DC Dan Quinn returning to Cowboys after HC interviews

FRISCO, Texas — For the second straight year, Dan Quinn has decided to pass up potential head-coaching jobs to remain as the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive coordinator.

Quinn interviewed with the Denver Broncos, Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts in the past few weeks.

“Unfinished business here in Dallas. My complete focus is helping the team play championship ball in 2023,” Quinn told ESPN’s Ed Werder.

During his end-of-season news conference, coach Mike McCarthy hinted at a possible return by saying, “I feel good about where we are,” but “We’ll give Dan his due time.”

Not long after the session ended, McCarthy confirmed Quinn’s decision to stay.

“We’re all extremely excited to have Dan back,” McCarthy said. “Had a chance to visit with him a short while ago. This is big for us. Gives us continuity, definitely what we’ve accomplished the last two years, building off of that. Frankly, on a personal note, I can’t tell you how thankful I am.”

The Cowboys became the first team to lead the NFL in takeaways in consecutive years since the 1972-74 Pittsburgh Steelers. The Cowboys finished tied for fifth in points allowed per game and 12th in yards. Micah Parsons is a finalist for the Defensive Player of the Year and was named a first-team All-Pro for the second straight season. Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence and Trevon Diggs were all named to the Pro Bowl.

“I think there’s a bunch of reasons,” McCarthy said. “I think it’s staff. I think it’s players. I think he’s been a head coach, he understands at this point of his life how hard it is to win a Super Bowl. So I think all of those things play into that. I think clearly Dan is in a position to be selective, and I’m extremely excited about the decision.”

Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore interviewed this week with the Carolina Panthers, who ultimately hired Frank Reich. McCarthy said he has yet to have a full meeting with Moore about the offense and the future. The Cowboys finished fourth in points per game and 11th in yards in 2022, despite not having quarterback Dak Prescott for five games because of a broken thumb.

But the season ended with a 19-12 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round of the playoffs that has led to questions regarding Moore, who remains under contract.

“I really don’t want to play this game,” McCarthy said. “Kellen Moore, just like the rest of the coaches, will be evaluated. Every coach will be evaluated. The evaluation, it takes more than one day.”

On Thursday, McCarthy confirmed assistant head coach Rob Davis, senior defensive assistant George Edwards, offensive line coach Joe Philbin, running backs coach Skip Peete, assistant defensive line coach Leon Lett and quality control coach Kyle Valero will not return.

“It’s that time of year where you evaluate everything,” McCarthy said. “The longer I do this, it clearly gets harder. There’s a personal component. Obviously, you’re talking about some relationships I’ve been involved with for a long time. That part is probably the toughest clearly for me.”

McCarthy’s immediate future is not in question. He is under contract through 2024. The Cowboys won 12 games in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1994-95, and he became the first Cowboys coach to lead the team to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons since Chan Gailey in 1998-99.

Despite the success, McCarthy’s job status has been in question numerous times the past two years even if it has not been an issue for owner and general manager Jerry Jones.

“As far as my relationship with Jerry, just using his words, we’re in an excellent spot,” McCarthy said. “The partnership that we have, he’s excited about. He told me a number of times this week that he wants me to coach here as long as Coach (Tom) Landry did (29 years). I said, ‘OK, that’s a long time.'”

Dan Quinn tells teams he’s staying as Cowboys defensive coordinator, not seeking head coaching jobs

Perhaps the biggest domino of the Dallas Cowboys’ offseason dropped Thursday afternoon.

Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, after interviewing for three head coach openings, will return to Dallas for a third season, head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed to Dallas reporters.

“We’re all extremely excited to have Dan back,” McCarthy said, per ESPN’s Todd Archer. “Had a chance to visit with him a short while ago. This is big for us. Gives us continuity. Definitely what we’ve accomplished the last two years, building off of that.

“Frankly, on a personal note, I can’t tell you how thankful I am.”

Quinn had interviewed for the Denver Broncos, Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts’ head coaching vacancies. The Cowboys sought his return, though NFL teams cannot block moves to another franchise that qualify as a promotion.

McCarthy credited staff and player relationships as reasons he thinks Quinn chose to return to the Cowboys before the positions were filled. Dallas’ progress, relative to the state of franchises with whom he interviewed, may have factored in as well.

Quinn’s next opportunity will be his second as head coach after he led the Falcons from 2015 until midway through 2020, advancing in the 2016 season to the Super Bowl.

“He understands at this point of his life how hard it is to win a Super Bowl,” McCarthy said of Quinn. “So I think all of those things play into that. I think clearly Dan is in a position to be selective. And I’m extremely excited about the decision.”

Quinn spearheaded a Cowboys defense that led the league in takeaways for consecutive seasons, the first unit to retain that crown since the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1970s.

The Cowboys ranked fifth in points allowed in 2021, Quinn’s inaugural season, after ranking seventh in 2020. Compare that with the last year before Quinn arrived, when Dallas’ 2019 unit ranked 28th.

