Will Tom Brady re-sign with the Buccaneers for cap purposes?

Tom Brady is gone from Tampa Bay. He leaves behind a championship legacy — along with a $35.1 million cap charge for 2023.

That’s not money the Bucs owe Brady. It’s cash the Buccaneers previously have paid, using the available devices to kick the can into future years.

As to Brady’s deal, the chickens are now coming home to roost. And the Bucs are screwed.

Yes, they got what they wanted and needed from Brady. A Super Bowl championship. Two years of maximum asses in the seats (the first season included no fans, due to the pandemic). Jerseys and other merchandise sales.

But now, as they sit at a projected $55 million over the cap, the Bucs need one last favor from Brady. They need him to sign a contract for 2023, for the minimum salary of $1.1165 million. And then they need to process his retirement after June 1.

Such a contract would reduce Brady’s cap charge to $11.941 million for 2023. Retirement after June 1 would result in $10.776 million in dead money for 2023, and it would push $24.328 million in dead money to 2024.

For Brady, this would keep him from joining another team, if he changes his mind about playing. Even though he may believe right now that he’ll never play again, he could change his mind.

Signing a new contract would make it much harder. For starters, he’d be under contract with the Bucs until they put him on the reserve-retired list in June. After that, he’d remain on the reserve-retired list until the Buccaneers release or trade his rights.

After the trade deadline, Brady would have to pass through waivers after being released from the reserve-retired list.

So it’s in Brady’s best interests to become a free agent. That would give him the flexibility to do whatever he wants, with no complications or limitations. But it’s in the team’s best interests for Brady to commit to the Bucs, on paper.

If Brady will be doing the Bucs a contractual favor, it needs to happen before his current contract voids in mid-March. If he goes through with it, that will be the clearest indication he truly has no interest in joining another team.

That said, he also could re-sign in Tampa with an express understanding that, if he decides to play again, the Bucs will immediately release his rights. But, again, it would have to happen before the trade deadline, in order to avoid passing through waivers.

Yes, Brady says he’s done for good. But human beings change their minds. Who knows how he’ll feel in July or August or September? He probably doesn’t even know.

Chris Rock pictured out in NYC as Will Smith takes trip to India for ‘spiritual purposes’

Chris Rock is continuing to move on from the Oscars slap controversy, after Will Smith assaulted the comedian live in front of millions across the globe.

Rock, 57, appeared pensive as he strolled around Manhattan in New York City on Sunday. 

The sighting came a day after Smith, 53, reappeared in India, a trip that is said to be for ‘spiritual purposes’ according to a Monday report.

A source has claimed to PEOPLE that Smith is currently in India to practice yoga and meditation, after apologizing to Rock in a statement, where he said he ‘reacted emotionally’ to a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss.

Smith arrived at a private airport in Mumbai, India on Saturday, the first time he has been pictured since the Oscars debacle.

Last week, Rock’s mother Rose Rock, an author and motivational speaker, spoke to WIS-TV in South Carolina about the incident.

‘You reacted to your wife giving you the side-eye and you went and made her day because she was mulled over laughing when it happened,’ Rock said. 

Rose Rock said she watched from home and initially thought the incident was staged until Smith began to say ‘take my wife’s name out your f–king mouth.’

‘When he slapped Chris, he slapped all of us. He really slapped me.’

Rock said that her son was excited to present the award for Best Documentary Feature to friend Questlove (though Rock couldn’t know that The Roots’ drummer was going to win ahead of time) and that Smith’s actions ruined his speech.  

‘No one even heard his speech. No one was able to just be in the moment because everyone was sitting there like, ‘what just happened?’ 

The Academy banned Smith for 10 years for his actions. Rock seemed to think this was appropriate.  

Smith is reportedly in India to meet spiritual leader Sadhguru, who Smith and his family met with back in 2020 in Los Angeles

‘I wouldn’t take his award away, and I don’t see any good way they could have taken him out without disrupting,’ she said.

