Bay Port student dies from complications caused by flu and strep B
HOWARD, Wis. (WBAY) – A Bay Port High School student died from complications caused by a mix of Influenza A and Strep B.
According to the Howard-Suamico School DistrictAva Schmidt died Wednesday. She was a freshman at Bay Port High School.
The district sent the following letter to the school community:
“Dear HSSD Families and Staff,
It is with deep sadness that we are sharing with you news of the death of a Bay Port High School student.
Ava Schmidt, a freshman at Bay Port High School, died today, Wednesday, December 21, due to complications caused by Influenza A. Ava is the daughter of Mike and Katerina Schmidt and the sister of Gabby, a seventh grader at Bay View Middle School. Katerina is a teacher at Forest Glen Elementary School.
The District respects the family’s request for privacy during this difficult time and is focused on providing support for those impacted by Ava’s passing.
School counselors and school social workers are available to help our students and staff cope with this loss. To support student needs we will have staff available at Bay Port or by phone at 920-662-7000 Thursday morning (regardless of potential weather impact on the school day). Classroom teachers at Bay Port, Bay View, and Forest Glen will share an age-appropriate message with students Thursday morning regarding this news. We encourage you to discuss this message with your child at home this evening.
We have some suggestions (linked here) that may prove helpful to you as you discuss grief and death with your child. Additionally, Unity Hospice is a non-profit grief counseling organization that will be supporting Ava’s classmates and our students as needed in the coming days, including during winter break.

Ava was the second pediatric influenza patient to die in Wisconsin this season.
DHS announced the first pediatric flu death earlier this week. They said the child lived on the western side of Wisconsin.
A pediatric death is defined as anyone under the age of 18.
DHS encourages everyone six months and older to get vaccinated against the flu. Early data shows the vaccine is a match to current strains. Vaccines can prevent or reduce the severity of flu symptoms, protecting not only yourself but the people around you, and that’s especially a concern with more holiday gatherings coming up. Two out of 3 people in Wisconsin have not received a flu shot.
“Those numbers are several percentage points lower than what we had last year, and it’s very disappointing to be honest with you. And this again is one of our meetings, going through media outlets, is really pushing the fact that we need to get people vaccinated. We need to do what we can to stop the spread of influenza. And we, unfortunately, have seen what the complications can lead to during because of this particular case, in this particular child,” DHS influenza surveillance coordinator Tom Haupt said.

Local health officials say people should also try to avoid the spread of COVID-19 and RSV.
All three illnesses have the potential to be severe for young children, people who are immunocompromised, and older adults.

DHS recommends these additional steps to stay healthy this season:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds.
- Avoid touching your nose, eyes, and mouth.
- Stay home and away from others if you feel sick.
- Avoid being around others who are sick or have flu symptoms.
- Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze and encourage children to do the same.
- Wear a high-quality mask around others to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses.

Cruise ship passenger who fell overboard found dead 18 miles from Port Canaveral, Florida, coast
Video released by the Coast Guard shows the moment a Carnival cruise ship passenger was spotted and later rescued from the Gulf of Mexico after falling overboard Nov. 24.
A woman who fell overboard from a cruise ship on its return to the U.S. was found dead Thursday morning.
The 36-year-old victim fell off the MSC Meraviglia as it was returning to Port Canaveral in Florida, according to local outlet Fox 35.

No further details on the incident will be released until the victim’s next of kin is contacted, authorities said.

“The crew performed an immediate search and rescue operation, alongside the U.S. Coast Guard who supported search efforts with boats and a helicopter,” the cruise line said. “Unfortunately, despite the rapid rescue operation, the passenger sustained fatal injuries. We are offering our full support to authorities as they investigate this matter.”

