Whoopi Goldberg defends ‘Blazing Saddles’ against cancel culture

Whoopi Goldberg got fired up Wednesday defending the satirical western “Blazing Saddles” against internet trolls trying to cancel it with claims it takes jokes about racism too far.

The hosts of “The View” launched into a debate about how classic comedies are aging in 2022 — a topic inspired by Mindy Kaling’s recent comment that “The Office” is “so inappropriate now” and could never be made today.

Goldberg argued the 1974 Mel Brooks flick “Blazing Saddles” “deals with racism by coming at it right, straight, out front, making you think and laugh about it — because, listen, it’s not just racism, it’s all the ‘-isms.’ He hits all the ‘-isms.’”

The story, which takes place in 1874, follows a corrupt politician who hires a black sheriff to keep a frontier village from being destroyed.

“‘Blazing Saddles,’ because it’s a great comedy, would still go over today — there are a lot of comedies that are not good, OK? We’re just going to say that — that’s not one of them. ‘Blazing Saddles’ is one of the greatest because it hits everybody,” Goldberg insisted.

“If you’ve never seen ‘Blazing Saddles,’ you should do yourself a favor, get some popcorn, get a glass of wine, and put it on, because it’s magnificent,” Goldberg advised.

Co-host Sara Haines agreed that “laughing is literally the ultimate medicine for life and all that it brings” and that comedy should have a “sacred space” for artists to work in.

Joy Behar held up the ’70s TV series “All in the Family,” arguing that, “You take away Archie’s bigotry, you don’t have a character.”

“That’s who he was, and that’s the way you’re supposed to look at people,” she continued. “If everybody was perfectly wonderful… and appropriate, then you’d never learn about these other people who exist out there.”

“That’s the purpose of art: To expose you to all aspects of human beings. Why would you want to take away the beauty of watching Archie Bunker make a fool of himself?” Behar concluded.

“Leave my ‘Blazing Saddles’ alone. Don’t make me come for you,” Goldberg quipped at the end of the segment.

The “Sister Act” star also made headlines earlier this week when she revealed on “The View” that she has a clause in her will that prevents unsanctioned biopics to be made about her after she dies.

President Biden to meet Prince William, Kate amid royal racism controversy

Comment

LONDON — Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, traveled to the United States for the first time in eight years hoping to highlight a young, vibrant British monarchy capable of taking on the biggest problems plaguing the modern world. Instead, a growing controversy out of Buckingham Palace threatens to overshadow their first overseas trip since the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The royal couple arrived in Boston on Wednesday for a three-day visit that ends Friday when they announce the winners of their Earthshot prize, a worldwide competition aimed at discovering ways to safeguard the planet and fight climate change. The couple attended the Boston Celtics-Miami Heat basketball game Wednesday night, sitting courtside with Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and Gov.-elect Maura Healey (D).

The White House announced that President Biden plans to meet William and Catherine on Friday when he is in Boston. Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Wednesday that officials were finalizing the details of the meeting.

But even before William and Catherine landed, news was spreading that Lady Susan Hussey, William’s godmother and a prominent lady-in-waiting to his grandmother, had resigned her role within the royal household. Hussey stepped down a day after she reportedly pressed a Black British guest at Buckingham Palace about where she was “really from.”

In announcing Hussey’s resignation, Buckingham Palace issued “profound apologies for the hurt caused.”

Prince William’s godmother resigns royal role over treatment of Black palace guest

Ngozi Fulani, a British activist and head of a domestic abuse charity, was at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday for a reception to raise awareness about violence against women and girls. She tweeted afterward that a palace staff member, whom she identified only as “Lady SH,” came up to her and repeatedly asked her questions such as “What part of Africa are you from?” and “What Nationality are you?”

When Fulani insisted she was “born here and am British,” the woman allegedly followed up by asking, “But where do you really come from?”

The back-and-forth felt like “an interrogation,” Fulani later told the BBC. “You’re trying to make me unwelcome in my own space,” she said, describing the line of questioning as a form of “abuse.”

It’s the latest race-related controversy to envelop the Firm, as the royal family is known in the United Kingdom. Their speedy response to the incident, with Buckingham Palace indicating that Fulani’s complaint was “investigated immediately” and that the royal household member involved had “stepped aside from her honorary role with immediate effect,” suggests an awareness that they cannot afford another blowout scandal.

Last year, Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, told Oprah Winfrey in an interview that before the birth of their first child, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, the royal family expressed “concerns” in “conversations” with Harry “about how dark [Archie’s] skin might be.”

