2023 NFL playoff schedule, bracket: Dates, times, TV, streaming for every round of NFC and AFC postseason

Super Wild Card Weekend has lived up to its name and that’s because the opening round of the NFL playoffs has given us several super wild games so far.

The Sunday action kicked off in Buffalo, where the Bills almost became one of the biggest upset victims in NFL history. The Bills, who were favored by 14 points, were able to escape with a 34-31 win that will allow them to advance to the divisional round for the third straight year.

There was also a lot of drama on Saturday, and most that went down in Jacksonville during a game where the Jaguars came back from a 27-point deficit to stun the Chargers, 31-30. Trevor Lawrence threw four interceptions during a first half where the Jaguars fell behind 27-0, but he played nearly perfect football after that. The 27-point comeback was the third-largest in NFL postseason history.

The 49ers also advanced on Saturday with a 41-23 win over the Seahawks.

Although three games are now in the books for the wild-card round, there are still three more to go, so buckle up and get ready.

With that in mind, here’s a look at the entire postseason schedule. (And don’t forget, there could be a neutral site AFC title game this year: If the Bills and Chiefs end up playing each other in the AFC Championship Game, then the game will be played in Atlanta.)

Super Wild Card Weekend

Saturday, Jan. 14

  • (2) 49ers 41-23 over (7) Seahawks. The 49ers got a brief scare from the Seahawks on a day where Seattle jumped put to a 17-16 halftime lead. But in the second half, San Francisco broke the game open with a dominating performance. Brock Purdy threw for 332 yards while also becoming the first rookie in NFL history to total four touchdowns in a playoff game. (Purdy finished with three passing touchdowns and one rushing score).
  • (4) Jaguars 31-30 over (5) Chargers. The Jaguars won this game by pulling off one of the biggest comebacks in NFL history. The Jags fell behind, 27-0, early in the game due in large part to four interceptions from Trevor Lawrence, but they rebounded to pull off the stunning win, thanks in large part to Lawrence, who threw four touchdown passes.

Sunday, Jan. 15

  • (2) Bills 34-31 over (7) Dolphins. The Dolphins went into this game as the biggest underdog in the history of the wild-card round (+14) and despite those odds, they were still able to put a major scare into the Bills. In the end, the Bills were able to win this game thanks to Josh Allen (352 passing yards, three touchdowns) and a defense that came up with multiple big plays, including two turnovers, four sacks and a fourth-down stop that iced the game with just 2:30 left to play.
  • (6) Giants at (3) Vikings (-3), 4:30 p.m. ET (Fox, stream on fuboTV). These two played one of the wildest games of the season on Christmas Eve in a matchup that wasn’t decided until Greg Joseph hit a 61-yard field goal on the final play. This will be Minnesota’s first home playoff game since the Minneapolis Miracle in January 2018.
  • (6) Ravens at (3) Bengals (-8), 8:15 p.m. ET (NBC, stream on fuboTV). It’s not clear if Lamar Jackson (knee) is going to play on Sunday, but even if he does, it will mark his first action in six weeks if he’s on the field. Jackson did lead the Ravens to a 19-17 win over the Bengals back in Week 5, but the Bengals got their revenge with a 27-16 win in Week 18 to get a split of the season series.

Monday, Jan. 16

  • (5) Cowboys at (4) Buccaneers (+2.5), 8:15 p.m. ET (ABC/ESPN, stream on fuboTV). If the Cowboys are going to advance to the divisional round, they’re going to have to do something they’ve never done: Beat Tom Brady. The Cowboys are 0-7 all time against the Buccaneers QB and that includes a Week 1 loss where Tampa Bay topped Dallas 19-3.

Divisional Round

Saturday, Jan. 21 and Sunday, Jan. 22

NFC

  • Giants/Buccaneers/Cowboys at (1) Eagles
  • Vikings/Buccaneers/Cowboys at (2) 49ers

If the Giants beat the Vikings on Sunday, they’ll play the Eagles, which will leave the 49ers hosting the winner of Cowboys-Buccaneers. If the Vikings win, they’ll play the 49ers while the Eagles will host the winner of Cowboys- Buccaneers. Which ever team hosts the winner of Cowboys-Buccaneers will definitely be playing on Sunday, Jan. 22.

