Samsung bets on MicroLED and 8K for its premium 2023 TVs

Four years after introducing The Wall at CES 2018, Samsung is poised to take its MicroLED technology mainstream. At CES 2023, the company announced it would offer 50-, 63-, 76-, 89-, 101-, 114- and 140-inch MicroLED models, greatly expanding the amount of choice consumers have when it comes to the new display technology. Samsung didn’t provide pricing and availability information for the expanded line, but the company claims the new models are its most affordable MicroLED TVs to date. Since a few of the sets are smaller than any of the MicroLED TVs Samsung has offered in the past, you also won’t need to pay for a professional to install them in your home.

Samsung claims its MicroLED line will set the standard for picture quality in 2023. And judging from the 76-inch model’s topline features, that’s not a mere boast from the company. The set sports a 240Hz variable refresh rate and 2-nanosecond response time. It also offers 20-bit black detail for “intense” contrast.

Samsung

Samsung is also promising upgrades for its Neo QLED sets, starting with the line’s new flagship. The QN900C features an 8K Quantum MiniLED-lit panel capable of maxing out at 4,000 nits of brightness. As with Samsung’s 2022 Neo QLED sets, the QN900C features a 14-bit backlight. However, the TV offers even better contrast thanks to a tweak the company made to its 8K Real Depth Enhancer Pro software. Samsung is also promising improved picture quality when viewing older movies and TV shows thanks to the inclusion of its new Auto HDR Remastering algorithm, which can automatically apply HDR effects to standard dynamic range content.

For those who would prefer a 4K set, there’s also the QN935C. Samsung’s new 4K flagship features a redesigned power board that eliminates the need for an external connection box and allows for bezels that are less than 20mm thick. The QN935C also features top-firing speakers, allowing the set to produce Dolby Atmos sound without a dedicated soundbar. You can use both the QN900C and QN935C as a smart home hub thanks to the fact Samsung’s entire 2023 Neo QLED line will feature built-in Zigbee and Matter Thread all-in-one modules.

Engadget

Last year’s CES saw Samsung launch its new QD-OLED technology. This year, the company is expanding the line to offer additional models, including an all-new 77-inch model. As previously announced, the 2023 QD-OLED TV line will offer up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness thanks to the inclusion of Samsung’s new “HyperEfficient EL” OLED material and IntelliSense AI. Samsung says its latest panels are also more energy efficient and support 144Hz refresh rates. Additionally, the company has gone out of its way to get the panels AMD FreeSync Premium Pro certified. Samsung didn’t announce pricing and availability for its QD-OLED line. Expect those details to come in the coming weeks.

Game Files Suggest A Potential Destiny 2 Premium Monthly Subscription Service

Destiny is and always has been a game with annual expansions since its release in 2014, with smaller expansions (House of Wolves, Warmind, etc) releasing in between. However, with the launch of Destiny 2’s first major expansion — Forsaken, Bungie changed the model from two smaller expansions to seasons, releasing a total of four seasons per year. And now, it looks like the developer is experimenting with a premium subscription service for the game, as some references are found in the game files.

It appears that Bungie was testing a monthly subscription model (similar to games like Final Fantasy XIV) for Destiny 2’s upcoming Lightfall expansion and season 20 which was later scrapped(?) for some reason, uncovered in the game files. Elliott over in the D2 Datamines Discord server shared some file strings with TGP that feature four types of subscriptions for the game.

  • season_20datasubscription_upsell_month1_ad_banner_000_004.v2.tif
  • season_20datasubscription_upsell_month3_ad_banner_000_005.v2.tif
  • season_20datasubscription_upsell_month6_ad_banner_000_006.v2.tif
  • season_20datasubscription_upsell_month12_ad_banner_000_007.v2.tif

As we can see, this clearly suggests that at some point there was a subscription service planned for Lightfall and season 20. The file description says that the subscription model would include “Lightfall, two new dungeons and raids, 1 month of premium content in Destiny 2 Year 6, a new Exotic Sparrow, Quicksilver Storm catalyst and ornament, and Rahool’s Secret Stash: four Exotic accessories and premium materials pack delivered throughout Year 6″.

