First on CNN: New Mexico AG probing campaign finances of GOP candidate accused of orchestrating shootings

CNN
 —

New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez’ office is taking the lead in probing the campaign finances of Solomon Peña, who police say was behind a spate of shootings at Democratic officials’ homes.

The move comes after Albuquerque police said they were investigating whether Peña’s campaign was funded in part by cash from narcotics sales that were laundered into campaign contributions.

“We have formally opened an investigation into the campaign finances,” Lauren Rodriguez, a spokesperson for the attorney general’s office, told CNN.

Peña, a Republican and vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump who lost a state House race in 2022, is accused of hiring and conspiring with four men to shoot at the homes of two state legislators and two county commissioners.

He was arrested Monday and is due to appear in district court on January 23 for a hearing that will determine whether he is detained or released with conditions.

The Albuquerque Police Department said in a statement that investigators believe Peña “identified individuals to funnel contributions from an unknown source to his legislative campaign.”

“Detectives are working with other law enforcement agencies to determine whether the money for the campaign contributions was generated from narcotics trafficking, and whether campaign laws were violated,” the department said in the statement.

Campaign finance records show the single largest contributor to Peña’s campaign was José Trujillo, a man who police say Peña recruited to be part of the team of shooters.

Police say Trujillo, who donated $5,155 to Peña’s failed campaign and listed his occupation as “cashier,” was arrested on January 3 – the night of the last of four shootings – on an outstanding felony warrant.

A Bernalillo County sheriff’s deputy found Trujillo with more than $3,000 in cash, nearly 900 narcotics pills worth roughly $15,000 and two guns, one of which was ballistically matched to that day’s shooting, police said. He was stopped driving Peña’s car, said a law enforcement official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

Albuquerque investigators are focused on Trujillo’s large campaign contributions and whether they might have come from drug money, because investigators say Trujillo has no known legitimate source of income and was arrested with drugs and money, the law enforcement official said. In an assault case in which Trujillo was the victim last fall, police records say Trujillo told police he was between homes at the time.

“You have a suspected gunman who claims to be homeless with $3,000 dollars in cash and a bag of drugs making big donations to a campaign. You have to ask yourself where that money is coming from,” said the law enforcement official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Trujillo’s mother, Melanie Griego, donated $4,000, according to campaign finance records. But Griego staunchly denied making any campaign contributions in an interview with the Albuquerque Journal, telling the newspaper she lives on a “monthly income” and doesn’t have thousands of dollars to invest in a political campaign.

CNN reached out to Peña’s and Trujillo’s attorney but did not immediately receive a response.

A criminal complaint in the court case against Peña says that Trujillo, his father Demetrio and his two brothers conspired with the failed Republican candidate to shoot up the homes of four politicians. The four have not been charged, but additional charges are expected in the case.

A law enforcement source said Peña met members of the shooting team he allegedly recruited when he was in prison serving time for his role in a smash-and-grab team that specialized in stealing cars and driving them through the windows of big box stores to steal high-end electronics.

Peña had to obtain state court approval to run for office as a convicted felon. The state court concluded that under current New Mexico law, Peña was eligible to run because he had served his sentence and completed his parole.

Gunshots were fired into the homes of Bernalillo County Commissioner Adriann Barboa on December 4; incoming state House Speaker Javier Martinez on December 8; then-Bernalillo Commissioner Debbie O’Malley on December 11; and state Sen. Linda Lopez on January 3, according to police.

Peña lost his race to Democratic state Rep. Miguel Garcia 26% to 74%. A week later, he tweeted he “never conceded” the race and was researching his options.

Barboa said, after November’s election but before the shootings, that Peña – who had embraced Trump’s claims of widespread election fraud on social media – had approached some officials at their homes with paperwork he claimed was evidence of election fraud.

“He came to my house after the election. … He was saying that the elections were fake … really speaking erratically. I didn’t feel threatened at the time, but I did feel like he was erratic,” Barboa told “CNN This Morning” on Tuesday.

CNN has reached out to Peña’s campaign website for comment. On Wednesday, his attorney, Roberta Yurcic, said in an email that the allegations against him are “merely accusations.”

“Mr. Peña is presumed innocent of the charges against him,” Yurcic said. “Mr. Peña and I look forward to a full and fair investigation of these claims. I plan to fully defend Mr. Peña and fiercely safeguard his rights throughout this process.”

