As Lakers stumble early, Russell Westbrook trade possibilities linger: Shams’ Inside Pass Notebook

We are one week into the NBA season and teams across the league are still working on finding their footing on and off the floor. Playing and rotation styles are still being figured out. It is still far too early to make changes in most situations, and as front-office officials travel with their respective teams, attend draft scouting events and begin to identify this season’s prospective trade targets, everyone involved understands the trade market tends to take 20-to-30 games to develop.

Contending teams are working on themselves internally while postseason hopefuls are playing for strong starts to the season. Even in the midst of competition, the buyers and sellers always reveal themselves as the campaign inches closer to the February trade deadline.

In the middle of it all this year, stand the Los Angeles Lakers.

Off to an 0-3 start, the Lakers will be a pivotal team in this season’s trade market because the expectations are the franchise will continue to scan options using Russell Westbrook’s expiring $47 million deal and up to two unprotected first-round picks (2027, 2029). The Lakers lost to the Trail Blazers, 106-104, on Sunday — giving up a 98-90 lead with 4:42 left in the game, when coach Darvin Ham inserted Westbrook back into the game.

GO DEEPER

Shams’ Inside Pass: As Lakers stumble early, Russell Westbrook trade possibilities linger

After Sunday’s game, Ham and Westbrook answered questions about Westbrook’s fourth-quarter stint, which included missing both attempted shots and a 16-foot jumper that the former league MVP took — and missed — with 30 seconds remaining in the game and 18 seconds on the shot clock with the Lakers up 102-101.

The Lakers were impressed with Ham’s coaching acumen, his no-nonsense attitude and his ability to project as an authority figure when he went through the head coaching search process. Those traits have been put to the test from the very beginning of his tenure.

As The Athletic’s Jovan Buha reported in August, Ham was given the authority to bench Westbrook down the stretch of games, and potentially remove him from the starting lineup. Ham was the lone coaching candidate to express the fortitude necessary to be able to bring Westbrook off the bench when needed, sources say. Westbrook was used in a reserve role in the final game of the preseason in Sacramento on Oct. 14, but the Lakers went back to Westbrook in a starting spot to start the season.

In the very early stages of the season, Westbrook has had some spurts of solid defense and energy plays, but has also shot just 28.9 percent from the field and 8.3 percent from 3-point land. As a team, the Lakers are shooting just 21 percent from 3. While Anthony Davis and LeBron James have played at their usual high level to start the year and Lonnie Walker IV and Juan Toscano-Anderson have been bright spots, the Lakers are still trying to find the best rotations to provide shooting and playmaking around their Big 2.

The Lakers and Pacers extensively discussed a potential deal sending Myles Turner and Buddy Hield to L.A. during the offseason, as The Athletic reported in early October, but no deal formed ahead of training camp. The Lakers and Pacers discussed several packages, but Indiana’s demand for both of the Lakers’ first-round picks in 2027 and 2029 prevented a deal from coming to fruition. Turner suffered an ankle sprain during warmups before the Pacers’ season opener last Wednesday, but is expected to return soon.

In a perfect world, the Lakers had hoped Westbrook would find a complimentary role in Ham’s system, but as sources have told The Athletic over the past month, the organization planned to keep an open mind with trade opportunities to improve the team. Potential trade partners across the league have wanted one or two unprotected first-rounders from the Lakers in all deal frameworks, which creates a battle over price and value.

Several more trade avenues are expected to open as the season goes on, as teams fall out of the postseason race and turn their attention toward top prospects Victor Wembanyama and Scoot Henderson.

Charlotte’s Terry Rozier emerged as a trade target for the Lakers in the offseason and their interest in him remains high, multiple sources tell The Athletic. The Lakers and Hornets held discussions about a possible three- or four-team trade during the summer, and hold him in high regard among their possible trade possibilities, but the dynamic Hornets guard’s availability will be entirely predicated on the franchise’s direction for the future and its play as the season goes on. Despite LaMelo Ball being sidelined with a Grade 2 ankle sprain and Rozier recently suffering his own sprained ankle, the Hornets and coach Steve Clifford are off to a 2-1 start in the Eastern Conference.

The Lakers have also held preliminary discussions with the Spurs in recent weeks, sources said, showing interest in three-and-D wing Josh Richardson. The 6-foot-5 Richardson has averaged nearly 13 points to start the season, shooting 47.1 percent on 5.67 three-point attempts per game. So expect the Lakers to continue to keep tabs with the Spurs, Hornets and Pacers as a potential trade partner as the season wears on.

