The Pokémon Happy Meal at McDonald’s is getting ruined by greedy adults

Right now, select McDonald’s are celebrating the 25th anniversary of Pokémon with a promotion that turns the iconic Happy Meal box into Pikachu’s face. Bundled with this cherubic container are 50 collectible cards, including some rarer holographic cards. And some people are mass buying Happy Meals to get their hands on them.

Pokémon cards are such a hot commodity that some fans say they’re having a hard time buying booster packs at big retailers. Nearly every week, there’s a new record broken for the dollars people are spending on old-school packs — and new scams to go along with that commotion.

The McDonald’s promotion, in other words, never stood a chance. Folks are waking up early to stake out what McDonald’s are selling the new Happy Meals. Some are apparently buying the Happy Meals in mass numbers in the hopes of getting all the collectibles, and just throwing out the food. Some McDonald’s are even placing restrictions on buying the Happy Meals, though scalpers are reportedly already turning around and selling the individual cards for a markup. Some customers are going around to multiple restaurants, unable to find a single Happy Meal. On websites like eBay, entire boxes of the cards or sealed packs are going for hundreds of dollars. It’s unclear if the boxes are being bought behind the scenes, or if they’re being swiped by employees.

Granted, you don’t have to be a kid to appreciate a toy, and Pokémon nostalgia is squarely the realm of adults. Plus, not everyone is being a scalper or hoarder! Some folks are trying to do some good even as they buy multiple packs.

Some mass buyers are even experiencing a healthy dose of karma. But it’s wild to see the fervor around the cards reach such a fever pitch that actual kids probably won’t be able to get a product partially made for them, too. McDonald’s did not immediately provide Polygon with a comment.

Tomorrow Is Roselia Community Day In Pokémon GO

It’s that time of the month again. Tomorrow is Community Day in Pokémon GO, and Roselia is the featured Pokémon. Let’s dive into the details.

Roselia Community Day graphic in Pokémon GO. Credit: Niantic

Here are the full details of Roselia Community Day in Pokémon GO along with our tips:

Sunday, February 7, 2021, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time. Roselia will be appearing more frequently in the wild. If you’re lucky, you may encounter a Shiny one!

Last month, Machop Community Day saw Niantic utterly nerf every non-Machop spawn in the game. In my raid group, we saw approximately two spawns other than Machop the entire day. Niantic has never commented on this change, but this hyper, hyper increased Community Day may make this quite the chance to earn Candy XL.

Evolve Roselia during the event or up to two hours afterward to get a Roserade that knows both the Charged Attack Weather Ball (Fire-type ) and the Fast Attack Bullet Seed.

This is interesting in that we’re getting a Community Day that offers two moves for the first-ever time, but this one seems like it has niche usage. It’s essentially going to make Roselia good against other Grass-types rather than giving it coverage against a Pokémon that could actually hurt it.

Budew will be hatching from 2 km Eggs. 1/4 Hatch Distance when Eggs are placed into an Incubator during the event period.

Take advantage of this while you can, even if this Community Day isn’t your style. 1/4 Hatch Distance is a terrific feature and will go into effect an hour after the Team GO Rocket event ends, so stock up on those KM Strange Eggs while you can.

For US$1 (or the equivalent pricing tier in your local currency), you’ll be able to access the Roselia Community Day–exclusive Special Research story, Stop and Smell the Roselia. Remember, Trainers—if you purchase a ticket for the Pokémon GO Tour: Kanto event by Wednesday, February 3, 2021, at 11:59 p.m. PST (GMT −8), you’ll get this Special Research story for free!

Stay tuned for our Is It Worth It breakdown on this ticket, as we assess the direction these ticketed Special Research questlines have taken lately.

Good luck out there, fellow Pokémon GO trainers!

Pokémon GO Announces Quality Of Life Updates For February 2021

In their announcement of the February 2021 events for Pokémon GO, Niantic updated players on their plans to make quality-of-life adjustments to the game. Let’s take a look at all of the plans this mobile developer has to make Pokémon GO a more user friendly experience.

Niantic posted the following quality-of-life updates to their official Pokémon GO blog:

You can look forward to an image gallery showing off the PokéStop and Gym images that you and other Trainers have submitted. This feature will roll out in different regions over time—starting with level 40+ Trainers in New Zealand on Tuesday, February 9, 2021—and will become available worldwide to Trainers level 38 and above toward the end of March 2021.