Meghan and Harry’s explosive interview reveals how the royal family’s racism lingers

The couple also accused the palace of maintaining a chummy relationship with British tabloids, refusing to defend Meghan against coverage that was “inciting so much racism” and not helping her when she was in emotional distress. This environment, Harry and Meghan suggested, contributed to their decision in 2020 to “step back” from their roles as senior members of the royal family and to move to North America. They now live in California.

The relationship between the couple and the rest of the royal family has been fraught ever since, though they all reunited earlier this year for the funeral of Harry and William’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. But William and Catherine’s visit to the United States is likely to put the relationship between the brothers — and their spouses — back in the spotlight. British media outlets have reported that Harry and William are not expected to see each other while there.

Harry and Meghan’s children have a right to royal titles. Will they get them?

The timing is a challenge: Harry and Meghan are about to release a Netflix documentary series that has raised questions about whether the couple will make further allegations of racism within the royal family. The trailer for the series, Harry & Meghan, was released Thursday.

And next week, they are also scheduled to receive an award from the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights foundation. They were named recipients of the Ripple of Hope prize in October and were celebrated by the foundation’s president for having the “moral courage” to publicly call out the “structural racism” within the monarchy.

“They went to the oldest institution in UK history and told them what they were doing wrong, that they couldn’t have structural racism within the institution; that they could not maintain a misunderstanding about mental health,” said Kerry Kennedy, one of Robert Kennedy’s surviving children, according to Insider.

British media outlets seized on an awkward parallel: Just a few days earlier, William and Catherine are set to have their own event with members of the Kennedy family, when they host the awards ceremony for the Earthshot prize — which was inspired by John F. Kennedy’s famous moonshot speech — in partnership with the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation.

Lady Hussey latest: Royal family racism scandal continues as William and Kate arrive in Boston

Mayor of Boston welcomes Earthshot to the city

Prince William and his wife Kate have arrived in Boston for their first trip abroad since the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the ascension to the throne of King Charles III.

The Prince and Princess of Wales, as they are now titled, last visited America in 2014 when they attended events in New York and Washington, DC.

Landing in Boston on Wednesday, the couple will attend an awards ceremony for the Earthshot environmental prize the prince set up and visit the John F Kennedy Presidential Library as well as local environmental and social advocacy projects.

The media spotlight on the trip is more intense as Buckingham Palace has become embroiled in a racism scandal that led to the resignation of the Prince of Wales’s godmother, Lady Susan Hussey. A spokesperson for the prince gave a sharp rebuke to her regarding comments to a Black advocate for domestic abuse survivors.

The couple sat courtside with Massachusetts governor-elect Maura Healey to watch the Boston Celtics play the Miami Heat on Wednesday night.

The royal couple are set to be greeted by President Joe Biden when he visits Boston on Friday but are not scheduled to meet with Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle who will be in New York a few days later.

Ngozi Fulani says focus should remain on domestic abuse survivors

Ngozi Fulani stressed that the focus should remain on domestic abuse survivors rather than the race row and subsequent resignation of the late Queen’s lady in waiting.

Asked how she felt about Lady Susan Hussey’s resignation, the Black charity boss told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “I want the focus to remain where it should be, which is on the women and girls who are affected by domestic abuse.

“Having said that, she’s influenced by Buckingham Palace, and it’s their decision and her decision to make, one that I had no part in.”

Asked if she would have preferred to accept Lady Susan’s apology instead of seeing her quit the household, Fulani said: “I would have preferred it did not happen.

“I would have preferred that I could go to a space where I’m invited and be treated as every other guest was treated.

“I would prefer that we kept the focus on the abuse against women and girls.”

Ngozi Fulani: ‘You’re trying to make me unwelcome’

Ngozi Fulani has spoken to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme about her treatment by Lady Susan Hussey at the royal reception on Tuesday.

She said: “Let us be clear what this is. I’ve heard so many suggestions it’s about her age and stuff like that. And I think that’s a kind of a disrespect about ageism. Are we saying that because of your age you can’t be racist or you can’t be inappropriate?

“If you invite people to an event, as I said, against domestic abuse, and there are people there from different demographics, I don’t see the relevance of whether I’m British or not British. You’re trying to make me unwelcome in my own space.”

She added: “Although it’s not physical violence, it is an abuse.”

Lady Hussey, who is Prince William’s godmother, has resigned from the household and apologised after repeatedly asking Fulani where she “really came from” during the event.

Sibling unease haunts Prince William’s climate change trip

Prince William and the Princess of Wales will be looking to focus attention on their Earthshot Prize for environmental innovators as they make their first visit to the US in eight years, a trip likely to be dogged by tensions with Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, who have criticised Britain’s royal family in the American media.

And that was before the latest racism scandal erupted at Buckingham Palace bringing past allegations back to the fore.