“Enhance your journey as a New Light with a premium subscription to Destiny 2. Try out the first missions and destinations from Destiny 2: Lightfall, The Witch Queen, Beyond Light and Shadowkeep for free.”

“Prevent the apocalypse by racing Emperor Calus to the edge of the solar system. Brave a new campaign and master Strand, a new subclass. Pre-order now to instantly unlock Quicksilver Storm Exotic weapon and exclusive bonuses.”

We don’t know when this was added in the game files but considering it’s for Lightfall and season 20, the best guess is with the launch of Season of Plunder, after the Lightfall showcase event.

Now, even with some direct references to a Destiny 2 subscription service in the game files, we don’t know if this will come to fruition by The Final Shape, or if this is something Bungie plans on adding to the next saga of Destiny. In short, take it with a grain of salt.

As of right now, Bungie has not announced any sort of Destiny 2 premium subscription model for Lightfall or Year 6 in general. The community has been asking for a seasonal revamp in Destiny 2 due to its repetitive level grinding, power creep, and vendor upgrades for months now.

Destiny 2’s Season of the Seraph is going in full swing right now, with its third exotic Revision Zero, now available as part of the new exotic mission that went live earlier this week.

Story Of Seasons: A Wonderful Life Will Have Physical Edition, Goat Plushie Premium Edition

Image: Nintendo Life

Pre-orders will soon be open for Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life, a remake of the Harvest Moon GameCube game that’s due out in summer 2023.

The game will also be available on Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series S|X as both a physical and digital edition, and a Premium Edition will also be available that includes a retail copy of the game, a 3.5-inch-tall goat plushie, and a cloth poster in a custom box, with box art by series illustrator Igusa Matsuyama.

Image: Marvelous XSEED

The standalone retail edition will cost $49.99 on all platforms, and the Premium Edition will cost $59.99. Pre-orders will be made available on the Marvelous XSEED website, which will inform you where you can purchase the game.

Currently, these pre-orders seem to be limited to USA and Canada, but we’ll let you know if that changes — although Europe and Australia have their own pre-orders open here, with an arguably much worse Limited Edition that includes stickers, a poster, and a notebook.

Will you be pre-ordering A Wonderful Life, or have you been burned too many times on the Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons fire? Tell us in the comments!

PlayStation Black Friday 2022 sale discounts PS Plus, Extra, Premium by 25%

Sony has launched its PlayStation Black Friday deals, and the headline saving is 25% off 12-month subscriptions to PlayStation Plus, across all three of its tiers.

  • PlayStation Plus Essential, which unlocks online multiplayer and provides a few free games each month, is discounted to $44.99 from $59.99 for the year.
  • PlayStation Plus Extra, which grants access to a large Game Catalog of PS4 and PS5 games, costs $74.99 (discounted from $99.99) for a 12-month subscription.
  • PlayStation Plus Premium, which adds cloud streaming (including a catalog of PS3 games), a small number of classic PlayStation games from earlier eras, and trials of new releases, costs $89.99 for 12 months, down from $119.99.

Sony said the plans could be stacked, so players can buy several years’ worth of Plus at the discounted prices if they want to.

Among the other savings on the PlayStation Store, there were deep discounts to a few high-profile games (note that you need to be logged in to see the discounts):

In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Sony detailed further savings available, including $25 off DualSense PS5 controllers at participating retailers and direct from PlayStation, and discounts on merch at the PlayStation Gear Store.

PS Plus Extra, Premium Games for November 2022 Announced

Ooo swapping Greedfall (a game I would have played) for Skyrim (a game I would have bought) I can take that, as I’m one of the few RPG/open world lovers who is yet to play Skyrim, and I couldn’t work out whether to buy the anniversary edition or just the PS5 updated special edition, so this solves that for me.

And as usual Extra good, premium bad. Day one, it was obvious. Which is why my console will still say “update to premium for £10 more” if I want any trials or streaming, I would, but as of yet I think it was just a tier to lure people to wanting the best sounding version when Extra had all the real value. Sure you get the upgrade fees worth if you are already extra converting to premium, but if you bought premium for a year as its own service, or for classics, you were shafted quite badly.

A quick Skyrim question should I play this on PS5, PS4 pro, or just buy it and play it on a good PC/laptop? Is it a good console game, and which console is it best on? Are the PS5 optimisations worth it etc?
