These 20 EVs Will Keep Their Tax Credits for Now

Photo: Ford

There are 20 electric vehicles that will qualify for the $7,500 EV tax credit through the end of the year, the U.S. and Mexico are ending a labor probe at a Mexican Stellantis plant, and Warren Buffet doesn’t seem to0 worried about the car market. All that and more in The Morning Shift for Wednesday (my dudes), August 17, 2022.

1st Gear: The 20 Qualifiers

President Biden signed the sweeping tax, climate and health care bill on Tuesday, and the administration now says about 20 models will still qualify for the up to $7,500 EV tax credit through the end of 2022.

That being said, the law immediately ends credits for almost three quarters of the 72 models that were previously eligible. That’s because, in order to qualify, the EVs must now be assembled in North America.

The number of eligible vehicles is likely to change come January 1, 2023, when new restrictions on battery and mineral sources and pricing caps come into play. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, an industry trade group, says it’ll make all or nearly all EVs ineligible. From Automotive News:

The automaker group said it will work with the administration “as they issue critical guidance and new regulations – so the EV tax credit is as available and beneficial to consumers as possible.”

Currently eligible vehicles are 2022 model year EV or plug-in hybrid electric versions of the Audi Q5; BMW X5 and 3-Series Plug-in; Ford Mach-E, F-Series, Escape PHEV and Transit Van; Chrysler Pacifica PHEV, Jeep Grand Cherokee PHEV and Wrangler PHEV; Lincoln Aviator PHEV and Corsair Plug-in; Lucid Air; Nissan Leaf; Volvo S60; and Rivian, R1S and R1T. The 2023 Nissan Leaf, BMW 3-Series and Mercedes EQS are also eligible.

Some models are built both in North America and overseas and consumers should check vehicle identification numbers to ensure eligibility, the Treasury Department said.

Buyers can still qualify if they had binding written contracts before Biden’s signing and some automakers had been urging customers to make portions of deposits non-refundable to qualify.

The law also makes General Motors and Tesla vehicles eligible for tax credits starting on January 1. They had previously lost the credits after hitting the old 200,000-vehicle per manufacturer cap. However, it’s not clear if any of the vehicles they make would qualify under the new restrictions.

2nd Gear: U.S. and Mexican Labor Probe Ends

The U.S. and Mexican governments have resolved a labor dispute with a Mexican Stellantis manufacturing plant.

The agreement at Teksid Hierro de Mexico is the fourth labor probe to end under the 2020 United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). It was one of Mexico’s longest-running labor conflicts.

U.S. labor officials said workers at the plant, which makes parts for heavy vheicles including Cummins, Volvo and Mack, were previously denied their rights to choose their union and do collective bargaining. From Reuters:

Reuters reported last week that Teksid, which employs some 1,500 people, expected to close the case without going to a dispute panel after the company recognized an independent union, a move workers attributed to U.S. pressure under the USMCA.

Workers since 2014 had fought to establish a union known as The Miners at the Teksid plant in the northern state of Coahuila, and accused the company of colluding with a powerful rival union to block their efforts.

The USMCA resolution “will help end eight years of rights violations against Teksid workers,” U.S. Labor Secretary Marty Walsh said in a statement.

As part of the agreement, the unit of Italian-French carmaker Stellantis in July agreed to re-hire, with back pay, 36 workers who said they had been fired in retaliation for supporting the union, which also represents metalworkers and miners.

Stellantis says it is “diligently cooperating” with governmental officials during the process. The company says it respects collective bargaining rights and will comply with local laws.

3rd Gear: Buffett Ain’t Worried

Warren Buffett doesn’t seem to think the good times are over for car dealers just yet. New filings show Berkshire Hathaway tripled its stake an Ally Financial, a long-time automotive financial company, to $1 billion in the second quarter of 2022.

The world’s most famous investor seems to believe lending margins will remain strong and default rates will stay low. From Financial Times:

In the two pandemic years, shares in Ally rallied 57 per cent. The stock was buoyed by consumers flush with cash flocking to buy used vehicles. Auto manufacturers were unable to meet demand for new cars.

Ally shares, have fallen by a quarter so far in 2022. Wall Street is worried about the finances of the US consumer as well as a normalisation in the auto market. Ally says those worries remain overstated, a view that now has the implicit endorsement of a legendary investor.

Between the end of the 2019 and the start of 2022, the Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index increased by a vertiginous 70 per cent. Higher used car prices supported bigger loans at a time when there were virtually no concerns about immediate credit losses.

Net interest revenue increased substantially in the current quarter, compared with 2021. However, Ally was forced to accrue credit loss provisions so big that pre-tax income fell 40 per cent year on year. The company insists those provisions are simply a natural reversion to ordinary levels.

The move is a vote of confidence not only in auto loans, but in consumer spending power as a whole. If Warren’s not worried about our ability to confidently spend money, why should we be?

4th Gear: BMW’s Battery Switch Up

China’s EVE Energy CO Ltd is going to start supplying BMW with large cylindrical batteries for the company’s electric cars in Europe. It’s reported BMW is following in Tesla’s footsteps by adopting the new technology. Vehicles with the new batteries are due to hit the market in 2025.

Earlier this year, Tesla starting manufacturing its new large-format 4680 cylindrical battery. 4680 means 46 millimeters in diameter and 80 millimeters in length. Tesla says it expects the new battery to lower production costs and improve range compared to the current-generation 2170 cylindrical batteries.

EVE’s batteries are expected to be a similar size to Teslas. From Reuters:

EVE, a supplier to BMW in China, did not directly address Reuters queries when asked for comment. BMW said it plans to release some battery-related news in early September but declined further comment.

The shift by BMW, which currently uses prismatic batteries, underscores growing momentum for larger-format cylindrical batteries. Prismatic batteries, which are rectangular in shape, have become the most common form of auto battery in the past two years as they can be more densely packed, saving on costs. But proponents of cylindrical batteries argue the newer larger format cells have become more cost-effective due to improvements in energy density.

China’s CATL (300750.SZ), the world’s largest battery maker, is also due to start supplying cylindrical batteries to BMW from 2025.

Expectations are high that these batteries will also be large-sized cells. CATL did not respond to a request for comment on planned dimensions.

