2022 U.S. Open leaderboard breakdown: Collin Morikawa, Jon Rahm soar to the top as Rory McIlroy holds

History was always going to be made this week in Brookline, Massachusetts. That was inevitable. However, the Boston faithful could not have envisioned a better leaderboard heading into the weekend at the 2022 U.S. Open. While defending champion Jon Rahm and four-time major winner Rory McIlroy are firmly in contention sitting just one stroke off the lead, it is the name at the top which has the potential to produce a truly jaw-dropping moment come Sunday.

That name belongs to Collin Morikawa, who fired a 4-under 66 on Friday to reach 5 under for the championship and command the co-lead alongside Joel Dahmen. The 25-year-old Morikawa has seemingly been on television for the last decade, but in reality, this week’s U.S. Open marks only the 11th major championship appearance of his career.

In his 10 prior such starts, Morikawa captured startling milestones including a win in his PGA Championship debut and another in his Open Championship debut last summer at Royal St. George’s. A once-in-a-lifetime start to a career can be made even more memorable with a victory at The Country Club.

Three major wins in 11 starts would be unprecedented given the talent depth in the game of golf — for reference: Jordan Spieth needed 19 outings to get his three — and the ability to win those majors in three completely different settings would make it all the more impressive feat. Make no mistake, though: Morikawa is in for a battle over the final 36 holes with names like McIlroy, Rahm and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler all within shouting distance.

While this instance would not be like his last two triumphs as Morikawa has yet to command a 36-hole lead in his major career — add that to his list of accomplishments — and some may continue to doubt his putting or his inexplicable lack of confidence in his iron play, history suggests Morikawa will be just fine.

T1. Collin Morikawa and Joel Dahmen (-5): Last year, Morikawa couldn’t figure out the turf in Scotland. He went on to win The Open Championship. This year, he is unable to hit his patented fade with his irons. Lo and behold, he is right in the mix for his third major title. Not only would he continue his incredible pace on golf’s biggest stage, but with a win, Morikawa would be a Masters victory away from completing the career grand slam. While the irons have been good, not great, he has made his mark with his performance on the greens. He had lost strokes with his putter in every start since the Masters, and so far this week at The Country Club, he has gained more than three strokes with the flat stick.

T3. Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, Aaron Wise, Hayden Buckley and Beau Hossler (-4): Rahm played alongside Morikawa the first two days and was probably overshadowed by him. Still, the defending champion is in an enviable position and has a fantastic chance to follow in the footsteps of Brooks Koepka by winning back-to-back U.S. Opens. It is no surprise that Rahm is leading the field in strokes gained off the tee as he is the best in the world in that department by a considerable margin; however, the improvement he has shown around the green this week has the potential to propel him to another major triumph.

T8. Scottie Scheffler, Nick Hardy, Matthew NeSmith, Patrick Rodgers and Brian Harman (-3): Carrying the momentum of his birdie-birdie finish from Thursday, Scheffler sure looked like the world No. 1 on Friday. While it did not begin without a hitch, the Texan put together the best approach performance of his career from a strokes gained perspective. Ultimately signing for a 3-under 67, Scheffler will be in the conversation come the back nine on Sunday as long as his short game is able to mirror his baseline statistical output the rest of the way. He currently ranks first in strokes gained approach, third in strokes gained tee to green and sixth in strokes gained off the tee, and he’s outside the top 80 both on and around the green.

T13. Sam Burns, Matt Fitzpatrick, Adam Hadwin and Beau Hossler (-2): Burns was one of three players to sign for a 67 in the morning wave, and the next logical step in his career progression is weekend contention in a major championship. He can check that off the list as he is firmly in the mix of this championship and should love his chances moving forward. A three-time winner on the PGA Tour this season, a victory this week would pull him alongside his good friend Scheffler on the yearly total. The LSU product has only hit 15 fairways through the first two rounds, so he will likely need to improve in this department in order to set up more scoring opportunities.

T16. Xander Schauffele, Will Zalatoris, Davis Riley and four others (-1): His U.S. Open resume is fantastic on paper, but this presents the best opportunity to date for Schauffele. In his five prior top-10 finishes, he had yet to truly contend; however, with 36 holes remaining, he is only four strokes off the pace. The names that he will need to leapfrog are some of the biggest in the game, but if there was ever a single instance in which he could shed the doubt and reputation surrounding his name, it is this week.

T24. Brooks Koepka, Hideki Matsuyama, Brandon Matthews and four others (E): Really impressive bounce back round for the two-time U.S. Open champion as he now has rounds of 73-67 under his belt. Koepka was his typical self with the media after his second round as the chip on his shoulder has somehow grown ten-fold. Only four men have beaten him in his last four U.S. Open appearances and he has his work cut out for him if he doesn’t want to add substantially to that total. An improvement around the green would be huge given it is the only area of his game which has held him back through 36 holes.

