Astronomers Just Realized The Milky Way Is Too Big For Its Surroundings : ScienceAlert

Our home, the Milky Way, doesn’t seem particularly odd for a galaxy. Moderately-sized, spiral in shape, with a few kinks suggestive of a disruptive past.

But astronomers have just identified a quirk never before seen in any galaxy studied to date: the Milky Way is too big for its surroundings.

Specifically, it appears to be too large for the neighborhood it sits within known as the Local Sheet. This flattened arrangement of galaxies share similar velocities, bounded by relatively empty space called voids on either side.

Our Local Sheet, as an example of a ‘cosmological wall’, separates the Local Void in one direction from the Southern Void in the other.

The relationship between the galaxies in the Local Sheet seems to exert a strong influence over their behavior; for example, their similar velocities relative to the expansion of the Universe. Outside of the cosmological wall environment, these velocities would have a much wider range.

To determine the effect the environment has on the galaxies around us, a team of astronomers led by Miguel Aragón of the National Autonomous University of Mexico conducted an analysis using simulations from a project called IllustrisTNG, which models the physical Universe.

They weren’t expecting to find anything particularly out of the ordinary.

“The Milky Way is, in a way, special,” Aragón says. “Earth is very obviously special, the only home of life that we know. But it’s not the center of the Universe, or even the Solar System. And the Sun is just an ordinary star among billions in the Milky Way. Even our galaxy seemed to be just another spiral galaxy among billions of others in the observable Universe.”

But when they simulated a volume of space about a billion light-years across containing millions of galaxies, a different picture emerged: just a scant handful of galaxies as massive as the Milky Way could be located within a cosmological wall structure.

frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share” allowfullscreen>

“The Milky Way doesn’t have a particularly special mass, or type. There are lots of spiral galaxies that look roughly like it,” says astronomer Joe Silk of Sorbonne University’s Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris in France.

“But it is rare if you take into account its surroundings. If you could see the nearest dozen or so large galaxies easily in the sky, you would see that they all nearly lie on a ring, embedded in the Local Sheet. That’s a little bit special in itself. What we newly found is that other walls of galaxies in the Universe like the Local Sheet very seldom seem to have a galaxy inside them that’s as massive as the Milky Way.”

The team’s analysis didn’t take into account Andromeda, the Milky Way’s largest galactic neighbor. Also a feature of the Local Sheet – and therefore a part of the same cosmological wall – it’s a galaxy of a similar size to the Milky Way. Since having two heavyweights in a cosmological wall would be even rarer still, their conclusions still apply.

However, the research does highlight that we might need to consider our local environment when studying the Milky Way, rather than assuming that our home hangs out in an average way in an average spot in the Universe.

Because the team’s simulations only considered the Milky Way’s context within a cosmological wall, perhaps future work could account for more galaxies within the Local Group. The researchers also note that the environmental context could help explain some previously unexplained phenomena, such as the unusual arrangement of satellite galaxies around Andromeda, and the peculiar lack of them around the Milky Way.

“You do have to be careful … choosing properties that qualify as ‘special’,” says astronomer Mark Neyrinck of the Basque Foundation for Science in Spain.

“If we added a ridiculously restrictive condition on a galaxy, such as that it must contain the paper we wrote about this, we would certainly be the only galaxy in the observable Universe like that. But we think this ‘too big for its wall’ property is physically meaningful and observationally relevant enough to call out as really being special.”

The research has been published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Shakira realized ex allegedly cheated due to jam jar, referenced in music video with head in fridge: report

Shakira fans believe the singer realized her ex Gerard Piqué was cheating on her when she returned to their home from touring to find an empty jar of strawberry jam. She eats strawberry jam, but her husband and children reportedly don’t like it.

The Colombian singer also seemingly referenced the incriminating spreadable in a music video she released around the time of their split last year that showed the disembodied head of her collaborator on the song “Te Felicito” inside a refrigerator that she opens.

The jam revelation was reported by ShowNews Today, which pointed out the internet frenzy.

“The moment Shakira saw that jam bottle as she opened the fridge, she knew it was over for her,” one fan tweeted. Another said, “i found out my ex was cheating from a smoothie receipt in his car. Shakira found out from a jar of jam. I don’t care how crazy we look or sound, when something doesn’t feel right, women will always find out.”

