Kevin Harvick to retire from full-time NASCAR racing after 2023 season

Kevin Harvick, the 2014 NASCAR Cup Series champion, announced Thursday morning that the 2023 season will be his last as a full-time driver. The Athletic reported Wednesday that his announcement was planned for Thursday.

“It’s time to call time. To enjoy all that we’ve achieved as a race team and to savor it with the ones who have made this journey possible,” Harvick said in a video on social media. “A new chapter is calling. One where being a dad and a husband takes precedence over being a driver. But that chapter is still a year away. There’s still more to be written.”

The coming NASCAR season, which officially begins Feb. 19 with the Daytona 500, will be Harvick’s 23rd as a competitor in NASCAR’s premier series and his 10th with Stewart-Haas Racing.

When Harvick, 47 and the oldest active full-time driver at the Cup level, would retire has been an often-asked question over the past few years and a source of much speculation. He acknowledged in December that he was considering stepping away after the 2023 season.

“Right now, I’ll know that answer before we get to Daytona,” Harvick said when asked on Dec. 1 about possibly retiring. “I don’t really have a clear answer on that right now. I think as we get to Daytona, I know 100 percent that we will have a direction because I’m not gonna start the season without knowing that direction. Just because of the fact that there’s just a lot of layers to unfold and really go through and evaluate. So we’ll see. I think it could go either way at this particular point.”

“We’re at a point where everybody needs to know what’s going on,” Harvick continued. “There’s too many tentacles to everything that happens, whether it’s the race team, driver management company, every element needs to know. It’s not fair to anybody to have to start the season not knowing.”

Harvick began racing in the Cup Series in 2001 when Richard Childress Racing named him to immediately replace the late Dale Earnhardt, who had been killed in the previous week’s Daytona 500. Harvick won two races that season and earned Rookie of the Year honors. He drove for RCR through the 2013 season before departing to join SHR, co-owned by good friend Tony Stewart.

Since aligning with SHR, Harvick enjoyed a high level of consistency that had been largely absent during his tenure at RCR. He won the Cup championship in his first season with the organization and advanced to the final playoff championship round in 2014, ’15, ’17, ’18 and ’19. His 37 wins during that span led all drivers, while his 60 career wins overall are tied with Kyle Busch for ninth all-time.

Harvick won two races in 2022 and again qualified for the playoffs for a 12th consecutive season. His first victory occurred at Michigan International Speedway in August, which snapped a 65-race winless streak. He again won the following week at Richmond Raceway.

Harvick goes into the season just 10 starts shy of reaching 800 career starts, something only nine other drivers have accomplished.

What’s exactly next for Harvick beyond driving is unknown. The entertainment management agency he founded, Kevin Harvick Inc., represents Cup drivers Harrison Burton, Ryan Preece and Ricky Stenhouse Jr., in addition to various MMA fighters, professional golfers and entertainment artists, and his involvement with the company is expected to continue. Nor would it be surprising to see Harvick expand his role on the television side where his work as a broadcaster for Fox Sports has earned him widespread praise.

Harvick’s departure creates a plum vacancy at SHR, one of NASCAR’s top organizations. The team is not expected to name his replacement Thursday.

Engineers Are Racing to Salvage Cubesat for Moon Mission

A mission to measure lunar water-ice on the Moon is in jeopardy after the cubesat failed to fire its engines shortly after launch. Time is now running out, as the team has until mid-January to fix the spacecraft’s thrusters and give it a second chance to enter lunar orbit.

NASA’s LunaH-Map, manufactured by Arizona State University, was one of 10 cubesats launched on November 16, 2022 as secondary payloads aboard the Artemis 1 mission. The tiny probe was one of six cubesats cable of sending radio signal to ground teams, in what was an upsetting rate of attrition.

Things were looking good for LunaH-Map until the following day, when mission controllers tried to engage the cubesat’s propulsion system and execute a crucial course correction maneuver. Despite several attempts, the spacecraft failed to fire its engines, preventing it from performing its intended lunar flyby on November 21. LunaH-Map was supposed to use this propulsive maneuver to direct it towards its orbit around the Moon.

Engineers are hoping to fire LunaH-Map’s thrusters in the coming weeks such that the spacecraft can take an alternate route to the Moon, Craig Hardgrove, principal investigator for LunaH-Map at Arizona State University, said during a presentation about the mission at the Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union in December, SpaceNews reported. The team has until mid-January to do so, otherwise the probe will never reach any kind of orbit around the Moon.

Data collected so far suggests that a valve within the spacecraft’s thrusters is partially stuck. Engineers are attempting to use heaters in the propulsion system to free the valve. Should the spacecraft miss its second shot at entering lunar orbit, the mission team will consider sending LunaH-Map towards a near-Earth asteroid, according to Hardgrove.

While NASA’s Artemis 1 mission was a success, its secondary payload has not been so lucky, with the majority of cubesats packed for the lunar mission failing at some point after launch. The mission suffered several delays and engineers were only able to recharge four out of 10 cubesats already packed inside the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. NASA was worried that its LunaH-Map cubesat would not have enough power to endure the journey to the Moon and complete its mission of measuring water-ice in the shadowed regions of the lunar surface, but this proved to not be a problem. The jammed valve is another story.

It won’t be long before we find out LunaH-Map’s fate once and for all, but hopefully this tiny probe can make it all the way to the Moon.

Gran Turismo movie’s first trailer shows racing action, David Harbour, and Orlando Bloom

Sony has revealed the first footage of its Gran Turismo film during its press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The short “sneak peek” video emphasizes the on-track action of the motorsport movie based on the PlayStation racing game series, but doesn’t do much to sell the story.

The video shows the lengths the filmmakers, led by director Neill Blomkamp (District 9), have gone to to recreate the look of the games with real-life race cars. Wheeling drone shots recall GT’s trailers and replay modes, while the gameplay experience is echoed in cockpit cameras and a remarkably accurate recreation of the games’ high, angled chase camera.

The film’s cast also appears in the video, addressing the audience directly to hype up the immersive qualities the racing sequences will have in movie theaters. “This movie is made for the cinema,” enthuses Orlando Bloom, promising “body-vibrating sound… The audience is going to feel every jolt, every thrill of this racing at 200 miles per hour.”

“It’s badass race-car action that you’re going to feel like you’re in the middle of,” adds David Harbour.

There will also be “drama” and “a love story”, apparently, according to Archie Madekwe, who plays Jann Mardenborough in the film. Gran Turismo is based on the story of the real Mardenborough, who went from playing Gran Turismo at home as a teen to a career as a racing driver thanks to the GT Academy contest and training program.

But we don’t get much sense of that story from this teaser. At a guess, Harbour’s character might be inspired by Darren Cox, the Nissan executive who made a deal with PlayStation to launch GT Academy, while Bloom looks the part as a potential Christian Horner-style racing team boss. Not featured in the trailer, but confirmed as joining the cast, are Darren Barnet (Paxton in Never Have I Ever), Djimoun Hounsou, and in a weird twist, Horner’s wife, former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell Horner.

Hopefully we’ll learn more from a proper trailer soon. Gran Turismo will be released in theaters on Aug. 11, 2023.