AFC

  • Jaguars/Ravens at (1) Chiefs
  • Jaguars/Bengals at (2) Bills

If the Bengals beat the Ravens, then Cincinnati will travel to Buffalo in the divisional round and Jacksonville will head to Kansas City. On the other hand, if the Ravens win, then Baltimore will travel to Kansas City and Jacksonville will head to Buffalo.

The NFL will announce the divisional round schedule at some point during the wild-card round.

Championship Sunday

Jan. 29

  • NFC Championship, 3:05 p.m. ET (Fox)
  • AFC Championship, 6:40 p.m. ET (CBS)

Super Bowl LVII

Feb. 12

AFC Champion vs. NFC Champion at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, 6:30 p.m. ET (Fox)

2023 NFL playoffs: New postseason overtime rules means it’s better to give than receive

The NFL is about to embark on its first postseason with the new overtime rules, and coaches who win the toss will now likely weigh whether to take the unusual step of kicking off to the opponent in overtime.

The league changed its overtime rules this past offseason in large part due to the ending of the Bills-Chiefs divisional round game. The Chiefs won 42-36 after winning the coin toss in overtime and scoring first, meaning Josh Allen and the Bills offense never touched the ball in the overtime period.

For the playoffs only, both teams must have the opportunity to possess the ball. Gone are the days of winning the toss, scoring a touchdown and ending the game.

And that should change a coach’s approach to strategy. Being guaranteed an offensive possession in overtime should lead coaches to have their captain defer should he win the overtime coin toss.

Kicking off to the opponent would allow the toss-winning team the opportunity to know exactly what it needs to win or extend the game. It would also give the team the opportunity to end the game with a defensive score. And it would very likely give the team better starting field position via a defensive stop and ensuing punt over the kickoff

Winning the toss and electing to kick is what’s almost always done in college football. But even then, you’re guaranteed to start your offensive possession at the 25-yard line. Winning and kicking in NFL overtime would (very likely) give the toss-winning team the advantage of improved starting field position over the opponent.

Since 2010, there have been 12 overtime playoff games. Teams who won the coin toss are 10-2 in those games, though only seven of the 12 who won the coin toss won on their first possession without the other team possessing the ball.

The league used those numbers — 10-2 and seven out of 12 — to justify the changes to the overtime rules. In reality, it was the breathtaking Bills-Chiefs game that forced the change.

The Chiefs won the overtime coin toss in the AFC title game against the Bengals and still lost the game. In the controversial NFC Championship Game between the Saints and Rams following the 2018 regular season, the Saints won the overtime coin toss and still lost the game.

Of the 12 overtime games since 2010, not once has a team won the overtime coin toss and elected to kick to its opponent. And according to TruMedia, since 2017 only one team has chosen that route in the regular season.

In 2019, Mike Tomlin opted for this in the Steelers’ Week 5 match against the Ravens. Mason Rudolph, who was thrust into the starting role early in the season with an injury to Ben Roethlisberger, suffered a concussion midway through the third quarter and was replaced by Devlin Hodges. The Steelers mustered just six more points for the remainder of regulation.

With strong winds in Pittsburgh and a struggling offense, Tomlin decided to kick to the Ravens and make them play into the wind after winning the OT coin toss. That meant a defensive stop would likely give the Steelers the ball back with better field position and the wind at their backs. Ultimately the Steelers fumbled near midfield after getting the stop and the Ravens made the game-winning 46-yard field goal to win.

The new playoff overtime rules include 15-minute periods instead of the 10-minute overtime period in the regular season. If the team that got the ball first doesn’t score a touchdown, or if the score is tied after each team has possessed the ball, the next score would win. (If the team that possesses the ball first commits a safety on the initial possession, the kickoff team would win.)

Each team will have three timeouts per “half.” Though there aren’t technically halves like in regulation, two overtime periods would be considered a half for all intents and purposes. That also means a two-minute warning would take place toward the end of the second overtime, though it’s highly unlikely a winner wouldn’t be decided by then. There would also be no coaches’ challenges allowed in overtime.

There have been four overtime games since the 2019 season, so the league is averaging more than one a season. Considering the league just witnessed the most games decided by six or fewer points as well as the most games within one score in the fourth quarter, it’s more than possible these overtime rules come into play this postseason.