T31. Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Joaquin Niemann and six others (+1): I can only imagine how frustrated Thomas is after opening his second round with a double bogey and ultimately signing for a 2-over 72. At The Players Championship, PGA Championship and now the U.S. Open, the two-time major winner has received the short end of the stick when it comes to the weather bias in some of the biggest events of the season. He is only six strokes off the lead, and given the firepower in his arsenal, he is still in this thing, although there is now little room for mistake.

Senate confirms Rahm Emanuel and others to ambassador posts

Rahm Emanuel, the former mayor of Chicago and White House chief of staff for President Barack Obama, was confirmed early Saturday as the US ambassador to Japan. The vote was 48-21, with 31 senators not voting.
Progressive Democrats had objected to Emanuel’s nomination, citing his record as Chicago mayor, specifically his handling of the 2014 police shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. Three Democratic senators — Elizabeth Warren, Ed Markey and Jeff Merkley — voted against Emanuel’s confirmation.
Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz had for months refused to allow quick confirmation on diplomatic nominations to protest the Biden administration’s policy on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. Cruz wants the administration to toughen its policy on the major pipeline that will deliver natural gas from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea, arguing that the pipeline would strengthen Russia and make Germany beholden to the country. Some Republican senators, however, had expressed concern that the hold up on the nominations would impact America’s diplomacy and influence around the world.

Early Saturday morning, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, announced a deal that Cruz’s legislation imposing sanctions would be debated and voted on by mid-January.

Emanuel and others’ confirmation votes were part of a flurry of activity in the Senate in the early hours of Saturday morning before lawmakers adjourned for recess.

The Senate confirmed several nominees to other key posts in Asia and Africa, including Marc Evans Knapper as the ambassador to Vietnam; Larry Edward André Jr. as the ambassador to Somalia; Steven C. Bondy as the ambassador to Bahrain; and Christopher John Lamora as the ambassador to Cameroon.
Mark Gitenstein, a close friend to Biden who served as chief counsel on the Senate Judiciary Committee when Biden chaired the panel, was confirmed as the ambassador to the European Union.
Julissa Reynoso Pantaleón, who most recently served as first lady Jill Biden’s chief of staff in the East Wing, was confirmed as the ambassador to Spain.
The Senate also confirmed Mary Katherine Dimke to be US District Judge for the Eastern District of Washington. Gabriel P. Sanchez, a nominee to be US Circuit Judge for the Ninth Circuit, and Holly A. Thomas, a nominee to be a US Circuit Judge for the Ninth Circuit, had their nominations advanced.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported the status of Gabriel Sanchez’ and Holly Thomas’ nominations. They have not yet been voted on.

Biden nominee Rahm Emanuel defends handling of Laquan McDonald case under Squad criticism

President Biden’s pick for U.S. ambassador to Japan, Rahm Emanuel, explained his handling of the case of the 2014 death of Laquan McDonald when he was mayor of Chicago, after being asked to do so at his confirmation hearing on Wednesday.

Figures on the left, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., have opposed Emanuel’s nomination due to accusations that he was involved in an attempted cover-up of the nature of McDonald’s death, which occurred after he was shot 16 times by now-former police officer Jason Van Dyke.

BIDEN NOMINATES FORMER CHICAGO MAYOR RAHM EMANUEL AS AMBASSADOR TO JAPAN

“I said then, I’m the mayor and I’m responsible and accountable for fixing this so this never happens again,” Emanuel said when discussing the matter. “To be honest there’s not a day or a week that has gone by in the last seven years I haven’t thought about this and thought about the what-ifs and the changes and what could have been.”

The accusations of impropriety stemmed from the lengthy delay of the release of police video, which undermined earlier reports that the shooting was justified. The footage was not made public until a judge ordered Emanuel to have it released more than a year after McDonald’s death, finding that the state had violated records laws by not releasing it earlier.

Emanuel explained at the Wednesday hearing that soon after the shooting took place, there were three simultaneous investigations looking into the case, and “long-standing protocol and practice” dictated that nothing should released to prevent compromising the integrity of those investigations.

The problem, Emanuel noted, is that “the longer the investigation goes on, the greater the distrust and the greater the skepticism” about what is happening behind the scenes – that a cover-up could be taking place.

Ocasio-Cortez still believes there was a cover-up, and blasted Biden for picking Emanuel because of those suspicions.

“This nomination is deeply shameful. As mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel helped cover up the murder of Laquan McDonald – a mere teenager when he was shot 16 times in the back by a Chicago police officer,” Ocasio-Cortez said in a statement. “This alone should be flatly disqualifying for any position of public trust, let alone representing the United States as an ambassador.”

