Man admits fatally striking 18-year-old with vehicle after ‘political argument,’ police say

Shannon Brandt, 41, told troopers he felt threatened and “admitted to striking the pedestrian with his car because he had a political argument with the pedestrian and believed the pedestrian was calling people to come get him,” according to a probable cause document filed in court.

The incident around 2:35 a.m. Sunday in the city of McHenry killed 18-year-old Cayler Ellingson, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Brandt — who was also charged with leaving the scene of the fatal accident — left the area after the collision, then returned and called 911 before leaving again, according to the court documents and the highway patrol.

Brandt told a 911 dispatcher the victim was “part of a Republican extremist group,” according to court documents. Authorities did not provide further details of Brandt’s claims nor the specifics of the alleged argument.

Brandt was later arrested at his home. A breath test taken at the Stutsman County Jail registered 0.08, above the legal limit for alcohol, the probable cause document said.

Ellingson’s mother told investigators the teen called her shortly before the incident to ask if the family knew Brandt. She said her son called back a short time later to tell her he was being chased, according to the probable cause document. The mother couldn’t reach her son after that.

After he was struck by the vehicle, Ellingson was taken to a hospital in Carrington, where he was pronounced dead.

Highway patrol officials said the incident happened in the vicinity of a “street dance.” It is not clear if either Brandt or Ellingson was participating in the event.

Brandt was released from custody Tuesday on a $50,000 bond, according to Stutsman County jail records. He has not yet entered a plea and is next due in court October 11. Court records did not list an attorney for Brandt Wednesday, and he did not return phone and email messages from CNN seeking comment.

Eliza Fletcher abduction: A suspect has been charged but the Memphis teacher remains missing, police say

Cleotha Abston, 38, was charged with especially aggravated kidnapping and tampering with evidence, according to a tweet from the Memphis Police Department posted early Sunday.

“Eliza Fletcher has not been located at this time. MPD Investigators and officers, along with our local and federal partners, continue searching for Mrs. Fletcher,” the post said.

Fletcher, 34, was jogging around 4 a.m. Friday when a black GMC Terrain SUV passed by her, according to surveillance footage obtained of the incident. A man was then seen getting out of the vehicle and “ran aggressively” toward Fletcher and forced her into the passenger side of the SUV. Once both individuals were inside the SUV, the vehicle remained in a parking lot for approximately four minutes before driving away, according to the footage cited in an affidavit obtained by CNN.

Abston was arrested Saturday after police found a vehicle they had been looking for in the case.

US Marshals located the GMC Terrain in a parking lot near Abston’s residence, according to the affidavit. The vehicle had the same distinguishable vehicle damage and partial license plate identification seen in the surveillance footage from Fletcher’s abduction.

Abston was located nearby by U.S. Marshals and attempted to flee but was taken into custody, the affidavit said.

It is unclear whether Abston has an attorney.

DNA recovered from a pair of sandals found near where authorities believe Fletcher was abducted helped investigators in Memphis identify and arrest Abston in connection with Fletcher’s disappearance, according to the affidavit.

Investigators discovered surveillance footage captured from a local theater the day before Fletcher’s disappearance, which showed Abston wearing what authorities believe are the same pair of Champion slide sandals found at the crime scene, according to the affidavit.

Additional surveillance footage matched with statements from Abston’s employer confirmed the vehicle believed to be involved in Fletcher’s kidnapping belongs to a woman associated with Abston’s home address.

Cell phone records also place Abston at the site during the time of Fletcher’s abduction on Friday morning, the affidavit said.

Fletcher’s damaged phone was found near the scene where she is believed to have been abducted, CrimeStoppers Executive Director Buddy Chapman said, according to a news release obtained by CNN affiliate WHBQ.

According to the affidavit, a witness said she saw Abston at his brother’s house after the abduction. Both the witness and his brother said Abston was behaving oddly as he cleaned the interior of his SUV and washed his clothes in the sink.

According to the affidavit, Abston declined to share Fletcher’s location.

Photos released by police show Fletcher running in the neighborhood near the University of Memphis. She was last seen wearing a pink jogging top and purple running shorts, police said in an alert.

Fletcher is White, 5 feet 6 inches tall, with brown hair and green eyes, police said. She weighs 137 pounds.

The family of the mother of two is offering a $50,000 reward through CrimeStoppers for information leading to an arrest in the case, WHBQ reported.

“We look forward to Eliza’s safe return and hope that this award will help police capture those who committed this crime,” her family said in a statement shared by Chapman.

In a post on Twitter, St. Mary’s Episcopal School said Fletcher is a junior kindergarten teacher.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said in a tweet it is assisting Memphis police in the investigation.

