Tom Verlaine, frontman for punk band Television, dead at 73

Tom Verlaine, the frontman and guitarist for the rock band Television, died Saturday in Manhattan following a “brief illness.” He was 73 years old.

Verlaine’s death was announced by Jesse Paris Smith, the daughter of fellow musician Patti Smith.

“Dearest Tom. The love is immense and forever,” Paris Smith wrote in an Instagram post. “My heart is too intensely full to share everything now, and finding the words is too deep of a struggle.”

Patti Smith and Verlaine had dated when they were “in the emerging New York Punk scene,” according to the Guardian.

The two collaborated many times over the years, including co-authoring a book of poetry called “The Night,” released in 1978.

The punk rocker, born Thomas Miller, adopted his stage name after French symbolist poet Paul Verlaine.

Verlaine, a New Jersey native, formed Television in New York City in 1973 with his high school classmate Richard Hell after their original group, The Neon Boys, disbanded that same year.

The band released its debut album Marquee Moon in 1977, where Verlaine also earned producer credit.

Television broke up in 1978 and remained on hiatus until they reunited in 1992. The group has toured on and off since 2001.

The band most recently toured in October of 2022 with 80s rock Icon Billy Idol in the United Kingdom.

Many icons across the music industry have paid their respect to the punk rock legend.

“This is a time when all seemed possible,” Patti Smith posted a poetic message on Instagram with a photo of two from their younger years. “Farewell Tom, aloft the Omega.”

“Tom Verlaine is one of the greatest rock musicians ever. He effected the way John and I play immeasurably. Fly on Tom,” tweeted Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea.

“RIP Tom Verlaine. Along with Patti Smith’s Horses, Marquee Moon ranks as one of if not THE best New Wave album of the 70’s punk era,” the band Simply Red’s official Twitter tweeted.

“‘I’ve lost a hero…. You introduced me to a world that flipped my life upside down. I am forever grateful.’ – Michael Stipe,” the official Twitter of REM, tweeted out a quote from their lead singer in honor of Verlaine.

“He made incredible music that greatly influenced the US & UK punk rock scene in the ‘70’s RIP,” said Billy Idol.

Rumor Roundup: The Elite troll Punk, Thunder Rosa return, Lashley, more!

Speculating on the rumors surrounding pro wrestling is a favored pastime of many fans, perhaps second only to actually watching the matches. In this daily column, we take a look at the latest rumors being churned out by the pro wrestling rumor mill.

Important reminder: Rumors are just that — rumors. None of this has been confirmed as fact, it’s just circulating around the pro wrestling rumor mill. We track rumor accuracy in a weekly feature called Rumor Look Back you can find here. Remember, take it all with a grain of salt.

Rumors for the Day:

  • According to Wrestling Observer Radio’s Dave Meltzer, there are “people close to CM Punk” who were “not happy” with the trios match on Dynamite where The Elite trolled Punk in Chicago.
  • F4WOnline’s Bryan Alvarez claims that even though it looked like Bobby Lashley turned heel earlier this month, he is listed in the babyface column on WWE’s internal roster.
  • Alvarez shot down the rumor that William Regal is leaving AEW to go back to WWE. Speculation spread about Regal’s future after Jon Moxley told Regal to leave and never come back on Dynamite. Alvarez stated that Regal is “gonna be back” and “this was not him leaving AEW.”
  • Meltzer indicated that Thunder Rosa is expected to be back in AEW around February.
  • He added that AEW’s mentality is to use an interim title if the champion is expected to be out “a few months.” But if the champion is going to be out six months or longer, they won’t use an interim title.
  • Per Fightful Select, Scorpio Sky has been cleared to return to the ring for “quite some time,” but AEW creative has nothing for him.

Fortnite players to get Chrome Punk skin for free, check your eligibility

FortniteMares 2022 is finally here and has introduced several new items, game modes, and cosmetics for players to celebrate the Halloween season. From eliminating zombies across the map to escaping them on a Witch’s Broom Mythic, players have long been waiting for what is expected to be a thrilling experience.

Now that the update is finally here, it has also brought several cosmetic collaborations ranging from Rick and Morty’s Summer and Mr. Meeseeks to Evil Dead’s Ash Williams. Additionally, several other survey skins and concept royale skins could also make their way onto the island.

However, for players who are unable to purchase outfits in the item shop due to various reasons, Fortnite has something for everyone in their bag of treats. Players can now get their hands on free outfits and cosmetics if they complete a certain amount of quests during FortniteMares 2022. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

Epic Games recently added new Chrome Punk quests to the game files with the latest Halloween update. As stated, players will have three different tiers of quests to complete before they get their hands on a Chromeseed Backbling, Graveyard Rave loading screen, and Chrome Punk outfit for free.

Here are all the descriptions of the quests and their rewards:

  • Earn 10 Account Levels: Chromeseed Backbling
  • Earn 25 Account Levels: Graveyard Rave Loading Screen
  • Earn 50 Accounts Levels: Chrome Punk Skin

This means players will need to increase their account levels by completing weekly, daily, milestones, and special FortniteMares 2022 quests from the Quest tab. However, players should bear in mind that the account level is different from their XP level, which can be checked by navigating to the Career tab in the game menu.

As of now, there is no end date for the quests, but Epic may make an announcement at a later date. Additionally, Chrome Punk has also been added as an NPC on the map and can be seen roaming the island. The official description for them in the Characters tab reads as follows:

“Hacking and carving a path to victory. Chrome Punk is a renowned pioneer in the underground ‘gourd-core’ music scene. His attitude is unmatched except by his brother, Punk, with whom he had a falling out.”

