Buffalo Bills’ Micah Hyde to donate portion of proceeds from charity softball game to support shooting victims
BUFFALO, N.Y. — A day after 10 people were killed and three others injured in a shooting at a Buffalo supermarket, Bills safety Micah Hyde committed to donating a portion of the proceeds from his charity softball game to the families of the victims.
Hyde said that the long-planned softball game was almost canceled due to the weekend’s events, but that he felt it was important to bring the community together after such a tragedy and do something positive.
The attack took place Saturday afternoon when a white 18-year-old man opened fire at a Tops Friendly Markets located in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Buffalo. Authorities have described the act as “racially motivated violent extremism.”
“I still can’t believe it,” Hyde said. “But when there’s hate in the world, you kind of erase it with love, and coming out here today and showing the community love and love to the youth, love to the community, love to the foundation. I guess that’s the way to combat it.”
A $200,000 check was presented to Hyde’s IMagINe For Youth foundation by the event’s sponsors prior to the game. In addition to a portion of other proceeds, the money collected from the silent auction held at the event is going to the victims’ families. Everything raised from the softball game is going back to Western New York.
The event attracted over 10,000 people to Sahlen Field in downtown Buffalo, after less than 2,000 attended Hyde’s first charity softball game back in 2019. More than three dozen Bills players were in attendance, including quarterback Josh Allen, tight end Dawson Knox, cornerback Tre’Davious White and safety Jordan Poyer.
“Praying for and with our Buffalo community,” the Bills tweeted Saturday evening. “Our hearts are with the victims, their families and friends.”
With voluntary OTAs continuing this week for the Bills, multiple players said that they expect the team to get together Monday during meetings to figure out the best approach for the larger group to help the community and those most directly impacted by the shooting.
“My heart goes out to the victims and their families,” Allen said. “We really haven’t talked as a team yet. We’ll be in the building tomorrow and I’m sure we’ll talk about it and figure out a way to help the situation, help the families out. It’s something that you never think it’s gonna happen in your community and when it does, it hits home. I was sick to my stomach all day yesterday. I was flying back from my sister’s graduation, and it was just, it’s gut wrenching. It really is.
“And again, we’ll talk as a team tomorrow and kind figure out what we want to do, but there’s no doubt that we’re gonna do something.”
Allen said that he was glad Hyde decided not to cancel the event as it gave Bills players an opportunity “to get out here, show face and show that we care for this community.”
“The microcosm of one NFL football team, the locker room is different ethnicities, races, personalities, all mixed into one,” Allen said. “Coming out here, having a good time and showing the community this is who we are as a team. This is who we are as a community, and we want to be a part of this community.”
While the events of the day included a home run derby and a seven-inning softball game between the offense and defense, the weight of what occurred in the community over the weekend was omnipresent, including during a moment of silence and the emotional national anthem sung by Buffalo Police Officer Armonde “Moe” Badger.
“If we stopped and canceled everything because of hate, we wouldn’t move forward,” Hyde said. “There’s a lot of it, and I think all you can do is just, like I said, spread love and love one another. I think that it was big throughout the last couple years in society, obviously going through COVID and all that type of stuff to really just reach out, help each other and love on each other.”

