Teams have begun calling Eagles on potential trade for Carson Wentz

With Matthew Stafford off the trade block and headed to the Rams, the eyes of QB-hungry general managers have turned to another QB who could be available: Carson Wentz.

Sources say that teams have begun calling the Eagles on their former starter Wentz, plotting a roadmap for a potential trade as teams get closer to the start of the league year.

The Eagles are not in a hurry to trade Wentz — and in fact as of now intend for him to return for 2021 under new coach Nick Sirianni — but they did field the calls and discussed the issue. GM Howie Roseman will almost always listen, and this is no different.

While Stafford went to the Rams (in principle) in exchange for two future first-round picks, a third-rounder and Jared Goff, it’s unclear what the price would be for Wentz. But it would have to be enough to make it worth it for the Eagles to trade someone who would otherwise factor heavily into their starting QB conversation.

As for teams interested in Wentz, the Colts are always linked to him because of their need at QB and because of coach Frank Reich. They will call on all the available passers this offseason. There are others.

Wentz signed a four-year, $128 million extension in June of 2019, and because of the way it’s structured, a release is nearly impossible. But a trade before his $10 million roster bonus is due on March 19 would give the Eagles a more manageable dead money charge of $33.8 million, while a new team would take on $25.4 million in salary — and a four-year, $98.4 million existing contract.

Wentz and his agents have not yet formally requested a trade, according to sources, though it’s clear his relationship with the team has been strained over the past year and it will require more communication to mend it. The team’s firing of Doug Pederson, who benched Wentz in favor of Jalen Hurts this season, did not quell all of Wentz’s concerns, sources say.

With Stafford and Goff off the table, the supply of veteran QBs actually available dwindled rapidly, perhaps increasing Wentz’s value. About his quarterbacks recently, Sirianni said he has two “top-notch” QBs in Wentz and Hurts.

Asked if Wentz will be on the roster in 2021, Sirianni said: “I can’t answer that.”

Sirianni said this week in an interview with SportsRadio 94 WIP in Philly the team is planning for open competition at all positions, including quarterback. That would seem to indicate it’ll be Wentz vs. Hurts in training camp — if Wentz is still a member of the team.

New strains of coronavirus create potential for spring surge, Utah doctors say

MURRAY — If coronavirus variants now spreading throughout the United States become dominant strains, health experts fear the potential for a springtime surge.

That’s why the speed of the vaccine campaign and public health protective measures are so important.

On Jan. 15, the Utah Department of Health confirmed the first case of the B.1.1.7 COVID-19 variant in Utah, referred to as the “U.K. variant,” through ongoing genetic sequencing of positive COVID-19 samples.

According to Dr. Eddie Stenehjem, an infectious disease doctor at Intermountain Healthcare, Utahns need to keep up the personal protective measures until the vaccine makes an impact.

“From an epidemiology standpoint, we are moving in the right direction, and we need to make sure that we keep doing what we’re doing,” said Stenehjem.

While Utah’s critical COVID-19 numbers are currently headed in the right direction, Stenehjem said the variants could change that.

“It’s definitely a concern of ours to be really monitoring this current situation with the viral variants,” he said. “It just emphasizes the fact that we need to get vaccines out because it looks like the vaccines are protective against these variants.”

It’s a race to get the vaccines out faster than the variants can spread.

We are on a good track right now, as long as people continue to mask up, limit their contacts and don’t gather in large groups.

An updated COVID-19 forecast from the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, that includes the highly transmissible variants, shows the potential for an additional 25,000 deaths over the next three months. Researchers project a total of 160,000 more deaths before May 1.

The U.K. strain has now been detected in 33 states, including Utah.

“If it was a predominant mode of infection here in Utah, I think we would know about it at this point because of the amount that they are sequencing,” said Stenehjem.

While state health officials continue to track the strains, Stenehjem said we need to keep protecting ourselves.

“We are on a good track right now, as long as people continue to mask up, limit their contacts and don’t gather in large groups,” he said.

If Utah can get vaccines out quickly, he said, and get more of our communities protected, then we can worry less about the variant strains.

Latest On Potential Nolan Arenado Trade

Colorado and St. Louis seem to be on the verge of a major trade centering on star Colorado third baseman Nolan Arenado, but it’s not yet clear whether the deal will go through as early as Monday night. The swap still hasn’t been submitted for approval to the union and the league office, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, who adds that “it will take at least another day, if not longer” to become official. On the other hand, though, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post tweets that all parties could sign off on it sometime tonight.

Regardless of whether this trade takes place Monday, it does appear it’s going to happen. According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, the Rockies and Cardinals had “intense moments” during negotiations this past weekend, but the blockbuster is still likely to go through by Tuesday. Furthermore, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes that the Cardinals are optimistic the transaction will occur.

Because of the complicated financial hoops the teams have to jump through to complete this trade (Colorado is set to absorb $50MM of Arenado’s remaining money), it remains unclear whom the Rockies will receive in return for the longtime face of their franchise. But Arenado – who has a no-trade clause – seems eager to head to St. Louis, as he has given his written consent for a trade to the Cardinals, Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports reports. Arenado is in line to receive an extra year and another $15MM tacked on to the six seasons and $199MM on his Colorado contract if the Cards do acquire him.

Apple Elaborates on Potential for iPhone 12 and MagSafe Accessories to Interfere With Implantable Medical Devices

Since the launch of iPhone 12 models in October, Apple has acknowledged that the devices may cause electromagnetic interference with medical devices like pacemakers and defibrillators, but the company has now shared additional information.

Apple added the following paragraph to a related support document today:

Medical devices such as implanted pacemakers and defibrillators might contain sensors that respond to magnets and radios when in close contact. To avoid any potential interactions with these devices, keep your iPhone and MagSafe accessories a safe distance away from your device (more than 6 inches / 15 cm apart or more than 12 inches / 30 cm apart if wirelessly charging). But consult with your physician and your device manufacturer for specific guidelines.

While the support document already mentioned “MagSafe accessories” in the title, Apple has further emphasized that accessories like the MagSafe Charger and MagSafe Duo Charger may also interfere with medical devices:

All MagSafe accessories (each sold separately) also contain magnets—and MagSafe Charger and MagSafe Duo Charger contain radios. These magnets and electromagnetic fields might interfere with medical devices.

Apple continues to state that while all iPhone 12 models contain more magnets than prior iPhone models, they are “not expected to pose a greater risk of magnetic interference to medical devices than prior iPhone models.”

Earlier this month, an article in the Heart Rhythm Journal indicated that iPhone 12 models can “potentially inhibit lifesaving therapy in a patient” due to magnetic interference with implantable medical devices. Three doctors in Michigan tested this interaction by holding an iPhone 12 near a patient’s implantable cardioverter defibrillator, which immediately went into a “suspended” state for the duration of the test, according to the article.

“We hereby bring an important public health issue concerning the newer generation iPhone 12 which can potentially inhibit lifesaving therapy in a patient particularly while carrying the phone in upper pockets,” the doctors wrote. “Medical device manufacturers and implanting physicians should remain vigilant in making patients aware of this significant interaction of the iPhone 12 and other smart wearables with their cardiac implantable electronic devices.”

The article in the Heart Rhythm Journal was first surfaced by Brazilian website MacMagazine.

Apple provides more information in the “Important safety information for iPhone” section of the iPhone User Guide.
