Japanese yen weakens as Bank of Japan makes no changes to yield curve range

The Japanese currency weakened against the U.S. dollar after the Bank of Japan surprised markets by keeping its yield curve tolerance band unchanged.

The Japanese yen weakened 2.6% against the U.S. dollar after the decision was announced and last stood at 131.47, hovering at its strongest levels since June, 2022.

“Japan’s economy is projected to continue growing at a pace above its potential growth rate,” the Bank of Japan said in a statement. The central bank left its interest rate unchanged at an ultra-dovish -0.1% – in line with expectations and maintaining the same rate it’s kept since 2016.

The decision to make no changes to its monetary policies comes after the central bank caught global markets off guard in its previous meeting by widening its tolerance range for the yield on its 10-year government bond from 25 basis points to 50 basis points in December.

Since the move last month, 10-year JGB yields have exceeded the upper ceiling several times.

The yield on the 10-year JGB exceeded the upper ceiling of its band for a fifth straight session on Wednesday morning before dropping to 0.385%.

‘Knee-jerk’ reaction

Nomura head of FX strategy Yujiro Goto said while the move would be a disappointing one for traders bullish on the Japanese yen, the weakening of the currency may be temporary.

“I think the initial reaction [for the yen reaching] 130 to 131, or potentially 132 is a knee-jerk reaction after the ‘no change’ today,” he said on CNBC’s “Street Signs Asia.”

“In the medium term, over the next 2-3 months, I think the trend for the yen should be still on the downside towards 125, even after the disappointment today,” he said,

Goto said the currency will strengthen on hopes of a policy shift in the near-term future, highlighting the nearing end of BOJ Governor Haruhiko Kuroda’s term.

“Markets should keep expecting [the BOJ] to tweak or change [its] monetary policy after some point, especially after Kuroda’s retirement,” he said.

Shigeto Nagai of Oxford Economics said the BOJ’s move to widen its band “fueled” expectations for more changes ahead.

“Today, the BOJ really wanted to calm down that speculation and anticipation for normalization,” he said, adding the central bank will continue to be pressed for change.

More pressure ahead

As inflation continues to rise in Japan, the central bank will face further pressure ahead of its leadership change.

“Inflation in Japan is doing something that it hasn’t done for 40 years,” Viraj Patel of Vanda Research said in a tweet, adding that the Bank of Japan risks “falling into” the same trap as the U.S. Federal Reserve in labeling inflation as “transitory.”

The Bank of Japan used wording that was similar to the Fed’s description of inflation before the U.S. central bank began continuously hiking rates to tame rising prices, describing it as “pass-through.”

“The year-on-year rate of increase in the consumer price index is likely to be relatively high in the short run due to the effects of a pass-through to consumer prices of cost increases led by a rise in import prices,” the central bank said in its latest statement.

The Bank of Japan revised its forecasts for 2023’s core inflation nationwide from 2.9% to 3%. Nationwide inflation data is expected Friday.

New images show all the color options for the Galaxy S23 range

The Galaxy S22 series comes in a multitude of colors but rumors have said we won’t be as spoiled for choice this year as the Galaxy S23 range will be available in just four colors and new official-looking photos seem to confirm that leak.

White, Pink Gold, Sky Blue, Burgundy, and Red are just some of the color options for the S22 series but that’s not necessarily a good thing as too many options can unnecessarily complicate a purchase decision. And most of us slap cases on our phones anyway, so hues don’t matter all that much at the end of the day.

Leaker SnoopyTech, who is known for retail leaks, has posted some Galaxy S23 photos that presumably showcase all the color options. Reliable leaker Ross Young revealed back in October that the Galaxy S23 would come in black, beige, green, and light pink and a few days back, budding tipster Ahmed Qwaider said that they would be available in black, cream, green, and lavender.

So, in very simple, basic words, the phones were rumored to come in black, a whitish colorway, a hue close to pink and purple, and green (sorry color nerds).

Per SnoopyTech and a Korean site, the marketing names for the colors are Phantom Black, Cotton Flower, Misty Lilac, and Botanic Green. Phantom Black and Botanic Green have a formal vibe to them while Cotton Flower and Misty Lilac are fun, laid back hues.
Moving on, these images are more proof that all the handsets will have a floating camera setup and the Galaxy S23 Ultra will retain the boxy look of its predecessor, which happens to be one of the best phones around, whereas the Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus will have rounded corners.

Nvidia unveils a broad range of efficient new laptop GPUs, from RTX 4050 to 4090

Enlarge / Nvidia says that an unnamed RTX 4000-series GPU can perform like an RTX 3070 while consuming power like an RTX 3050.

