Ray Guy, Hall of Fame punter with Raiders, dies at 72

Ray Guy, the Hall of Fame punter who won three Super Bowl rings with the Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders over a 14-season career, has died at the age of 72, the NFL announced Thursday.

Guy, who was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and a member of the NFL’s 100th Anniversary All-Time Team, averaged 42.4 yards over his career from 1973 to 1986. He led the league in the category three times, while finishing second on three other occasions.

Guy also was an expert at flipping the field, recording 209 punts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line.

His longest punt was a 74-yarder against the Denver Broncos in 1977.

In 1973, the Southern Miss All-American became the first punter to be selected in the first round of an NFL draft.

Giants punter Jamie Gillan stuck in London over passport issue

Punter Jamie Gillan did not fly home with the Giants and remains in London because of a passport technicality, as first reported by NFL Network. United States diplomats got involved to change Gillan’s passport from a NATO visa to a work visa, per the report.

The Scotland native is expected to fly home Thursday, but the Giants will work out other punters in the meantime so as not to be caught flat-footed Sunday against the Ravens.

Gillian punted just twice in the Giants’ win over the Packers on Sunday, averaging 50 yards per kick and a long of 58. He is tied for fourth in the NFL in average length of his punts at 51.0 yards. His long of 69 is tied for the seventh longest this season.

Rookie DT D.J. Davidson has a season-ending knee injury, the Giants announced. He is the third member of the 2022 draft class to be ruled out for the season, joining LB Darrian Beavers and G Marcus McKethan, both of whom were hurt during training camp. Davidson, a fifth-round pick, played 43 snaps on defense and 43 more on special teams over the first five games.

Bills sign replacement for punter Matt Araiza, who was released amid rape allegation

Four days after releasing rookie punter Matt Araiza amid a rape allegation, the Buffalo Bills have found his replacement.

The Bills signed veteran punter Sam Martin to a one-year deal, the team announced Wednesday. Martin, 32, has played nine seasons in the NFL, most recently with the Denver Broncos. The Detroit Lions selected Martin in the fifth round of the 2013 draft. He played seven seasons in Detroit before spending the past two seasons in Denver.

Among punters with at least 35 punts, Martin ranked fourth with a net average of 44.1 yards per punt last season. The Broncos released Martin on Monday after he reportedly refused to take a pay cut in favor of unproven second-year pro Corliss Waitman, who has seven punts for his NFL career.

Martin’s release proved to be a break for the Bills after the unexpected release of Araiza, whom the team spent a sixth-round draft pick on him in April. Nicknamed the Punt God, Araiza was known for his booming kicks at San Diego State. He made headlines with an 82-yard punt for the Bills in his preseason debut.

The Bills released Araiza on Saturday after a woman filed a civil lawsuit alleging that he and then-San Diego State teammates Zavier Leonard and Nowlin “Pa’a” Ewaliko raped her at an off-campus party at Araiza’s residence in 2021 when she was 17 years old. Neither Araiza nor his teammates were arrested in the alleged incident.

Bills general manager Brandon Beane said Saturday that the team wasn’t aware of the allegations until notified of the pending litigation in July. Beane said the team waited to release Araiza until finding out more information.

“With the serious nature of the allegations, we don’t have the means to put all the facts together,” Beane said on Saturday. “There’s multiple versions of what happened and [Bills head coach Sean McDermott] is a football coach, and I’m a GM. We don’t have access to everything, and that’s more important than playing football.”

Araiza and his family maintain that he is innocent of the charges.

Bills release punter Matt Araiza after rape allegations in civil suit | Buffalo Bills News | NFL

The Buffalo Bills decided Saturday that it was untenable to keep rookie punter Matt Araiza on the roster amid explosive accusations that he participated in a gang-rape of a then 17-year-old girl last fall in California.

The team announced it has released Araiza, a little more than 48 hours after the public release of a civil suit against him and two of his former San Diego State University teammates.

In discussing the team’s decision Saturday evening, a somber Bills General Manager Brandon Beane said, “Our culture here is more important than winning football games.”

“The last 48 hours have been very difficult for a lot of people,” Beane said. “It’s been tough. … We sympathize with this whole situation, all the parties involved, this young woman, what she went through. Really feel bad for that whole situation. Ultimately this a legal situation, we don’t know all the facts and that’s what makes it hard.

“But at this time,” Beane said, “we just think it’s the best move for everyone to move on from Matt and let him take care of this situation and focus on that.”

Beane made it clear Araiza’s version of the events on the night in question were different than what is alleged in the lawsuit. Araiza released a statement Friday night through his agent saying the “facts of the incident are not what they are portrayed in the lawsuit” and that he looked forward to “quickly setting the record straight.”

