Raiders Looking To Trade Rodney Hudson

Yesterday, we heard the Raiders were cutting Pro Bowl center Rodney Hudson. Not so fast. Las Vegas is actually try to move Hudson via trade first, a source told Josina Anderson (Twitter link).

In a follow-up tweet, Anderson notes that there are talks of a trade involving a “second day pick.” A Day 2 pick would be a pretty nice haul for a player they were about to cut. This has been a trend in the NFL recently, for reports to leak that a player was getting cut only for the team to try to trade him at the last minute, sometimes successfully sometimes not. It was reported the Saints were going to cut defensive tackle Malcom Brown, and then they traded him to the Jags yesterday.

The Dolphins were set to cut Kyle Van Noy, then tried to trade him, only to ultimately release him after finding no takers. Whether Hudson is traded or released, it still represents a dramatic overhaul of the Raiders’ offensive line. This move follows Las Vegas’ cuts of Gabe Jackson and Richie Incognito and its trade of Trent Brown to New England.

Hudson, 31, graded as Pro Football Focus’ No. 8 overall center last season. The Raiders signed him to a three-year, $33.75MM extension in 2019. In six seasons with the team, he’s missed only four total games.

The Florida State product and former Kansas City Chief has made the Pro Bowl in three of the last five seasons and was a second-team All-Pro in 2019.

Raiders will release Rodney Hudson as Jon Gruden moves on to Plan C – The Athletic

Well, the Raiders are officially on to Plan C.

The decision Tuesday to cut center Rodney Hudson — not officially, but it’s a done deal, according to sources — signals a stark change in the team’s philosophy as it shifts from building around an expensive, veteran offensive line to spreading out the assets over the whole roster.

While the timing and speed with which the move came down was surprising, there were definitely warning signs. The trade of right tackle Trent Brown, the hard-line stance with guard Gabe Jackson, cutting Richie Incognito … and there have been loud whispers for a while about Hudson’s frustration with the Raiders only having one winning season in his six with them.

Raiders sign Pro Bowl DE Yannick Ngakoue

After nearly trading for him multiple times over the last few years, the Raiders have finally acquired Yannick Ngakoue. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Raiders expected to sign the veteran pass rusher to a big deal during free agency.

Ngakoue has been one of the league’s most productive pass rushers over the last four seasons, totaling 45.5 sacks for three different teams. The best season of his career came in 2017 when he totaled 12 sacks and six forced fumbles with the Jaguars.

He will now start at defensive end for the Raiders with likely Maxx Crosby and Clelin Ferrell competing for the other starting spot. The team has finally added a proven pass-rusher to pair with their young picks from the 2019 draft.

At just 25-years old, Ngakoue is still in the prime of his career and he played his best football under Gus Bradley in Jacksonville. Needless to say, this is a huge move by Mike Mayock and Jon Gruden as they look to fix their pass rush.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, it’s a two-year deal for Ngakoue worth up to $26 million. While the exact terms of the deal are not yet known, that appears to be a steal for a Pro Bowl-level edge rusher.

Raiders OT Trent Brown expected to be traded to Patriots

The Patriots are making a big splash in advance of free agency, bringing back a familiar face to do it.

New England is expected to trade for Raiders offensive tackle Trent Brown, sources say, with the two sides coming together on a deal that was a few weeks in the making.

Brown has reworked his deal, agreeing to a new one-year contract as part of the agreement, per sources, allowing him to be a free agent after the 2021 season. Previously, he had two years and 19.25 million left on his Las Vegas contract.

The compensation going to Las Vegas is not yet clear.

Brown, 27, returns to coach Bill Belichick and the Patriots to reignite his career that reached its greatest heights in 2018 — his only season in New England.

After he was traded from the 49ers, he started every game for the Patriots, won a Super Bowl, and was good enough to earn a four-year, $66 million contract from the Raiders.

After a Pro Bowl season in 2019 as a right tackle, Brown had a more trying 2020. He played in just five games, spent some time on the reserve/COVID-19 list and most notably was hospitalized after a mishap with a pre-game IV that caused air to enter his bloodstream.

In his end-of-season news conference, Raiders general manager Mike Mayock said of Brown, “When he’s healthy, he’s dominant. And you’ve got to juxtapose that with his inability to play, week to week, over a two-year period. We’ve got to get a more consistent player. We think he’s the best right tackle in the league when healthy.”

That’s what the Patriots believe they are getting.

Report: Raiders plan to release Tyrell Williams

Getty Images

Wide receiver Tyrell Williams didn’t play any games for the Raiders during the 2020 season and it looks like he won’t be playing any for them in 2021 either.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that the Raiders plan to release at the start of the new league year. That plan would presumably change if another team made an overwhelming trade offer, although that seems unlikely since he’s set to make $11.5 million coming off of shoulder surgery.

Per Pelissero, Williams is expected to be fully healthy ahead of the start of the league year.

Williams signed a four-year deal with the Raiders before the 2019 season. He had 42 catches for 651 yards and six touchdowns during his first season with the team.

Former Raiders, Seattle Seahawks coach Tom Flores elected to Pro Football Hall of Fame, source says

Former Raiders and Seattle Seahawks coach Tom Flores has been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2021, a source told ESPN’s Paul Gutierrez.

Flores was the lone finalist in the coach category for the Class of 2021.

Flores won Super Bowl rings as a player, assistant coach and head coach to go with an AFL championship as a player.

Flores and Hall of Famer Mike Ditka are the only people in NFL history who have been Super Bowl winners as players, assistant coaches and head coaches. His nine seasons as the Raiders’ coach included two Super Bowl victories, an 8-3 postseason record and a .727 playoff winning percentage, which ranks behind only Vince Lombardi.

The full Class of 2021, which will be unveiled Saturday night on CBS, was chosen Jan. 19 by the Hall’s board of selectors during a virtual meeting. The new Hall of Famers will be enshrined during a multiday event Aug. 5-9 in Canton, Ohio. The extended enshrinement weekend will also include ceremonies for the Hall’s Class of 2020, as well as the Centennial class of Hall of Famers selected as part of the league’s 100th anniversary. Both were canceled last year because of COVID-19 restrictions.

The Hall’s Class of 2020 includes Steve Atwater, Isaac Bruce, Steve Hutchinson, Edgerrin James and Troy Polamalu. The Centennial class includes Harold Carmichael, Jim Covert, Bill Cowher, Bobby Dillon, Cliff Harris, Winston Hill, Jimmy Johnson, Alex Karras, Steve Sabol, Donnie Shell, Duke Slater, Mac Speedie, Ed Sprinkle, Paul Tagliabue and George Young.