NYC student arrested for threatening to ‘shoot up’ City College — then freed without bail

A student at City College was arrested for allegedly sending messages threatening to “shoot up” the Manhattan school last week, and then released without bail, The Post has learned.

City University of New York officials issued a warning to the school community on Monday about the case involving 21-year-old Din Bajrektarevic, who has been suspended and barred from campus.

Bajrektarevic, of Old Bridge, New Jersey, was busted when he returned to the college in Harlem on Nov. 25 following Thanksgiving — two days after he had allegedly sent the hateful messages.

“When I shoot up the school, know who is to blame,” one of the missives said, according to the criminal complaint against him.

“The city will go to war you dumb N***** M****** (comparing the defendant’s race to an animal),” the court document states. “Your brains will be left on the f****** pavement.”

The NYPD charged him with making terroristic threats, cops said.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office prosecuted him on charges of second-degree aggravated harassment as a hate crime, first-degree harassment as a hate crime and second-degree aggravated harassment.

City College student Din Bajrektarevic was arrested for allegedly threatening to “shoot up” the school in text messages and then freed without bail.

None of the charges, including the one filed by cops, were eligible for bail under New York state law, so he was released on his own recognizance. A restraining order also was issued against him, the DA’s office said.

In its message to the school community, City College said that its public safety office “acted on the threat with the NYPD and the FBI, and the student was promptly identified and arrested.”

“All CCNY Public Safety Officers have been informed that Mr. Bajrektarevic has been suspended and barred from campus, and they are fully prepared to enforce the bar should he attempt to enter the City College campus,” the email obtained by The Post states.

Safety officials also released a photo of the student — asking for the community to “remain alert, and should you encounter Mr. Bajrektarevic on the City College campus, please immediately notify CCNY Public Safety.”

Bajrektarevic allegedly sent texts making threats against the college and containing racial slurs.

The email noted: “We have no reason to believe at this time that Mr. Bajrektarevic intends to violate the directive and attempt to enter the City College campus.  Nor do we have any indication that Mr. Bajrektarevic is in possession of any firearm or any other deadly weapon.”

Bajrektarevic’s next court date is set for Jan. 11. He couldn’t be reached Tuesday. His defense attorney didn’t immediately return a request for comment.

Broadway’s ‘Lion King’ interpreter fired for being white settles case amid backlash

The white sign-language interpreter booted from Broadway’s “Lion King” for his skin color quietly settled his federal discrimination case against the theatre company that fired him, The Post has learned.

Keith Wann and the Theatre Development Fund — a nonprofit that provides ASL interpreters at Broadway shows — resolved the dispute outside of court just two weeks after Wann filed his lawsuit and The Post published a front-page report.

“The matter between myself and TDF has been resolved and both parties are satisfied with the discussions that ensued,” Wann wrote in a social media post announcing the settlement. “I look forward to the review of the process that will come from this to hopefully benefit the interpreting profession.”

Wann filed the lawsuit on Nov. 8 after he and another interpreter, Christina Mosleh, were told to back out of the production in April so they could be replaced by black sign-language experts, according to the suit and emails obtained by The Post.

“Keith Wann, though an amazing ASL performer, is not a black person and therefore should not be representing Lion King,” Shelly Guy, the director of ASL for “The Lion King,” told Lisa Carling, the director of the Theatre Development Fund’s accessibility programs, in an email.

Wann’s decision to take the case up in court was met with online backlash from the deaf community.

“Stop taking all the jobs when we have black interpreters that are the better fit…,” said deaf performer Raven Sutton.

“You disgusted me,” Randy Spann, host of the deaf talk show The Real Talk with Randy, said in video response to Wann’s lawsuit. “Enough is enough. Let black people get their opportunities to get a spotlight.”

In a viral TikTok video, deaf performer Raven Sutton blasted Wann for his decision to sue the theatre group.

“This is not discrimination,” Sutton signed on the video that amassed over 57,000 views. “Reverse racism is not a thing. Stop taking all the jobs when we have black interpreters that are the better fit. Wipe your own white tears because we are not going to do it for you.”

“There are some people justifying why they don’t support him through the lens of racial identity politics,” said Jared Allebest, a deaf civil rights attorney.
Stephen Yang for NY Post

Many Post readers and others in the deaf community came out in force to support Wann and condemn the outrage he faced.

“I’m baffled by the hate,” Jared Allebest, a deaf civil rights attorney, told The Post. “There are some people justifying why they don’t support him through the lens of racial identity politics”

In Wann’s statement this week, the interpreter addressed the criticism he faced online and the debates his lawsuit spawned.

“Over the last week I have seen a lot of pain in our community and have also seen some much-needed conversations,” Wann wrote. “It is unfortunate that assumptions were made, and conclusions were drawn without all the facts.”
