Eminem and Spider-Man have a rap battle on Amazing Spider-Man #1 variant cover

Hip-hop superstar and recent Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Eminem is coming back to Marvel Comics for an Amazing Spider-Man #1 variant cover which pits Eminem against Spider-Man himself in an image that pays homage to the climactic rap battle scene of Eminem’s 2002 biopic film 8 Mile, with Marvel characters like Miles Morales, Ghost-Spider, Daredevil, and Luke Cage in the audience.

“HONORED to be on the official variant of The Amazing Spider-Man (2022),” tweeted the official Eminem Twitter account (opens in new tab) on November 21, along with an announcement that the variant will go on sale Tuesday, November 22 through Eminem’s website.

The new variant is for Amazing Spider-Man #1 (Legacy #895) which was released in April and is illustrated by Salvador Larroca and Edgar Delgado.

Eminem is the second hip hop legend to appear on a Marvel Comics cover this month. Christopher “Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace appeared on a variant cover to Deadpool #1, created in association with hustl., who is also working with Marvel for the Eminem cover.

5,000 print copies are available for purchase on TheHaul.com (opens in new tab) and an additional 1,000 limited print run of the spotlight version of the variant comic cover will go on sale Tuesday, November 29.

“I’ve always been a huge Spider-Man fan since I was a kid,” Eminem says in Marvel’s official announcement. “He’s definitely in my top 5… So being on a cover battling Spider-Man is such a thrill and an honor.”

Eminem, oddly enough, is no stranger to Marvel Comics.

Way back in 2009, he co-starred alongside Frank Castle in Eminem/Punisher #1, in which Punisher teams up with Eminem to take on terrorists who interrupt one of his concerts. That comic was also drawn by Salvador Larroca. Additionally, Eminem provided theme songs for Sony’s 2018 Venom film and its 2021 sequel Let There Be Carnage.

Stay up to date on all the new Spider-Man comics Marvel has planned for release in 2022 and 2023.

Takeoff, member of rap group Migos, fatally shot outside private party in Houston, police say

CNN
 —

Takeoff, who was one-third of the platinum-selling rap group Migos, was shot and killed early Tuesday in Houston, Texas, authorities said. He was 28.

Police received a call of a shooting in progress around 2:34 a.m. local time, Houston Police Department Chief Troy Finner said at a news conference Tuesday. Officers arrived to the 810 Billiards & Bowling Houston where there was a private party and found a dead man at the scene.

Two other people – a 23-year-old man and 24-year-old woman – were also injured in the shooting and took themselves to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, said Sgt. Michael Arrington with police department’s homicide division.

Employees told police an argument took place after the party ended when a large group of people gathered at the front door area outside of the building, which led to the shooting. At least 40 people were at the scene at the time of the shooting, Finner said.

“A lot of people that were there fled the scene and did not stick around to give a statement,” Arrington said.

Finner identified the deceased man as Kirshnik Khari Ball, also known as Takeoff of the rap group Migos.

“I got many calls from Houston and outside of Houston, and everyone spoke of what a great young man he is, how peaceful he is, what a great artist (he is),” Finner said, later adding that Takeoff was very well respected and nonviolent.

“I would not expect him to be involved … We have no reason to believe that he was involved in anything criminal at the time,” Finner said.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said they have met with Takeoff’s mother.

“It doesn’t matter how famous you are. You may not be famous at all,” Turner said. “Anybody who loses his or her life is a life lost, and there are family members and friends who are grieving as a result.”

The news of Takeoff’s death was a blow to the hip-hop community, still recovering from the fatal shooting of rapper PnB Rock in September. Stars took to social media Tuesday to pay tribute and express their condolences over the death of Takeoff.

Gucci Mane, who recently collaborated with Takeoff on the track “Us vs. Them,” wrote on Instagram, “This broke my heart” upon learning the news.

“This is horrible. From the tragedy of the death to the tragedy of there being a video of it online,” actress Keke Palmer shared on Instagram, referring to a video that appears to show the deceased rapper in the moments after he was shot. “It’s all just tragic and I am so sorry to his whole family and all he touched. Really terrible.”

Rapper Ja Rule aired his grievances about Takeoff’s violent death on Twitter, writing, “this sh*t has to STOP … sending love to friends and family.”

The Atlanta Falcons also released a statement on Twitter.

“Takeoff’s legacy lives on in Atlanta and across the world,” the team tweeted.

Born in Lawrenceville, Georgia, Takeoff began performing with his uncle and fellow rapper Quavo, along with Offset, as Migos in 2008. The trio found fame with their 2013 single, “Versace.”

Their success only increased in 2016 with the release of their hit “Bad and Boujee,” which featured fellow recording artist Lil Uzi Vert.

The single quickly became an internet sensation, giving birth to a multitude of memes that played off the lyrics “rain drop, drop top.”

The song got an even bigger boost after “Atlanta” creator and star Donald Glover name-dropped the single during an acceptance speech at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards.

“I really wanna thank the Migos, not for being in the show, but for making ‘Bad and Boujee,’” Glover said at the time. “Like that’s the best song ever.”