A few years ago, a similar skin called Punk was released in the item shop. It had a similar structure to that of Chrome Punk and was deemed by the community as above average at best. However, his pickaxe from the set Bash Burner was considered pay-to-win due to its faster swing rate, and was later nerfed by Epic.

FortniteMares 2022 begins today and players will be able to experience horror on the island until November 1 at 2 am ET, when it ends.

Rumor Roundup: AEW optimism on Punk & The Elite, MJF turn, Nakamura NXT

Speculating on the rumors surrounding pro wrestling is a favored pastime of many fans, perhaps second only to actually watching the matches. In this daily column, we take a look at the latest rumors being churned out by the pro wrestling rumor mill.

Important reminder: Rumors are just that — rumors. None of this has been confirmed as fact, it’s just circulating around the pro wrestling rumor mill. We track rumor accuracy in a weekly feature called Rumor Look Back you can find here. Remember, take it all with a grain of salt.

Rumors for the Day:

  • In their report confirming Ace Steel’s release, Fightful Select’s AEW sources said Steel’s exit was a “no brainer decision” and expected it would have happened quickly after All Out if not for the possibility of legal action.
  • That report also says the others involved in the post-PPV brawl are “more in contact” with AEW than they’ve been for a while, but it’s not clear what that entails.
  • Some are taking that, Steel’s release, and this week’s Dynamite showing Punk (in the video package on ROH champs) & mentioning The Elite (Tony Schiavone acknowledging Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks as inaugural Trios champions) for the first time since All Out as signs the investigation could be winding down. There’s even some optimism they could be back soon — although Fightful stressed their sources were “vague” on returns, and possibly missing context from any recent conversations with Punk & The Elite.
  • On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer said MJF doesn’t want to turn babyface.
  • After his appearance on the brand this week, PW Insider reports that Shinsuke Nakamura will make additional appearance on NXT in the weeks ahead.
  • WWE’s filed for some interesting trademarks recently: “Lyra Valkyria” for a wrestler, and “NXT Deadline” for a show.

Rumor Roundup: CM Punk status, injury, possible AEW suspensions, more!

  • There’s a growing rumor, pieced together from multiple outlets like Fightful and the Observer, that CM Punk may be fired by AEW soon.
  • There’s also word going around that Punk suffered an injury, possibly a torn pec, either in the match with Jon Moxley at All Out or during the fight backstage following the infamous media scrum.
  • Dave Meltzer says the current belief is nobody involved in the fight will be at Dynamite this week, with other stars who weren’t originally booked — Chris Jericho and Jon Moxley among them — showing up to replace them.
  • The Wrestling News claims “several AEW personnel who were in the room for the CM Punk/Elite altercation have been suspended.“
  • They also say that Chris Jericho tried to calm everyone down after the initial altercation. Further, Kenny Omega and CM Punk “engaged in talks” later in the evening but it’s “not believed to have been fruitful.”
  • Despite his return on Monday Night Raw, Braun Strowman will be a babyface on the SmackDown roster going forward, per PW Insider.
  • There’s a belief, according to Insider, that Malakai Black, who hinted he might be leaving at All Out, could be taking some time off from pro wrestling, as he’s been “dealing with some personal issues.” He’s been removed from the AEW roster page.

Watch the AEW All Out media scrum: CM Punk snaps, Toni Storm, Chris Jericho, more!

Last night’s (Sun., Sept. 4, 2022) AEW All Out pay-per-view (PPV) in Chicago, Illinois was one hell of a pro wrestling event. CM Punk won the AEW championship from Jon Moxley, MJF made his long awaited return to set up a title match with him, Toni Storm won the interim women’s championship, The Elite became the first ever trios champions, and so much more.

Click here to get a full recap of all the night’s wild events.

Somehow, though, the post-event media scrum may have been even more entertaining. CM Punk straight up snapped when the subject of Colt Cabana came up. He aired out a bunch of dirty laundry, going into detail on all the backstage tension we’ve been hearing about for weeks now.

You can read all about that here, but it’s the kind of thing that needs to be seen. He’s up first in the above video of said scrum.

You’ll also get Toni Storm, who make an interesting remark about Thunder Rosa claiming to be hurt, and Chris Jericho, who talks about what he said at the mandatory company meeting — “don’t leak shit” — and more.

CM Punk doesn’t know what’s going on with his surgically repaired foot

On tonight’s (Aug. 26) episode of Rampage, Tony Khan promised “exclusive backstage footage” of CM Punk following his shocking world title loss to Jon Moxley earlier this week on Dynamite. Punk quickly lost that match after he appeared to re-injure his surgically repaired foot.

Here’s the backstage footage that Khan promised. The exclusive part of it lasts for about 19 seconds:

Punk is in the trainer’s room during the footage. He says he couldn’t put any weight on his foot. He didn’t feel a pop, it felt like his foot just gave out. Punk admits that’s not good, but he doesn’t really know what’s going on.

Reporting indicates that Punk is headed for a rematch with Moxley for the title on Sept. 4 at AEW’s All Out pay-per-view event near CM’s hometown of Chicago, Illinois. Do you think this exclusive footage helps explain how Punk might be able to bounce back so quickly to return to the ring next weekend?

Catch up on the all the results from Rampage right here.