Right now, it’s not clear exactly how many batteries BMW plans to get from EVE and CATL.

5th Gear: Out Of Power

Toyota has suspended operations at one of its plants in China after local authorities issued an order to conserve electricity. The manufacturing facility will be shuttered until Saturday, according to a spokesperson for the company.

Sichuan province, where the plant is located, is rationing industrial electricity consumption during its worst heatwave in 60 years. It’s caused producers of fertilizers, lithium and other metals to suspend plant operations or curb output. From Reuters:

Industrial users across 19 out of 21 cities in the province were ordered to suspend production from Aug. 15 until Aug. 20 to prioritise residential power supply, according to a notice issued on Sunday by the Department of Economy and Information Technology of Sichuan.

“We’re monitoring the situation every day and following the guidance from the government,” the Toyota spokesperson said.

Toyota wouldn’t say just how much vehicle output would be impacted by the suspension.

Reverse: Up!

This is transportation content if I’ve ever seen it.

Neutral: I’m A Gossip Girl Now

I just signed the lease on an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Call me Blair Waldorf, because I’m very fancy. Unfortunately, this will continue my issue of not being able to have my car in the same state I live in. You win some, you lose some. What can ya do, ya know? It’s going to be a fun time. Buh bye, Lower Manhattan.

6/24 WWE Friday Night Smackdown results: Powell’s review of Gunther vs. Ricochet for the Intercontinental Title, Sami Zayn vs. Shinsuke Nakamura and Shotzi vs. Tamina in Money in the Bank ladder match qualifiers, The Viking Raiders return

By Jason Powell, ProWrestling.net Editor (@prowrestlingnet)

WWE Friday Night Smackdown (Episode 1,192)
Live from Austin, Texas at Moody Center
Aired June 24, 2022 on Fox

[Hour One] Smackdown opened with a recap of Roman Reigns beating Riddle to retain the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship in last week’s main event followed by the return of Brock Lesnar…

Michael Cole and Pat McAfee checked in on commentary and hyped Reigns vs. Lesnar in a Last Man Standing match for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship as the SummerSlam main event. Samantha Irvin was the ring announcer…

Drew McIntyre made his entrance and welcomed viewers to the show. He said that no matter how many wins he gets, Reigns keeps ducking him. He said he would have to take matters into his own hands by winning Money in the Bank.

McIntyre acknowledged Brock Lesnar getting a title shot at SummerSlam. McIntyre said that’s okay and Lesnar does things his way, whereas he does things the hard way. McIntyre was interrupted by entrance music.

Sheamus, Ridge Holland, and Butch made their entrance. Sheamus spoke as they walked to the ring and said SummerSlam would be the perfect time to cash in the MITB contract once Reigns and Lesnar are finished beating the hell out of each other. Sheamus and his crew entered the ring. Sheamus said McIntyre’s experience with MITB is having someone win it and cash in on him.

Paul Heyman interrupted with a “ladies and gentlemen” line from backstage. Heyman and birthday boy Adam Pearce walked onto the stage together. Heyman said Reigns would retain his championship at SummerSlam, but he said they have a problem.

Heyman said Reigns would be left vulnerable to a cash-in by someone such as McIntyre or Sheamus. He said it’s not a knock on Reigns. He said Lesnar would also be vulnerable, and then he quickly said he wasn’t saying Lesnar would win. Heyman said he was there to make sure that didn’t happen.

Pearce recalled his previous ruling that McIntyre and Sheamus would both be in the MITB ladder match despite competing to a double disqualification in a qualifying match. Pearce said that after some influence by Heyman, WWE management chose to overrule his decision. Pearce said McIntyre and Sheamus would not be part of the MITB ladder match.

Pearce said there was a path forward for both of them to qualify. He said they would need to put their issues aside and defeat the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions Jimmy and Jey Uso later in the night. The Usos made their entrance and joined Heyman on the stage. Cole hyped an MITB qualifier for after the break… [C]

Powell’s POV: Stephanie McMahon made her first good decision as the interim CEO! Okay, not really, but it was a ridiculous storyline decision that McIntyre and Sheamus both qualified for the MITB match despite fighting to a double DQ. I’m fine with this new approach and the segment was fine aside from McIntyre claiming that Reigns is ducking him when it’s already been announced that McIntyre has a title match at the Cardiff Stadium show over Labor Day weekend.

Cole announced that the Usos would not be defending the tag titles nor attempting to qualify for the MITB ladder match when they face McIntyre and Sheamus…

Shinsuke Nakamura was already in the ring. Backstage, Kayla Braxton interviewed Sami Zayn, who said it would be a great night for The Bloodline. Zayn said “we” will always do what’s right for Reigns. Zayn dedicated his match to Reigns. He said he would win the MITB match. Braxton asked if he would cash in on Reigns or Lesnar. Zayn said he was doing this to protect Reigns. Zayn’s music played and he made his entrance…

1. Sami Zayn vs. Shinsuke Nakamura in a Money in the Bank ladder match qualifier. Cole expressed skepticism regarding Zayn’s claim that he wouldn’t attempt to cash in the MITB contract if he wins it. Zayn performed an exploder suplex that sent Nakamura crashing into the ringside barricade. Zayn hoped to win via count-out, but Nakamura beat the referee’s count. A short time later, Zayn caught Nakamura seated on the top rope and dumped him to ringside. [C]

Zayn put Nakamura down with a Michinoku Driver for a near fall. Zayn went up top and was cut off by Nakamura, who eventually crotched him. Nakamura went for a Kinshasa that Zayn avoided. Zayn rolled up Nakamura, but the referee Jason Ayers, who was mentioned by name by Cole and McAfee, caught him using the ropes for leverage.

A short time later, Nakamura went for his finisher, but Zayn rolled to ringside. Nakamura followed and blasted him with a flying knee to the head. Nakamura threw Zayn back in the ring. When Nakamura followed, Zayn blasted him with a Helluva Kick in the corner and pinned him…

Sami Zayn defeated Shinsuke Nakamura in 9:55 to qualify for the Money in the Bank ladder match.

Powell’s POV: A good match and the usual opportunistic fun from Zayn. He wouldn’t be the sexy pick to win the MITB contract, but there’s definitely a lot of fun to be had with him and The Bloodline if they choose to go in that direction.