Tom Brady will continue to re-write the NFL postseason record book in 2023

Getty Images

Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady already owns some of the most significant NFL postseason records, and he’ll add to those records when the Bucs host the Cowboys on Monday night.

Here are a few of the postseason records that Brady owns, and some notes on how far everyone else in the league is from equaling Brady’s records:

Games played: Brady will appear in his 49th career postseason game on Monday. His former kicker Adam Vinatieri is in second place all time, having appeared in 32 career postseason games. Another former Brady kicker, Stephen Gostkowski, is tied with Jerry Rice for third with 29 games.

Games started: Brady has started all of his postseason games, so he’ll extend that record to 48 as well. Kickers aren’t considered starters, so Rice is next with 29 starts.

Games as winning quarterback: Brady has 35 postseason wins. Joe Montana is second with 16. In third place, Terry Bradshaw, John Elway and Peyton Manning are in a three-way tie with 14 postseason wins.

Passes thrown: Brady has thrown 1,855 passes in the postseason. Peyton Manning, with 1,027 postseason passes, is the only other quarterback to throw more than 1,000.

Passes completed: Brady has completed 1,166 passes in the playoffs. Peyton Manning completed 649, and no one else even has 500 career completions in the postseason.

Passing yards: Brady is the all-time leader with 13,049 career postseason passing yards. Peyton Manning is second with 7,339, followed by Brett Favre with 5,885.

300-yard games: Brady has passed for 300 or more yards in 18 different postseason games. Peyton Manning is next with nine 300-yard postseason games, followed by Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers with eight each.

Passing touchdowns: Brady has 86 career postseason touchdown passes. Joe Montana and Aaron Rodgers are tied for second with 45.

Brady will keep adding to his records on Sunday, and maybe for quite a few postseason games after that.

2023 NFL playoffs: Ranking all 14 postseason teams, with Chiefs, Bills headlining Super Bowl contenders

The 2022 NFL playoff picture is officially set. After the Lions upset the Packers in dramatic fashion on Sunday night, knocking Green Bay out of postseason contention and elevating the Seahawks into the final wild card spot, the schedule for Super Wild Card Weekend is complete. Now, the real games can begin. The postseason is a fresh slate for 14 contenders, and only time will tell which ones are ready to make a run at the Lombardi. In the meantime, here’s how we’d rank them going in:

Tyreek Hill
USATSI

Mike McDaniel deserves credit for guiding Miami to this point, and for unlocking quarterback Tua Tagovailoa early this year. Tyreek Hill is also always liable to shake up a game with his speed. But Tagovailoa is a total unknown from a medical standpoint recovering from his latest concussion, and even if his health weren’t at risk, neither he nor No. 2 Teddy Bridgewater possess the consistent deep-area accuracy to play shootout, which may well be required thanks to their vulnerable pass defense.

13. Seahawks (9-8)

DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett
USATSI

Gifted a ticket to the postseason via the Lions’ heroics, Seattle has the benefit of experience on the sidelines, where Pete Carroll has now led 10 different playoff runs in 13 years. Rookie Kenneth Walker III offer some pop as the old-school bell cow. And the once-porous defense has tightened up lately. Unfortunately, things have gone the wrong direction through the air, where a resurgent Geno Smith has elite targets in DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett but now has 10 turnovers in his last eight games.

Trevor Lawrence
USATSI

Doug Pederson probably deserves Coach of the Year consideration for the way he’s helped restore Trevor Lawrence as an ascending star under center, and his guys have played a scrappy brand of football during their five-game win streak to close the year; Pederson’s teams, dating to Philadelphia, have always gone out with a fight. But they’re a young group whose defensive holes have likely been masked a bit by going up against the Jets, Texans and Titans down the stretch.

Saquon Barkley, Daniel Jones
Getty

Winning meaningful games in the year 2023 usually means winning consistently through the air, which isn’t necessarily something they’ve been able to do with a makeshift receiving corps for Daniel Jones, who’s otherwise enjoyed quiet but remarkable growth under Brian Daboll. Their ceiling, then, feels quite low in contrast to more explosive teams. But as an early-round spoiler, they’re built to make noise thanks to the smart physicality that Daboll’s rubbed off onto Saquon Barkley and Co.