For now, the Lakers appear determined to give the current roster a proper sample size of 20-to-25 games and assess their needs. Lakers vice president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka is tasked with balancing the team’s current state versus the future when using the only two first-round picks eligible to be traded for the remainder of this decade. And for the Lakers, the proper deal will take patience, strategy, internal resolve and growth.

More NBA news and notes as the season gets going…

The Timberwolves and center Naz Reid have engaged in contract extension talks as Reid starts his fourth season, sources said.

Minnesota has also engaged in extension discussions with guard Jaylen Nowell, but the fourth-year guard is expected to bypass a new deal and enter unrestricted free agency next offseason, according to sources. Nowell, a dynamic scorer, is averaging 15 points in three games to start this season.

In addition to the Hawks, the Suns have recently been engaged in talks with the Bucks on a potential Jae Crowder trade, sources said. Milwaukee has registered interest in the veteran forward who has remained away from the Suns’ organization as both sides work toward a trade. Miami is also believed to be among the current suitors for Crowder, according to league sources.

“Unlimited Possibilities” – New Law of Physics Could Predict Genetic Mutations

The researchers believe that they can exploit this new physics law and find the probability of mutations before they take place.

A University of Portsmouth research team has found a potential way to predict genetic mutations before they occur.

According to a University of Portsmouth study, a new physics law could allow for the early prediction of genetic mutations.

The study discovers that the second law of information dynamics, or “infodynamics,” behaves differently from the second law of thermodynamics. This finding might have major implications for how genomic research, evolutionary biology, computing, big data, physics, and cosmology develop in the future.

Lead author Dr. Melvin Vopson is from the University’s School of Mathematics and Physics. He states “In physics, there are laws that govern everything that happens in the universe, for example how objects move, how energy flows, and so on. Everything is based on the laws of physics. One of the most powerful laws is the second law of thermodynamics, which establishes that entropy – a measure of disorder in an isolated system – can only increase or stay the same, but it will never decrease.”

This is an undisputed law relating to the arrow of time, which demonstrates that time only moves in one direction. It can only flow in one direction and cannot travel backward.

He explains, “Imagine two transparent glass boxes. In the left side, you have red gas molecules, which you can see, like red smoke. In the right side, you have blue smoke, and in between them is a barrier. If you remove the barrier, the two gases will start mixing and the color will change. There is no process that this system can undergo to separate by itself blue and red again. In other words, you cannot lower the entropy or organize the system to how it was before without energy expense, because the entropy only stays constant or increases over time.”

Dr. Vopson is an information physicist. His research focuses on information systems, which can range from a laptop’s hard drive to the

Dr. Vopson and colleagues analyzed Covid-19 (Sars-CoV-2) genomes and discovered that their information entropy reduced with time: “The best example of something that undergoes a number of mutations in a short space of time is a virus. The pandemic has given us the ideal test sample as Sars-CoV-2 mutated into so many variants and the data available is unbelievable.”

He continues, “The Covid data confirms the second law of infodynamics and the research opens up unlimited possibilities. Imagine looking at a particular genome and judging whether a mutation is beneficial before it happens. This could be game-changing technology which could be used in genetic therapies, the pharmaceutical industry, evolutionary biology, and pandemic research.”

Here, a close-up of the MIRI image is compared to a past image of the same target taken with NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope’s Infrared Array Camera (at 8.0 microns). The retired Spitzer telescope was one of NASA’s Great Observatories and the first to provide high-resolution images of the near- and mid-infrared universe. Webb, with its significantly larger primary mirror and improved detectors, will allow us to see the infrared sky with improved clarity, enabling even more discoveries.

For example, Webb’s MIRI image shows the interstellar gas in unprecedented detail. Here, you can see the emission from “polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons,” or molecules of carbon and hydrogen that play an important role in the thermal balance and chemistry of interstellar gas. When Webb is ready to begin science observations, studies such as these with MIRI will help give astronomers new insights into the birth of stars and protoplanetary systems.

In the meantime, the Webb team has begun the process of setting up and testing Webb’s instruments to begin science observations this summer.