Indianapolis shooting suspect Shamar Duncan arrested, police say

Shamar Duncan, 22, was taken into custody by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Tuesday afternoon, the department said in a news release.

The three Royal Netherlands Army soldiers were shot outside a Hampton Inn early Saturday and were taken to the hospital, authorities said at the time. One of the victims, later identified as Simmie Poetsema, was in critical condition and died Sunday, Dutch officials said.

The other two soldiers sustained non-life-threatening injuries, police said. They have not been identified by authorities.

The soldiers, members of the Commando Corps, were staying at the hotel while in Indiana as part of a training exercise, according to the Dutch Ministry of Defense.

Duncan was arrested for murder, but the police department said it will decide his final charges after reviewing the case, noting that additional charges are possible. Police did not specify where the suspect was apprehended or a possible motive, but previously attributed Saturday’s shooting to a “disturbance” between the victims and the suspect.

During the investigation, Indianapolis detectives spoke with multiple people and obtained video connected to the investigation, the department said.

“IMPD has been in communication with various agencies within the United States and the Netherlands to coordinate family members coming to Indianapolis and returning the victims to the Netherlands,” police said in a statement Monday.

The soldiers had been training at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center, a 1,000-acre complex southeast of Indianapolis that is being used for training by the Department of Defense “as well as other allies,” the Indiana National Guard told CNN affiliate WISH in a statement.

Bend, Oregon shooting: Victim fought to disarm gunman during Oregon grocery store shooting that left 2 dead, police say

Two people were killed, police said. They were identified as Glenn Edward Bennett, 84, a customer who was shot in front of the store, and Safeway employee Donald Ray Surrett Jr., 66, who fought the shooter in the produce section, Miller said.

“This is the Safeway employee who engaged with the shooter, which is to say he attempted to disarm the shooter and attacked this person, and we believe he prevented further deaths in addition to the quick police response,” Miller said. “Mr. Surrett acted heroically during this terrible incident.”

The gunman — identified by police as Ethan Blair Miller, 20 — was found dead at the scene and died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the police spokeswoman said.

Police found an AR-15-style rifle and a shotgun close to Miller’s body, according to Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz.

The shooting unfolded shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday at a shopping center, Krantz said. Police initially received reports there may have been more than one shooter, Sheila Miller said, but there is no evidence of a second shooter. There were reports of at least two other people who had injuries that were not life threatening, as well, she said.

The motive remains unclear, but police are aware of online posts that might be relevant, Sheila Miller said.

“We are aware that the shooter may have posted information online regarding his plan. We are investigating this. We have no evidence of previous threats or prior knowledge of the shooter. We received information about the shooter’s writings after the incident had taken place and the shooter has no criminal history in the area,” Miller said.

Sunday’s shooting follows a spate of other grocery store shootings across the country in the past year and amid an overall surge in “active shooter” incidents, according to an FBI report.
In May, 10 people were killed in what authorities say was a racially motivated attack in Buffalo, New York. A “hero” security guard and a beloved teacher were among those gunned down.
In March, another 10 people were gunned down at a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder, Colorado. A veteran police officer with seven children was among those killed.
Last September, a gunman shot 15 people — including one fatally — at a Kroger in Collierville, Tennessee. Some people hid in freezers to survive.

How the shooting unfolded

Miller said police received multiple calls of shots fired around 7 p.m. at the Forum shopping center in northeast Bend.

The gunman entered from an apartment complex behind the shopping center, Miller said. He moved through the parking lot while firing rounds from an AR-15-style rifle before entering the Safeway.

Once inside, he shot a customer — Glenn Edward Bennett — who died while being taken to the hospital, Miller said.

The gunman continued to make his way through the store before having an altercation with and fatally shooting Donald Ray Surrett Jr., Miller said.

“As our officers responded, they entered Safeway while shots were still being fired. They found the apparent shooter dead inside Safeway,” Miller said.

An AR-15 and shotgun were found near the gunman’s body, Miller said. Bend police did not fire any shots, she said.

How the gunman obtained firearms is under investigation. Because of online postings, Bend police also contacted the Oregon State Police Bomb Squad, who cleared the grocery store and the apartment complex, Miller said.

Police said it’s unclear how many people were in the store at the time of the shooting.

Officers were on scene within three minutes of the first 911 call, Miller said. It took four minutes from the time officers were dispatched to the time the shooter’s body was found, police said.

Gunman posted plans online

A search warrant was served on the gunman’s vehicle and home, Miller said. Investigators found three Molotov cocktails in his car along with a sawed-off shotgun. Police are working with the ATF to learn if the firearms were legal.

