Domestic violence suspect leads West Covina police on chase through LA County

WEST COVINA, Calif. (KABC) — Two suspects fled recklessly from authorities at high speeds in two separate chases that developed in the same area of the San Gabriel Valley Tuesday night.

The first chase involved a domestic violence suspect who fled from West Covina police for more than an hour. After he crashed and was boxed in, a tense barricade situation developed as he refused to surrender.

Even as that barricade was continuing, a second chase began unfolding only blocks away in West Covina.

Domestic violence suspect chase

The first chase started in the West Covina area just before 10 p.m. A suspect wanted for domestic violence and possibly rape fled at high speeds over the 10 Freeway, onto the southbound 710 and 105 and briefly drove around surface streets in Inglewood.

Eventually the Scion got back on the 105 Freeway heading eastbound.

At least six West Covina police SUVs followed the suspect closely at high speeds hitting close to 100 mph on the freeway at times. It appears they did not request CHP assistance, though the agency was standing by.

Police say the suspect was wanted for domestic violence and possibly rape.

By 11 p.m. more than an hour after the chase started, a police cruiser slammed into the back of the Scion in a PIT maneuver that sent it spinning over a median. The front right rim went spinning and the tire went flat as the car slammed into a light pole.

As of 12:35 a.m. Wednesday, the suspect was still barricaded inside the car. West Covina police believe there are no passengers inside and it’s unknown if the suspect has a weapon. A home near the standoff was evacuated, police said.

It first seemed as if that would end the chase, but the vehicle backed off from the pole and took off again.

The driver stopped a short time later and again it seemed to be over, as officers approached with weapons drawn.

Once again the car took off and drove fast even as sparks shot up as the bare wheel scraped along the ground.

Eventually the vehicle slammed into the back of a parked car in West Covina and a police SUV boxed it in on the street.

But again the suspect refused to give up, gunning his engine and making the damaged wheel spin in place, sending up sparks and a cloud of smoke.

At one point as he was trapped, it appeared the suspect threw an object, possibly a wrench, out of the vehicle.

Second police chase starts in West Covina

As the barricade was continuing, a second police pursuit involving sheriff’s deputies chasing a stolen vehicle developed only a short distance away.

That stolen car drove fast through neighborhoods of the east San Gabriel Valley. At one point it briefly stopped and at least two passengers jumped out and then the vehicle kept going.

The stolen car ran red lights and drove at fast speeds on surface streets with at least one sheriff’s unit close behind.

The driver and anyone else in the car appeared to have evaded getting captured after authorities decided to cancel the chase.

Houston crime: Robbery suspect who led HPD on chase shot by 5 officers on Westheimer Road, Chief Troy Finner says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A chase that started in southwest Houston ended with officers opening fire and hitting a robbery suspect on Westheimer Road, according to police.

Police said officers started pursuing a suspect at about 3:40 p.m. around Leawood Boulevard and Bissonnet Street. It was unclear why they were chasing the driver.

“He’s hitting a bunch of cars. He’s hitting a bunch of cars,” an officer can be heard saying in Rangecast audio.

HPD initially reported the suspect fired shots at officers who then returned fire and hit the man in the the 13400 block of Westheimer Road.

“Shots fired, shots fired. Suspect down,” an officer can be heard saying in Rangecast audio.

Then during a briefing Sunday at about 8:30 p.m., HPD Chief Troy Finner said they could not confirm the suspect even had a weapon.

“Originally, we sent out that the suspect fired upon officers and then they returned fire,” Finner said. “We can’t confirm that suspect fired upon officers.”

Finner said officers located the man on Amblewood and Stancliff, when a chase that lasted 15 to 20 minutes ensued.

“It’s just senseless. If you’re doing a crime and police get behind you, the game is up. Don’t do crazy things,” said Finner during Sunday’s briefing.

When the suspect got to Westheimer Road, he lost control, crashed into at least two vehicles and then hit a median, according to police. That’s when Finner said officers approached the man’s vehicle, and as he got out, four officers and a sergeant discharged their weapons. It was unclear how many times the man was shot.

No officers were reported injured, but the man was taken to the hospital by Life Flight in serious condition. Finner said the suspect was undergoing surgery and is expected to survive.

Police described the suspect as a 40-year-old Black man who has a criminal history.

As for the five officers, they were all put on administrative leave until HPD is able to further investigate and review surveillance video Monday morning.

“Our officers and citizens, we’re in tough times. We’ll do what we can to keep the city safe and at the end of the day, we are the people who hold the community together. If we make a mistake, we fess up,” said Finner during Sunday’s briefing.

Chase of box truck across LA County ends with suspect in custody

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — A bizarre hour-long chase of a box truck across Los Angeles County Thursday night ended with authorities arresting the suspect, who attempted to flee on foot after ditching the vehicle.

During the chase, the suspect drove onto a sidewalk and would also stop and back up toward L.A. County sheriff’s vehicles before fleeing again.

Authorities chased the box truck around two parking lots as the suspect kept driving in circles. Toward the end of the chase, the box truck’s tires were shredded due to spike strips that were deployed.

AIR7 HD was first over the chase around 9:20 p.m. as the suspect was driving in a residential neighborhood in Watts with narrow streets. The driver, a reckless driving suspect, managed to get out of the neighborhood after forcing an oncoming car to back up and get out of its way.

