‘Color Purple’ Movie to Star Fantasia Taylor, Danielle Brooks

Blitz Bazawule’s “The Color Purple” movie musical has found its Celie and Sofia in Fantasia Taylor and Danielle Brooks.

Both actors reprise their respective roles from the stage musical, where Taylor made her Broadway debut as Celie in 2007 following her “American Idol” win, and Brooks earned a Tony Award nomination for her portrayal of Sofia in the 2015 revival.

Taylor and Brooks’ casting was announced on Thursday as part of the ABC News special “Soul of a Nation Presents: Screen Queens Rising.” During the broadcast, “ABC News Live Prime” anchor Linsey Davis interviewed the women about reviving their roles for the film and following the Oscar-nominated big screen performances by Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey.

Brooks relived the emotional moment when Winfrey, who is producing the new movie under her Harpo Films banner, revealed that she was chosen for the role during a Zoom call.

“I am here representing all things purple to tell you that you are our Sofia,” Winfrey said in the recording. “I’m so happy to pass whatever baton from 35 — almost 40 — years ago to you. And I know you’re gonna kill it.”

“My heart is so full,” a teary Brooks replied. “I’m going to make you so proud.”

“You already have,” Winfrey responded. “I wanted to be the one to tell you because you know I have such love for her, this character, everything she represents and everything she brought to my life. And what I’m hoping is that she does the same thing for you.”

Brooks, who is best known for her work on “Orange is the New Black” and currently stars in “Peacemaker,” also revealed that seeing “The Color Purple” on Broadway as a teenager inspired her to act.

“Seeing all of these beautiful array of different skin tones, and voices, and the story, and I just sat like this and I cried,” she said. “I saw that it was possible, like, I could do this thing that I’ve been doing in my small town of South Carolina. I could do this for a living.”

Likewise, Taylor shared that she connected with Celie’s story as a young girl watching the movie.

“The color of my skin … my lips were always bigger, the biggest thing on my body,” she recalled, explaining how she related to Celie. “I remember being on ‘Idol,’ and we had to come up with this little thing, and I said, ‘My lips are big, but my talent is bigger.’ I had started accepting who I was at that age, but when I was younger, it was things that I dealt with — just feeling beautiful, wanting a certain kind of love, so we relate in a lot of ways.”

Davis also sat down with Goldberg to reflect on the impact of the film, which marked her feature acting debut.

“What did you feel that ‘The Color Purple’ did as far as the strength of Black women on the big screen?” Davis asked.

“It reminds people that we are the backbone of a lot of this country,” Goldberg said.

The upcoming Warner Bros. movie is an adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical, which is itself an adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The production is directed by Bazawule, best known for his work on Beyoncé’s “Black Is King,” “The Burial of Kojo” and “Cherish the Day.” Marcus Gardley (“The Chi”) wrote the screenplay, based on Walker’s novel, the 1985 film and the stage musical (with a book by Marsha Norman, and music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Stephen Bray and the late Allee Willis).

Alongside Winfrey, Spielberg also returns to produce for his Amblin Entertainment. Scott Sanders and Quincy Jones, both of whom produced the Broadway musical, are also producers. Alice Walker, Rebecca Walker, Mara Jacobs, Carla Gardini, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Adam Fell are executive producers.

Earlier this week, Variety exclusively revealed that Taraji P. Henson had joined the cast as Shug Avery. The new cast members join previously announced stars Corey Hawkins (who will take on the role of Harpo), and Oscar and Grammy-winning artist H.E.R. (who was cast as Squeak).

Following the ABC News special, Vanity Fair announced that Colman Domingo and Halle Bailey would round out the leading ensemble, as Mister and Nettie, respectively.

“The Color Purple” begins production this spring and is slated for release in 2023.