Cole and McAfee listed Seth Rollins, Omos, and Sami Zayn as the three entrants. A graphic showed four open slots. Cole reminded viewers that McIntyre and Sheamus could fill two spots if they beat the Usos later in the show…

Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods made their entrance. Cole said they would face Jinder Mahal and Shanky in a rematch from last week… [C]

Mahal and Shanky made their entrance. Before the match would start, Kingston and Woods took the mic and said no one wants to see a rematch and they don’t engage in rematch after rematch after rematch.

Kingston and Woods played to the crowd and asked if they wanted to see Shanky dance. Mahal objected, but Woods played his trombone and Shanky did his dance until Mahal stopped him. Shanky shoved Mahal, who left the ring. Kingston had the New Day music play and then he and Woods danced with Shanky.

A Gjallarhorn sound played. The Viking Raiders entered the ring from the broadcast table side and attacked Kingston and Woods. Erik and Ivar had new black face paint. They performed a double powerslam on Kingston, and then Ivar power slammed Woods from the middle rope…

Powell’s POV: Finally, something fresh for the Viking Raiders. Sure, they are still cosplayers, but at least they are heel cosplayers. By the way, I guess we’re supposed to forget New Day’s series of matches with The Brawling Brutes (and all of the other teams) they had rematch after rematch with. If nothing else, I’m looking forward to the inevitable endless series of matches that New Day will now have with The Viking Raiders.

Backstage, Sonya Deville approached Adam Pearce and said people were saying he’s in over his head and out of touch with reality when it comes to the way he’s handled the women’s division. She complained about not having a match on Smackdown in weeks. She pointed to Raquel Rodriguez and Lacey Evans getting MITB qualifiers. She told him not to take it out on her because his in-ring career was a failure. Pearce told her she would be in a handicap match after the break…

Powell’s POV: Failure? That man is a former Steel Domain Wrestling Northern States Television Champion! Oh, and he won the NWA Championship five times.

Lacey Evans and Raquel Rodriguez were in the ring coming out of the break. Sonya Deville made her entrance and was accompanied by Xia Li and Shayna Baszler…

2. Sonya Deville (Xia Li, Shayna Baszler) vs. Lacey Evans and Raquel Rodriguez in a handicap match. Evans and Rodriguez did not have televised entrances. Rodriguez set up for her finisher at one point, but Baszler stood on the apron and distracted her. Evans made a blind tag a short time later and then hit the Woman’s Right on Deville and pinned her.

Lacey Evans and Raquel Rodriguez beat Sonya Deville in a handicap match in 3:05.

Li and Baszler ran in afterward, but Evans and Rodriguez cleared the heels from the ring…

Powell’s POV: Are they trying to establish a friendship between Evans and Rodriguez to eventually set up one of them turning on the other?

“The Street Profits” Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins were shown backstage. They came across Los Lotharios kissing a woman on her cheeks. They also found Drew Gulak working out on a pair of ladders. They ran into Madcap Moss. Dawkins told Moss a terrible joke that Moss and Ford no-sold…

Ronda Rousey’s entrance music played. Natalya ran out dressed like Rousey and pushing a baby stroller… [C]

[Hour Two] Natalya stood in the ring and said her name is Ronda Rousey and fans probably know her as the Baddest Woman on the Planet. She said that’s because she doesn’t shut up about it and just like her mommy she never taps. She said she had footage that showed her almost tapping out. Footage aired of Natalya putting the actual Rousey in a Sharpshooter.

Natalya knelt down and tapped out while still playing Rousey. She said the best thing to do is retire, push her stroller, and leave while she can. “As a competitor, I’m probably the saddest woman on the planet,” Natalya said.

Smackdown Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey made her entrance and said she almost didn’t recognize Natalya “without your rack out.” Rousey said she and Natalya couldn’t be more different. She said she wouldn’t pass up having kids to not miss a day wrestling in ten years

Rousey said she also wouldn’t mutilate her body while chasing impossible beauty standards like Natalya does. Wow. Rousey said she wouldn’t just hand over her title because Natalya thinks she’s earned it. Rousey climbed onto the apron and said Natalya thinks she deserves the title.

Rousey entered the ring and told Natalya is so lacking in natural talent and absent of charisma that the closest she’ll get to being a main eventer in WWE is dressing up like her. “Nice jacket,” Rousey said. She ripped Natalya’s leather jacket off. Natalya picked up the stroller and hit Rousey with it. Natalya left the ring while Rousey stood tall…

Powell’s POV: Natalya needled Rousey, who really went for the jugular with her rebuttal. If the goal was to make this feel personal in a one-sided manner, then mission accomplished. I hope Natalya gets to hit back hard next week.

Backstage, Megan Morant interviewed Drew McIntyre and Sheamus. They bickered. McIntyre told Sheamus he could take the night off and he would face The Usos in a handicap match. Sheamus wasn’t having it and told McIntyre to bring his A game. Butch entered the picture and was held back by Ridge Holland…

Ludwig Kaiser introduced Gunther for the Intercontinental Title match… [C] Cole plugged Undertaker’s one-man show for Nashville during SummerSlam weekend… Ricochet made his entrance…

3. Gunther (w/Ludwig Kaiser) vs. Ricochet for the Intercontinental Championship. Ricochet started the match with a dropkick. Gunther came back and applied a half crab. Kaiser taunted Ricochet from the floor and then Gunther countered into another hold before Ricochet reached the ropes. Ricochet got some offense until Gunther cut him off with a dropkick. Gunther powerbombed and pinned Ricochet…

Gunther defeated Ricochet in 3:10 to retain the Intercontinental Championship.

Powell’s POV: A dominant win for the new IC Champion, just as it should have been.