The driver eventually stopped in Compton, and opened the door. After a few minutes, the suspect abandoned the vehicle and was taken into custody after failing to outrun deputies during a foot pursuit.

Driver, Wanted for Assaulting an Officer, Inside San Jose Hills House After LAPD Pursuit – NBC Los Angeles

A driver is barricaded inside a home in South San Jose Hills, after leading Los Angeles Police Department officers from the Olympic division in a high-speed chase from Silverlake through the Diamond Bar area and West Covina on Sunday afternoon.

The pursuit started in Silverlake, after the male driver of a white Chevy SVU assaulted an LAPD police officer, attempting to run them over with their vehicle twice, according to the LAPD.

The wanted vehicle, registered to an owner in Rialto and likely not stolen, traveled from surface streets in Silverlake to the Diamond Bar area in 20 minutes, around 2:50 p.m.

The vehicle at one point travelled down the westbound 210 Freeway, weaving in and out of lanes and driving down the shoulder of the freeway at times.

The driver travelled down surface streets in the Azusa area, eventually making his way into West Covina.

The LAPD underwent the pursuit for long enough that at 3:01 p.m. they became concerned about fuel levels, and requested that the California Highway Patrol take over the chase, though the pursuit ended before the CHP vehicles arrived.

Azusa police were also notified of the chase, as the wanted vehicle travelled at high speeds on surface streets into the Azusa area, then into West Covina, through to La Punte.

The driver pulled over around 3:15 p.m. in a residential area in South San Jose Hills, on Doverdale Avenue and Richford Avenue, then fled on foot into a home on the 400 block of Doverdale.

A few minutes after the driver disappeared into the building, three individuals were seen exiting the home — a young girl holding a dog, a young woman and a man.

It was not immediately clear if the driver knew the residents of the home.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Chase Ends After Driver Gets Stuck in Stolen Ambulance, Tries to Escape on Foot – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

An hourslong chase with the driver of a stolen Dallas Fire-Rescue ambulance came to an end Monday afternoon when the ambulance appeared to get stuck and the driver tried to outrun police on foot.

Dallas police said the ambulance was taken from Fire Station No. 53 Monday morning and was spotted early in the afternoon in southeast Dallas County.

The man behind the wheel of the ambulance refused to stop and led police on a chase for nearly two hours that went through Dallas County north into Collin County and through the cities of Plano, McKinney and Princeton.

At times the driver intentionally drove into oncoming traffic, but no crashes have been reported in connection with the chase.

It was back in McKinney where the driver tried to again lose the police, sheriff’s deputies, and state troopers in a residential neighborhood, often going off-road and across lawns trying to escape.

The ambulance apparently bottomed out a curb and the driver quickly bailed out and tried to outrun police on foot while also trying to hold up his falling pants.

Moments later the man was cornered in a fenced-in area and was taken into custody by several officers near Joyce Way and Tension Lane.

Officers with the Dallas Police Department, Dallas County Sheriff’s Office and Texas State Troopers, and a number of other agencies, assisted in bringing the chase to a close.

Ambulance Chase

  • At about 1:10 p.m. the chase was underway in southeast Dallas along Interstate 20 near Lawson. The driver was headed toward Kaufman County.
  • The drive then turned around in Forney and went back along I-20 to I-635 where he went north to U.S. 75.
  • As of about 2:05 p.m., the driver was headed northbound on U.S. 75 toward Plano.
  • Just before 2:10 p.m. the driver left the highway and entered a residential neighborhood, driving through back alleys.
  • At about 2:11 p.m., the driver avoided several Dallas police officers, Dallas County sheriff’s deputies and Texas State Troopers attempting to block the exit from the neighborhood.
  • At about 2:18 p.m. the driver got on Texas 121 in McKinney but exited a short time later.
  • At about 2:30 p.m. the driver was headed into oncoming traffic on U.S. Highway 380 near Princeton.
  • At 2:37 p.m., the driver was headed westbound on U.S. 380.
  • At 2:43 p.m., the driver took the ambulance off the road briefly to avoid spike strips — a retractable device used by police to flatten car tires.
  • At 2:55 p.m. the driver got stuck while off-roading in the ambulance and, while also attempting to hold up his pants, tried to escape from the officers on foot. The driver was taken into custody moments later near Joyce Way and Tension Lane.

CHP Chasing Black Car From Riverside to Orange County – NBC Los Angeles

The California Highway Patrol was in pursuit of a black vehicle in Orange County Monday night.

Newschopper4 was over the chase around 10:30 p.m. in the Anaheim Hills area, with a black car driving at slow speeds on the 91 Freeway westbound. The car had been leading authorities for about 20 minutes at that stage.

The pursuit began related to a vehicle code violation in Riverside County, the CHP said. When the car refused to pull over, the pursuit started.

The car was traveling at around 55 mph on the freeway, so it was not a high-speed chase.

Around 10:47 p.m., the car pulled off the freeway onto surface streets in the Buena Park area and began to drive slightly more erratically, occasionally stopping suddenly.

On one of those stops, the black car came to a halt in the middle of the street, before a rear passenger door popped open and a woman jumped out of the car.

Please check back for updates.