Quinn has overseen the breakout of players including two-time All-Pro Micah Parsons, whom Quinn has creatively schemed as an off-ball linebacker and now increasingly at edge rusher. He has encouraged versatility from his defensive backs, too, including veteran safety Jayron Kearse, who has matched up on tight ends akin to a linebacker.

“Part of the player I am now is because of coach Quinn giving me the opportunity,” Kearse said earlier this month. “There’s not anything he thinks I can’t do, not anything he won’t do to put me in positions to go out there and play at a high level.

“One of those coaches who guys in this locker room would run through a wall for. … He’s been heaven-sent for me.”

In their divisional-round loss to the San Francisco 49ers, the Cowboys defense held the 49ers to just 19 points. Quarterback Brock Purdy said this week Dallas had “one of the best defenses” the 49ers had seen this year.

McCarthy said Thursday that Cowboys team owner Jerry Jones told him this week he hoped McCarthy could coach as long as franchise legend Tom Landry.

McCarthy declined to give the same vote of confidence to offensive coordinator Kellen Moore when asked.

But one major coaching decision appears to be set. And the Cowboys’ defensive players will undoubtedly celebrate it.

Dallas Cowboys Dan Quinn ‘Kick-Ass’ Answer, Jim Harbaugh with Broncos, Kliff Kingsbury Fired: NFL Coach Tracker

JAN 10: DQ RESPONDS, HARBAUGH VISITS The Dallas Cowboys finished the regular season with a disappointing 26-6 loss on the road to the Washington Commanders, but that hasn’t slowed the interest in league circles in Dan Quinn as a head coach.

But on Monday, Quinn himself “slowed” things just a bit.

“Anybody asks you, you’re flattered, …” Quinn said Monday inside The Star about the interview request from the Broncos. “So just right where my feet are and enjoying, and then we’re gonna (have) a kick-ass week.”

That is the Cowboys’ defense coordinator’s rather standard answer to such questions, but it is also the truth in how he conducts his business. Yes, Quinn is yet again a candidate for the Denver job, a vacancy he interviewed for a year ago before Denver ultimately chose Nathaniel Hackett.

Meanwhile, the Broncos on Monday conducted a visit with Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh. And Sean Payton remains high on their wish list.

JAN 9: KLIFF FIRED Last March, Texas native Kliff Kingsbury signed a six-year extension as the head coach of the Cardinals.

And now it’s over.

Kingsbury led the Cardinals to a record of 4–13, their worst record since Kingsbury arrived in Arizona, and now he’s been fired.

JAN 9 QUINN DENVER REQUEST  Dan Quinn and the Cowboys have received from Denver a request to interview the defensive coordinator, as first reported by NFL Network.

Quinn was a finalist for the same job a year ago. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has vowed to again keep Quinn working at The Star.

JAN 8 LOVIE OUT, EAGLES COACH IN? Houston Texans coach Lovie Smith has been fired, and sources tell us the Texans and Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon will have mutual interest moving forward.

Smith finished 3-13-1 in his lone season in charge.

Several league sources have labeled Gannon as a top candidate for the Texans’ potential opening after he made a strong impression during two interviews last season before the Texans promoted Smith from defensive coordinator.

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero are other highly regarded candidates.

JAN 8: QUINN VS. THE DENVER FIELD Sean Payton’s people have whispered that he’s not interested in the Denver Broncos. And Jim Harbaugh this week came right out and said he’s planning on staying at the University of Michigan.

Both were … um … fibbing. And what they actually decide to do figures to impact the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff, especially defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.

Read all about it here.

JAN 8: LOVIE OUT? Sources tell us that coach Lovie Smith’s job security is considered to be in serious danger heading into the final game of another dismal season for the Texans. Furthermore, we are told Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon and Houston would have mutual interest if the job comes open. Stay tuned …

JAN 8: PEES RETIRING? Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Dean Pees is no stranger to hanging up the play sheet.

Pees, 73, is the NFL’s oldest coach and has twice retired, once following the 2017 season with the Baltimore Ravens before reversing course a month later and joining the Tennessee Titans, and again two years after, ultimately coming back to coaching after a season off once Arthur Smith took the head coaching job in Atlanta.

And if he retires again? Here’s the in-house list for the Falcons jump-up.

JAN 2: ‘DUMB’ MOVE – RON IN JEOPARDY? Cowboys at Commanders comes on the heels of this story: “Dumb’ Coach Ron Rivera Getting Fired by Dan Snyder?” This is worth monitoring … all because of a commitment to Carson Wentz.

Robert Quinn trade grades for Eagles, Bears: Star defensive end dealt to Philly for a fourth-round draft pick

The undefeated Philadelphia Eagles have been the talk of the NFL through the early portion of the 2022 regular season, and it’s in large part because of the several impactful moves they made in the offseason. The Eagles apparently aren’t done adding to their roster, however, as they have traded a fourth-round pick to the Chicago Bears in exchange for defensive end Robert Quinn, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones confirmed.

The pass-rusher has recorded eight combined tackles and one sack through seven games played. While Quinn is 32-years-old, he has still been an impactful player. Just last season, he recorded 18.5 sacks in 16 games played, and was named to the Pro Bowl as well as given All-Pro honors.