Justin Herbert
USATSI

Welcome to the three-team region of fun, talented teams who simply cannot be trusted. Los Angeles has all the building blocks of a title contender, from the laser-armed Justin Herbert to the ultra-shifty Austin Ekeler to the QB-wrecking Joey Bosa. And yet coach Brandon Staley, whose “D” has folded against inferior opponents, too often seems to get in his own way on key decisions. No matter how many splashy names they have on either side of the ball, their games find a way to go down to the wire.

Dak Prescott
USATSI

Speaking of splashy names, Dallas is the king when it comes to a glitzy on-paper product failing to show up when it matters. When they’re firing on all cylinders, with CeeDee Lamb raking in catches and Micah Parsons terrorizing QBs off the edge, they are a powerhouse. But their ground game has been flat lately, and more concerningly, for all of the high-level distribution Dak Prescott is capable of under center, the QB has been especially risky forcing throws since his return from injury, leading the NFL with 15 picks in just 12 games. On top of that, seven years in, he’s still in search of a defining big-game victory.

Justin Jefferson
USATSI

Kevin O’Connell has this program headed in the right direction, somehow enabling Kirk Cousins to produce some of the gutsiest, most resilient work of his career in an otherwise inefficient year by the QB’s standards, and somehow winning 13 of 17 games with a sieve of a pass defense. The culture is on the upswing, and Justin Jefferson’s smooth playmaking out wide makes it all the more promising. The issue is, the few times the going’s gotten tough for them, well, it gets ugly; Cousins, Dalvin Cook and the entire operation seems to go haywire if Jefferson isn’t feasting downfield. And then there’s that infamous point differential; despite all those wins, we’ve yet to see Minnesota cleanly and handily take care of business.

Tom Brady
Getty

Everything says Tampa Bay should be one-and-done in the playoffs. Everything except, well, the man under center. Todd Bowles’ first go as Bruce Arians’ successor has been sloppy, sluggish and uninspiring, with conservative tendencies poorly mixing with injury-riddled lineups. But Tom Brady is still airing it out at 45, and still saving some of his best stuff for crunch time. Bowles’ “D” is generally fast and physical enough to stay in any game, so on the off chance Brady’s setup doesn’t leave him out to dry, permitting him time to thread strikes to Mike Evans down the sideline, they could easily play spoiler.

Lamar Jackson
USATSI

Where is Lamar Jackson right now? Physically? Mentally? The star QB hasn’t taken a practice field, let alone started a game, in a month. And his availability, as well as his athletic limitations (or lack thereof) coming off a knee injury, could determine whether they’re even capable of reaching the end zone on the big stage. Baltimore’s offense was already rather one-dimensional, with Jackson and J.K. Dobbins charged with running the show on the ground. Fortunately, John Harbaugh is battle-tested on the sidelines, and their “D,” headlined by Roquan Smith, averages more than a takeaway per game.

Jalen Hurts
USATSI

Not so dissimilar to their title-winning predecessors of five years ago, they’re not exactly strutting with heads held high into the tournament, despite at one point looking like the clear-cut total package. The X factor may well be Jonathan Gannon’s defense, which leads the NFL in sacks but has been prone to death by a thousand papercuts. But the bye should help QB Jalen Hurts further return to form as their steely dual-threat catalyst, and his wideout duo of A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith is reliably lethal. Their trenches have traditionally been sturdy, too, helping them win very different kinds of games.

Joe Burrow
USATSI

Though they’ve got an MVP candidate under center in Joe Burrow, they’ve not been a juggernaut down the stretch, topping 30 points just once in their last six games. What they have been, however, is reliable in the clutch, and Burrow’s pretty precision throws are the biggest reason. Ja’Marr Chase’s electricity out wide certainly helps, as does an opportunistic “D.” You worry a bit about Burrow’s protection, and their health in general, but as long as Burrow is out there, it’s tough to count them out.

Kyle Shanahan
Getty

There was a time when injuries could sap Kyle Shanahan’s highly esteemed system of results, as 2018 and 2020 proved. That time now appears past, as Shanahan’s run-first attack is thriving with its third starting QB of the year, with rookie Brock Purdy somehow bringing even more poise and passing touch than Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance before him. The weapons are elite, with Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel as utility men and George Kittle working the middle, and DeMeco Ryans’ defense is nasty, with Nick Bosa off the edge and ball magnets at the next levels. They’re just so well-rounded. The only major question mark is whether Purdy, 23, will look different under the brightest lights.