The James Webb Space Telescope is an international partnership between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). MIRI is part of Europe’s contribution to the Webb mission. It is a partnership between Europe and the USA; the main partners are ESA, a consortium of nationally funded European institutes, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (

Paralympics: David Brown, world’s fastest blind athlete, says ‘possibilities are endless on how fast we can go’

Brown, who has been blind since the age of 13, remembers taking in the “spots and colors” of the Paralympic Games in Beijing as his friends dictated what was happening down on the track.

“I’m like: ‘Hey, some of these guys have the same sight that I do, it sounds like,'” Brown recalls to CNN Sport. “They’re down there running and they’re doing this … and I’m like: ‘Yo, this is possible. I can do this.'”

That was in 2008, but fast-forward 13 years and Brown is now preparing to defend his crown in the 100-meter T11 event at the Paralympics in Tokyo.

Aside from winning a Paralympic gold medal in 2016, the 28-year-old Brown also lays claim to being the first totally blind athlete to run under 11 seconds in the 100m with his classification record of 10.92 seconds.

But the transition from fan in the stands to record-breaking athlete didn’t happen overnight. Growing up, Brown turned his hand to many sports — basketball, wrestling, goalball (a team sport designed specifically for visually-impaired athletes) and volleyball to name a few — before settling on the track.

He raced in 600 and 60-meter events with the track team at the Missouri School for the Blind in St. Louis — gripping a clothesline-like wire that ran alongside the track for assistance — and from there gradually transitioned to running with a guide.

“I was in very big denial of my sight, which is one thing, so there were times when I would run and I didn’t run with a guide because I thought I could see,” Brown says. He was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease at 15 months old, which resulted in glaucoma and ultimately losing his sight years later.

Brown continues: “I was able to see well enough to not necessarily stay in my lanes when I was racing, but I was able to see well enough to stay on the track. So that’s how I got through a lot of things for a while. I didn’t start running with a guide officially until I was 17 years old.”

READ: Tokyo Paralympics will have no spectators as Covid-19 situation in Japan remains serious

‘Like a three-legged race’

Running with a guide is a difficult art to master. Athletes in Brown’s T11 category — which is those with “very low visual acuity and/or no light perception” — run on a tether; the guide’s role is to make sure competitors stay in lane and know how the race is progressing.

“We’re running like a three-legged race,” Brown explains.

“They’re having to adapt to me and my running style and to pretty much how fast and how slow I’m going — my body language.

“They have to be one, in great condition; two, very fast; three, to be able to synchronize their steps with how fast or how slow I’m moving my arms and my legs. Making those adaptations is very vital.”

“Untethered,” a film released on August 3 and produced by Swiss sportswear brand On, tells the story of Brown and his relationship with guide runner Jerome Avery.

Avery, a top sprinter in his own right, finished outside the Olympic qualifying spots at the US track and field trials in 2000 and 2004. He has been a guide runner with US Paralympics since 2004.

An injury to Avery in the buildup to this year’s Games means he and Brown won’t run together Tokyo — a big challenge for Brown as he looks to defend his Rio gold, given he and Avery have competed together for seven years.

“It will be different, it will be a big shift and a change,” Brown said of the prospect of competing with a new guide. “But I’m looking forward to seeing what happens, honestly.”

READ: Afghan turmoil shattering dream of trapped athletes is ‘heartbreaking,’ says IPC chief

‘Everything has a tempo’

Referenced in “Untethered” is Brown’s love for music. He says he has an eclectic taste — including classical, country, gospel, jazz and reggae — and plays drums and piano at his local church. In the film, he meets Tariq Trotter, the rap artist better known as Black Thought.

To an extent, it’s an interest that benefits Brown’s athletic career and the practice of running with a guide.

“Everything has a tempo, you know, and there’s a certain beat that we will, I guess, go to in the sense of running,” he says.

“Of course, you see it in the track room. They say, ‘Oh, he’s taken 234 steps a minute,’ or something like that. You could think of it like beats per minute … it can help get on the same page as far as synchronizing goes.”

Brown adds, however, that using a tether is the best way for a runner and guide to synchronize.

“Say I’m off a step and they’re on … you won’t feel that or you won’t even notice that if you don’t have the tether on,” he says. “The more you have the tether on, the more that you do with the tether, whether it be a slow tempo or a fast tempo, the better.”