The former No. 14 overall pick was selected by the St. Louis Rams out of North Carolina in 2011. Quinn recorded double-digit sack numbers in three of his first four NFL seasons, including a career-high 19 sacks in 2013. This is not the first time Quinn has been traded, as he was dealt to the Miami Dolphins in 2018, and to the Dallas Cowboys in 2019. After those two one-year stints, Quinn signed with the Bears ahead of the 2020 season.

Per NFL Media, the Bears will be picking up most of the remaining salary for Quinn. He has two years remaining on his five-year, $70 million deal after 2022, per Spotrac. Philly currently has Brandon Graham and Josh Sweat at defensive end, and the two have combined for 5.5 sacks in six games played. Quinn will fit right in on this talented defense.

Here’s how we grade this trade:

Eagles: A-

Go off, Howie Roseman. This move shows that the Eagles are all-in on winning a Super Bowl. Remember how the Rams added Von Miller at the trade deadline last year? Not that Quinn is Miller, but this move is similar. It could be something that further sparks a talented defense to be even better as Philly hits the ground ready to run following its bye week. Quinn ain’t a spring chicken, but he showed last year he’s still an impactful player.

Philly gets an experienced pass-rusher it can move around with Graham and Sweat. A fourth-rounder is a pretty decent price to pay for a 32-year-old, but what I like about this deal is that NFL Media reports the Bears will be “picking up most of the remaining salary” for Quinn. Unfortunately we don’t have much clarity on what exactly that means, but Bears fans probably didn’t feel as good about the trade after that tidbit was reported.

Bears: B-

With this move, it looks like the Bears will be putting more on the plates of Dominique Robinson and Trevis Gipson. The Bears were reportedly shopping Quinn around this month as the trade deadline approached, and they found a willing partner in the Eagles. A fourth-rounder for Quinn at face value sounds solid, but again, what does it mean that the Bears will be “picking up most of the remaining salary” for the player who will no longer be sacking the quarterback for them? At the same time, the Bears are currently in the top 10 of most cap space with $6.69 million, per Over The Cap, and lead the NFL in cap space next year with just shy of $116 million. Maybe the money wasn’t a huge deal, and maybe one of these younger players can be a solid starter at defensive end.

Texas Longhorns’ Quinn Ewers knocked out of game vs. No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide in first quarter

Texas’ Quinn Ewers will not return to Saturday’s game against No. 1 Alabama after the freshman quarterback left with an apparent left shoulder injury after being driven into the ground by the Crimson Tide’s Dallas Turner.

Ewers was taken to the locker room for an X-ray after the injury in the first quarter, sources told ESPN’s Pete Thamel. He was wearing street clothes when he returned to the sideline in the second half.

Turner was flagged for roughing the passer after landing on Ewers on the first-quarter play, with the official saying it was because he drove Ewers into the turf.

Ewers immediately grabbed his left shoulder after the hit and stayed down on the field while special assistant to the head coach Gary Patterson and trainers attended to him. After going to the sideline, Ewers went to the medical tent before then heading to the locker room with a towel over his head.

He had kept Alabama on its heels, going 9-of-12 for 134 yards, and had just completed a 46-yard pass to Xavier Worthy to the Alabama 1-yard line on the previous play.

Hudson Card relieved Ewers, and Bijan Robinson scored two plays later to tie the score at 10-10 on the first play of the second quarter.

Ewers, a highly touted transfer from Ohio State, made his first collegiate start last week against Louisiana-Monroe, going 16-of-24 for 225 yards and two touchdowns and one interception in a 52-10 win.

Quinn Ewers named starting quarterback for Texas Longhorns football

The Texas Longhorns have named Quinn Ewers, the heralded recruit who began his college career early at Ohio State to capitalize on name, image and likeness opportunities before transferring back to his home state, as their starting quarterback.

Ewers, who is from Southlake, Texas, had been competing for the job with Hudson Card, who opened the 2021 season as Texas’ starter but mostly played behind Casey Thompson.

The Longhorns open the season against Louisiana-Monroe on Sept. 3 before hosting preseason No. 1 Alabama on Sept. 10.

The 6-foot-2, 206-pound Ewers initially committed to play for the Longhorns in the class of 2022, but reclassified to the 2021 class and signed with Ohio State after the state of Texas had prohibited high school athletes from earning money from their name, image and likeness. Ewers took just two snaps and did not attempt a pass for the Buckeyes last season.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian told ESPN earlier this week that he had “an idea” of who would be the team’s starting quarterback, and would tell the team soon. Ewers, in a tweet earlier this week, hinted an announcement was coming Friday.

Sarkisian said he does not want to rotate quarterbacks, like the team did with Card and Thompson in 2021.

“I think it’s hard for a quarterback to get into rhythm that way, and I think you play differently knowing, ‘Hey, I don’t know how many throws I’m going to get,’ and you take too many chances,” Sarkisian said. “I just don’t think the decision-making is very good.”

Texas is set to add to its quarterback room in 2023. Arch Manning, the No. 2 overall player in the ESPN 300, has committed to play for Sarkisian and the Longhorns.