SHAKIRA RELEASES NEW SONG THAT SEEMS TO DETAIL HER RELATIONSHIP WITH EX GERARD PIQUE: ‘I’M TOO GOOD FOR YOU’

Shakira may have shaded Gerard Piqué in her music video “Te Felicito” when she opens a fridge to find the head of song collaborator Rauw Alejandro inside. The pop star reportedly found a jar of jam in her fridge that made her suspicious Piqué had been cheating while she was away.

A rep for Shakira did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

In the video about a lying ex who was not what he seemed to be, Shakira, who sings about how she “can’t stand two-faced people,” sings, “Your wound didn’t open my skin, but it did open my eyes.” She also opens a refrigerator to find the head of her collaborator on the song, Rauw Alejandro, which some fans believe is a reference to Piqué’s jam.

In an interview with the British show “This Morning” last May, Shakira said she opened the fridge in the video “to find out the truth. So I go to the refrigerator, and it is when I find the head of Rauw Alejandro, which is pretty scary,” she laughed.

ShowNews Today reported that, in the Spanish TV show “Socialite,” it was noted that the clue was the jar of jam. That set the internet ablaze.

The pop star, 45, also renewed her shade against Piqué last week in a new hit song that refers to his new girlfriend as a budget version of Shakira and says she won’t get back with him even if he begs her.

Shakira, 45, and the Spanish soccer player, 35, separated last year after 11 years amid rumors he was cheating on her.

In “BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” a collaboration with Argentine DJ Bizarrap, Shakira sings in Spanish, “I was out of your league” and “This is for you to be mortified, to chew and swallow, swallow and chew. I won’t get back with you, not if you cry, not even if you beg me.”

She refers to herself as a “She Wolf,” a reference to her 2009 song, adding, “Women no longer cry, women get paid.”

She also swipes at Piqué’s supposed girlfriend, saying, “You traded in a Ferrari for a Twingo, You traded in a Rolex for a Casio.”

Pique reportedly shaded his wife by wearing a Casio and was seen driving a Renault Twingo after the song was released.

Shakira is also reportedly building a wall around her home to keep out Piqué’s mother, who lives near her, according to Marca. She referred to her proximity in “BZRP Music Sessions, singing, “You left me with your mom as a neighbor.”

The song has topped Spotify’s global playlist and broke a record for YouTube views of a Spanish language song since being released last week.

The former couple met in 2010 when he was in her music video for “Waka Waka,” the official song of that year’s World Cup. They split up last spring.

Skipping Meals Could Be Much Worse For You Than We Realized : ScienceAlert

In the hustle and bustle of modern existence, it can be all too easy to skip a meal or two. You might even do it deliberately. A new study suggests going without one of the standard three meals a day might have a serious downside.

In a study of 24,011 US adults over 40, only having one meal a day was linked to a higher mortality risk in general. Skipping breakfast was associated with a greater risk of dying from a cardiovascular disease (CVD), while skipping lunch or dinner was associated with a greater risk of all-cause mortality, including a rise in CVD risk.

There was even a problem for those who ate all three meals but had them too close together. Eating two adjacent meals within 4.5 hours of each other was also shown to be linked to increased all-cause death risk.

While the study seems to complicate messages that suggest intermittent fasting could be good for you, the data highlights the importance of regular refueling stops for the body.

“Our research revealed that individuals eating only one meal a day are more likely to die than those who had more daily meals,” says epidemiologist Yangbo Sun from the University of Tennessee.

“Based on these findings, we recommend eating at least two to three meals spread throughout the day.”

Around 30 percent of the study participants regularly had fewer than three meals a day. According to the data, those who were younger, male, non-Hispanic Black, with less of an education and a lower family income, were more likely to skip meals.

Meal-skipping was also more prevalent among those who smoked more, drank more alcohol, were more food insecure, who ate less nutritious food, had more snacks, and took in less energy overall.

This study isn’t comprehensive enough to determine if meal skipping actually causes earlier death, only that there’s an association worthy of further research. It’s possible that other factors are involved, affecting both eating habits and mortality risk.

That said, the research team did adjust their findings to account for variations in numerous dietary and lifestyle factors, including smoking, alcohol use, physical activity levels, energy intake, diet quality, and food insecurity – and the link was still there.

“Our findings are based on observations drawn from public data and do not imply causality,” says epidemiologist Wei Bao from the University of Iowa. “Nonetheless, what we observed makes metabolic sense.”