Beane said the team did not know about allegations when it picked Araiza in the sixth round of the NFL draft in late April.

“We did not know about this, and the league did not know about this,” Beane said. “We’ve reached out to I can tell you double-digit teams at this point, and no one had anything on this. These names were sealed, wherever the investigation was at that point. Yes, if we had this, and we get things like this from guys, you know how important the character and the culture is to Sean (McDermott) and me. And anything that would have been lingering, (Araiza) would have been off our board.”

Less than 24 hours after Bills coach Sean McDermott took the podium following the team’s final preseason game Friday night and addressed the situation, Araiza was gone.

Beane said the team did not find out about the allegations until late July. The attorney for the accuser in the case, Daniel Gilleon, spoke with Kathryn D’Angelo, the Bills’ assistant general counsel, on July 31. Araiza’s attorney, Kerry Armstrong, said Friday that he believed Araiza had told the Bills about the situation shortly after a June 3 story appeared in the Los Angeles Times about the incident. The story did not include the names of any San Diego State players. A second story with an interview with the accuser was published July 29. Armstrong said he was retained by Araiza’s parents about six weeks ago.

“We were trying not to rush to judgment,” Beane said. “And obviously Matt’s version was different. And you want to give everyone as much due process as you can. Again, we’re not a judge and a jury. … “I would say it’s not easy, you’re trying to put facts around a legal situation, sometimes with limited information, and so ultimately that’s where we’re at today with a decision.”

The suit was filed in San Diego County Superior Court. No criminal charges have been filed. The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office confirmed Friday that it was reviewing a police investigation of the incident but offered no timetable for a decision.

According to the complaint, the teenager, identified as “Jane Doe” had already been drinking with friends when she arrived at the off-campus San Diego home and was “observably intoxicated.”

The teenager said Araiza, then 21, handed her a drink at the party that she believed “not only contained alcohol, but other intoxicating substances,” the suit said. She also said she told Araiza that she was in high school. He then led her to a side yard where he asked her to perform oral sex and then had sex with her, the suit said, before leading her inside.

In a bedroom of the house, the suit claims, Araiza and others participated in the rape. The others named in the complaint are Zavier Leonard and Nowlin Ewaliko. Leonard is on the San Diego State fall roster as a redshirt freshman. Ewaliko was on the team last year but is not on this fall’s roster. Lawyers for Leonard and Ewaliko have not commented.

The suit said she told her friends after the incident and went to the police the next day. Gilleon, her attorney, has released copies of journal entries she wrote after Oct. 17 the assault. The complaint said she waited for about five hours before an officer spoke to her. She was then taken a hospital for a rape exam.

Asked if the release of the 11-page civil suit brought to light details he wasn’t aware of, Beane said:

“Well, they were accusations,” Beane said. “It just clarified exactly what they were. And at that point, it’s a real civil case. It’s not a, this may happen. It’s something that you have to respond to, and at this point we’re not the judge and jury.”

Asked why the team did not have follow-up conversations with Gilleon or try to talk to the the woman after July 31, Beane said:

“I would say we had the boulders of what was going to be accused or alleged. But at that point, it wasn’t an actual case. And there was, one of the things you look at is, where is this criminally? That’s what you’re trying to find out. And so, we were just, again, trying to look at everything. (Any) one of those things on there, if true, would be a no go for us. You know what I mean? So we didn’t need all that. We just needed to try and put as many facts together as we could in a limited amount of time.”

Added Beane: “All we were trying to do was use our resources in the time we had to put the pieces together and find out what happened, and Matt was very aware if anything was not on the up and up during our process that we would remove him. Once this became a civil case two days ago, it was very serious in nature, and we felt it was in Matt’s best interest.”

The attorney for “Jane Doe” thinks the Buffalo Bills made the right decision in releasing punter Matt Araiza on Saturday. However, Dan Gilleon thinks the team took far too long to come to the decision.

Gilleon was not impressed by the Bills’ response the past month. In a statement released to The News, the attorney said:

“The Buffalo Bills had no choice but to cut their young punter after so badly botching their response to our claim: They ignored us, as though what I warned them would happen could be avoided if they just kept their heads in the sand. This is what enablers do.

“My client’s life was forever scarred in October 2021, but she handled herself with grace and dignity,” Gilleon said. “Not once did she express to me a desire to hurt her assaulters out of revenge or hatred. She never asked for a pound of flesh. Her only ask was the kind of justice that might save other young women from the hell she experienced.”

