CNN begins layoffs in what CEO says will be a ‘gut punch’ to the network

New York
CNN Business
 —

CNN on Wednesday informed employees that layoffs had commenced, a move that is expected to impact hundreds of staffers at the global news network and mark the deepest cuts to the organization in years.

Chris Licht, who took over as chief executive of the network in May, described the cuts in an all-staff memo as a “gut punch” to the organization and told employees that “it is incredibly hard to say goodbye to any one member of the CNN team, much less many.”

Employees at the company had been anxiously bracing for the layoffs since Licht informed them last month that “unsettling” changes lie ahead.

Licht said that on Wednesday the company would notify a “limited number of individuals,” largely paid contributors, that they have been let go. He said the company “will notify impacted employees” on Thursday. Licht said at the conclusion of the cuts he will “follow up with more details.”

“It will be a difficult time for everyone,” Licht candidly said in his memo.

CNN declined to say on Wednesday how many employees precisely would be impacted by the layoffs.

The layoffs come as media companies are being battered by brutal economic headwinds that have taken a bat to the advertising sector. Licht noted in October, when he signaled large cuts were coming, that there is “widespread concern over the global economic outlook” and that CNN “must factor that risk into [its] long-term planning.”

Other media organizations have also cut costs as they work to best position themselves for the stormy economic climate. Disney

(DIS) said last week the company needed to restructure, and AMC Networks

(AMCX)announced Tuesday that it would cut 20% of its staff. Social media companies such as Facebook

(FB)-parent Meta, which also rely on advertising revenue, have also executed layoffs in recent months.

CNN, which still posts profits in the hundreds of millions of dollars, was spared from the cuts that wreaked havoc on the industry during the pandemic. Prior to this year, the last major cuts to occur at the organization were in 2018 when less than 50 people lost their jobs as the company restructured its digital business.

The cuts to the organization also come after CNN’s former parent company, WarnerMedia, merged earlier this year with Discovery, creating a media juggernaut laced with billions of dollars in debt and a need to slash costs across the board. The merger had just been completed in April when the company announced it was shuttering streaming service CNN+ a month after it was launched

David Zaslav, chief executive of Warner Bros. Discovery, the company that was formed when WarnerMedia and Discovery became one, has promised investors that he will find more than $3 billion in savings in the combined organization.

After Licht took over as head of CNN, he conducted a months-long review of the business. That review led to him identifying changes that should be made, Licht said in October. Some of those changes have already been implemented, as CNN has made smaller cuts to parts of its business in the last several months.

Licht said in his all-staff memo on Wednesday that employees affected by this week’s cuts will be notified “through an in-person meeting or via Zoom, depending on your location.”

“In those meetings, you will receive information specific to you about notice period or any severance that would apply, and your anticipated last day,” Licht said. “I want to be clear that everyone who is bonus eligible will still receive their 2022 bonuses, which are determined by company performance.”

Licht acknowledged that the cuts will “affect both our departing colleagues and those who remain” and promised to provide employees “resources designed to support” them.

“Let’s take care of each other this week,” Licht said.

Draymond Green vows to fix himself after punch, but Warriors appear skeptical

SAN FRANCISCO — Draymond Green spent nearly 40 minutes Saturday expressing contrition for his latest outburst, acknowledging he is a prisoner of his emotions and vowing to search for composure.

This would be refreshing if it weren’t a theme with which the Warriors are all too familiar.

That is the problem. Draymond is a repeat offender, and each offense erodes his status as a leader.

“I am a very flawed human being,” Green said. “I personally know those flaws better than anyone. The work that I’ve done to correct those flaws has been tremendous, and yet there’s still a very long way to go. That’s a constant work in progress. I’m a constant work in process.”

The Warriors have heard similar remarks. They heard them in 2016, after Draymond wanted a piece of coach Steve Kerr in that infamous halftime disturbance in Oklahoma City. Heard them again 21 months later, after Draymond spewed vitriol in a public quarrel with teammate Kevin Durant. There eventually was an apology, but Draymond undoubtedly realized the incident not only hurt the team but represented a breach of trust.