These lawmakers probing FTX got donations from Bankman-Fried and cronies

Accused crypto crook Sam Bankman-Fried and his FTX associates pumped nearly $95,000 in donations to at least 11 members of the House Financial Services Committee ahead of the 2022 midterm elections, federal records show.

The string of individual campaign donations has raised eyebrows given the 11 lawmakers serve on the committee currently probing last month’s collapse of the FTX crypto exchange.

The majority of contributions were made to Democrats — with New York Rep. Ritchie Torres receiving a total of $35,000 from various FTX-linked donors, according to The Post’s analysis of Federal Election Commission campaign data.

The House Financial Services Committee – which has 53 members total – was set to grill Bankman-Fried at a Tuesday congressional hearing. Their plans were derailed when the shaggy-haired former billionaire was arrested in the Bahamas hours earlier and slapped with a slew of fraud charges.

While Torres has already vowed to donate his FTX-tied campaign coffers to charity, at least one member — Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-MA) — was quick to say he wouldn’t follow suit. Many others, meanwhile, have remained mum.

Here’s a breakdown of the 11 committee members who accepted campaign donations from Bankman-Fried and his associates:

Rep. Richie Torres confirmed he would be donating the funds from Bankman-Fried to charity.

Bankman-Fried personally donated $2,900 directly to the New York Democrat’s campaign, according to the FEC data.

The FTX founder’s brother, Gabriel Bankman-Fried, separately contributed a total of $32,400 to Torres’ campaign and victory fund.

Torres addressed the campaign donation earlier this week, telling CoinDesk it was “unsolicited” and that he was donating the amount.

“My ties to him are minimal,” Torres insisted, adding that Bankman-Fried was a “pathological liar.”

In a statement to The Post, Sophie Pollock, Torres’ communications director, confirmed that the funds were donated to “a local charity.”

The New Jersey congressman received $5,800 in personal donations from Bankman-Fried, records show.

He also received two separate donations — $2,900 each — from FTX executive Mark Wetjen, who previously worked as commissioner of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

A spokesperson from Rep. Gottheimer’s office said he will donate the funds to charity.

Rep. Jake Auchincloss reportedly has no plans to return the tainted funds.

Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-MA)

Auchincloss, who is vice chair of the committee, was the recipient of a $5,800 personal donation from Bankman-Fried. He also received $5,800 from Wetjen.

The Massachusetts Rep. revealed this week he has no plans to return the donations — because the funds were given to other Democrats in more competitive midterm races.

“I’m not going to send money to a guy in a Bahaman jail, that’s for sure. That money is out the door, helping to elect Democrats,” he told Boston radio station WBUR.

Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García also got a campaign donation from the disgraced crypto mogul.

Rep. Jesús ‘Chuy’ García (D-IL)

Bankman-Fried pumped $2,900 into the Illinois Democrat’s re-election campaign.

García’s spokesperson revealed last month that his campaign had already donated the FTX-linked cash to the Northwest Center in Chicago, which focuses on financial literacy.

García’s office did not respond to a request for a comment.

Rep. Cindy Axne (D-IA)

The disgraced FTX founder made two separate donations to the Iowa Democrat’s election campaign.

Axne received $2,900 for the Cindy Axne for Congress and a separate $5,000 donation for her AXNE PAC, according to campaign finance records.

Axne’s office did not respond to a request for a comment.

FTX executive Ryan Salame donated to Rep. Lee Zeldin ahead of midterms.

Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY)

FTX executive Ryan Salame made a $5,800 donation to Zeldin’s campaign ahead of the midterms, records show.

Zeldin’s office did not respond to The Post’s request for a comment.

Rep. Sean Casten (D-IL)

Bankman-Friend’s brother, Gabriel, made two separate donations towards Casten’s campaign — totaling $1,000, according to FEC data.

When reached by Thursday, Casten’s DC office had “no comment at this time.”

Rep. Tom Emmer got handouts from at least two FTX executives.

Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN)

The Minnesota Republican received a handful of donations from at least two FTX executives ahead of the midterms.

His campaign was given a total of $8,700 from Salame and another $2,900 from FTX’s Zach Dexter.

Emmer’s office did not immediately respond to a request for a comment.

Rep. Ted Budd (R-NC)

The North Carolina GOP Representative was the recipient of a $2,900 donation made by Salame, records show.

