Brad Pitt sues Angelina Jolie over French estate Château Miraval

Monsieur et Madame Smith.

Brad Pitt is suing ex-wife Angelina Jolie, accusing her of illegally selling off her share of their French estate, Château Miraval.

Pitt alleges they had agreed that neither would sell their share of the Château — where they married in 2014 — and its profitable vineyard without agreement from the other party.

But the “Fight Club” star claims in the suit that while the vineyard became “Pitt’s passion,” Jolie brazenly sold off her share to Russian businessman Yuri Shefler without his permission.

The court documents, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, state, “Jolie consummated the purported sale without Pitt’s knowledge, denying Pitt the consent right she owed him and the right of first refusal her business entity owed his.

“She sold her interest with the knowledge and intention that Shefler and his affiliates would seek to control the business to which Pitt had devoted himself and to undermine Pitt’s investment in Miraval.”

The vineyard property is worth $164 million.

The Miraval estate is located in the village of Correns in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region in southeastern France. The 35-room mansion is surrounded by lush gardens with a moat, fountains, aqueducts, a pond, a chapel, and a vineyard that Pitt says he has invested a large amount of money in.

Jolie, 46, and Pitt, 58, bought the estate in 2008 for $28.4 million, with the intent to bring up their children there and build a family wine business. The couple tied the knot there in 2014, splitting in 2019.

And while their messy divorce has been finalized, the couple is still embroiled in court battles over child custody and their considerable assets.

Pitt developed the vineyard at Miraval into a multimillion-dollar business and one of the world’s top producers of rosé wine.

But the court papers state that, by 2013, “Jolie stopped contributing altogether” for the renovations, while Pitt “continued to invest millions of dollars … [funding] roughly 70 percent of the couple’s investment in Miraval.”

In January 2021, “Jolie informed Pitt in writing that she had reached a ‘painful decision, with a heavy heart,’” the suit alleges.

“Jolie explained she had purchased Miraval with Pitt ‘as a family business’ and as the place she believed they ‘would grow old’ together,” the suit continues.

“Nevertheless,” Jolie continued, she could “no longer maintain any ownership position in an alcohol-based business given her personal objections.” Pitt began negotiations to buy out Jolie’s share.

Then, in October 2021, the wine division of the Stoli Group, Tenute del Mondo, announced it purchased Jolie’s 50 percent stake in the estate and the wines it produces. The business is controlled by Russian businessman Shefler.

The sale was a surprise to Pitt, who now claims he is deprived of using the Château as his private home and can no longer oversee the company that he helped to create and invested millions of dollars into.

The suit adds, “Jolie seeks to recover unearned windfall profits for herself while inflicting gratuitous harm on Pitt. Jolie long ago stopped contributing to Miraval — while Pitt poured money and sweat equity into the wine business. Jolie seeks to seize profits she has not earned and returns on an investment she did not make.”

Plus, “The purported sale deprives Pitt of his right to enjoy his private home and to oversee the business he developed from scratch.”

Brangelina tied the knot at their vineyard estate in Le Val, France on August 23, 2014.

And while Pitt’s investment and work to develop Miraval wine now means the property is worth hundreds of millions of dollars, “Miraval’s success and associated rise in value allowed Jolie an opportunity to capitalize on Pitt’s success and cash out, without ever having lifted a finger to grow the enterprise.”

A source familiar with the situation added, “Unfortunately, this is another example of the same person disregarding her legal and ethical obligations.

“In doing so, she has violated the rights of the only person who poured money and sweat equity into the success of the business by purporting to sell both the business and family home to a third-party competitor.

“She is seeking a return on an investment she did not make and profits she did not earn.”

Lawyers and a rep for Jolie were not immediately available for comment.

College football picks, bowl games: Michigan State vs. Pitt, Tennessee vs. Purdue among best bets

The good news is last week’s special Four Pack edition of The Six Pack had a winning week. The bad news is that only three of the four games were played. The Hawaii Bowl was canceled on the eve of the game — which would be Christmas Eve Eve? — and more have gone down since.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise considering what’s happening in every other major American sport. Still, college football was lucky enough this season to largely avoid the postponements and cancelations that were rampant in 2020. Here’s hoping we don’t lose too many more games in the coming week and that all six of the games in this week’s column get played.

Unless the picks are doomed to be incorrect. Any pick likely to be wrong should be postponed. Odds are via Caesars Sportsbook.

Games of the Week

No. 10 Michigan State vs. No. 12 Pitt

Featured Game | Michigan State Spartans vs. Pittsburgh Panthers

Peach Bowl: — Thursday, Dec. 30: The biggest story of this game is who isn’t playing. Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett, who finished third in Heisman voting this season, opted out of the game to prepare for the NFL Draft. Michigan State running back Kenneth Walker, fifth in the Heisman voting, has done the same. That undeniably takes some of the appeal out of a New Year’s Six game, but at least everybody who wants the College Football Playoff to expand to 12 teams has more ammo for their argument.

As if they’re being held hostage and forced to watch.