Backstage, Paul Heyman was interviewed by Kayla Braxton, who said he could be doing Brock Lesnar a big favor by potentially removing Drew McIntyre and Sheamus from the MITB ladder match. Sami Zayn showed up and said Heyman didn’t have to answer her questions. He took issue with Braxton saying he would cash in on Reigns. Zayn said he would never cash in on Reigns. Heyman put his arm around Zayn. However, Heyman removed his arm after Zayn said he would cash in on Lesnar. Heyman stared at Zayn, who wasn’t sure what to do so he just walked away…

Tamina stood in the ring for her MITB qualifying match with Shotzi, which Cole said was coming up next… [C]

Powell’s POV: I think they idea was that Heyman took offense at Zayn implying that Lesnar could actually win the match. I could be reading it wrong, but I don’t think they’re going back to playing up the question of where Heyman’s allegiances lie.

Shotzi made her entrance. McAfee acknowledged that it was scheduled to be Shotzi vs. Aliyah, but he said Aliyah got hurt and was replaced by Tamina…

4. Shotzi vs. Tamina in a Money in the Bank ladder match qualifier. Tamina performed an early power slam for a two count. Shotzi came back until Tamina cut her off with a kick as she was leaping from the ropes. Tamina had the pin, but Shotzi put her foot under the ropes. Shotzi came back and hit her Never Wake Up DDT and scored the pin…

Shotzi defeated Tamina in 2:40 to qualify for the Money in the Bank ladder match.

The updated graphic showed Asuka, Lacey Evans, Raquel Rodriguez, Alexa Bliss, Liv Morgan, and Shotzi as MITB qualifiers. Cole said there is only one spot remaining…

Powell’s POV: They got it right by having Shotzi go over. Now let’s just hope that they save her from herself by not letting her do anything too crazy in the ladder match.

Backstage, Erik spoke about how they have been pushed aside and forgotten for too long. Ivar said no one will stand in their way…

Max Dupri was shown talking to someone who was blocked by a door. A graphic listed that Dupri would present his first Maximum Male Model… [C]

A spotlight was over the center of the ring and music played. They cut backstage where Max Dupri scolded Adam Pearce. He said last week it was the lighting, and this week their dressing room wasn’t up to the specified standards. Dupri said his models would not debut due to the circumstances and said they would be ready next week…

Powell’s POV: I wish the former LA Knight and Eli Drake was wrestling on the main roster, but I am getting a kick out of the Dupri gimmick thus far. I hope Pretty Deadly end up being two of his models. They are a good tag team and would be perfect for this.

McAfee stood on the broadcast table and set up a recap of Happy Corbin scolding him last week. McAfee played to the crowd while talking about how much he enjoys his job. McAfee challenged Happy Corbin to match at SummerSlam. McAfee said he would feel more alive than he’s ever felt in his life when he kicks Corbin’s teeth down his throat. McAfee had the crowd chant Bum Ass Corbin. “Don’t be a coward, you punk,” McAfee said.

Cole asked McAfee if he was sure he wanted to do this. McAfee said he had lightning in his hands and feet. He called Corbin an insufferable douchebag. Cole said we would find out what Corbin has to say in return next week…

Sheamus made his entrance along with Ridge Holland and Butch. Drew McIntyre made his entrance with his giant f’n sword… A video hyped John Cena’s return for his 20-year celebration on Monday’s Raw… [C]

Cole hyped all of the men’s and women’s MITB ladder match participants appearing on next week’s Smackdown in Phoenix… The Uso made their entrance for the main event…

5. Drew McIntyre and Sheamus (w/Ridge Holland, Butch) vs. Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions Jimmy Uso and Jey Uso in a non-title match to qualify for the Money in the Bank ladder match. The Street Profits made their entrance before the opening bell and sat in on commentary. McIntyre and Sheamus ended up bickering and were pushing and shoving each other heading into a break. [C]

Holland and Butch had been ejected during the break. Sheamus was isolated. The Usos got caught up in jawing with the Profits. Jimmy ran into a knee from Sheamus and then both men tagged out. A short time later, Butch ran out with Holland trying to stop him. The referee got rid of them.

Meanwhile, Sami Zayn appeared and tried to help the Usos, but the Profits took him out. The Usos bickered with the Profits until McIntyre did a flip dive onto them. McIntyre counted down for his finisher, but Jimmy stuffed it with a superkick. McIntyre followed up with the Claymore Kick and scored the pin…

Drew McIntyre and Sheamus defeated Jimmy Uso and Jey Uso in a non-title match to qualify for the Money in the Bank ladder match in 11:20.

Sheamus jawed at McIntyre afterward. The updated MITB entrants list was shown. Cole hyped that all of the MITB qualifiers would appear on Smackdown next week just one night before MITB…

Powell’s POV: A good main event that saw McIntyre and Sheamus qualify for MITB the right way as opposed to getting in via their double disqualification match. Overall, this was a good episode. I have to keep it brief tonight because I’m doing back to back coverage with Smackdown followed by AEW Rampage. I will be back after Rampage with audio reviews of both shows for Dot Net Members (including our Patreon patrons). Let me know what you thought of Smackdown by grading the show below.

IC Title Match, MITB Qualifiers

Welcome to our WrestlingINC.com live WWE “SmackDown” viewing party. Tonight’s show is broadcasting live from the Moody Center in Austin, Texas.

As of Friday afternoon, three matches were announced for tonight’s show.

  • WWE Intercontinental Championship Match: Ricochet vs. Gunther (c)
  • Money in the Bank Qualifying Match: Sami Zayn vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
  • Money in the Bank Qualifying Match: Aliyah vs. Shotzi

Our live coverage will begin at 8 PM ET.

Please share today’s Viewing Party coverage on social media and chime in with your thoughts in the comments section below.

Before we begin, there’s a late change announced to one of tonight’s matches.

We’re on the air! We open with a recap of last Friday’s main event, where Roman Reigns successfully defended the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Riddle and was then confronted by Brock Lesnar.

Michael Cole and Pat McAfee are on commentary and welcome us to the show with a reminder of the SummerSlam main event: Reigns defending his title against Lesnar in a Last Man Standing match.

In the arena, Drew McIntyre makes his entrance. We get a recap of McIntyre and Sheamus fighting to a double disqualification in a Money in the Bank qualifying match. Last week, Adam Pearce decided to give a spot in the match to both men.

McIntyre says when he was drafted to “SmackDown” he was willing to start from the bottom but no matter how many wins he stacks up, Roman Reigns continues to duck him. McIntyre says it’s time to force his hand by winning Money in the Bank.