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the incident.
NASA’s Artemis 1 Orion spacecraft reaches port in San Diego
NASA’s Artemis 1 Orion spacecraft has made it back to terra firma.
Orion reached Naval Base San Diego on Tuesday (Dec. 13) aboard the USS Portland, the U.S. Navy recovery ship that fished the capsule out of the Pacific Ocean on Sunday (Dec. 11) following its successful splashdown.
The spacecraft will be offloaded from the Portland on Wednesday (Dec. 14) and will then begin an overland trek to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida, KSC officials said via Twitter on Tuesday (opens in new tab).

That will be a homecoming for Orion, which lifted off from KSC atop a Space Launch System (SLS) megarocket on Nov. 16, kicking off the uncrewed Artemis 1 mission.
Everything went well on the shakeout cruise; the SLS sent Orion on its way to the moon as planned, and the capsule checked off all of its desired milestones in deep space.
Orion arrived in lunar orbit on Nov. 25, departed on Dec. 1 and headed for Earth on Dec. 5 by conducting a long engine burn during a close flyby of the moon. The spacecraft returned to its home planet on Sunday, splashing down softly under parachutes about 100 miles (160 kilometers) west of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula.
Once Orion arrives at KSC, Artemis 1 team members will give it a thorough going-over, assessing how the spacecraft and its many subsystems held up in deep space and the harrowing return trip through Earth’s atmosphere.
Technicians will also remove some hardware from the capsule for processing and reuse on Artemis 2, the next mission in NASA’s Artemis program of lunar exploration.
Artemis 2 is scheduled to launch astronauts around the moon in 2024. If all goes well with that flight, Artemis 3 will aim to put boots down near the lunar south pole a year or two later, using a SpaceX Starship vehicle as a lander.
NASA aims to build a research base in the south polar region, which is thought to harbor lots of water ice. The agency also plans to build a small space station in lunar orbit called Gateway, which will serve as a jumping-off point for missions to the surface, both crewed and uncrewed.
The first components of Gateway are scheduled to launch atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket in late 2024.

More than 80 injured as Indian police clash with Adani port protesters
KOCHI, India Nov 28 (Reuters) – More than 80 people were wounded in southern India as villagers halting the construction of a $900 million port clashed with police, the latest escalation of a months-old protest waged by a mostly Christian fishing community against Asia’s richest man.
The protests are a major headache for Gautam Adani’s $23 billion ports-and-logistics company which has been forced to stop work on the Vizhinjam seaport that is seen winning business from rivals in Dubai, Singapore and Sri Lanka.
Construction, however, has been halted for more than three months after villagers blocked the entrance of the site, blaming the port of causing coastal erosion and depriving them of their livelihoods.
Over the weekend, police arrested several protesters after they blocked Adani’s construction vehicles from entering the port, despite a court order for work to resume.
The arrests prompted hundreds of protesters, led by Roman Catholic priests, to march on the police station, clash with personnel and damage vehicles there, according to police documents and footage on local television.
Senior local police official M R Ajith Kumar told Reuters 36 officers were wounded in the clashes. Joseph Johnson, one of the protest leaders, said at least 46 protesters were also hurt.
Located on the southern tip of India, the port seeks to plug into lucrative East-West trade routes, adding to the global reach of the business led by billionaire Adani, estimated by Forbes to be the world’s third richest man.
Asked about the latest protest, the Adani Group did not immediately comment. The company has said that the port complies with all laws and cited studies that show it is not linked to shoreline erosion. The state government has also said that any erosion was due to natural causes.

The protests have continued despite repeated orders by the Kerala state’s top court to allow construction to start. Police have largely been unwilling to take any action, fearful that doing so will set off social and religious tensions.
In the latest clashes, police documents said the protesters “came with lethal weapons and barged into the station and held the police hostage, threatening that if people in custody were not released they would set the station on fire.” Eugine H. Pereira, the vicar general of the archdiocese and a protest leader, said the police pelted the protesters with stones.
The port protests recall the backlash Adani faced in Australia over his Carmichael coal mine. There, activists concerned about carbon emissions and damage to the Great Barrier Reef forced Adani to downsize production targets and delayed the mine’s first coal shipment by six years.