Smith apologized via Instagram, which Rock found less than convincing. 

‘I feel really bad that he never apologized,’ she said. ‘I mean his people wrote up a piece saying I apologize to Chris Rock, but you see something like that is personal, you reach out.’

Smith was all smiles as he landed in India Saturday – where he was seen for the first time since the infamous Oscar’s slap.

Smith was pictured touching down in a private airport in Mumbai, where he was greeted by adoring fans who he took snaps with.

Dressed casually in a white t-shirt, dark grey shorts over white compression tights and a pair of Nike sneakers, Smith looked relaxed and happy after landing in the South Asian country. 

As staff helped him unload his things from his vehicle nearby fans excitedly scream ‘Will, Will Smith!’ 

Smith then takes a couple of selfies with security and turned to the fans yelling his name, giving them a wave while flashing a smile before continuing to take a few more selfies and entering a building where he gives someone a hug. 

This is the first time Smith has been spotted in public nearly a month after slapping master of ceremony and comedian Chris Rock on live TV and in front of his co-stars after he n made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s buzzcut.

Wisconsin senators warn in rare joint statement outsiders may try to exploit Waukesha tragedy for ‘political purposes’

“It has come to our attention that outside individuals or groups may attempt to exploit the tragedy that occurred last Sunday in Waukesha for their own political purposes,” the statement said. “As the U.S. Senators representing Wisconsin, one from each political party, we are asking anyone considering such action to cease and desist.”

An 11-year-old who was injured was on a ventilator and fighting for her life. Nearly a week later, her mother shared in a medical update.

Jessalyn Torres is recovering from a broken pelvis, skull fracture and other injuries, according to one of two verified GoFundMe pages created to help the girl’s mother, Amber Kohnke. The young girl “needs more time to heal,” Kohnke said in the update on her daughter’s condition posted Saturday.
Prosecutors believe the driver was Darrell E. Brooks, 39, and they have charged him with five counts of first-degree intentional homicide and will consider a sixth homicide charge over the boy’s death.

The senators’ statement did not provide details about why they issued the warning, but said they both have “full confidence in the local officials who responded with extraordinary professionalism, competence, integrity and compassion.”

“They have many difficult duties to perform in the coming days, weeks, and months, and they should be afforded the respect and support they deserve to undertake their responsibilities without outside interference,” the senators’ statement said.

They added officials’ top priorities now are to “begin the healing process” and conduct a “thorough investigation and afford the accused full due process.”

“These will not be easy tasks, and will be made even more difficult if conducted within a politically charged atmosphere,” the statement said. “We ask everyone to demonstrate their interest and concern by praying for the victims, their families, and the entire community of Waukesha.”

Moscow decries U.S. move to call Russians ‘homeless’ for visa purposes

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia on Sunday condemned a decision by the United States to add Russians seeking U.S. visas to a list of “homeless nationals” who can apply for visas in third countries.

The move allowed Russians to apply for U.S. visas in Warsaw instead of their home country after the American Embassy stopped processing most visa applications in May due to Moscow’s ban on employing embassy staff in Russia.

The U.S. State Department lists as “homeless” applicants from countries in which the United States has no consular representation, or where consular staff cannot issue visas due to the political or security situation.

Russia became the 10th nation on the list, after Cuba, Eritrea, Iran, Libya, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria, Venezuela and Yemen.

“American diplomats have for many years been destroying the system of consular services in Russia …” foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova wrote on social media.

“They have turned a technical procedure, a routine one for the 21st century, into a real hell.”

With ties already at post-Cold War lows, Russia and the United States are in a dispute over the number of diplomats they can post to each other’s capitals, and failed to make progress at talks this month.

In addition, Russia has placed the United States on a list of “unfriendly” countries who must seek approval to employ Russian nationals – and has set the U.S. quota at zero.

At the talks, Moscow said it was willing to lift all the restrictions imposed in recent years, and Washington said it wanted parity on diplomatic staff numbers and visa reciprocity.