The Bills released a statement Thursday saying, in part, “Due to the serious nature of the complaint, we conducted a thorough examination of this matter.”

Beane acknowledged: “I mean, as thorough as we can be with what we were able to get our hands on. We probably should have said ongoing. It wasn’t completed. We don’t have a lot of things right now, we really don’t. This is very serious.”

McDermott said he told Araiza of the team’s decision to release him Saturday morning: “He seemed to understand. I think when we spoke again this morning that he agreed that that was probably the best thing.”

The Bills released veteran punter Matt Haack on Monday, effectively declaring Araiza the winner of the punter competition.

“It wasn’t a civil case,” Beane said. “There was no criminal case. What we had was accusations that could come forward and we were still piecing it together. Obviously, 48 hours ago or sometime around then, a civil case was filed. We read through that and circled back again with Matt. Again, it’s a lot of things that right now we can’t close the loop on.”

Asked about the decision to cut Haack, who subsequently was picked up by the Indianapolis Colts, Beane said:

“That’s a tough one. You can second guess whether that was the right move. We’ll definitely look at that going forward if this situation or a similar situation happens.”

Beane said Araiza’s agent was unaware of the accusations until late July.

“His agent did not know,” Beane said. “Our understanding without getting into it is that Matt learned sometime this summer that he was being investigated, and that’s when he hired, I don’t know the date, but I believe he hired his attorney sometime around the time we found out.”

Araiza’s agent, Joe Linta, did not return a News call Saturday night.

Armstrong, Araiza’s attorney, released the following statement: “Matt is very upset and disappointed that his career with the Bills ended not because he played poorly, but because of false allegations leveled against him by a young lady and her attorney. I hope he is back in the NFL soon. He deserves to be, as he is the hardest-working 22-year-old I know.”

Asked again why the accusations were not enough to take action on Araiza in early August, Beane said: “We were trying not to rush to judgment. And obviously Matt’s version was different. And you want to give everyone as much due process as you can. Again, we’re not a judge and a jury.”

Araiza received a signing bonus of $216,148 upon signing a four-year contract with the Bills that would have been worth a total of $3.8 million. The contract is not guaranteed, and he does not receive his 2022 salary from the team due to the release.

Buffalo Bills release punter Matt Araiza in wake of gang-rape lawsuit

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. – The Buffalo Bills have released punter Matt Araiza two days after a civil lawsuit was filed alleging he and two other current and former San Diego State football players gang raped a minor.

Araiza was not at practice Saturday after being held out of Friday’s preseason game against the Carolina Panthers and was not on the sideline during the game or in the locker room after the game concluded. He traveled back to Buffalo, N.Y. on the team plane.

In a press conference after the game Friday, coach Sean McDermott declined to comment on Araiza’s status or exactly what the team knew prior to the lawsuit being filed. McDermott did say that there was “some” new information learned in the 24 hours since the suit had been filed but did not comment if he felt Araiza had lied to him or the team.

“It’s just a matter of trying to find the truth at the end of the day, right,” McDermott said. “That’s the goal is find the truth and do the right thing. And that’s what I keep coming back to in my mind and my heart is find out the truth to the best of my ability and do the right thing.”

In a statement released Thursday, the team said they “conducted a thorough examination of this matter.”

The lawsuit alleges that Araiza, who was 21 at the time, of having sex with a then-17-year old high school senior, who was under the age of consent in California, outside an off-campus party held at his residence in the early morning of October 17, 2021. Later, the suit claims, Araiza then brought her inside the home, where at least three other men, including the other two defendants named in the suit, Zavier Leonard, a redshirt freshman with the Aztecs, and Nowlin Ewaliko, who is no longer on the team’s roster, were located. She was then repeatedly raped for about an hour and a half.

Araiza’s criminal attorney, Kerry Armstrong, told ESPN that his client spoke with the girl at the party but that the rape allegations are “just untrue.”

Armstrong also said that it is his understanding that Araiza did not inform the Bills of this issue until after an L.A. Times article, published June 3, reported that rape allegations against five Aztecs football players had not been investigated by San Diego State.

McDermott declined to comment on when the Bills became aware of the allegations.

A criminal investigation is ongoing into the alleged events as well as an investigation by San Diego State under the California State University systemwide policy.

The NFL said in a statement that it was aware of the incident but declined to comment. Because the alleged rape happened before Araiza was drafted, he would not be subject to the league’s personal conduct policy.

The Bills released punter Matt Haack, the team’s punter in 2021, on Monday, naming Araiza the team’s punter for the 2022 season. He was the only punter on the team’s roster with quarterback Matt Barkley punting four times for the Bills against the Panthers.