Takeoff and Quavo recently formed the duo “Unc & Phew” and released their debut album, “Only Built for Infinity Links,” on October 7.

The music video for their song “Messy” was released on Monday.

During a recent conversation on the podcast “Drink Champs” just days before his death, Takeoff accepted accolades for his stellar performance on the new project.

“It’s time to pop it, you know what I mean? It’s time to give me my flowers, you know what I mean?, Takeoff said. “I don’t want them later on when I ain’t here.”

Nicki Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl” Kicked Out of Grammy Rap Category – The Hollywood Reporter

Nicki Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl” is spending its eighth week on top of Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart, but at the Grammys, the song will compete in the pop category.

Minaj originally submitted the track — which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in August — to the rap categories at the Grammys, but the decision was overturned by the Recording Academy’s rap committee, according to a source. That group determined that Minaj’s playful and pop-sounding song sampling Rick James’ 1981 classic “Super Freak” should compete for best pop solo performance instead of rap awards.

Minaj criticized the decision on social media Thursday in an Instagram video post and a series of tweets. “They stay moving the goalposts when it comes to me,” Minaj said on IG about the academy. “Why is the goalpost only ever moved when it’s Nicki?’

Minaj also said if “Super Freaky Girl” must compete in pop, so should Latto’s “Big Energy,” which is pop-leaning and samples Tom Tom Club’s 1981 song “Genius of Love,” famously sampled by Mariah Carey for the No. 1 hit “Fantasy.”

“I have no prob being moved out the RAP category as long as we r ALL being treated FAIRLY,” she tweeted. “If SFG (Super Freaky Girl) has 2B moved out RAP then so does Big Energy! ANY1 who says diff is simply a Nicki hater or a troll.”

Latto’s “Big Energy” spent two weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s rap chart and peaked at No. 3 on the all-genre Hot 100 chart. At the Grammys, “Big Energy” will compete for rap Grammys, not pop.

A representative for The Recording Academy did not reply to an email seeking comment.

Nominees for the 2023 Grammys will be announced on Nov. 15, and the live telecast will air on Feb. 5, 2023, on CBS. Voting for the first round of nominees begins Thursday and ends on Oct. 23.

Minaj has released a number of pop and hip-hop hits throughout the years that feature her rapping or singing — sometimes both on the same track. Her debut solo single, 2010’s “Your Love,” was pop-adjacent with its sample of Annie Lennox’s 1995 cover version of “No More I Love You’s,” and Minaj has released other pop-heavy songs like “Super Bass” and “Starships,” which Hot 97 radio host Peter Rosenberg famously dubbed “not real hip-hop” and caused Minaj to pull out of the station’s annual Summer Jam concert.

But of Minaj’s 10 Grammy nominations, she’s only competed in pop once — for best pop duo/group performance with “Bang Bang” alongside Ariana Grande and Jessie J. The majority of her Grammy nominations have been in rap, including best rap album for Pink Friday and The Pinkprint, best rap song for “Anaconda” and best rap performance for “Moment 4 Life” and “Truffle Butter.”

“Super Freaky Girl” is in similar company to Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts”: The singer-rapper’s breakthrough track topped Billboard’s rap chart for 13 weeks and eventually led the all-genre Hot 100 chart for seven weeks, but it didn’t compete in the rap categories at the Grammys. Instead, it was nominated — and won — best pop solo performance at the 2020 show.

Other songs that feature rap elements that have competed for best pop solo performance include Doja Cat’s “Say So,” which includes her singing and rapping, and Post Malone’s “Better Now,” which meshes hip-hop, alternative and pop sounds.

Collaborative songs that topped Billboard’s rap chart but competed for best pop duo/group performance at the Grammys include Iggy Azalea and Charli XCX’s “Fancy,” Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s “See You Again” and Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus’ “Old Town Road,” which won the honor in 2020.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were originally kicked out of the rap Grammys when the duo had a breakthrough with the hits “Thrift Shop” and “Can’t Hold Us” at the 2014 show. But that decision was later overturned — and heavily criticized — when the group swept the rap Grammys, besting Kendrick Lamar and others — a decision even Macklemore denounced. As a result, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis didn’t submit their sophomore album for Grammy contention at the 2017 show.

The man suspected of fatally shooting an innocent dad visiting his kid at upstate Marist College has a lengthy criminal record and was denied bail Monday.

Roy Johnson was charged with second-degree murder in Sunday’s slaying, in which the unidentified father was shot dead during an apparent fight over coffee in the lobby of a Poughkeepsie Courtyard by Marriott hotel.

Johnson was ordered held without bail because of the severity of the case — and two existing felonies, police said Monday at a press conference.

The suspect’s alleged partner in crime, Devin Taylor, also was charged with two counts of criminal weapons possession in the second degree. Taylor’s bail was set at $500,000 cash or a $1 million bond.

Cops have also kept quiet on the identity of the slain innocent victim, who they said was an innocent bystander amid the bloody mayhem and whose family has asked for privacy.

Both suspects in the case were already known to law enforcement because of past run-ins, authorities said.

Officials said they would not be releasing further information about the two suspects’ alleged criminal past.