In his apartment, authorities found additional ammunition and digital devices that are currently being reviewed.

CNN has identified several blog entries appearing to belong to Ethan Miller which were published on the blogging site “Wattpad” detailing his plan and reasons for the shooting. The posts have since been removed and CNN has reached out to the blogging site.

Miller published his first blog on June 29, when he blamed Covid-19 and quarantine for worsening his mental health.

Initially, Miller planned a shooting inside a high school on September 8, according to the posts.

More than 35 posts were made within the past two months. Most indicated his desires to commit violence.

One post said that he was “partially inspired” by the Columbine High School shooting.

In other posts Miller cited several reasons for turning into a “ticking time bomb,” which included his family and his love life, which he detailed in a July 8 post.

He wrote he bought a shotgun and an AR-15 for the shooting and said he hoped to kill over 40 people.

Miller also references other mass shootings throughout his entries.

“I immediately turned to my children and said, ‘Run!'”

Customers and employees described a chaotic scene at Safeway, saying they scrambled for safety as bullets flew.

Josh Caba told CNN affiliate KTVZ he and his four children were shopping in the store when the shots broke out.

“We started heading to the front. Then we heard I don’t know how many shots out front — six or seven. I immediately turned to my children and said, ‘Run!’ People were screaming. … it was a horrifying experience,” Caba told KTVZ.

Caba said he was worried about his wife, who stayed in the car because she wasn’t feeling well. But as he and three of his children fled through exit doors by the produce department, he found that his wife had driven to the back of the store and was “sitting in the car, saying ‘Get in the car! Get in the car!'” KTVZ reported.

The father was able to rush back into the store and find their fourth child, he told KTVZ.

An employee who identified himself only as Robert told the Central Oregon Daily News that he and other employees were working a closing shift in the deli when they heard loud gunfire.

“Me and three other employees ran into a walk-in refrigerator and closed the door and stayed there and stayed hidden until authorities arrived,” he said.

A third person was struck and was in good condition at St. Charles Medical Center, spokesperson Lisa Goodman said.

Residents in the central Oregon city were stunned by the shooting.

“I heard anywhere from five to eight shots. I thought it sounded like backfire,” Heather Thompson, who lives across the street, told Central Oregon Daily News.

“Less than a minute later, there were 10 to 20 shots, and then another 10 to 20 shots,” she said. “And by that time, I went inside and told my dad to get away from the window. And people were running out of Safeway.”

CNN’s Holly Yan and Elizabeth Wolfe contributed to this report.

New Zealand: Children’s remains found in suitcases bought by family at auction, police say

In a statement, police said they were alerted to the case last week when the family from the South Auckland suburb of Manurewa reported finding human body parts in several items they bought from a storage facility.

The family is not connected to the children’s deaths, police said, and they are “understandably distressed.”

The children — likely to have been between ages 5 and 10 — may have been dead for a number of years, perhaps three or four, Detective Inspector Tofilau Faamanuia Vaaelua said at a news conference on Thursday.

A postmortem examination is being conducted to try to determine the children’s identity, Vaaelua said. Investigators are also looking for clues as to how, when and where the children died.

Vaaelua said police were working with Interpol and have opened inquiries with overseas agencies, but initial inquiries suggest relatives of the victims are in New Zealand.

“I really feel for the victims or the family of these victims. And, you know right here, right now, there are relatives out there that aren’t aware that their loved ones have deceased,” he added.

The case was “extremely upsetting news for the community to hear,” he said.

Police are trying to view closed-circuit television footage that may offer some clues, though they acknowledge that it may be difficult to obtain given the significant amount of time that has passed.

The storage company is assisting police with their inquiries, and other household and personal items sold from the storage facility are being examined to establish a link to the suitcases, police said.

Kabul: Deadly explosion hits mosque in Afghan capital, police say

Khalid Zadran, a spokesman for the Kabul police chief, told CNN the blast caused casualties, but did not specify further.

The incident occurred in the city’s police district 17 and security forces are on the scene investigating, he added.

Health care organization Emergency said that at least three people had died.

“Following today’s explosion, we admitted 27 patients to our Surgical Centre for War Victims in Kabul, including five minors, one of them a 7-year-old boy,” Stefano Sozza, Emergency’s Country Director in Afghanistan, told CNN.

“Two patients arrived dead, one died in the emergency room,” he said.