Araiza was drafted by the Bills in the sixth-round of the 2022 NFL draft.

NFL punter Matt Araiza and two former college teammates accused of rape in lawsuit

Araiza, Zavier Leonard and Nowlin “Pa’a” Ewaliko were part of the San Diego State University football team at the time of the alleged incident last October.

Araiza said in a statement issued through his attorney that, “The facts of the incident are not what they are portrayed in the lawsuit or in the press. I look forward to quickly setting the record straight.”

Araiza didn’t play in the Bills’ preseason game against the Carolina Panthers on Friday in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Earlier, his attorney, Kerry Armstrong, told CNN his client didn’t rape the accuser.

“He never used any force against her. She was not visibly intoxicated. He did not hand her a drink with anything in it,” Armstrong added.

Araiza “hopes it does not affect this career with the Buffalo Bills. He really likes the team and hopes he can stay with them,” said Armstrong.

Jane Doe says she attended a party in the San Diego area with friends, but was separated from them when she met Araiza, according to the lawsuit. The claim further asserts that Araiza “could observe that Doe was heavily intoxicated” and “handed her a drink anyway.”

“Doe informed Araiza that she attended Grossmont High School. Araiza, who was 21 years old, knew or should have known that Doe was a minor,” the complaint says.

The woman says Araiza led her to a bedroom where “there were at least three other men already in the bedroom,” including Leonard and Ewaliko, who were both at least 18 at the time, according to the court document. Shortly after Doe entered the bedroom, the men allegedly began engaging in sex acts with her, the lawsuit claims.

“Doe was raped for about an hour and a half until the party was shut down. Doe stumbled out of the room bloody and crying,” said the complaint.

Doe reported the alleged incident the next day to the San Diego Police Department and underwent a rape examination at a local hospital, according to the lawsuit. Days later, detectives arranged “pretext” calls between Doe and the men they had determined as her alleged attackers, said the claim.

“During the call, Araiza confirmed having sex with Doe, even telling her that she should get tested for STDs,” said the claim but when she pressed him about their encounter, “Araiza immediately changed his tone, saying, ‘This is Matt Araiza. I don’t remember anything that happened that night,’ at which time he terminated the pretext call by hanging up on Doe,” the complaint alleges.

Ewaliko’s lawyer, Marc Carlos, told CNN in a phone interview that he sees some issues with Doe’s credibility and the circumstances under which she reported the event. “The filing of the civil suit is clearly an attempt to put pressure on the DA to file a case,” he said.

Ewaliko is not enrolled at San Diego State this semester, according to Carlos.

Leonard’s attorney, Jamahl Kersey, said: “We are aware of the lawsuit that was filed yesterday and we respectfully decline to comment.” He said he could not comment on his client’s status as an San Diego State student or player.

The police pepartment has submitted its investigation to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office and is being reviewed, the DA’s office said, though officials did not indicate when a charging decision might be made.

CNN has also requested comment from police.

The university released a statement saying it “takes allegations of sexual assault seriously.” but was not able to release specific details on the case due to privacy concerns stating the allegations were still under “active university investigation.” The statement said further that a violation of the university’s student code of conduct could potentially result in “suspension, dismissal or expulsion.”

“We were recently made aware of a civil complaint involving Matt from October 2021,” a Buffalo Bills spokesperson said. “Due to the serious nature of the complaint, we conducted a thorough examination of this matter. As this is an ongoing civil case, we will have no other comment at this point.”

NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy said in a statement league officials are aware of the matter but had no additional comment.

An NFL player cannot be suspended for conduct before joining the league. But if a person is investigated for actions that occur while an NFL player, prior conduct can factor into potential discipline, according to the NFL’s personal conduct policy.

CNN’s Jill Martin and Taylor Romine contributed to this report.

Bills rookie punter Matt Araiza accused in civil lawsuit of participating in gang rape of minor

Buffalo Bills rookie punter Matt Araiza and two others have been accused of gang raping a minor during an off-campus party at San Diego State University last year in a lawsuit filed Thursday in the County of San Diego Superior Court.

The lawsuit alleges that Araiza had sex with a 17-year-old girl outside of an off-campus home, where Araiza lived, and then he brought her into a room where she was repeatedly raped. The plaintiff is identified in the suit as “Jane Doe,” because she was underage at the time, but is now 18, according to the Associated Press.

