Bam Margera: I Was Pronounced Dead After Five Seizures, Pneumonia

Bam Margera reunited with his former “Jackass” collaborator Steve-O on the most recent episode of the latter’s “Wild Ride” podcast and opened up about his December 2022 hospitalization. News broke Dec. 9 that Margera had been put on a ventilator and was unable to breathe on his own after contracting pneumonia. Margera revealed to Steve-O that his pneumonia was only one factor behind his hospitalization, as he also suffered five different seizures.

“Basically, I was pronounced dead on Dec. 8,” Margera said. “I did not know that I had gnarly COVID and my body was shutting down. I went into four seizures, each one lasting 10 to 20 minutes. On the fourth one I bit my tongue so hard it was nearly fallen off. It got so swollen and puffy it wouldn’t fit in my mouth. I was drinking the infected blood which gave me pneumonia as well.”

Margera continued, “I went to the hospital and had my fifth seizure and then couldn’t breathe without a tube down my throat. I woke up five days later thinking I was there for just a couple hours. I spent eight days in there. When they took that tube out I felt like I sucked on Darth Vader’s dick.”

Steve-O recalled reading the news about Margera being put on a ventilator and thinking the “Jackass” star would lose his life. Margera and Steve-O both got their start in Hollywood on the MTV prank-stunt series, but Margera was not involved in last year’s feature film “Jackass Forever” because he broke a clause in his contract that required him to stay sober during production.

Margera filed a lawsuit last August against Paramount and “Jackass” ringleader Johnny Knoxville over the firing, claiming the creators coerced him into signing the “wellness agreement” for the movie while he was still in rehab. The suit alleged that Margera was fired after testing positive for Adderall, even though he had an Adderall prescription for 10 years. The lawsuit was eventually settled.

Bam Margera celebrates hospital release after pneumonia battle

Bam Margera is back home after being hospitalized for pneumonia and COVID-19.

“I’m out!” the former “Jackass” star captioned a photo of himself posing with his friend Johnny Schillereff on Instagram on Saturday.

“Thank you to my friends, family and you for the love, support and prayers. 🙏 💜.”

Friends flooded Margera’s post with well wishes and words of encouragement following his health scare.

“So good to hear BamBam!! Take it easy my friend❤️,” musician Jussi 69 commented.

“F–k yes! Thank god you’re good dude! ❤️❤️❤️,” skateboarder Mike Mo Capaldi wrote.

Last week, 43-year-old Margera was hospitalized in the ICU of a San Diego hospital where doctors had placed him on a ventilator. Despite the terrifying turn of events, Margera was said to be in stable condition.

The “Jackass” alum’s family confirmed his hospitalization last week.

The hospitalization capped off a tumultuous year for the “Viva La Bam” alum, who has been attempting to escape numerous rehab centers while receiving treatment for his substance abuse and mental health issues.

Margera’s brother, Jess, and their mom, April, posted a joint Instagram statement in August addressing Bam’s health after he was granted a temporary healthcare guardian.

“It’s no secret that Bam has struggled with mental health and addiction,” the duo wrote at the time. “You’ve watched Bam grow up and supported him through his ups and downs.

“Although we love sharing our lives with you, some things need to be handled privately and treatment is one of them,” the statement continued. “Recovery is difficult and even more so under public scrutiny.”

Bam’s family members then disputed the “Free Bam” movement that began to take hold on social media, clarifying that their family member was not “in a conservatorship.”

“We ask for you to support Bam in his recovery, to stay on track, and wish him well in his sobriety,” the statement concluded.

Jackass star Bam Margera ‘is battling pneumonia and on a ventilator’

Jackass star Bam Margera is reportedly battling pneumonia and on a ventilator in hospital.

TMZ reports that the former professional skateboarder, 43, was admitted to hospital in San Diego earlier this week and then tested positive for Covid-19 while at the facility.

The publication claims that since testing positive doctors decided to put him on a ventilator in the ICU.

Tough times: Jackass star Bam Margera is reportedly battling pneumonia and on a ventilator in hospital

He is reportedly in a stable condition and being looked after by health care professionals.

MailOnline has contacted representatives for Bam for more information.

It comes after a difficult year for Bam who has been treating drug and alcohol abuse issues in rehab on and off.