Anyway, let’s not go off on a tangent. Obviously, they’re two significant absences that make the game a little more difficult to handicap, but while Pickett’s the headliner, he’s not the only noticeable absence for Pitt. Offensive coordinator Mark Whipple left to become the OC at Nebraska, so the Panthers will have a new play-caller and a new QB. Nick Patti should start for the Panthers, and the redshirt senior has thrown 62 passes in his college career. Meanwhile, Jordon Simmons is filling in for Kenneth Walker. It’s not an exact science, but I’m of the mind that a running back is much easier to replace than both your QB and OC — even one as good as Kenneth Walker. I’ll be taking the Spartans. Michigan State 31, Pitt 27 | Michigan State -2.5

No. 14 Oregon vs. No. 16 Oklahoma

Featured Game | Oklahoma Sooners vs. Oregon Ducks

Alamo Bowl — Wednesday, Dec. 29: How did two teams ranked so highly end up in the Alamo Bowl? Well, first of all, the Alamo Bowl is a lovely game that’s featured a lot of good matchups over the years. Secondly, it’s because nobody is left on these teams. Seriously. Oklahoma lost coach Lincoln Riley to USC, and he took a large chunk of the coaching staff with him. The Sooners have also seen a lot of players either enter the transfer portal or declare for the NFL Draft since as well, including names like QB Spencer Rattler, DL Perrion Winfrey, LBs Nik Bonitto and Brian Asamoah, and WR Jadon Haselwood.

This would all be great news for Oregon if it wasn’t going through the same thing. Coach Mario Cristobal left to take the Miami job and offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead was hired as the head coach Akron. The Ducks also had a lot of players enter the portal or start preparing for the draft, so there will be a lot of new faces in important roles for this one. That means we have two possible outcomes, regardless of the victor. Things either get stupid fun and 100 points are scored as nobody knows how to stop anyone, or it’s an ugly mess and nobody can score. I’d bet on the latter before the former. Oklahoma 24, Oregon 16 | Under 60.5

Lock of the Week

Tennessee vs. Purdue

Featured Game | Purdue Boilermakers vs. Tennessee Volunteers

Music City Bowl: — Thursday, Dec. 30: Opt-outs impact some teams more than others. For the top teams in the country that have hoarded top recruiting classes, it’s a lot easier to replace key players. Well, Purdue has lost its biggest weapon on offense in receiver David Bell (93 receptions, 1,275 yards, 6 TD) and its most impactful player on defense in George Karlaftis (54 pressures, five sacks). Those are not players the Boilermakers can replace without issue.

Meanwhile, Tennessee is as close to full strength as any team can be at this point of the season. Tiyon Evans has transferred to Louisville, and while the running back had a role in the offense, he isn’t irreplaceable. I don’t know how this Purdue defense gets enough stops without Karlaftis, nor do I know how the Purdue offense can keep up without Bell. Tennessee 34, Purdue 20 | Tennessee -5

Option Team of the Week

Air Force vs. Louisville

Featured Game | Louisville Cardinals vs. Air Force Falcons

First Responder Bowl — Tuesday, Dec. 28: I have long been a champion of Service Academy unders when they play during the regular season, but there’s another trend involving the academies I haven’t mentioned much: they crush it in bowl games. Since 2005, service academies have gone 20-9 ATS in bowls. They’re 0-1 this season, but while Army didn’t cover against Missouri, it did win outright. Much like that game, this is a matchup Air Force can exploit.

Air Force ranks seventh in the nation in offensive success rate and 21st in points per possession. Its offense will be up against a Louisville defense that ranks 87th in defensive rush EPA and 105th in success rate against the run. The Cardinals will have success on offense against this Falcons defense, but I don’t trust them to get as many stops as they’re going to need to win. Take the points, but don’t be surprised if Air Force wins outright. Air Force 28, Louisville 24 | Air Force +1.5

Revenge Game of the Week

Minnesota vs. West Virginia

Featured Game | Minnesota Golden Gophers vs. West Virginia Mountaineers

Guaranteed Rate Bowl — Tuesday, December 28: When Minnesota went 11-2 in 2019, its offensive coordinator was Kirk Ciarocca. Ciarocca left after the season for the same job at Penn State, but he lasted only a season there before being replaced. For the past year, he’s been an offensive analyst with West Virginia. However, he won’t be with the Mountaineers for the bowl game.

Instead, he’ll be calling plays for Minnesota!

Ciarocca recently returned to the Gophers, replacing Mike Sanford. This means Minnesota will have the same person calling plays from that great 2019 season, and that person also has an intimate knowledge of everything the Mountaineers offense does.