McIntyre points out all Lesnar had to do was show up last week to get a title match. McIntyre says that’s fine and that’s “The Brock Way”. McIntyre says he’ll be watching at SummerSlam and ready to cash in on whoever wins.

Sheamus interrupts, alongside Ridge Holland and Butch. Sheamus gets in the ring and tells McIntyre to cool his jets. Sheamus agrees the perfect time to cash in MITB will be immediately after the SummerSlam main event. Sheamus throws a little shade on the University of Texas since we’re in Austin tonight. Sheamus points out he’s a former MITB winner and he successfully cashed in on Reigns.

Paul Heyman strolls out to interrupt both men. Adam Pearce follows Heyman out on stage. Heyman predicts victory for Reigns at SummerSlam. However, he also admits that Reigns will be vulnerable after a Last Man Standing match against Lesnar to a MITB cash-in by Sheamus or McIntyre. Heyman says he’s here to ensure that won’t happen.

Heyman says Pearce has a special announcement. Pearce says he was a bit hasty in putting both McIntyre and Sheamus into the Money in the Bank match and after some influence by Heyman, WWE management has overruled Pearce’s decision and neither man will be in the Money in the Bank match. However, both men can qualify if they team together tonight and defeat The Usos.

The Usos make their entrance and stand on stage.

We’re told the MITB qualifying match between Sami Zayn and Shinsuke Nakamura is coming up next. But first, we go to a commercial break.

Back from the break, we’re reminded McIntyre and Sheamus must beat The Usos tonight to get into the Money in the Bank. Also, The Usos’ titles are not on the line and a win will not get The Usos into the MITB match.

In the arena, Shinsuke Nakamura is already in the ring.

Backstage, Kayla Braxton introduces “honorary member of The Bloodline” Sami Zayn. Zayn says it’ll be a great night for The Bloodline. Zayn says he’ll beat Nakamura and win the Money in the Bank match. Braxton asks if he’ll cash in on Reigns. Zayn tells her to not put words in his mouth. He’s doing it to protect Reigns. Zayn’s music plays and he departs to make his entrance.

Money in the Bank Qualifying Match: Sami Zayn vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

Nakamura attacks at the bell and puts Zayn in an arm bar. Zayn fights out of it but Nakamura stays on the attack with kicks to Zayn’s chest. Nakamura hits his sliding German suplex while Zayn is hung up on the ropes. Nakamura follows with a flying kick for a 2-count.

Zayn rolls out of the ring to the floor. Nakamura follows but gets cut off and slammed into the ring post. Zayn hits an exploder suplex into the barricade on Nakamura. Zayn gets back into the ring. Nakamura narrowly beats the referee’s count back into the ring.

Nakamura hops to the second turnbuckle but Zayn pushes him off and Nakamura spills to the floor as we go to a commercial break.

Back from the break, Zayn is in control. Zayn goes to the second turnbuckle but Nakamura cuts him off. Zayn kicks Nakamura away but leaps right into a kick to the head for a 2-count.

McAfee says it’s 145 degrees in Austin, Texas.

Nakamura fires up on Zayn with a series of strikes but runs into a Michinoku Driver by Zayn for a 2-count.

Zayn climbs to the top turnbuckle. Nakamura cuts him off and climbs up to meet him. Zayn fights him off and Nakamura falls to the mat. Nakamura recovers and crotches Zayn on the top rope. Zayn falls to the mat. Nakamura lines up for the Kinshasa but Zayn eludes it and rolls up Nakamura with his feet on the ropes. The referee catches him. Zayn argues with the ref and Nakamura hits a knee to the back of his head from the second turnbuckle. That gets a 2-count.

Nakamura lines up Zayn again. Zayn rolls out of the ring to the floor. Nakamura gives chase and hits the Kinshasa on the floor. Cole says he has to get Zayn back into the ring for some reason. Nakamura does roll Zayn into the ring. Nakamura slides in but Zayn is waiting with the Helluva Kick and gets the pin!

Sami Zayn defeated Shinsuke Nakamura via pinfall

Zayn joins Seth Rollins and Omos as those officially entered in the men’s Money in the Bank ladder match.

Back in the arena, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods make their entrance and we go to a commercial break.

Back from the break, Jinder Mahal and Shanky are making their entrance. Shanky continues to dance behind Mahal’s back when he’s not looking.

Kingston and Woods have microphones and explain that they beat them last week “clean as soap”. Woods says The New Day does not engage in a rematch after rematch after rematch because that makes no sense. Kingston says they have a bone to pick with Mahal because he won’t let Shanky dance. Kingston wants to give the people what they want. He asks if they want to see a dancing Shanky. The fans admit that they do.

Woods plays his trombone and Shanky proceeds to dance. The New Day music plays for a moment in the background. Mahal quickly decides he has seen enough and cuts off Shanky. Shanky shoves Mahal and leaves. The New Day ask for more music and they dance with Shanky.

They’re cut off by a loud horn. Woods is confused at first and then we see images of the Viking Raiders on the big screen. The Viking Raiders attack from behind to lay out Shanky and then go after Kingston and Woods. They make quick work of them too. They finish off Kingston with a double powerbomb. Ivar then hits a front slam on Woods from the second turnbuckle.

Backstage, Adam Pearce gets a visit from Sonya Deville. Deville feels a little embarrassed for Pearce after he had to backtrack on his McIntyre/Sheamus decision. Deville says the women’s division has been talking behind his back. Deville says she’s been back on “SmackDown” for weeks and still hasn’t had a match. She says Pearce’s in-ring career was a failure. Pearce says Deville will be in the ring tonight for a handicap match against Raquel Rodriguez and Lacey Evans and that match is next. But first, we go to a commercial break.

Back from the break, Lacey Evans and Raquel Rodriguez is already in the ring.

Sonya Deville makes her entrance and is accompanied by Shayna Baszler and Xia Li.

Lacey Evans & Raquel Rodriguez vs. Sonya Deville (with Shayna Baszler and Xia Li)

Deville starts off against Evans. They lock off and Evans overpowers Deville and gets a quick 2-count. Evans takes down Deville and gets another 2-count.

