Indianapolis Colts guard Quenton Nelson agrees to record 4-year extension

Indianapolis Colts Pro Bowl offensive lineman Quenton Nelson has agreed to a record-setting, four-year extension that will make him the highest-paid guard in NFL history, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The deal has an average annual value of $20 million and includes $60 million guaranteed, the source said. Indianapolis finished the deal Saturday night with Nelson’s agent, RJ Gonser of CAA.

Nelson, who was scheduled to make $13.8 million this season, was set to be one of the top free agents in the 2023 class. His deal shatters the previous record for most guaranteed money and annual salary for a guard.

Drafted sixth overall in the 2018 draft out of Notre Dame, Nelson had been an All-Pro guard in each of his first three seasons before missing four games this past year with an ankle injury.

Nelson’s 94.1% pass block win rate was 12th among guards last season, and his 71.7% run block win rate was 13th at the position. Overall, Nelson’s 94.6% pass block win rate since entering the NFL in 2018 ranks seventh among guards.

Indianapolis Colts’ Carson Wentz, Quenton Nelson, Ryan Kelly set to return to practice

WESTFIELD, Ind. — Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz, guard Quenton Nelson and center Ryan Kelly will practice on a limited basis this week, coach Frank Reich said Sunday.

Wentz has been out since injuring his left foot on the second day of training camp on July 29. Nelson has been out since Aug. 2 after injuring his right foot. Wentz and Nelson had foot surgery on Aug. 2 and 3, respectively. Kelly has been out with a left elbow injury since July 30.

Wentz’s and Nelson’s return to practice is the bigger news because the Colts said Kelly would only be out a couple of weeks with his elbow injury. The team gave a five- to 12-week time frame on Wentz’s and Nelson’s recoveries. If both return this week, it will be just three weeks removed from their respective surgeries.

The expectation isn’t to have all three players take part in every drill during practice this week. The coaching staff will slowly ease them back in to avoid any possible setbacks. Wentz has played a full season just twice in the first five years of his career. Nelson has not missed a game since entering the NFL in 2018.

The goal is to have Wentz and Nelson ready for the Colts’ Week 1 game against Seattle on Sept. 12. Reich said last week that he wants Wentz to have at least a couple of weeks of practice before he plays in a regular-season game.

“In the perfect world, we have a really good idea after that third preseason game and Carson would get to work two weeks going into the first game,” Reich said last week. “That’s the perfect world. The next perfect world is he only gets the work of game week. I don’t know if that’s going to happen. It could be Week 2, Week 3. That’s still to be determined. He has not pushed it. Everything’s going well, but we have not pushed it yet. We’re going to have to wait until we get to the point where we push it and see how things respond and we just don’t want to do that too soon, too fast.”

Jacob Eason and Sam Ehlinger have been splitting the Colts’ first-team snaps at quarterback for the past two weeks. Neither player has taken control of the competition to be the starter if Wentz is not ready for the season opener. Reich said he hasn’t decided who will start the preseason finale at Detroit on Friday.

Eason is 31-of-48 for 315 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in the preseason. Ehlinger is 18-of-28 for 225 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions.

Indianapolis Colts’ Carson Wentz, Quenton Nelson trending to play in NFL Week 1 after foot surgeries, sources say

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz and guard Quenton Nelson are trending toward recovering from foot surgeries in time for next month’s regular-season opener against the Seattle Seahawks, sources told ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

The Colts announced last week that Wentz and Nelson would be sidelined five to 12 weeks after operations to repair the same foot injury.

Wentz, who had surgery Aug. 2, will start his rehab next week but was at the Colts’ training camp practice Tuesday without a walking boot and without limping.

The Colts hope to have a better indication of both players’ rehabilitation status once they are two weeks post-surgery.

With Wentz out, sixth-round rookie Sam Ehlinger has split the first-team practice snaps with Jacob Eason and will continue to do so in Thursday and Friday’s joint practices with the Carolina Panthers.

Eason had been considered in the lead to start if Wentz did not recover in time to face the Seahawks, but coach Frank Reich referred to Eason as the starter “right now” multiple times after Saturday’s practice.

How much Wentz plays in 2021 will affect the Colts’ compensation in their trade for the quarterback. The Colts gave the Philadelphia Eagles a conditional 2022 second-round pick that could become a first-rounder if Wentz either plays at least 75% of Indianapolis’ offensive snaps or plays 70% of the snaps and the team reaches the playoffs.

Nelson, who underwent surgery Aug. 3, has been an All-Pro in each of his three NFL seasons while starting all 48 regular-season games and three playoff games.

Information from ESPN’s Mike Wells was used in this report.
