‘Instagram Makes People Depressed’: Elon Musk Doubles Down On Criticism Of Non-Twitter Social Media Platforms

The owner of one of the largest social media platforms in the world shared his latest criticism of a rival platform. Could the comments keep people from the rival platform or have them avoiding social media all together?

What Happened: One of the biggest news stories of 2022 for the financial world was the $44-billion purchase of Twitter by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Musk had been a fan of Twitter for years, using the platform as his social media outlet of choice to share his thoughts, memes and also important updates and commentary from Tesla and SpaceX.

One platform Musk has not been a fan of is Instagram, a photo and video based social media platform owned by Meta Platforms META.

“Instagram makes people depressed & Twitter makes people angry. Which is better?” Musk recently tweeted.

The comments by Musk prompted huge reactions from his large base of followers.

One user replied with “LinkedIn makes people depressed, not Insta.” Musk responded to the comment with a fire emoji.

Twitter user @WallStreetSilv replied with “Twitter doesn’t make me angry. It makes me laugh all day long.”

Musk replied that Twitter does make him laugh a lot.

Dogecoin DOGE/USD co-founder Billy Markus responded that “Instagram is for narcissists, Reddit is for assimilating into hivemind of idiots, Facebook is for old people, Twitter is for crazy masochists.”

Why It’s Important: The comments from Musk about Instagram were not his first takes against the social media platform.

In 2018, Musk said Instagram could be a place where “people look like they have a much better life tan they really do” while appearing on “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast.

Musk said that people on Instagram might look better and appear happier “than they really are.”

Musk expressed his distaste for both Instagram and Facebook during an interview with the Tesla Silicon Valley Owner’s Club in 2022. Musk took down company pages for both Tesla and SpaceX on Facebook.

“It’s not a political statement and I didn’t do this because someone dared me to do it. Just don’t like Facebook. Gives me the willies. Sorry,” Musk previously said.

Musk admitted during the interview that he has a secret Instagram account, also known as a “finsta.”

Musk said he previously had a public Instagram account, but found himself taking a lot of selfies as a result.

“Instagram, man — it’s a thirst trap, you know,” Musk said.

Musk said he found himself questioning why he took so many selfies and was hunting for likes on Instagram.

Instead, Musk prefers Twitter where he can get across “whatever message I’m trying to get across.”

“I only need one means of communicating.”

On Twitter, Musk also recently responded to a post showing a 2021 study that found people’s social circles have shrunk significantly over the last 30 years, which could be due to the rise of social media.

“Maybe we should spend less time on social media,” Musk replied to the post. The comment from Musk prompted many responses, including those questioning the comments from the new owner and CEO of Twitter.

“You just dropped $44 billy on a social media company maybe give it a few years before taking that stance,” user StockTalkWeekly replied.

The Last Word: The latest comments about Instagram from Musk could create distance between several of the social media platforms and also see fans of Musk and Tesla spending less time on Instagram and more time on Twitter.

Inside Twitter as ‘mass exodus’ of staffers throws platform’s future into uncertainty

New York
CNN Business
 —

Death is in the air on Twitter.

On the platform Thursday evening, where #RIPTwitter was the top trend worldwide, users wrote what they feared might be their last posts, offering apprehensive goodbyes and listing the other (more stable) social media platforms where they can still be found.

They were reacting to the dire news emanating from inside Twitter. Scores of remaining employees at the social media company on Thursday appeared to reject owner Elon Musk’s ultimatum to work “extremely hardcore,” throwing the communications platform into utter disarray and raising serious questions about how much longer it will survive.

A version of this article first appeared in the “Reliable Sources” newsletter. Sign up for the daily digest chronicling the evolving media landscape here.

The death of Twitter would have weighty consequences, given how integral the platform is to global communications. The platform has often been compared to a digital town square. World leaders use Twitter to communicate, journalists use Twitter to newsgather, dissidents in repressive countries use Twitter to organize, celebrities and major brands use Twitter to make important announcements, and the public often uses Twitter to monitor all of it in real-time.

If the platform were to die off, or become unusable because of instability issues, no single space would immediately replace it and communications could become fractured across multiple social media websites, leading to a seismic disruption and slowdown in the flow of information.