Budd’s office could not be reached for a comment. An outgoing committee member, he is set to succeed longtime Republican Senator Richard Burr in office on Jan. 3.

A $2,800 donation was made to the Connecticut representative’s campaign by FTX executive Danielle Barrett.

“The contribution we received … was unsolicited and is being donated,” Himes’ campaign manager Francesca Capodilupo said Thursday.

A waiting game

One congressional office that had received a donation from Bankman-Fried, and did not want to be identified, told The Post it was waiting to offload the funds until it was determined where the money legally belonged. It had previously been advised against donating the money to charity in case it was later reclaimed by victims.

Other questionable contributions

Members of the House Financial Services Committee are also not the only politicians with FTX funds in their coffers.

FEC records show that Bankman-Fried alone funneled thousands of dollars to various PACs, as well as campaigns for Reps. Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), Kim Schrier (D-WA), and Angie Craig (D-MA), among others.

CDC probing 180 cases of kids with acute hepatitis of unknown cause

Tami Chappell | Reuters

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now investigating 180 cases of children who suddenly developed severe hepatitis across 36 states and territories, an increase of 71 cases since the public health agency’s last update earlier this month.

The CDC, in a statement Wednesday, said the vast majority are not new cases of hepatitis. Rather, the number of patients under investigation have increased as the agency looks more closely at data that goes back to October of last year.

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that is commonly caused by hepatitis viruses A, B, C, D and E. The cases the CDC is investigating are unusual because the children have not tested positive for those viruses and they have suffered severe symptoms, with 9% requiring liver transplants, which is rare.

The CDC has found at least five deaths, although no fatalities have been reported since February. Adenovirus infection is being investigated as being the possible cause, with nearly half the kids testing positive for the pathogen. Adenovirus is a common virus that normally causes cold or flu-like symptoms. It is not a known cause of hepatitis in otherwise healthy children.

The CDC also is conducting lab tests to see if the Covid virus might also be a possible cause, though the children in the initial cluster in Alabama did not have the coronavirus.

The United Kingdom first alerted the World Health Organization to severe cases of hepatitis in kids last month. The U.K. Health Security Agency, in an update last week, said adenovirus is the most commonly detected virus in the samples tested there. The country has identified 176 cases as of May 10.

The CDC said severe hepatitis in kids remains rare, but told parents to be on the look out for symptoms such as jaundice, which is yellowing of the skin or eyes.

CDC probing 109 liver illnesses in kids, including 5 deaths

U.S. health officials are now looking into more than 100 possible cases of a mysterious and severe liver disease in children, including five deaths. (Steve Allen, Alamy)

Estimated read time: 2-3 minutes

NEW YORK — U.S. health officials are looking into more than 100 possible cases of a mysterious and severe liver disease in children, including five deaths.

About two dozen states reported suspected cases after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention put out a call for doctors to be on the lookout for surprising cases of hepatitis. The cases date back to late October in children under 10. So far, only nine cases in Alabama have been confirmed.

“We are casting a wide net to broaden our understanding,” the CDC’s Dr. Jay Butler said Friday.

What’s causing the illnesses isn’t clear. Adenovirus was detected in half the children, “but we do not know if it is the cause,” he said.

There are dozens of adenoviruses, many of them associated with cold-like symptoms, fever, sore throat and pink eye. But some versions can trigger other problems, including inflammation in the stomach and intestines. Officials are exploring a link to one particular version that’s normally associated with gut inflammation.

U.S. health officials haven’t seen evidence of an unusually large wave of adenovirus infections, although many doctors don’t usually test for it.

This week, the World Health Organization officials said they had reports of almost 300 probable cases in 20 countries.

In the U.S., most of the children were toddlers, nearly all were hospitalized and eight received liver transplants

“It’s still a very rare occurrence,” Butler said. “A majority of these cases have recovered and recovered fully.”

The mystery goes back to November, when Alabama health officials began looking into the first of nine cases of severe hepatitis in children in that state. None tested positive for the viruses that commonly cause hepatitis. However, testing was positive for adenovirus.

Butler said none of the Alabama children were vaccinated against COVID-19. That has been ruled out as a possible cause, “and we hope this information helps clarify some of the speculation circulating online.”

Symptoms of hepatitis, or inflammation of the liver, include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, light-colored stools, joint pain and jaundice.

In addition to Alabama, the states reporting suspected cases: California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin. Puerto Rico also reported at least one case.