This is definitely a “let’s see this in practice” type feature. It’s nothing that Pokémon GO players were asking for, really, but it could be something that enriches the game. It’s unclear if this gallery will be made up of solely PokéStop submission photos or footage taken by players who do the poorly received AR+ tasks, though. Either way, it’s difficult to picture how this will add to the game, but Niantic is known for pulling a fun surprise here and there. The jury is out on this until it rolls out.

Ever wanted to capture the moment you level up in Pokémon GO to share with friends? Soon, you’ll be able to do just that—without screenshotting! The level-up social share feature will be coming in February to Trainers worldwide.

Well, that’s just nice! I have botched a screenshot here or there in my day. Now… what about getting this for the moment in which one encounters a Shiny in Pokémon GO? Asking too much? Eh, maybe.

And last but not least, you’ll soon be able to transfer Legendary and Mythical Pokémon when selecting multiple Pokémon by enabling the functionality in the game settings. We hope this will make managing Pokémon storage a bit easier for those of you who have amassed especially large collections!

This, though some will likely not believe it, is something that the Pokémon GO community has wanted for a long time. On a personal note, whenever I write on Bleeding Cool suggesting that players transfer Legendaries during Spotlight Hours with the double transfer Candy bonus, the inevitable comment comes in: “Never transfer Legendaries, just trade them!” The fact of the matter is, the amount of Legendaries that many players have is more than one can ever trade. For example, with Raikou coming to raids today, there are players who will do a Raikou every day with their free pass. There are those who will do a couple a day with paid passes. Then… there are those who will do up to dozens per day while it’s in raids. Those players need a feature like this because trading every Raikou is not an option. Some need to be transferred, and this will save quite a bit of time.

Word to the wise, though? Favorite those you don’t want to transfer… because this will undoubtedly lead to a Pokémon GO transfer tragedy.

The Unreleased Unova Shinies in Pokémon GO – Part Twelve

Even though the Unova Region has only been released in Pokémon GO for just over a year, many of its species have already debuted their Shiny forms. Even though many Shinies remain unreleased, they are in the game’s code and available for us to see. Let’s take a look at some Unova Shinies that have yet to be released in Pokémon GO.

Unova Shinies in Pokémon GO. Credit: Niantic
  • Stunfisk: Even though it looks almost as if you dropped a manilla folder on the floor, I think there’s something charming about Stunfisk. In its Shiny form, it looks… well, it looks like the fallen manilla folder has a blue tab on it. Does that mean that we can’t love this Pokémon? No. No, it does not.
  • Golett, Golurk: This is a subtle change that makes for an S-Tier Shiny. The blue/green of Golette is replaced with a darker, greyer version of the same palette which makes the glowing green stand out even more. This is the perfect example of a Shiny where a smart, subtle change makes all of the difference in the world.
  • Pawniard, Bisharp: These two lose the red for a blue and off-white, which makes Pawniard look a bit like a Lego and Bisharp look even more like a Power Ranger. While this looks a bit odd here in the static form, it may be one of those Shinies that looks better on-screen. There is, after all, an incredible Shiny Bisharp holo rare card in the Pokémon TCG: Steam Siege expansion.
  • Bouffalant: The rose gold Buffalo is here! It’s an oddly elegant Shiny for a Pokémon that otherwise looks like a real-life animal that stole the gold rings off of a Shiny Reshiram.
  • Vullaby, Mandibuzz: Pretty much, they said “Let’s pink these two up.” It works, making both Vullaby and Mandibuzz look like how classic cartoons used to color vultures.

Next up, we continue our spotlight on the unreleased Unova Shinies in Pokémon GO. Stay tuned!

Everything You Need to Know About Mareep Incense Day

Pokemon Go‘s latest Incense Day is here to celebrate the arrival of Mega Ampharos into the popular mobile title. From 11 AM to 5 PM local time today, either Dragon-type or Electric-type Pokemon will spawn when you have Incense active. Additionally, Electric-type Pokemon will appear via Incense spawns from 11 AM to 1 PM and from 2 PM to 4 PM while Dragon-type Pokemon will appear via Incense spawns from 1 PM and 2 PM and from 4 PM to 5 PM. Additionally, Mareep will appear more often overall from Incense during the entire event. To help players participate in the Incense Day event, Pokemon Go is selling 3 Incense for 1 Poke Coin.