“In the month of August alone, we managed six mass casualties in our hospital, with a total of almost 80 patients. Throughout the year, we have continued to receive gunshot injuries, shrapnel injuries, stabbing injuries, and victims of mine and IED explosions on a daily basis. The country is suffering the consequences of a very long conflict that has undermined its future,” he added.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed there were dead and wounded civilians, but did not say how many. He tweeted that the Taliban government “strongly condemns” the explosion, and vowed the perpetrators of “such crimes will be caught and punished for their heinous deeds.”

Another Taliban deputy spokesperson, Bilal Karimi, condemned the explosion in a tweet on Wednesday evening.

“The murderers of civilians and perpetrators of similar crimes will soon be caught and punished for their actions, God willing,” Karimi wrote.

CNN’s Brent Swails and Jonny Hallam contributed reporting.

Anne Heche crash now being investigated as felony, police say

The initial investigation was for misdemeanor DUI, but results from a blood draw from Heche and word of an injury to someone inside the home have elevated the matter to a felony, LAPD Officer Jeff Lee told CNN.

“Her blood showed signs of impairment and that is why it is now being investigated as a felony traffic collision,” Lee said.

A woman inside the home at the time of the crash suffered minor injures, but did seek medical attention, according to Lee.

“The blood draw results showed a presence of narcotics but additional testing is required to rule out any substances that were administered in the hospital,” Officer Annie Hernandez further elaborated.

Heche remains hospitalized in critical condition, according to a representative for the actress.

“She has a significant pulmonary injury requiring mechanical ventilation and burns that require surgical intervention. She is currently being treated at the Grossman Burn Center,” a spokesperson for Heche told CNN in a statement Monday.

Her representatives have not yet commented on the blood draw results.

Brazilian woman swindled mother of more than $100 million in art, police say

Written by ReutersRio de Janeiro, Brazil

Brazilian woman Sabine Coll Boghici, 48, was arrested on Wednesday on allegations she was part of a bizarre scheme to defraud her 82-year-old mother, Genevieve Boghici, the wife of the late art collector Jean Boghici, out of money, artwork and jewelry totaling some 724 million reais ($142.42 million).

Her arrest has exposed a disturbing web of fraud that police say lasted years and involved alleged psychics to swindle artwork by some of Brazil’s most emblematic painters. Four other people were also arrested and two others, Diana Rosa Aparecida Stanesco Vuletic and Slavko Vuletic, are on the run.

The scam began in 2020 when Genevieve was approached by a supposed psychic with prophecies of her daughter’s imminent death.

The victim was then taken to several more psychics who police say used personal information provided by her daughter to scam her distraught mother into transferring money to pay for “spiritual treatment.”

In the months that followed, police allege the suspects physically threatened Genevieve and that she was kept at home for months by her daughter.

Sabine and an accomplice posing as a psychic “began to take the artwork from the (mother’s) house, claiming that the painting was cursed with something negative, with negative energy that needed to be prayed over,” said Rio de Janeiro police officer Gilberto Ribeiro.

After almost a year of being mistreated by Sabine and her accomplices, the victim decided to go to the police.

Police say 16 paintings were stolen, including works by renowned Brazilian artists like Cicero Dias, Rubens Gerchman and Alberto Guignard.

Three pieces from iconic modernist painter Tarsila do Amaral – “O Sono,” “Sol Poente” and “Pont Neuf” — were also stolen, which together police appraised at a value of 700 million reais ($137.69 million).

Amaral’s “Sol Poente” was among 11 paintings recovered Wednesday in a Rio de Janeiro police raid on one of the psychic’s homes.

Authorities have also recovered three paintings in Sao Paulo. Two were sold to a museum in Buenos Aires but have not yet been recovered.

Police say seven people are suspected of involvement in the years-long crime, facing charges of embezzlement, robbery, extortion, false imprisonment and criminal association.

An Atlanta drive-by shooting left 8 people under the age of 21 injured, police say

A group of around 12 people was gathered at the parking lot of a Shell gas station when a vehicle drove into the parking lot and shots were fired from inside the car, a police spokesperson told CNN affiliate WXIA-TV. A total of 8 people, including six women between the ages of 16 and 21 years old, and two men, 18 and 21 years old, were shot.
In a statement, the Atlanta Police Department said that the shooter or shooters remain unknown at this time and the incident remains under investigation.

All of the victims arrived at a hospital shortly after the shooting, according to the police statement. A driver flagged down a police car at around 1:00 a.m. Sunday and told officers four people in the car had been shot, the statement said. Police escorted the victims to Piedmont Hospital.

Two other victims of the same shooting also arrived at Piedmont Hospital to receive treatment. These six victims were in stable condition, police say.

Another two victims first arrived at Emory Hospital in critical condition and were transferred to Grady Memorial Hospital.