That “metabolic sense” refers to the way that skipping meals set at particular intervals usually leads to taking in more energy at once. This can cause imbalances in the way our bodies regulate glucose, and cause deterioration in the metabolic system.

Recent statistics suggest some 59 percent of men and some 63 percent of women in the US have three proper meals a day. That’s a large chunk of the population potentially putting themselves at risk by missing out on breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Of course, there are all sorts of reasons for this – working hours, time pressures, poverty, different dieting, and fasting approaches – but the team behind the study is hoping that it encourages further analysis of the importance of regular eating.

“Our research contributes much-needed evidence about the association between eating behaviors and mortality in the context of meal timing and duration of the daily prandial [meal] period,” says Bao.

The research has been published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

One of The Deadliest Human Diseases Is Far Older Than We Ever Realized : ScienceAlert

Smallpox has left an unmistakable mark on human history, killing at least 300 million people in the 20th century alone. In spite of its notoriety, the virus’s origins still remain elusive.

Now, a team of scientists in Italy has pushed our best estimates for the emergence of smallpox back by another 2,000 years, verifying historical sources that suggested the disease has plagued human societies since ancient times, back when pharaohs ruled.

Advances in genetic sequencing technologies have enabled researchers to undertake increasingly detailed analyses on fragments of ancient viral DNA in recent years, inching them closer to knowing where and when smallpox emerged.

Thanks to a lucky find in Lithuania in 2016, scientists traced smallpox as far back as the 1500s using viral DNA lifted from the remains of a young boy. In 2020, viral DNA from Viking Age skeletons pushed genetic evidence for the latest emergence of smallpox back another few years, to some time before 1050 CE.

However, historical records have suggested something like smallpox plagued ancient societies even earlier than this. Descriptions of symptoms resembling those of the disease have been found in 4th-century texts from China, and Egyptian mummies with pockmark scarring also suggest smallpox was circulating some 3,000 to 4,000 years ago.

But definitive genetic evidence – akin to the molecular fingerprint of a virus – to support this theory has been hard to find.

Scientists can still infer a lot about a virus’s past and its evolutionary history when they have enough samples to compare. They can see how a virus has changed over time and work out how fast or slow a virus picks up genetic mutations. From there, scientists can wind the ‘molecular clock’ back to estimate when an ancestral version of the virus likely existed.

In the case of smallpox, the disease is caused by the variola virus or VARV. In this new study, bioinformatician Diego Forni of the Scientific Institute for Research, Hospitalization and Healthcare (IRCCS) in Italy led a team into taking another look at the genetic sequences of 54 VARV samples, retrieved from previously published works or a research database.

This included four ancient VARV genomes from the Viking Age and two historic VARV genomes from the 17th and 18th centuries, along with 48 modern VARV sequences from before smallpox was eradicated in 1980.

Using this set of viral sequences, the researchers reconstructed the evolutionary history of the smallpox virus, showing how it branched out from a single common ancestor into different strains that either spread around the world, or petered out.

In their models, they adjusted for the way the rate of viral evolution appears to slow down when looking at longer time spans and speed up over shorter time periods. The most recent common ancestor of all the VARV genomes, they found, dates back to around 3,800 years ago or earlier.

Comparing the VARV sequences to those of two related orthopoxviruses – taterapox (which infects gerbils) and camelpox – the analysis also showed that the smallpox virus ancestor split off from its relatives around 7,700 years ago.

That still leaves a pretty wide window for when smallpox may have spilled over into humans, somewhere roughly between 8,000 and 4,000 years ago, the researchers say. But even so, it adds to evidence suggesting smallpox has been with us for millennia longer than previous analyses of viral DNA samples had suggested.

“Variola virus may be much, much older than we thought,” says Forni. “This is important because it confirms the historical hypothesis that smallpox existed in ancient societies.”

While these new dating estimates put smallpox in the right timeframe to match historical accounts of Egyptian pharaohs bearing smallpox scars, some skepticism remains as to whether the disease was widespread back then, as contemporary written documents contain few mentions of smallpox-like symptoms.

“A number of other infectious diseases cause a rash similar to smallpox and only the sequencing of archaeological specimens will provide information on which ancient societies were affected by the disease,” Forni and colleagues conclude in their paper.

The study was published in Microbial Genomics.