The two other current and former San Diego State football players named in the complaint are Zavier Leonard, currently on San Diego State’s roster, and Nowlin “Pa’a” Ewaliko, who is no longer on the team. Araiza became a star punter for the Aztecs as a redshirt junior in 2021, winning the Ray Guy Award as the nation’s top punter ahead of entering the 2022 NFL Draft.

The lawsuit states that the plaintiff had been drinking with friends when they decided to go to the party on Oct. 17 and she was “observably intoxicated upon arrival.” She became separated from her friends and was approached by Araiza, who offered her a drink, according to the lawsuit. The plaintiff believes the drink “not only contained alcohol, but other intoxicating substances,” the complaint said.

There have been no arrests made and San Diego Police have not publicly identified any suspects, according to the Associated Press. NFL Media’s attempts to reach San Diego Police and the district attorney’s office were unsuccessful.

A lawyer representing Araiza told the Los Angeles Times, which first reported the lawsuit, on Thursday that he had not yet reviewed the complaint against Araiza, but said that the allegations were false.

“We were recently made aware of a civil complaint involving Matt from October 2021,” the Bills said in a statement on Thursday, obtained by NFL Network’s Mike Giardi. “Due to the serious nature of the complaint, we conducted a thorough examination of this matter. As this is an ongoing civil case, we will have no other comment at this point.”

The university launched a Title IX investigation into the incident last month, per the Times.

The Bills selected Araiza in the sixth round of the 2022 draft, and earlier this week Araiza won the team’s starting punting job for the upcoming season.

The Bills play the Carolina Panthers in their final preseason game on Friday. Araiza traveled with the team, Giardi confirmed.

New Orleans Saints terminate contract of punter Thomas Morstead

New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced today that the club has terminated the contract of punter Thomas Morstead.

Morstead, 6-4, 235 pounds, spent the last 12 seasons in Black and Gold after being selected in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL Draft out of SMU. A team captain since 2013, he made an immense contribution both on the field with the organization and with the local community.

Morstead appeared in 190 career regular season games, ranked fourth in team record books and punted 692 times for 32,190 yards for a 46.5 gross punting average and a 41.6 net, ranked second in NFL record books since the statistic was first recorded in 1976. 251 of his punts landed inside-the-20-yard line, tied for the 33rd-highest total since the stat was recorded in 1976 and the most in club record books. Morstead served as the club’s primary kickoff specialist from 2009-14 and 259 of his 532 career kickoffs have sailed into the end zone for touchbacks (48.7%). His most famous work from a kicking tee occurred as a rookie in Super Bowl XLIV, when he successfully executed an onside kick at the start of the second half that was recovered by New Orleans and led to a touchdown, nicknamed “Ambush”. Morstead was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2012, when he was also a consensus All-Pro. Throughout his career, he has been selected as NFC Special Teams Player of the Week five times.

Morstead also appeared in 15 postseason games for New Orleans, second in club record books and punted 54 times for 2,405 yards with a 44.5 gross punting average and a 41.0 net with 19 dropped inside-the-20.

In 2020, Morstead appeared in all 16 regular season games, for the 11th time in his 12-year career and punted 62 times for 2,674 yards with a 43.1 gross punting average, 41.7 net with 23 dropped inside-the-20 yard line. He was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week following the season-opening win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, when he booted six punts for 264 yards with a 44.0 gross/net, five inside-the-20 and also successfully hit a kickoff that was fumbled by Tampa Bay and recovered by New Orleans to set up a touchdown.

Off the field, Morstead and his wife Lauren made extensive contributions to the Gulf South Community, leaving a lasting legacy through their “What You Give Will Grow” foundation, established in 2012. The team’s nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 2013, Morstead focused the majority of his efforts in the region on cancer-related and child-related initiatives, as well as stepping up to assist those in need during holiday seasons as well as when natural disasters affected the region.

“Thomas Morstead has been the epitome of the consummate pro since the day we selected him in the 2009 NFL Draft,” said Loomis. “He has been a remarkable punter and an outstanding leader in the locker room and eight-time team captain. His work in the community has been nothing short of remarkable. We know that as we approach the beginning of the NFL calendar year that very difficult decisions have to be made and this certainly falls into this category. We appreciate the dedication and professionalism that Thomas has brought to our organization from the moment he joined our team and sincerely wish both he and his family the best.”

“Thomas has been a very important part of the New Orleans Saints organization and our community since 2009,” said Saints Head Coach Sean Payton. “It has been an honor to have coached him and to have witnessed his growth as a player and a person. He has been a great leader and mentor to many younger players throughout his career and his Pro Bowl level of play year-in and year-out has been remarkable. I know that Thomas will be highly successful in the future and am grateful to have had the opportunity to coach him.”