Outside the ring, Baszler and Li distract Rodriguez. In the ring, Evans is sidetracked by Li and Deville hits a chop block from behind. Deville hits a running kick and covers Evans. Rodriguez rushes in to break up the pin attempt.

Deville and Evans kick one another at the same time and both are down. Evans crawls to her corner and tags Rodriguez.

Rodriguez runs wild and hits a big shoulder tackle on Deville. Deville creates some space but runs into a powerslam. Rodriguez hits Snake Eyes on Deville and tries for the Tejana Bomb but Deville slips out. Devill hits Rodriguez who backs into a blind tag by Evans. Deville doesn’t see it and gets hit with the Woman’s Right for the pin.

Lacey Evans & Raquel Rodriguez defeated Sonya Deville via pinfall

Baszler and Li try to attack Evans and Rodriguez after the bell but that doesn’t work. Rodriguez and Evans stand tall in the ring as Baszler, Li, and Deville retreat.

Backstage, we find the Street Profits. They find Los Lotharios smooching a random woman. They decided to keep walking and find Drew Gulak working out with a pair of ladders. They walk on and find Madcap Moss warming up. The Profits like what Moss did to Happy Corbin last week and Dawkins wants to tell a joke.

Angelo Dawkins: “Why’d the coach go to the bank? … To get his quarter back!”

Back in the arena, Ronda Rousey’s music plays but it’s not Rousey who enters. It’s Natalya dressed as Rousey and pushing a baby stroller. Cole assures us Rousey is here tonight. But first, we go to a commercial break.

Back from the break, Natalya is in the ring with a microphone. Natalya introduces herself as Ronda Rousey. She calls for some footage from two weeks ago when Natalya attacked Rousey and put her in the Sharpshooter. Natalya knows Rousey didn’t tap out at that moment, but Natalya thinks she was close.

Natalya gets on her knees and taps out on the mat right now and apologizes to Rousey’s fans. She thinks Rousey should just hand over her title, retire and push her stroller into the sunset. Natalya refers to “The Saddest Woman on the Planet”. That draws out Rousey.

Rousey says she almost didn’t recognize Natalya without her rack out. Rousey says she’s not going to mutilate her body chasing impossible beauty standards. Rousey says Natalya is lacking talent and charisma and the closest she’ll ever be to becoming an attraction in this company is by dressing up as her.

Rousey rips off Natalya’s jacket. Natalya hits Rousey with the stroller and retreats back toward the stage.

Backstage, Megan Morant interviews Drew McIntyre and Sheamus. Sheamus says McIntyre is gonna be dragging him down. McIntyre suggests Sheamus and his friends take the night off and he’ll beat The Usos by himself. Sheamus it’s his time and he’ll see him out there.

Back in the arena, Ludwig Kaiser introduces the WWE Intercontinental Champion Gunther. The title match against Ricochet is next. But first, we go to a commercial break.

Back from the break, Gunther waits in the ring. Ricochet makes his entrance.

WWE Intercontinental Championship Match: Ricochet vs. Gunther (c)

Ricochet attacks with a drop kick at the bell. Gunther misses a chop and Ricochet kicks away but Gunther hits a bodyslam and big boot. Gunther stomps on Ricochet. Gunther grounds Ricochet and puts him in a half Boston Crab. Gunther transitions to a crossface. Ricochet reaches the bottom rope to break the hold.

Gunther hits a European uppercut in the corner but misses a charge. Ricochet springboards but Gunther catches him. Ricochet flips out of a German suplex and hits a running knee. Ricochet charges and runs right into a clothesline. Gunther chops Ricochet into the corner and lays in more chops. Gunther hits a German suplex and a running shotgun drop kick. Gunther hits a powerbomb and that gets the pin.

Gunther defeated Ricochet via pinfall

Backstage, Kayla Braxton interviews Paul Heyman. Braxton asks if Heyman’s plan is actually doing Brock Lesnar a favor. Sami Zayn interrupts and says Braxton tried to twist his words earlier and make it sound like he would cash in Money in the Bank on Roman Reigns. Zayn assures Heyman that would never happen. Heyman is pleased. Zayn says he’d cash in on Lesnar. Heyman is no longer pleased. Heyman stares at Zayn until Zayn walks away.

Back in the arena, Tamina waits in the ring. She’ll face Shotzi in a Money in the Bank qualifying match next. But first, we go to a commercial break.

Back from the break, Cole and McAfee explain that Aliyah got hurt so Tamina gets this shot. Shotzi makes her entrance.

Money in the Bank Qualifying Match: Shotzi vs. Tamina

Shotzi jumps on Tamina’s back but Tamina no-sells it, grabs Shotzi by the hair, and pulls her off. Tamina hits a splash in the corner and throws Shotzi across the ring. A powerslam by Tamina gets a 2-count.

Tamina lifts Shotzi onto the top turnbuckle but Shotzi fights her off and hooks on a triangle choke over the top rope. Shotzi follows with a one-legged dropkick and an enzuigiri. Shotzi comes off the second turnbuckle but Tamina catches her with a superkick. Tamina covers but the referee says Shotzi’s foot is under the bottom rope.

Shotzi pushes Tamina through the corner into the ring post and plants Tamina with a DDT to get the win. Cole says that move is called the Never Wake Up.

Shotzi defeated Tamina via pinfall

The women’s MITB line-up is Raquel Rodriguez, Alexa Bliss, Asuka, Lacey Evans, Shotzi, and Liv Morgan. Plus, one more participant is to be determined.

Cole and McAfee show video from earlier in the show, when the Viking Raiders returned to attack The New Day and Shanky.

Backstage, the Raiders say they’ve been pushed aside for far too long and no one is safe.

Elsewhere backstage, Max Durpi is talking to someone off-screen. He’s coming up next. But first, we go to a commercial break.

Back from the break, Max Dupri’s music plays. A spotlight shines in the center of the ring. We cut to a shot backstage, where Dupri is in Adam Pearce’s face. Dupri says last week the lightning was no good. Tonight, the dressing room was not up to his standard. The temperature in the room was not to his lighting. Nor was the bottled water in the mini-fridge. We’ll try again next week.