Josh Allen, Stefon Diggs
USATSI

If destiny lies with any contender, it may be them. Galvanized by the hospitalization and recovery of Damar Hamlin, Buffalo was already the best equipped to rival the Chiefs, their playoff nemesis, thanks mostly to the fireworks tandem of Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs. Allen, of course, is so much of a gunslinger he’s prone to giving up the ball, but so much else works in the Bills’ favor to cancel out the occasional miscue: their ground game is underrated featuring rookie James Cook, the defense is littered with experienced playmakers even sans Von Miller, and coach Sean McDermott is as even-keeled a leader as anyone.

1. Chiefs (14-3)

Patrick Mahomes
Getty

They’ve advanced to the AFC Championship in each of the four seasons Andy Reid’s had Patrick Mahomes as his starting QB, and the two times they didn’t make the Super Bowl, they went to overtime for the conference title. Put simply, there is no safer bet to deliver when it matters most. History isn’t the only thing on their side, either. Despite a vulnerable defense, Reid is unlocking the shifty Kadarius Toney at the right time, Travis Kelce remains an uncoverable safety valve, and Mahomes — ever the clutch trick-play artist — is still making MVP plays look casual. Like the Patriots of old, when the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick pairing alone demanded trust, they are today’s steadiest NFL standard.

2023 NFL Playoff Picture: How Saturday wins by Chiefs and Jaguars impact postseason race, clinching scenarios

The final week of the NFL season kicked off with a doubleheader on Saturday.

The first game of the day took place in Las Vegas, where Kansas City destroyed the Raiders 31-13. It was a huge win for the Chiefs, who have now clinched the No. 1 overall seed in the AFC and the first-round bye that comes with it.

When the week started, the Chiefs weren’t in a position to clinch the No. 1 overall seed with a win in Week 18, but that changed on Thursday after the NFL officially decided to cancel the Bills-Bengals game. That cancellation put the Chiefs’ in the driver’s seat for the top seed and they took advantage of that by beating the Raiders.

Although the Chiefs hold the top seed, there’s still a chance they won’t host the AFC Championship game. If the Bills beat the Patriots on Sunday and end up facing Kansas City in the AFC title game, then the game will be played at a neutral site. If the Chiefs play any team besides the Bills, the game will be played in Kansas City.

The nightcap on Saturday took place in Jacksonville, where the Jaguars clinched the AFC South title by beating the Titans, 20-16. The victory wasn’t clinched until Josh Allen returned a fumble for a touchdown with under three minutes left to play. The win by the Jaguars means that they’ve now clinched the fourth-overall seed in the AFC and that they’ll be hosting a game next week in the wild card round.

With that in mind, here’s a look at the current playoff standings following the wins by Kansas City and Tennessee.

AFC playoff standings

STILL ALIVE
Dolphins (8-8):
If the Dolphins beat the Jets on Sunday, they’ll get the AFC’s final wild-card spot IF the Patriots also lose to the Bills.
Steelers (8-8): For the Steelers to make the playoffs three things have to happen: They have to beat the Browns, the Patriots have to lose to the Bills and the Dolphins have to lose to the Jets.

ELIMINATED
Titans (7-10):
The Titans could have gotten into the playoffs with a win over Jacksonville, but they were officially eliminated on Saturday night after losing to the Jaguars.

NFC playoff standings

STILL ALIVE
Lions (8-8):
To get to the playoffs, the Lions will need two things to happen: They have to beat the Packers and they’ll also need the Seahawks to lose to the Rams.
Packers (8-8): Although the Packers are currently below the Lions and Seahawks in the standings, they’re actually the only one of the those three teams that controls their fate this week. If the Packers beat the Lions on Sunday night, they’ll be headed to the playoffs.

Wild card round matchups (Based on current standings)

AFC

  • (7) Patriots at (2) Bills
  • (6) Ravens vs. (3) Bengals (Coin flip would determine the location of this game if Baltimore beats Cincinnati on Sunday)
  • (5) Chargers at (4) Jaguars

Bye: Chiefs

NFC

  • (7) Seahawks at (2) 49ers
  • (6) Giants at (3) Vikings
  • (5) Cowboys at (4) Buccaneers