It’s time to get a purple PS5 DualSense controller (if you’re into it)

The PlayStation Direct online store is selling Galactic Purple DualSense controllers today, ahead of a wide release on February 11

Sony recently announced a new wave of colors for PS5’s DualSense controllers, and if you’re looking for something with extra flair, the time has come. While the Nova Pink and Starlight Blue controllers are available at retailers like Amazon, today’s the day for my fellow Galactic Purple admirers — that colorway is in stock “early” if you buy directly from PlayStation. Otherwise, it’s a few more weeks before the wide release on Feb. 11.

Anytime we can recapture a bit of the “nothing is off the table!” energy from the Nintendo 64 days, I’m here for it. That said, $75 sure feels steep for a gamepad, even a nice one.

As someone who already has two white controllers and cannot possibly justify getting another DualSense just because I prefer a more vibrant look, I am jealous of anyone who’s in the market for a purple, blue, or pink DualSense controller — they really pop!

Informally, I feel like purple is the crowd favorite, but I’d be curious to see a breakdown once the dust settles. Maybe Midnight Black is all you ever wanted. It’ll age well!

While I can see a lot of PS5 owners eventually picking up a spare controller (whether that’s willingly or begrudgingly) to facilitate co-op play, I wonder how many people will feel the urge to get an alternate console cover — red and black will be in stock on January 21, by the way. I’m not inherently against the idea for ~aesthetics~ reasons, but I also don’t want to swap out the parts and then have to deal with finding a safe home for the original white cover. Things got real funky with loose Xbox 360 faceplates, you know?

To everyone groaning at this article amid struggles to even find a PS5, period: I feel you.

High cholesterol: Symptoms of embolism include purple toes

High cholesterol is a consequence of many factors but the most impactful is diet. When fatty molecules accumulate on the walls of the arteries, they contribute to the formation of plaque which causes arteries to narrow over time. At this stage, health complications are rife. One sign of severe damage could arise in the feet and toes.

The formation of plaque in the arteries poses a great danger for a host of reasons.

As the arteries narrow, blood flow to the organs decreases, depriving them of key nutrients and oxygen.

What’s more, as plaque builds up inside the arteries, a cholesterol deposit might break off and cause a blockage inside a blood vessel.

This blocked vessel, known as a cholesterol embolus, could be located in the skin or inside an organ, both of which can entail severe consequences.

A cholesterol embolism can present with various manifestations, making it very difficult to diagnose.

Derm Net NZ explains: “A cholesterol embolus refers to the deposit of cholesterol loved into a blood vessel or internal organ.

“This prevents the flow of blood flow through small calibre arteries and causes malfunction or death of the tissue supplied by the affected blood vessel.”

The first signs of an embolus include fever, fatigue, weight loss, muscle pain and a loss of appetite.

DON’T MISS:

When the condition spreads to the legs, however, it can cause a mottled appearance and purple discolouration of the toes.

Small infarcts and areas of gangrene could also arise as the tissue dies, which could blacken the skin.

And in the worst-case scenario, the appearance of gangrene may necessitate amputation of the toes.

Alternatively, an embolism could damage the organs or tissues that are supplied by the blood vessels.

Those who have left high cholesterol levels untreated for prolonged periods are at higher risk of having atherosclerosis, a precursor of cholesterol embolism.

How to lower cholesterol Statins have become the mainstay of cholesterol treatment, but exercise and diet offer a natural and effective approach.

The Mayo Clinic writes: “Exercise can improve cholesterol. Moderate physical activity can help raise high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol or “good” cholesterol.”

Foods to avoid include those that contain trans and saturated fats.

Foods that contain high amounts of soluble fibre however have a lowering effect on cholesterol.

This is because fibre binds to lipid molecules inside the digestive tract and drags them out of the body.

What’s more, soy protein can inhibit cholesterol synthesis in the liver, while oats could prevent it from getting reabsorbed into the gut.

Plant sterols can also lower LDL cholesterol levels by racing against molecules for absorption in the small intestines.
