Actor Gérard Depardieu under investigation for alleged rape and sexual assault

The complainant is a young actress who accused the actor of several rapes and sexual assaults in the summer of 2018, the sources added.

Depardieu’s lawyer, Hervé Temime, told CNN the actor disputes the allegations of wrongdoing and reminds of the presumption of innocence and that this case was initially dropped last June. The case was recently reopened by the judiciary.

In 2018, the French actor was accused of rape and sexual assault by a 22-year-old woman, prompting a “preliminary investigation” according to the Paris public prosecutor’s office.

In the French judicial system, formal investigation ensues if officials find grounds for pursuing the matter further.

Temime said in 2018 when Depardieu was first accused that his client was “shocked” by the accusation and “totally denies any assault, any rape and any criminal act.”

He added then, “I have strong elements to show that no offense took place,” and that the offense was “the opposite” of Depardieu’s personality.

The complaint was filed on August 27 and went to the Paris prosecutor on August 29.

“I regret that this investigation was not kept secret as usual,” Temime added.

Also in 2018, Temime confirmed that Depardieu knows the woman who accused him, but denied he was with her during the dates mentioned in the complaint.

Depardieu is known for his roles in films like “Green Card,” “The Man in the Iron Mask” and “Life of Pi.” He was also nominated for an Oscar in 1991 for his leading role in “Cyrano de Bergerac.”

He was granted Russian citizenship by Vladimir Putin after saying he was going to give up his French passport in protest at government plans for a tax hike on the richest.

Australia parliament rape allegations: Scott Morrison apologizes, promises probe

Morrison promised an investigation into the alleged rape and the culture inside the country’s political capital, a day after the former staff member went to the media with her story.

Brittany Higgins alleges she was raped by a former colleague in the defense minister’s office after an evening work event in March 2019.

In an interview with Australia’s Network 10 show “The Project” on Monday, Higgins said she tried to go home, but the unnamed colleague insisted they go to Parliament House in a taxi to “pick something up,” where she passed out on a couch.

She told “The Project” she woke up to find her colleague on top of her “mid-rape,” and when she repeatedly asked him to stop, he didn’t. Higgins has not publicly identified her alleged rapist.

Higgins said she spoke with the police in early April 2019, but decided against making a formal complaint amid concerns about her career prospects. “It’s just not the right decision for me personally, especially in the light of my workplace demands,” she wrote, according to Australia’s news.com.au. Police in Canberra confirmed to Reuters they had spoken to a complainant in April 2019, but she chose not to make a formal complaint.

After Higgins told senior staff in Reynolds’ office of the alleged attack, she said in the interview that she was then asked to attend a meeting in the office where she says she was assaulted.

Defense Minister Linda Reynolds told Parliament on Monday that she didn’t know the substance of the allegations when she called the meeting with her staff member, and “had I known, I would have conducted the meeting elsewhere.”

Morrison on Tuesday apologized to Higgins and promised an investigation. The Prime Minister said that the alleged perpetrator was “quite swiftly” fired for breaching security by entering Parliament House on the night of the alleged rape.

“That should not have happened, and I do apologize,” Morrison told reporters in Canberra. “I want to make sure any young woman working in this place is as safe as possible.”

According to Morrison, Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet official Stephanie Foster will investigate how workplace complaints in Parliament are dealt with. There will also be a separate probe into workplace culture.

In a statement to CNN, Higgins said that she had come forward “because I didn’t want what happened to me, to happen to anyone else.”

While she thanked Morrison for his apology, Higgins said the Prime Minister’s announcement of an investigation into Parliament House culture was “long overdue.”

“It should not have taken my story, or the story of other victim-survivors to air on national television for the Prime Minister — or any Member of Parliament — to take action on workplace sexual harassment, assault or bullying,” she said in the statement.

Higgins’ allegations are the latest in a series of accusations made by female members of the governing Liberal Party, which have put pressure of Morrison to take steps to improve the government’s workplace culture.

Last year, a former Liberal Party staff member accused then-immigration minister Alan Tudge of improper behavior, which he denies.

In her statement, Higgins called for Parliament to establish an independent reporting mechanism through which complaints could be made confidentially.

“Finally, everyone should feel safe to report sexual assault without fear of losing their job. These incidents shouldn’t have to play out in the media for change to happen,” she said.

BBC banned in China after explosive report on Uighur rape and the UK blocking its state-run network

The Chinese government is banning BBC News from landing in its country after the British outlet published an explosive story on alleged torture and rape occurring in Uighur concentration camps.

The decision comes one week after Ofcom, the media regulator of the United Kingdom had nixed a license for the state run China Global Television Network (CGTN) to air in the U.K.

A Thursday statement from China’s National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) accused the BBC of not meeting the government’s standards for reporting — including that it allegedly undermined China’s national unity.

“After investigation, the relevant content of BBC World News’s China-related reports seriously violated the relevant provisions of the ‘Regulations on the Administration of Radio and Television’ and the ‘Administrative Measures for the Landing of Overseas Satellite TV Channels,’ violated the requirements that news should be truthful and fair, harmed China’s national interests and undermined China’s national unity,” the NRTA said in the statement.

The authority went on to state that the BBC does not meet its standards of “foreign channels in China, the State Administration of Radio and Television does not allow BBC World News to continue to land in China, and will not accept its application for landing in the new year.”

‘CREDIBLE CASE’ CHINA IS CARRYING OUT GENOCIDE AGAINST UIGHURS: LEGAL OPINION

The BBC said it was “disappointed” in the move while British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab blasted the decision as “an unacceptable curtailing of media freedom,” according to Reuters.

However, the BBC has never been allowed to broadcast in mainland China or directly into most Chinese homes. It is mostly available via satellite in international hotels and the homes of some foreigners and upper echelon citizens.

The BBC’s report on the Uighurs included alleged former detainees who claimed horrific abuses like raping women with electrocuting instruments, as well as forcing others to watch a woman being raped.

The U.S. State Department responded by saying it was “deeply disturbed by reports, including firsthand testimony, of systematic rape and sexual abuse against women in internment camps for ethnic Uighurs and other Muslims in Xinjiang.”

The nature of China’s repressive security apparatus makes it difficult to report on the workings of the mass detention camps in Xinjiang.

Reported former detainees have come forward describing, among other things, forced sterilization and abortions on Uyghur women.

At the end of former President Trump’s administration, the State Department formally accused China of genocide.