In addition to Mareep appearing more often during the event, any Ampharos evolved during the event will know the move Dragon Pulse, a move that it previously could only learn during a 2018 Community Day. Dragon Pulse is particularly handy when Ampharos Mega Evolves, as Mega Ampharos is an Electric/Dragon-type Pokemon and would gain a same type attack bonus when using the attack.

Pokemon confirmed to appear during the Incense Event includes: Pikachu, Magnemite, Voltorb, Chinchou, Mareep, Plusle, Minun, Stunfisk, Horsea, Dratini, Trapinch, Vibrava, Swablu, and Bagon. Note that Plusle, Minun, and Bagon are all needed to complete the Hoenn Celebration Event’s Collection Challenge.

In addition to today’s Incense Day, Pokemon Go is also hosting the aforementioned Hoenn Celebration Event, which features increased spawns of various Pokemon from the Hoenn region. This includes the addition of Groudon and Kyogre in 5-Star Raids through tomorrow, Monday January 25th. The game will then jump into a Johto Celebration event that will give players the opportunity to have certain Pokemon evolve to learn moves that were previously exclusive to older Community Days. All of these Celebration Events are leading towards the ticketed Pokemon Go Tour: Kanto event, which gives players a chance to capture Shiny versions of every Pokemon from the Kanto region.

Pokemon Sword and Shield Player Shares Heartbreaking Shiny Metagross Loss

Shiny Pokemon are some of the most elusive creatures in the series, so losing out on the chance to have one as part of your collection can be heartbreaking. Pokemon Sword and Shield player and Reddit user Cleffa-on-a-Laptop shared a video of a Max Raid battle in which they had a chance to catch a Shiny Metagross. In the video, the user can be seen deliberating between Poke Ball options before electing to use an Ultra Ball. While it can’t be seen in the video, the user mentions in the thread that they actually had a Master Ball, but elected to save it. Unfortunately, that Ultra Ball wasn’t enough to catch the creature, leading to a lost Shiny!

The video from Cleffa-on-a-Laptop can be found embedded below.

I think my soul just died… (My bad for the horrible video quality.) from r/PokemonSwordAndShield

Introduced in Pokemon Gold and Silver, Shiny Pokemon have become highly sought-after since. There are fans that dedicate hundreds of hours to search out some of the most elusive Shiny Pokemon, so the prospect of losing out on one of those opportunities is horrifying to say the least. What’s more, Metagross is often used by competitive players, so the creature could have been an invaluable part of a team!

Alas, it seems that it was not meant to be for Cleffa-on-a-Laptop! Perhaps their video will stand as a cautionary tale (not to be confused with a Clefairy Tale) about the need to use Master Balls a bit more judiciously. Master Balls were introduced with Pokemon Red and Green, and most series entries allow players to obtain just one throughout the game; they also have a 100% catch rate. As such, some players tend to hoard them, waiting for the perfect opportunity. If the Reddit user had just elected to use that Master Ball in their inventory, they might have had a new team member, as opposed to the regret of a lost chance. Pokemon fans, don’t let the same thing happen to you!

Pokemon Sword and Shield is available now, exclusively on Nintendo Switch. You can check out all of our previous coverage of the game right here.

Pixel Artist Imagines Modern Pokémon With Game Boy Graphics

Image: Pat Ackerman

Illustrator and pixel artist Pat Ackerman has spent the last year reimagining the entire Pokédex of Pokémon Sword and Shield as old-school sprites.

Starting back when the eighth-generation starters were revealed, Ackerman slowly but surely pixelized every pocket monster found in the series’ most recent games. And as of this week, he has an incredibly impressive portfolio of perfectly pixelized Pokémon to show for it.

Perhaps even more impressive is Ackerman’s dedication to making his art look as close to the first generation of Pokémon games as possible—Pokémon Yellow specifically.

“When creating these, I use the 56 x 56 size canvas, which was the original size of the sprites in Pokémon Red/Blue/Green/Yellow,” Ackerman told Kotaku. “I also stick to the palette of Yellow. I really focus on the pose of the Pokémon, as that’s what used to really define who they were before 3D models. I try to make them dynamic and showcase something unique about the Pokémon.”

Ackerman’s other pixel projects span previous Pokémon generations and Monster Hunter, beautifully capturing the constraints of the Game Boy hardware. His work can also be found in PC role-playing game Monster Crown.

We’ve included a few of Ackerman’s favorite Pokémon Sword and Shield sprites at the top of this story, but be sure to check out more of his work on Twitter and Instagram.