Health: TMZ reports that the former professional skateboarder, 43, was admitted to hospital in San Diego earlier this week and then tested positive for Covid-19 while at the facility

In September Bam returned to his court-ordered rehab program with significant changes to his treatment plan to avoid another escape attempt.

According to TMZ, a Judge restructured Bam’s treatment to no longer require him to reside at an in-patient facility, as he has been doing this past year.

However, he will reportedly still have to see a psychiatrist regularly, and he will be required to remain sober and continue taking classes.

In May, the skateboarder celebrated ‘one year of treatment’ for drug and alcohol abuse at a Boca Raton facility and planned on attending outpatient treatment classes for the next two months.

Illness: The publication claims that since testing positive doctors decided to put him on a ventilator in the ICU

Just weeks later, he was reported missing by his rehab facility on June 13 after he fled the facility for the second time.

Sheriff’s deputies and a crisis intervention team found the troubled TV star days later at a hotel in Deerfield Beach, Florida, and took him back to a different rehab facility.

The reality star claimed that he left the treatment center because he was worried that he was being kept from seeing his son and he was concerned he wouldn’t be able to raise him if he was in rehab.

He has reportedly been estranged from his wife Nikki Boyd, who hasn’t made attempts to contact him since he has been in rehab.

Recovery: He is reportedly in a stable condition and being looked after by health care professionals

In May, the Jackass alum broke his right wrist ‘for the 10th time’ and dislocated his right elbow while skateboarding, but he refused pain medication due to his sobriety.

Margera has been residing in rehab for a year in the wake of a September 2021 incident in which authorities answered an emotional disturbance call.

In February of last year, the former Jackass star shared a troubling video admitting he had been dealing with suicidal thoughts.

The MTV personality, who has long struggled with substance abuse, talked about considering suicide, revealing he went so far as to look up how to tie a noose online.

In June, Margera privately settled his wrongful termination lawsuit against the Jackass creators over his firing (due to testing positive for Adderall) from the successful fourth film, Jackass Forever.

Also, in June, Jackass director Jeff Tremaine said Bam threatened him and his family in a successful petition to obtain a temporary restraining order against the one-time MTV star.

In a text message, Bam vowed to Tremaine, ‘I’m gonna kill you in one mother f****** punch.’ The bad blood stems from Bam’s removal from Jackass 4 in February amid concerns from producers about his dependability and sobriety.

Insiders told TMZ that Margera failed to meet stipulations of an agreement from producers that included drug testing, breathalyzer testing, taking his prescribed medications, and visits with a mental health professional.

In May, Jackass staple Steve-O took to Instagram to defend Tremaine and Knoxville for helping organize a life-saving intervention when he had severe substance abuse issues.

‘Everyone bent over backward to get you in the movie, and all you had to do was not get loaded,’ Steve-O said. ‘You’ve continued to get loaded; it’s that simple. We all love you as much as we all say we do, but nobody who loves you can enable or encourage you to stay sick.’

Complicated: It comes after a difficult year for Bam who has been treating drug and alcohol abuse issues in rehab on and off (pictured – in May, the skateboarder celebrated ‘one year of treatment’)

Cause of pneumonia cluster in Argentina identified as legionella

As of Saturday, a total of 11 pneumonia cases had been identified as part of the outbreak associated with a health clinic in the city of San Miguel de Tucumán, including four deaths in patients with underlying health conditions, the organization said.

The organization said Saturday it was informed by the Argentina Ministry of Health legionella was the cause, and added authorities are now investigating the source.

The ministry is “collecting environmental samples, conducting risk assessments, and implementing actions in the healthcare clinic related to the outbreak,” the update said. “PAHO is providing support to Argentinian health authorities from its Headquarters and the PAHO Country Office in Argentina to investigate and characterize the outbreak.”

Legionnaires’ disease is a serious type of pneumonia caused by legionella bacteria. People can get sick when they breathe in small droplets of water containing the bacteria, causing an infection in the lungs. The illness can be treated with antibiotics.

The bacteria can occur in shower heads and faucets, hot tubs, cooling towers, hot water tanks, decorative fountains or plumbing systems in large buildings.

Some health care workers at the clinic started to have symptoms between August 18 and 22, Argentina’s National Ministry of Health said in an earlier news release.

San Miguel de Tucumán is the capital city of the agricultural Tucumán province in northwest Argentina.