AOC SLAMS BIDEN’S RAHM EMANUEL NOMINATION AS ‘DEEPLY SHAMEFUL’

Emanuel went on to say that a politician like him would be “the last person you want to make a unilateral decision about the release of a video,” and that the call “should be made by professionals.”

“The moment a politician unilaterally makes a decision in the middle of an investigation you’ve politicized that investigation, and more importantly you may have endangered the prosecution and bringing somebody to justice,” he added.

Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., took issue with a claim that Emanuel had made about not being aware of the true nature of the shooting until the video went public. Merkley challenged Emanuel’s claim that his big error was taking at face value a police determination that it was a good shooting, which shaped his view of the matter until the public release of the video.

The senator noted that McDonald’s family had viewed the footage before then and had reached a $5 million settlement agreement with the city of Chicago before McDonald’s family even sued. Merkley doubted that this could have happened without Emanuel having been briefed about what had taken place.

Emanuel, who has always denied that there was a cover-up, responded by claiming that he had relied on a system that was “broken.”

Van Dyke was convicted of second-degree murder. Three of his colleagues, Officer Thomas Gaffney, former Officer Joseph Walsh and former Detective David March, were found not guilty of obstruction of justice, official misconduct and conspiracy.

Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth to open Ryder Cup vs. Jon Rahm, Sergio Garcia

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. — The United States duo of Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth will get the Ryder Cup started early Friday morning at Whistling Straits, taking on the European team of Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia, both from Spain.

The format for the first session is foursomes, also known as alternate shot.

Thomas and Spieth teamed to go 3-1 at the 2018 Ryder Cup in France. Garcia is the all-time Ryder Cup points leader, and Rahm is the No. 1-ranked player in the world. They begin at 8:05 a.m. ET.

“Everybody is ready to get going finally,” U.S. captain Steve Stricker said. “It’s been three years and you come in here on Sunday evening and the practice rounds are great but yet you have Friday in the back of your mind and you are just looking forward to getting out there and getting it going.

“I feel great about our pairings. Some teams that have played together over the years, whether in Ryder Cups or some Presidents Cups, so we wouldn’t put them out there if we didn’t feel good about them, let me just put it that way. So we are extremely excited about how these guys are playing, and the order of which they are going out.”

The next match pits Americans Dustin Johnson and Collin Morikawa against Paul Casey of England and Viktor Hovland of Norway at 8:21 a.m. ET. Johnson is playing in his fifth Ryder Cup, the most of any American player. He is 7-9 overall. Morikawa is a Ryder Cup rookie who has won two major championships. Casey is playing in his fifth Ryder Cup while Hovland is making his first appearance.

Americans Brooks Koepka and Daniel Berger will take on Lee Westwood and Matt Fitzpatrick, both from England. The match begins at 8:53 a.m. ET. Koepka, recovering from a left wrist injury, is playing in his third Ryder Cup while Berger makes his first appearance. Both played at Florida State. Westwood is playing in the Ryder Cup for a European record-tying 11th time. This is Fitzpatrick’s second appearance.

Americans Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay will play against Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter. The match begins at 8:53 a.m. ET. Both Schauffele and Cantlay are making their Ryder Cup debuts, but they went 2-2 as a team at the 2019 Presidents Cup in Melbourne. They were 2-0 in foursomes. McIlroy is making his sixth appearance and Poulter his seventh.

European Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harrington went with a lot of experience in the opening session, and it was no surprise that he had Rahm in the first group and McIlroy in the last. Both captains said they had a plan in place for the afternoon four-ball matches and expected to stick to it without changes. Although neither would fully commit, those sitting out in the morning are expected to all play in the afternoon.

In foursomes, players alternate hitting tee shots and then alternate hitting shots until the hole is completed. There are just two balls in play, one for each team, and a hole is won with the lowest score.

Sitting out the first session for the Americans will be Bryson DeChambeau, Harris English, Scottie Scheffler and Tony Finau. Sitting out for Europe will be Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Shane Lowry and Bernd Wiesberger.

Four four-ball matches will take place in the afternoon, with the same format used for Saturday. There will be 12 singles matches on Sunday with a total of 28 points.

Europe has won four of the last five Ryder Cups, as well as five of the last seven. It needs 14 points to retain the Cup while the Americans need 14 ½ to win it.

2021 Tour Championship leaderboard: Patrick Cantlay edges Jon Rahm to win FedEx Cup, $15 million grand prize

The final round of one of the longest seasons in PGA Tour history concluded Sunday with Patrick Cantlay emerging as the wire-to-wire winner of the 2021 Tour Championship. With the victory, Cantlay finished first in the FedEx Cup Playoffs and brought home the $15 million grand prize from the massive $46 million purse.

Jon Rahm, who moved into second on Thursday and maintained that position going toe-to-toe with Cantlay through the weekend, finished one shot back of Cantlay’s 21-under score to capture a none-too-shabby $5 million runner-up prize. He had an eagle putt to potentially tie the event on the 72nd hole Sunday, but it ran just past the hole, allowing Cantlay the chance to two-putt his way to victory without trailing once over the four-day event.