Back in the arena, McAfee is on the top of the announce table with a microphone. He recounts Happy Corbin getting in his face last Friday, complete with a fully produced video recap. McAfee says he feels alive when he’s working in WWE. McAfee borrows The Rock’s “Millions…and millions” line. McAfee challenges Corbin to a match at SummerSlam and tells him not to be a coward. Cole isn’t sure this is a great idea.

Still in the arena, Sheamus makes his entrance, accompanied by Ridge Holland and Butch. Drew McIntyre makes his entrance. Cole and McAfee wonder how these two can possibly coexist. The match is next. But first, we go to a commercial break.

Back from the break, we’re told that all of the Money in the Bank ladder match participants will be in attendance.

In the arena, McIntyre and Sheamus wait in the ring. The Usos make their entrance. Before the bell, the Street Profits also make their entrance to watch this match.

Drew McIntyre & Sheamus (with Ridge Holland & Butch) vs. Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions The Usos

McIntyre and Sheamus argue over who will start the match. Jimmy runs across the ring to get the jump on McIntyre. McIntyre recovers with a clothesline and tags in Sheamus. They hit a double hip toss on Jimmy.

Sheamus hoists up Jimmy but he slips out and tags in Jey. Jey hits a splash on Sheamus in the corner. Sheamus recovers and hits his forearms on Jey over the top rope. Sheamus lifts Jey and hits a rolling senton slam. Sheamus lines up Jey but Jey rolls out to the floor.

McIntyre grabs Butch for some reason and throws him into the barricade. Sheamus gets in McIntyre’s face. They start throwing punches at each other and The Usos hit stereo suicide dives onto them on the floor.

We go to a commercial break.

Back from the break, Jey is in control of Sheamus. Sheamus blocks a punch but Jimmy makes a blind tag and hits a superkick for a 2-count.

Jimmy punches Sheamus in the corner. Sheamus fights back but Jimmy catches him with an enziguiri. Jimmy hits a running hip attack in the corner. The Usos pose. Jimmy lines up Sheamus again. This time he runs into a rising knee strike by Sheamus. Both men are down. Sheamus makes the tag to McIntyre. Jey also tags in.

McIntyre runs wild on Jey. He hits an overhead throw. But Jey pushes him through the turnbuckles and hits a superkick. Jimmy hits a splash from the top turnbuckle. Sheamus dives in to break up the pin attempt.

McIntyre rallies with a neckbreaker on Jimmy. He lines up for the Claymore, but Jey pulls Jimmy out of the ring. McIntyre follows but gets hit with a superkick. Butch runs out but doesn’t reach the ring. In the commotion, Sami Zayn shows up but his Helluva Kick attempt is cut off by Angelo Dawkins. The Usos and Profits jaw at each other on the floor and McIntyre hits a dive over the top rope onto all four men.

McIntyre gets Jimmy back into the ring and lines up for the Claymore. Jimmy cuts him off with a superkick but McIntyre recovers and hits the Claymore to get the pin.

Drew McIntyre & Sheamus defeated The Usos via pinfall

McIntyre and Sheamus are in the men’s Money in the Bank ladder match. They celebrate and pose for the crowd.

That’s our show.

USWNT roster for World Cup, Olympic qualifiers released

Placeholder while article actions load

Vlatko Andonovski, coach of the U.S. women’s national soccer team, used the past six months to test young players and gain a better understanding of his talent pool before the World Cup and Olympic qualifying tournament this summer.

Although some veterans were left out of that process, Andonovski swore they were still in the mix. On Monday, he recalled two of them, Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe, who will help anchor the 23-player squad at the Concacaf W Championship July 4-18 in Monterrey, Mexico.

The eight-team tournament will decide four automatic berths in the 2023 World Cup and one in the 2024 Olympics. (Another Olympic berth will be settled next year.)

First, though, the Americans will play friendlies against Colombia on June 25 in suburban Denver and June 28 in greater Salt Lake City.

Rapinoe and Morgan have not been with the top-ranked U.S. squad since October. While Morgan was an obvious selection — she leads the National Women’s Soccer League with nine goals — Rapinoe has yet to start an NWSL match this season.

Andonovski cited Rapinoe’s experience, leadership and, despite turning 37 next month, her ability to still impact the game.

“We know what Megan is capable of doing,” he said. “We saw even in some minutes regarding the last game how dangerous she can be. But also the thing with Megan is she is very important for this group. This is a young group … so her experience of going through adversity, her winning mentality and knowledge and understanding is very valuable for the group.”

Andonovski also noted Mallory Pugh, who is in top form with the Chicago Red Stars, is ahead of Rapinoe on the depth chart.

“I can’t see right now someone getting this starting spot from Mallory,” he said. “She’s just incredible.”

Andonovski added, “What makes Megan special is she understands [the situation] and she will do anything possible to push Mal to be even better.”

Morgan, a striker with 115 goals in 190 U.S. matches, has scored in five of her past eight appearances with the San Diego Wave and had a four-goal game against Gotham FC.

Defender Becky Sauerbrunn, 37, is also back after recovering from a knee injury. World Cup veterans Alyssa Naeher, Kelley O’Hara, Emily Sonnett, Rose Lavelle and Lindsey Horan were selected, as well.

“They’re not on the team because they’re just experienced; they’re on the team, first and foremost, because they can perform,” Andonovski said. “Their experiences is a bonus.”

O’Hara and Sonnett were among seven players from the Washington Spirit named to the squad. The others were goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury, midfielders Andi Sullivan and Ashley Sanchez, and forwards Trinity Rodman and Ashley Hatch. No other NWSL team has more than four.

Many regulars were not available because of injury (Catarina Macario, Sam Mewis, Lynn Williams, Tierna Davidson and Abby Dahlkemper) or maternity leave (Crystal Dunn, Julie Ertz and Casey Krueger).

Tobin Heath and Christen Press, immensely experienced forwards, were not selected. Injuries have limited Heath to 17 league matches in the past two years. Press suffered a knee injury Saturday, but even if healthy, she wouldn’t have been included on the squad, Andonovski said.

“She’s performing well,” Andonovski said, “but it’s not just her now at this point. She is competing with the players in front of her. … It’s not easy because the competition just got bigger and bigger.”

Thirteen players selected have never competed in qualifiers. The biggest surprise was San Diego Wave midfielder Taylor Kornieck, a third-year pro invited to her first senior camp. Seven others have appeared in fewer than 10 international matches.