Inside the company’s Slack, a mass resignation effectively occurred after Musk’s 5pm deadline for employees to arrive at a decision passed. Hundreds of staffers appear to have called it quits, accepting Musk’s offer to exit in exchange for three months of severance.

Employees flooded the “#social-watercooler” channel with the salute emoji, indicating that they had chosen not to sign Musk’s pledge. A similar series of events unfolded in the Slack channel earlier this month as Musk eliminated roughly 50% of the company’s then 7,500-person workforce.

A former Twitter executive, who recently exited the company, described the situation as a “mass exodus.” Asked about the situation, the former executive said, “Elon is finding out that he can’t bully top senior talent. They have lots of options and won’t put up with his antics.”

“They will struggle just to keep the lights on,” the former executive added.

That assessment was universally shared by the other half dozen current and former employees on Thursday. It was already bad enough after Musk executed mass layoffs at the company earlier this month. So bad that Twitter asked some of the people it had let go to come back just days later. The state-of-play has only become more dire since then.

In fact, Twitter management was in panic mode hours before the deadline passed, people familiar with the matter said, explaining that senior leaders were “scrambling” to convince talent to stay at the company.

Musk himself seemed to finally realize the grim state of affairs, sending an all-staff email relaxing his previously uncompromising anti-remote work position. “Regarding remote work, all that is required for approval is that your manager takes responsibility for ensuring that you are making an excellent contribution,” Musk said in the email.

It didn’t appear to do much good.

Two employees who had decided to reject Musk’s ultimatum on Thursday were quite clear in why they were doing so. “I don’t want to stick around to build a product that’s being poisoned from the inside and out,” one said, adding later that he felt good about making a decision “in line with what I stand for.”

A recently laid off employee who remains in touch with former coworkers said, “People don’t want to sacrifice their mental health and family lives to make the richest man in the world richer.”

And Twitter seemed to grasp the mess on its hands Thursday evening, sending an email to staff notifying them it has once again shuttered all of its offices and suspended employee badge access, presumably to protect its systems and data.

Twitter’s already decimated communications department didn’t respond to requests for comment. But Musk nodded to the situation in a tweet.

“How do you make a small fortune in social media?” Musk asked. “Start out with a large one.”

Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter has translated into huge user growth — for upstart social media platforms like Mastodon and Tumblr, according to new data

  • Since taking over Twitter, Musk has said Twitter’s active users have surged to new highs.

  • New data from SensorTower found that smaller rivals like Mastodon and Tumblr have also seen an explosion of growth.

  • Twitter installs have grown by 21% since Musk’s takeover, while Mastodon’s have grown by 657%, according to the data.

Since taking over Twitter, Elon Musk has boasted that the platform’s active users have surged to record highs.

The claim is unverified, though perhaps a rising tide is lifting all boats.

New data shows that while more people have downloaded Twitter on Apple’s app store and Google’s play store since Musk’s takeover, its growth is minimal compared to the explosion in downloads of smaller upstart rivals like Mastodon and Tumblr, as some Twitter users appear to be searching for alternatives.

Mastodon, which is a decentralized microblogging platform, saw downloads grow 657% in the 12 days following Musk’s ownership of Twitter, according to SensorTower.

According to the data, Tumblr, another microblogging service once owned by Yahoo, saw adoption surge by 96% in the US and 77% worldwide.

Twitter installs climbed 21% during the same time period.

To be sure, overall user numbers on Twitter eclipse those of Tumblr and Mastodon. Mastodon has 1 million global downloads, according to SensorTower, while Twitter had 238 million daily active users as of July.

However, the recent interest in smaller microblogging sites points to some users’ discontent with the recent chaos on Elon Musk’s Twitter and the growing demand for a replacement.

Many popular users on Twitter have encouraged their followers to move over to Mastodon, with some even adding “also on Mastodon” to their names on Twitter.

The app’s surge in popularity has even taken its founder, Eugen Rochko, off guard. He recently told NPR he has been pulling all-nighters to meet demand.

Tumblr has taken advantage of the newfound attention, trolling Elon Musk’s recent blue checkmark fiasco by offering to sell two blue checks for $7.99.