Houston Texans’ Laremy Tunsil mints draft-night gas mask video into NFT, will donate portion of proceeds to charity
HOUSTON — The day before the 2022 NFL draft begins, Texans left tackle Laremy Tunsil tweeted that he’s moving past his draft night incident by minting a non-fungible token (NFT) of his “infamous gas mask video.”
Just before the start of the draft in 2016, a video of him smoking marijuana out of a gas mask was posted on his Twitter account. Tunsil, who was projected as the draft’s top offensive tackle, slid down the draft board and was eventually drafted by the Miami Dolphins with the 13th pick.
Tunsil later told then NFL Network analyst Deion Sanders that his Twitter account was hacked.
“Man, it was a mistake,” Tunsil said at that time. “You know, it happened years ago. Like I said before, somebody hacked my Twitter account. That’s how it got on there, man. It’s just a crazy world — things happen for a reason.”
Tunsil tweeted that a portion of the proceeds from the 1 of 1 NFT will benefit The Last Prisoner Project, which supports those incarcerated for cannabis offenses.
“I’m looking toward and excited for the future and am grateful for all of those that supported me on my draft night and those that have and will continue to support my journey!” Tunsil tweeted.
Tunsil was traded to the Houston Texans in August 2019 in exchange for a package that included two first-round draft picks. In 2020 he signed a three-year, $66 million extension with the Texans that included $50 million guaranteed.
2 Killed in 6-Vehicle Crash in Batavia; Portion of Kirk Road Closed – NBC Chicago
Two people were killed and two others were injured Monday afternoon when a collision involving a semi, a tanker truck and four other vehicles occurred in suburban Batavia, authorities said.
The crash was reported at approximately 1:36 p.m. in the 1300 block of South Kirk Road, according to a news release from the Batavia Police Department. The northbound lanes of Kirk Road remained shut down during the evening rush hour between East Wilson Street and Butterfield Road.
According to a preliminary investigation, a car was attempting to change lanes when it struck a semi, causing the car to cross over into oncoming traffic and eventually come to rest on its roof.
The two occupants of the vehicle were pronounced dead on scene, authorities said. The victims’ identities haven’t been released as officials work to notify relatives.
Two people inside another vehicle, a woman and child, were transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to police. No other injuries were reported in the collision.
The tanker involved was hauling fuel at the time, police said, adding no hazardous materials leaked from the tank.
Drivers were asked to avoid the area and find alternate routes as police worked on the scene into the evening.
The cause remains under investigation, and no citations have been issued, according to police. Anyone who has additional information about the crash is asked to contact the Batavia Police Department at 630-454-2500.
Some portion of the U.S. population will get booster shots, Dr. Scott Gottlieb says
Former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb said Thursday that Covid booster shots may become a reality for certain swaths of the population. Gottlieb made the prediction on the heels of news that a panel of expert advisors to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention plan to consider booster shots for immunocompromised patients.
“I think the bottom line is that we’re going to be boosting some portion of the population,” Gottlieb told CNBC’s “The News with Shepard Smith.” “I think considering boosters, especially in the older, more vulnerable population, is something that we are going to have to do.”
Gottlieb noted that Israel is already offering booster shots to adults with severe pre-existing medical conditions, and that France and the United Kingdom are planning to administer booster shots. The former FDA chief in the Trump administration also cited data from Israel showing that the durability of the Covid vaccines does not last as long researchers might have predicted from the outset.
“I think we’re going to get there in terms of looking at boosters, particularly for the older population that was vaccinated back in December and January,” Gottlieb said. “It could be that you get a very durable response once you get the third dose.”
Host Shepard Smith also asked Gottlieb about reimposing mask mandates across the nation as a result of the highly transmissible delta variant. Los Angeles County reissued a mask mandate Thursday requiring residents to wear masks indoors, regardless of their vaccination status.
Gottlieb told Smith that he thinks Los Angeles is the exception and advised that individuals take masking measures into their own hands.
“I think individuals in these hot spots around the country who are vulnerable, are going to have take measures into their own hands and take precautions if they think that they’re at risk, because a lot of spread is happening in states that have already affirmed they’re not going back to mandates,” Gottlieb said.

Portion of Apartment Building Roof Collapses in NW Miami-Dade – NBC 6 South Florida
Fire crews responded Thursday after a part of a roof overhang of an apartment building in northwest Miami-Dade collapsed.
The building is located at 17350 NW 68th Avenue. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the three-story apartment building at around 4 p.m.
Footage from Chopper 6 shows a portion of the roof overhang in pieces on the ground below. The damage happened to only the exterior of the building.
Crews evacuated residents and assessed the structural integrity of the building. There are no reports of injuries so far.
It’s unclear why the roof collapsed.