Donald Trump attacks Mitch McConnell after he criticizes RNC censure of two House Republicans probing Jan. 6 insurrection

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Feb. 8 criticized the RNC for censuring GOP Reps. Liz Cheney (Wyo.) and Adam Kinzinger (Ill.). (The Washington Post)

Trump’s statement, in which he continued to repeat false claims about election fraud, came a day after McConnell became the highest-ranking Republican elected official to criticize the RNC for the resolution censuring Reps. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) for serving on the House panel investigating attack on the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob.

Pushing back against language in the RNC resolution that described the committee’s work as “a persecution of ordinary citizens engaged in legitimate political discourse,” McConnell described the attack as a “violent insurrection for the purpose of trying to prevent the peaceful transfer of power.”

“The issue is whether or not the RNC should be sort of singling out members of our party who may have different views from the majority. That’s not the job of the RNC,” he said.

In his statement, Trump attacked McConnell on several unrelated issues as well, saying he had not done enough to counter the Biden administration on “the invasion of our Borders,” “rising Inflation,” “Unconstitutional mandates” and the “incompentent (sic) Afghanistan withdrawal.”

Trump then took a shot at McConnell for not intervening to try to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

“If Mitch would have fought for the election, like the Democrats would have if in the same position, we would not be discussing any of the above today, and our Country would be STRONG and PROUD instead of weak and embarrassed,” Trump said.

The back-and-forth between Trump and McConnell underscored fissures between the two men as well as between factions of the Republican Party that they represent.

The broader divide was on display Wednesday as the Republican Governors Association unveiled a television ad, with a reported $500,000 buy, backing Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R).

The Republican incumbent faces a primary challenge from David Perdue, the former U.S. senator who was lured into the race by Trump. Trump is heavily featured in Perdue’s first television ad, in which Trump criticizes Kemp for not intervening to overturn the presidential election results in Georgia.

The RGA ad makes no mention of Perdue, instead promoting Kemp as a “conservative leader fighting back” against policies of the Biden administration.

“Kemp cut taxes, creating one of America’s fastest growing economies and good-paying jobs,” the narrator says.

Democrats, meanwhile, are reveling in the intraparty fighting between pro-Trump Republicans and the establishment wing of the GOP.

“Grab your popcorn and get ready,” Democratic National Committee spokesman Hyma Moore said in a statement in which he described the RGA as being “at war with Donald Trump.”

“Georgia Republicans know a little about messy intraparty fights and this primary is already a disaster,” Moore said. “Donald Trump’s stranglehold on the Republican Party ensures that regardless of which Republican survives this primary, Georgia Republicans are guaranteed to have a rough time.”

U.S. probing fatal Tesla crash that killed pedestrian

WASHINGTON, Sept 3 (Reuters) – U.S. auto safety regulators are investigating a July 26 fatal crash in New York involving a Tesla (TSLA.O)vehicle that might have been using an advanced driver assistance system, they disclosed on Friday.

New York City police confirmed on Friday an ongoing investigation into the July 26 death of a 52-year-old man attempting to fix a flat tire on his vehicle on the Long Island Expressway when he was struck by a Tesla.

A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) spokeswoman told Reuters on Friday the agency was aware of the “July 26 incident involving a Tesla vehicle on the Long Island Expressway in New York, and has launched a Special Crash Investigation team to investigate the crash.”

NHTSA’s probe into the New York crash was first reported by Reuters.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The U.S. investigations come amid increased scrutiny of Tesla’s Autopilot and other driver assistance systems. Tesla’s Autopilot handles some driving tasks and allows drivers to keep their hands off the wheel for extended periods.

Last month, NHTSA said it opened a formal safety probe into Autopilot after 11 crashes involving Tesla models and emergency vehicles.

On Wednesday, NHTSA identified a 12th crash involving a Tesla vehicle using an advanced driver assistance system that struck an emergency vehicle in Orlando, Florida.

On Friday, NHTSA released an updated list of special crash investigation crashes that it is reviewing, in which advanced driver assistance systems are suspected of being used including the New York crash involving a 2021 Tesla Model Y as well as a crash in Florida.

NHTSA has opened 33 investigations into Tesla crashes involving 11 deaths since 2016, in which use of advanced driver assistance systems was suspected. NHTSA has ruled out Autopilot use in three of those non-fatal crashes.