The win Sunday marked Cantlay’s fourth of the season. That level of achievement puts him firmly in place to win PGA Tour Player of the Year honors. Cantlay also captured back-to-back events to end the season, winning the BMW Championship last week to give himself a two-stroke lead on the rest of the field at East Lake Golf Club when Tour Championship action began Thursday.

Cantlay is the 13th different golfer to win the Tour Championship in the event’s 15-year history.

“It was tough. It was definitely different than any other week,” said Cantlay of leading the FedEx Cup for over a week. “It’s the longest lead I’ve ever held. I just tried to stay day after day in the present.”

Justin Thomas (-14), who finished five back of Cantlay in fourth, placed inside the top 10 in his fifth straight Tour Championship. Tokyo Olympics 2021: Jon Rahm of Spain second star golfer to withdraw after COVID-19 positive

For the second time in his last five events, Jon Rahm has been forced to withdraw because of a positive COVID-19 test. Rahm’s positive came in the final round of testing protocols ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, meaning the top player in the world will not compete in his first Games for Spain.

Rahm last tested positive during the Memorial Tournament in June, an event at which he held a six-stroke lead after Round 3. Though he had to withdraw, he went onto win his next event at the U.S. Open and recently finished T3 at The Open Championship.

“I’ve been fortunate to represent my country and win a championship for Spain around the world as an amateur. Playing in Tokyo would have given me a chance to win an Olympic gold medal for my country,” Rahm said Sunday in a statement. “I would have loved to have been the first Spanish Olympic gold medalist in golf, but unfortunately destiny had other plans. This is a great reminder for all of us that we’re still in a pandemic, things are not over, and we still need to fight together to get through this the best we can.”

There is not enough time to get a replacement for Rahm, according to the Spanish Olympic Committee. Adri Arnaus is the other Spanish team member, leaving the field in Tokyo at 59 golfers.

Rahm said in June that he was vaccinated when he tested positive at the Memorial but still in the two-week waiting period.

“Well, truth is I was vaccinated,” said Rahm at the U.S. Open. “I just wasn’t out of that 14-day period. I had started the process, and unfortunately, that’s how timing ended up being. Yeah, I was vaccinated. It’s just I was still within those 14 days when I started COVID tracing protocol, and I had to stay in it.”

Rahm has lost to eight golfers in his last four events and was the favorite to win the men’s golf competition at Kasumigaseki Country Club just outside of Tokyo.

Rahm is not the only top player to test out of these Olympics. Bryson DeChambeau of the United States also received a positive COVID-19 test this week and will not compete in Tokyo. DeChambeau has been replaced by Patrick Reed.

Open Championship winner Collin Morikawa of the United States is now the favorite to win the Olympics followed by fellow Americans Xander Schauffele and Justin Thomas. Rory McIlroy (Ireland), Hideki Matsuyama (Japan) and Viktor Hovland (Norway) are just beyond those top three on the odds board.

Jon Rahm clear-cut betting favorite at 7-1 to win The Open

Oddsmakers have Jon Rahm, fresh off his first win at a major, as the clear-cut favorite at the 149th Open this week at Royal St. George’s.

Rahm is the favorite at 7-1 at Caesars Sportsbook by William Hill. No other golfer has single-digit odds.

Bryson DeChambeau is next at 14-1, followed by Dustin Johnson at 15-1. Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele and Brooks Koepka are each 16-1. Jordan Spieth is 18-1, and Justin Thomas is 20-1.

Rahm has been in top form since early June. He had a commanding 6-shot lead heading into the final round at the Memorial Tournament, before being forced to withdraw after testing positive for COVID-19. Upon returning from quarantine, he won the U.S. Open, his first major, and finished seventh last week at the Scottish Open.

The betting action on The Open at U.S. sportsbooks is relatively evenly divided, with Rahm and Koepka receiving the most support. More money has been wagered on Rahm than any other golfer at Caesars Sportsbook at William Hill, while Koepka has attracted the most support at PointsBet and BetMGM.

“The two guys that I’m most concerned about right now are [Victor] Hovland and [Louis] Oosthuizen,” Nick Bogdanovich, director of trading for William Hill U.S., said in a company release Monday. “Both are playing really well, and we’ve got good liability on them.”

Oosthuizen is 30-1, and Hovland is 40-1.

Weather forecasts at Royal St. George’s in Sandwich, England, call for temperatures in the low 70s, with winds around 10-15 mph for the early rounds and calming for Sunday.

Darren Clarke won the last Open at Royal St. George’s in 2011. He was one of only four players who finished under par. Clarke is 500-1 this week.

Shane Lowry, who won the 2019 Open, is 33-1. The 2020 Open was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