Lowering records

The track in Tokyo’s Olympic Stadium is a favorable one for sprinters, yielding fast times during the Olympic Games. Brown’s world record could be threatened in the coming weeks as the Paralympics get underway, although he remains unfazed by the idea of one of his rivals beating his time.

“If somebody breaks my world record … that means our classification is getting faster and that’s the furthering of the sport,” he says. “And that’s what it’s all about at the end of the day. I was just the catalyst for all this.”

Having changed guides in the buildup to the Paralympics, Brown has tempered expectations going into the Games.

But that’s not to say that fast times — and more world records — aren’t on his mind further down the line.

“We’re training towards the future,” says Brown. “We’re already looking at Paris.

“Our training has not been where I guess you could say technically Games training would be, so I don’t know about Tokyo, necessarily, but next year or the following year after that — that’s where I’m saying: ‘Hey, look out because it’s going to get pretty lethal over on this end.’ We have a lot of great guides that we are training up.

“If everything keeps going in the direction that it’s going, the possibilities are endless on how fast we can go and how low we can lower this thing.”

What Are The Possibilities Of U.S. Getting The Long Awaited Bitcoin ETF?

The crypto market topped $2 trillion this week, a month after Bitcoin went below $30,000. Speculation rises again when the U.S. will get a Bitcoin ETF, 8 years after the Winklevoss twins tried to gain SECs approval. The ETF is expected to hold the first global digital asset and also track its price tag.

Towards ending of July, ProFunds took a remarkable step in the direction of the SEC-approved Bitcoin ETF. They are the asset manager and have launched the initial Bitcoin futures mutual funds. The funds are to hold only Bitcoin futures contracts, maybe Canadian money market instruments and ETFs.

Notably, SEC chair Gary Gensler stated a week after that SEC would appreciate a Bitcoin ETF with a related strategy. This is a statement that can increase the rate of ETF application.

Major Firms To Introduce Crypto ETFs

With the increasing popularity of ETFs among institutions and retail investors, many asset managers wish to launch a cryptocurrency ETF. The crypto ETF is diversified, simplified, accessible, and cheap to gain market exposure in some aspects.

The assets are pooled, and investors can pay small amounts to the fund and spread it across the market. The key feature is that investors pay taxes on capital gains when they make sales, and liquidation is instant.

Undoubtedly, Bitcoin has gained a lot of attention due to its return on investment which has been astronomical though volatile. Additionally, with the increased inflation rates, some companies and investors now use cryptos to hedge risk.

Mishra, during research, revealed investors’ opinions on Bitcoin and Gold maintaining their value even when the dollar value depreciates. Neena is the ETF research director at Zacks Investment Research.

The Bitcoin ETF proposed shows the investors’ interest in accessing the product; it was later approved in February. Within two months of its trading, the ETF rolled in over 1billion Canadian dollars.

Possibilities of Bitcoin ETF

There are deliberations that the U.S. lags far behind in crypto and Bitcoin ETF regulation, including those within the SEC ranks. However, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, and other countries have legalized crypto ETPs (exchange-traded products). An ETP is simply an investment tool that trades on any (crypto) exchange; it must not be an ETF.

Canada has recorded a boom in cryptocurrency funds after approving its initial crypto ETF this year. Such funds include the ETF (BTCQ), the 3iQ CoinShares, and the Evolve Bitcoin ETF (EBIT).

The CI Galaxy Bitcoin ETF (BTCX) is the ETF having the lowest available fees with 0.95% annual fees. It was launched in March and had an asset worth $254 million.

The regulators in Canada have always surpassed the U.S in approving various kinds of ETFs, Mishra stated. In addition, they are faster in approving futures-based psychedelic and marijuana investment products, she added. Lastly, Mishra notes that the U.S seems to be very conservative.

Interesting free agent fits and possibilities left for Packers

Green Bay Packers Damon Harrison (98) looks to get a call against the Chicago Berars during their football game Sunday, January 3, 2021, at Soldier Field in Chicago, Ill. Dan Powers/USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin

This would obviously be a re-signing instead of an outside addition. But Harrison played some quality snaps as an interior defender for the Packers to end last season, and he could be the run-stuffing lineman the Packers still need to help Kenny Clark in 2021. Give him a full offseason in Green Bay and a well-defined role and he could be a quality role player for Joe Barry. Throw in the right draft pick, and more development from Kingsley Keke, and the Packers defensive line could take a step forward this year.