Miami condo collapse: explosives demolish remaining portion of building | Miami condo collapse
Demolition crews set off explosives late on Sunday to bring down the damaged remaining portion of a collapsed South Florida condo building, a key step to resuming the search for victims as rescuers possibly gain access to new areas of the rubble. No one has been found alive since the first hours after the disaster. So far, rescuers have recovered the remains of 24 people, with 121 still missing.
A number of explosions could be heard on Sunday night and then the building started to fall, sending up massive plumes of dust into the air in the surrounding neighborhoods.
Crews were to begin clearing some of the new debris so rescuers could start making their way into parts of the underground garage. Once there, rescuers are hoping that they will gain access for the first time to parts of the garage area that are a focus of interest, Miami-Dade assistant fire chief Raide Jadallah has said. That could give a clearer picture of voids that may exist in the rubble and could possibly harbor survivors.
The precarious, still-standing portion of a collapsed South Florida condo building was rigged with explosive charges and set for demolition overnight, Miami-Dade County officials said late Sunday. The work has suspended the search-and-rescue mission, but officials said it will open up new areas for rescue teams to explore.
Rescuers will await the “all-clear” after the demolition and then immediately dive back into the task of trying to locate any survivors buried under the rubble, County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said. Officials had previously said that the search could resume from 15 minutes to an hour after the detonation.
“We are standing by. We are ready to go in, no matter the time of night,” Levine Cava told a news conference Sunday night.
Search efforts have been suspended since Saturday afternoon to allow workers to drill holes for explosives. Miami-Dade Assistant Fire Chief Raide Jadallah said earlier that up to 210 rescuers will be poised to restart the search as soon as the site is declared safe after the blast.
Levine Cava said Sunday that demolishing the building was a top priority. “Bringing down this building in a controlled manner is critical to expanding the scope of our search-and-rescue effort,” she said at a news conference.”
Officials had evacuated residents around the site ahead of the demolition and warned others to stay indoors and close windows, doors and any other openings that could allow dust in.
“There’s nobody in charge really talking about stopping this rescue effort,” Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett told CBS’ Face the Nation. “This rescue effort as far as I’m concerned will go on until everybody is pulled out of that debris.”
Concerns had mounted that the damaged Champlain Towers South building in Surfside was at risk of falling on its own, endangering the crews below and preventing them from operating in some areas. The approach of Tropical Storm Elsa added urgency to the demolition project. The latest forecasts have moved the storm westward, mostly sparing South Florida, but meteorologists have said the area could still feel effects starting Monday.

The precarious, remaining portion of a collapsed Florida condo building was demolished Sunday night — clearing the way for rescue teams to resume their search for any possible survivors.
The timing of the demolition of the unstable structure was announced just hours earlier by Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, who said bringing the building down is necessary for work to continue at the site.
At about 10:30 p.m., the rigged explosives were set off, leveling the building and leaving behind a cloud of dust and debris over the area.
Over 24 people are confirmed dead from the June 24 collapse of the Champlain Towers South building in Surfside — and 121 people remain missing.
Rescuers will await the “all-clear” after the demolition and then immediately get back to work, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said at a briefing earlier Sunday.
“We are standing by. We are ready to go in, no matter the time of night,” Cava said.
Residents in the area were cautioned on Sunday to keep windows and doors closed to avoid having dust from the demolition enter their homes.

Control your portion sizes
AS Dr Khan reported, animal studies suggest that a 10-50 percent reduction in calorie intake can increase an individual’s maximum lifespan.
Studies of humans show similar links between low calorie intake and an extended lifespan with a lower likelihood of disease.
“Naturally, calorie restriction helps to reduce excess body weight and belly fat, of which both carry the risk of a shorter lifespan,” says Dr Khan.
Spicing things up
According to Dr Khan, herbs and spices don’t just make your food tastier, but also have a beneficial effect on health and wellness.
“Many have been used for medicinal purposes in the past and there is evidence for their role in combating certain diseases and conditions.”
While you must be careful with how much salt you use, sea salt and Himalayan salt are the best types as they contain a range of minerals that are good for health, adds De Khan.
Top up calcium and magnesium
Calcium is known to be essential for bone health. “However, research also shows it may help protect against cancer, diabetes and heart disease as well as manage blood pressure,” reported Dr Khan.
He added: “It also supports nerve and muscle function and helps with weight loss. Magnesium is essential for the absorption of calcium, so foods rich in both are essential.”
According to Dr Khan, whey protein is a good source of both, as well as sardines, white beans, kidney beans, sesame seeds, greens such as cabbage, kale and broccoli, almonds and goat cheese.
Vitamin B12
Dr Khan explains: “The magic of this vitamin is that it helps maintain energy levels but also provides neurological protection as some studies show low vitamin B12 levels increase the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.”
As he explained, it’s also involved in the production of healthy red blood cells, maintains a healthy cardiovascular and digestive system and provides protection against certain types of cancer.
“Again sardines contain vitamin B12, also wild mackerel and salmon, grass-fed beef and lamb, feta cheese, cottage cheese and organic free-range chicken eggs,” he said.