And here we are, almost four years later, with Draymond throwing and landing a punch to the face of smaller teammate Jordan Poole during a preseason practice Wednesday. The only luck the Warriors can find in this incident is that each man, crucial to the success of the team, avoided serious injury.

“From a human being standpoint, from a personal standpoint, I have some things to fix,” Green said. “And I’m going to fix those things.”

How far, though, can trust be bent and twisted before it breaks?

The Warriors are grappling with that question and will be for as long as Draymond is on the roster. They’re wondering if the “mutual” decision for him to remain out of sight indefinitely — the word suspension was not used — will make a difference upon his return. They’re also wondering if their previous tolerance of out-of-pocket behavior from a player of such unique value makes them complicit in this eruption of brutality.

Which ought to lead everybody at or near the top of the franchise — from CEO Joe Lacob to president/general manager Bob Myers to coach Steve Kerr — to a deeper and more ominous question: How far are we willing to stretch our principles in pursuit of victory?

And Draymond, feeling every bit of the distress, conceded nothing he can say will matter as nearly as much as what he does.

“You apologize with words,” he said. “But, ultimately, your actions show your apologies. I’ve apologized with my words to my team and to Jordan. And now I will allow my actions to show my apology.”

Kerr’s body language all but shouted skepticism. When I asked Kerr if he felt trust had been compromised, he paused briefly before uttering two words heavy with implication: “No comment.”

When I asked Kerr if Draymond, being a veteran, could simply slide back into the lineup without the need for much of a training camp, his response was more perplexing: “Speculation.”

That’s where the Warriors are, where Draymond’s history has put them as well as him. Whether it’s barking at referees or beefing with teammates or, in this instance, balling up a fist and firing, his emotions control him better than he contains them.

“Hurt people hurt people,” he said. “I was in a very contentious space that morning, dealing with some things that are very near and dear to me. And I hurt someone because I was in a place of hurt. For that, I have apologized.

“You apologize with words, but, ultimately, your actions show your apologies. I’ve apologized with my words to my team and to Jordan. And now I will allow my actions to show my apology.”

Draymond said he apologized not only to JP but also to his parents and family. He sounded sincere. Most of what he said seemed genuine. But the pattern has yet to change. Emotional outburst, apology, chase a championship. Repeat.

The Warriors would love to believe this is the last of these tirades, that Draymond will come back with detectably better emotional balance while still retaining the passion that makes him a great player.

At the moment, there is no rational reason to be confident that wish will come true.

“We’ll see,” Kerr said. “Things will play out. There’s no predicting anything. Things have to play out. You just keep moving forward.”

Video shows unruly passenger punch attendant during LAX-bound flight

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — A passenger was arrested after video captured him punching a flight attendant during a flight from Mexico to Los Angeles Wednesday.

Video of the mid-air assault showed the passenger punch the flight attendant in the back of the head while they were in the aisle.

A 30-second video posted on social media showed the flight attendant appearing to talk to the passenger before he turned his back. The suspect then walks toward the attendant and punches him before walking away.

The incident happened on American Airlines Flight 377. That flight was destined to land at Los Angeles International Airport after taking off from Cabo San Lucas.

Footage captured the stunned reaction from other passengers on the plane.

A passenger on the plane told Eyewitness News that the flight attendant didn’t appear to be seriously injured and no one else on the flight was hurt. The witness, named Kevin, added that the suspect was restrained by other passengers and his hands were zip tied.

Before the assault, Kevin said the suspect began to whisper and said “There are 10 killers on the plane.”

“About that time the female flight attendant heard this and ran him back into coach. He sat there for a few, and then the male flight attendant went back there and confronted the guy,” Kevin said. “And the part of the video you see with him getting hit in the back of the head is him turning around, coming back to the front of the plane, and the guy just jumped up and hit him.”

The unruly passenger was arrested by law enforcement when the plane landed at LAX.

American Airlines said in a statement regarding the attack that acts of violence against crew members will not be tolerated.

“The individual involved in this incident will never be allowed to travel with us in the future, and we will work closely with law enforcement in their investigation,” the statement said.

“We thank our crew for their quick action and professionalism to ensure the safety of their fellow team members and customers on board. Our thoughts are with our injured flight attendant, and we are ensuring that they and their fellow crew members have the support they need at this time.”