Goalkeepers: Aubrey Kingsbury (Washington Spirit), Casey Murphy (North Carolina Courage), Alyssa Naeher (Chicago Red Stars).

Defenders: Alana Cook (OL Reign), Emily Fox (Racing Louisville), Naomi Girma (San Diego Wave), Sofia Huerta (OL Reign), Kelley O’Hara (Washington), Becky Sauerbrunn (Portland Thorns), Emily Sonnett (Washington).

Midfielders: Lindsey Horan (Olympique Lyonnais), Taylor Kornieck (San Diego), Rose Lavelle (OL Reign), Kristie Mewis (Gotham FC), Ashley Sanchez (Washington), Andi Sullivan (Washington).

Forwards: Ashley Hatch (Washington), Alex Morgan (San Diego), Midge Purce (Gotham FC), Mallory Pugh (Chicago), Megan Rapinoe (OL Reign), Trinity Rodman (Washington), Sophia Smith (Portland).

Poland, Sweden and Czech Republic refuse to play Russia in FIFA World Cup qualifiers: ‘We all want war to end’

The reverberations of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continue to ripple across the sports world. What will happen in UEFA World Cup qualifying just got a little murkier as Poland were slated to play Russia with the winner of the match taking on the winner of Sweden against Czech Republic. Initially, those teams released a statement that they would not travel to Russia for these matches leaving FIFA with a decision to make. Now they’ve taken their stance even further.

“In light of the escalation of the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine, the Polish national team is not going to play a match against the Russian Republic,” federation president Cezary Kulesza said on Twitter.

“This is the only right decision. We are in talks with the Swedish and Czech association to present a common position to FIFA.”

The Swedish federation released a statement backing Poland’s decision that was short but to the point, and a day later, the Czech FA joined the fray.

“The men’s national team will not play against Russia — regardless of where the match is played. The Federal Board also urges FIFA to cancel the play-off matches in March in which Russia participates.”

“The Czech FA executive committee, staff members and players of the national team agreed it’s not possible to play against the Russian national team in the current situation, not even on the neutral venue. We all want the war to end as soon as possible,” said the Czech FA statement released on Twitter.

These steps came after FIFA president Gianni Infantino refused to commit to a plan of action on Thursday, instead hoping that things would blow over. “The first match is one month from now and of course we hope that this whole situation will be solved before then — well before then, as soon as possible, he said. “We want to strongly believe in that. But we have a body in place, the bureau, who can take a decision at any time. We are analyzing the situation and we will take the decision when we have to take it.”

Poland’s players took to twitter to express their support for the decision to not play Russia. Bayern Munich’s superstar striker Robert Lewandowski said, “Russian footballers and fans are not responsible for this, but we can’t pretend that nothing is happening.”

The ball is back in Infantino’s court but it’s clear that waiting to make a decision won’t be acceptable as federations are taking things into their own hands. Even with matches still a month away, a solution needs to be found.

March 24
Russia vs. Poland, 1 p.m. ET
Sweden vs. Czech Republic, 3:45 p.m. ET

USA fight back in Honduras to revive World Cup qualifying campaign | World Cup 2022 qualifiers

Antonee Robinson and Ricardo Pepi scored their first international goals after a half-time change in formation, Brenden Aaronson and Sebastian Lletget added late goals and the United States revived its World Cup qualifying campaign with a 4-1 win over Honduras on Wednesday night.

US captain Christian Pulisic joined the lengthy American injured list, limping off in the 60th.

Brayan Maya put Honduras ahead in the 27th minute of a one-sided first half as the Catrachos dominated before a horn-blowing full house at Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano.

Robinson scored in the 48th minute and Pepi, starting in his international debut, in the 75th. Aaronson scored off a slick pass from Pepi in the 86th, and Lletget added his eighth international goal in the third minute of stoppage as Catrachos fans cheers turned to boos and whistles.

Criticized for waiting too long to insert substitutes on Sunday against Canada, US coach Gregg Berhalter injected Robinson, Lletget and Aaronson to start the second half for John Brooks, George Bello and Josh Sargent.

Following a counter led by Pulisic, Lletget’s cross was redirected in front by Pepi, and Robinson volleyed from 7 yards for his first goal in 15 international appearances.

Pulslic needed treatment after a challenge, then fell to the ground after trying to sprint on a dribble. He was replaced by Cristian Roldan and joined Sergio Dest, Gio Reyna and Zack Steffen with injuries.

The 18-year-old Pepi put the US ahead in the 75th off a cross from DeAndre Yedlin, another sub.

Pepi became the 65th player to appear for the US since the October 2017 loss at Trinidad and Tobago ended a streak of seven straight World Cup appearances and the 42nd under Berhalter.

Aaronson, who scored his first goal in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Canada, added his goal on a counter off a feed from Pepi.

Mexico lead the North and Central American and Caribbean with seven points, followed by Panama, Canada and the US with five each. Honduras and El Salvador have two each, and Jamaica none.

Following draws at El Salvador and at home against Canada, the US are in decent shape after three of the 14 matches. Qualifying resumes in October.

The US won for just the third time in 34 road qualifiers in which it conceded first (five draws).

Berhalter made five lineup changes, giving Pepi his national team debut and inserting Bello, Mark McKenzie and James Sands for their qualifying debuts and bringing back Sargent, who started the opener. They joined Pulisic and midfielders Tyler Adams and Kellyn Acosta in what appeared to be a 3-5-2 formation, with Adams playing wide on the right rather than defensive midfield.

Moya scored when he redirected a cross from Diego Rodríguez past goalkeeper Matt Turner after Brooks failed to make a tackle upfield.

Bello, making just his fourth international appearance, left Moya unmarked.

Notes Canada beat visiting El Salvador 3-0 on goals by Atiba Hutchison, Jonathan David and Tajon Buchanan. … Mexico got a 76th-minute goal from Jesus Corona in a 1-1 draw at Panama, which went ahead on Rolando Blackburn’s 28th-minute goal. … Costa Rica were held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Jamaica. Jimmy Marín scored in the third minute for the hosts and Shamar Nicholson tied the score in the 47th.