Nvidia

In addition to un-unlaunching the RTX 4070 Ti GPU for desktops at CES today, Nvidia announced a new range of RTX 4000-series laptop GPUs. Nvidia claims the new GPUs will provide big performance and power efficiency boosts, particularly for the lower-end GPUs that ship in the gaming laptops that most people buy.

The RTX 4000-series laptop GPUs use the same Ada Lovelace architecture as the desktop parts and will come with the same architectural benefits: DLSS 3 support, hardware-accelerated AV1 video encoding, and a more efficient manufacturing process that Nvidia is leaning on to improve power efficiency. (Nvidia didn’t specify in its presentation, but presumably it’s the same customized 5nm TSMC process used for the desktop Lovelace cards).

We don’t have precise specs for any of the GPUs, and most of Nvidia’s performance comparisons were pretty abstract. We know there will be 4050-, 4060-, 4070-, 4080-, and (for the first time in laptops) 4090-class GPUs. We also assume that manufacturers can set specific power targets for each GPU, providing better performance in designs that can handle it while tuning for power efficiency in thinner and lighter laptops. We know that each GPU will continue to use “ultra-low voltage” GDDR6 memory rather than GDDR6X, the same as the previous-generation RTX 3000-series laptop GPUs.

We also know that an unnamed Lovelace GPU (presumably the 4090) can beat an unnamed Ampere GPU (presumably the RTX 3080 Ti) in all games by various amounts. These abstract performance comparisons are made more difficult because Nvidia-provided performance charts normally also turn on DLSS and other features, making it more difficult to determine how the GPUs stack up relative to each other in games and apps that don’t support those features.

Enlarge / This series of dots compares an unnamed Lovelace laptop GPU to an unnamed Ampere GPU.

Nvidia

But the most concrete chart compared an unnamed Lovelace GPU to the RTX 3050 and RTX 3070, showing that the Lovelace GPU (almost certainly the RTX 4050) could perform at the same level as the RTX 3070 while consuming just 40 W instead of 120 W. RTX 3050 GPUs have been popular in thin-and-light designs like the Dell XPS 15 and Surface Laptop Studio, and bringing RTX 3070-level performance to those laptops without requiring RTX 3070-level heat, fan noise, or cooling capacity is a big deal.

Nvidia only releases a new range of mobile GPUs every other year or so, meaning that the RTX 4000 series will likely be the chips powering gaming laptops and mobile workstations from this year until sometime in 2025. RTX 4000-series laptop GPUs will be available starting on February 8 (for the 4080 and 4090) and February 22 (for the other GPUs), though it will presumably take them much longer to fully replace the entrenched 3000-series in most laptops. Pricing will vary, but they will “start at $999.”

South Korea fines Tesla $2.2 mln for exaggerating driving range of EVs

SEOUL, Jan 3 (Reuters) – South Korea’s antitrust regulator said it would impose a 2.85 billion won ($2.2 million) fine on Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) for failing to tell its customers about the shorter driving range of its electric vehicles (EVs) in low temperatures.

The Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) said that Tesla had exaggerated the “driving ranges of its cars on a single charge, their fuel cost-effectiveness compared to gasoline vehicles as well as the performance of its Superchargers” on its official local website since August 2019 until recently.

The driving range of the U.S. EV manufacturer’s cars plunge in cold weather by up to 50.5% versus how they are advertised online, the KFTC said in a statement on Tuesday.

Tesla could not be immediately reached for comment.

On its website, Tesla provides winter driving tips, such as pre-conditioning vehicles with external power sources, and using its updated Energy app to monitor energy consumption, but does not mention the loss of driving range in sub-zero temperatures.

In 2021, Citizens United for Consumer Sovereignty, a South Korean consumer group, said the driving range of most EVs drop by up to 40% in cold temperatures when batteries need to be heated, with Tesla suffering the most, citing data from the country’s environment ministry.

Last year, the KFTC fined German carmaker Mercedes-Benz and its Korean unit 20.2 billion won for false advertising tied to gas emissions of its diesel passenger vehicles.

The challenge for electric vehicle performance in extreme temperatures is widely known, though EVs are popular in markets like Norway, where four out of five vehicles sold last year were battery-powered, led by Tesla.

A 2020 study of 4,200 connected EVs of all makes by Canada-based telematics provider Geotab found that most models had a similar drop in range in cold weather, primarily because the battery is also used to heat the car for the driver and passengers.

At just above 20 degrees Celsius, the average EV outperformed its stated range, but at minus 15 degrees the average EV had only 54% of its rated range, the study found.
