 in 2024. That leaves Oregon with questions about its future, but the uncertainty didn’t faze Moore.
“I called Coach Dillingham and asked if they were joining the Big 10, and he said they didn’t know yet,” Moore said. “Coach Lanning and all the coaches and everybody didn’t have much input on it, but if they do join them or join the Big 12 or whatever it is, I know we’ll be in a big conference for us to keep competing and be the best we could be.”
Moore has the talent and ability to come in and compete right away at Oregon. Lanning and Dillingham added Auburn transfer Bo Nix for the next two seasons. Former ESPN 300 quarterback Ty Thompson and Jay Butterfield are also on the roster.
Thompson and Butterfield don’t have much experience; Nix played for Dillingham at Auburn his freshman season.
“You can have multiple receivers on the field, multiple linemen,” Moore said. “But being quarterback, there’s only one of you on the field. You have to trust your quarterback coach and offensive coordinator to believe that they’ll be able to help you get to the league or help you improve yourself.
“They have multiple quarterbacks on the list, but I want to come in and compete, try to possibly get a starting job or getting to compete. You have to compete everywhere. Looking at the quarterback depth chart, that was a big part of this whole process.”
Moore was one of two ESPN 300 quarterbacks who had yet to make a commitment, leaving Dylan Lonergan (No. 62) as the lone uncommitted top-300 signal caller in the class.