Oh, and West Virginia will be without RB Leddie Brown (1,065 yards rushing, 13 touchdowns, 217 yards receiving) and WR Isaiah Esdale (29 receptions, 362 yards). If all that isn’t enough, Minnesota has won both of its previous bowl games under P.J. Fleck. Considering Fleck is a living can of Red Bull, we can safely assume his team will be showing up ready to play. Minnesota 28, West Virginia 21 | Minnesota -5

Turtles of the Week

Maryland vs. Virginia Tech

Featured Game | Virginia Tech Hokies vs. Maryland Terrapins

Pinstripe Bowl — Wednesday, Dec. 29: I try not to make a habit of betting on Maryland, especially when it’s favored, but I can’t help doing it here. I’m not even sure the parents of Virginia Tech’s players will recognize the team taking the field at Yankee Stadium for this one. Justin Fuente was fired and replaced by Penn State defensive coordinator Brent Pry, so it has a new coaching staff. On the player front, the Hokies will be without starting QB Braxton Burmeister (portal) and two leading receivers in Tre Turner (NFL Draft) and Tayvion Robinson (portal). The Hokies will miss starting offensive lineman Lecitus Smith, too. On the defensive side of the ball, they’re without defensive linemen Amare Barno and Jordan Williams, who combined for 57 QB pressures, 9.5 TFL and 6 sacks and are now off to the NFL. Oh, and Jermaine Waller, who led the team with four interceptions, is off to the NFL, too.

So, yeah, the Hokies are missing a lot of key players. While the Terps have been dealing with injuries all season, they don’t have any known opt-outs of which to speak. They’ll be as close to full-strength as can be expected, so it’s hard to imagine them not winning this game comfortably. Maryland 31, Virginia Tech 23 | Maryland -3.5

Brad Pitt, Joseph Kosinski Racing Project Revs Up Bidding War – The Hollywood Reporter

Hollywood can’t get enough of fast cars.

A bidding war erupted Friday for a racing project featuring bold-faced names that has studios and streamers burning rubber to get their gloves on it.

The untitled project has Brad Pitt attached to star and Joseph Kosinski, the filmmaker behind the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick, attached to direct.

Veteran mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer and screenwriter Ehren Kruger, who worked with Kosinski on Maverick, are also part of the blockbuster pitch package.

According to sources, offers have been coming in from studios Paramount, MGM, Sony and Universal as well as streamers Netflix, Apple and Amazon. Even Disney, which normally sits out these kinds of races, is on the course for this one.

The story or take isn’t clear but sources say that Lewis Hamilton, the British modern racing legend, is also involved with the project.

Pitt and Kosinski have long tried to make a racing movie. In 2013, Pitt circled Go Like Hell, which had Kosinski attached along with Tom Cruise. That project eventually morphed into Ford v. Ferrari with a whole new actor and director combination.

Hollywood has always maintained a fascination for cars barreling down the tracks, with the sport having visual appeal, high stakes drama and both hot-headed and cold-blooded personalities.

The sport attracts Hollywood players, perhaps best embodied by Steve McQueen. And while some movies don’t take — Ron Howard’s well-regarded Rush didn’t find an audience — when they do, as in the case of 2019’s Ford v Ferrari, one gets box office and Oscar gold.

UPMC, Pitt release results of largest clinical trial of monoclonal antibody treatment for COVID-19 – WPXI

PITTSBURGH — UPMC doctors addressed the latest COVID trends during a news conference Wednesday, particularly highlighting the success they’ve seen with monoclonal antibody treatment.

“So far, this trial has already shown us that the best monoclonal antibody is the one that’s available to you,” said Dr. Derek Angus, UPMC Chief Innovation Officer.

Angus stated that to date, 5,700 UPMC patients have been treated with a type of monoclonal antibody, which is essentially a potent version of the natural defense that bodies build to fight a virus. Researchers are right now continuing to study their effectiveness against the Delta variant, but so far, the treatment has proved to be successful at combating COVID.

“We’ve had just a handful of mild adverse reactions, not uncommon really from receiving any other medication, so we have found them to be remarkably safe and remarkably effective,” said Angus.

Angus said the treatment is ideally offered to COVID-positive patients as soon as possible, and can resultantly reduce the chance of hospitalization. Some children older than 12 have been among recipients.

Between the treatment and others, “the odds of death has been falling by 5 percent every month.”

With that said, the doctors still urge people to get vaccinated, wear masks, and socially distance.

“Delta is spreading among people we previously considered less vulnerable,” said Dr. Rachel Sackrowitz, Chief Medical Officer, UPMC ICU Service Center.

Sackrowitz said even people in their twenties have become critically ill, and that the “overwhelming majority” of hospitalized patients are unvaccinated.

[Here is how to stay informed about coronavirus updates from WPXI]

UPMC’s top pediatrician also noted an increasing number of children getting sick.

“We are seeing an increase in outpatient cases of COVID in children in the clinics and the emergency department and an increase in children hospitalized with COVID,” said Dr. John Williams, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases.

Williams said in some cases, the children had preexisting conditions, but in other cases, they were otherwise healthy. He would not specify exactly how many children are currently being treated.

The findings of the OPTIMISE-C19 study worked to compare the effectiveness of monoclonal antibodies and two different treatments for outpatients with COVID-19.

The next phase of the trial, which is already in progress, will take a look at how well the current authorized treatments work against coronavirus variants, including delta, to prevent hospitalization and death.

Angelina Jolie Says Brad Pitt Continuing to Work with Weinstein ‘Hurt’

Angelina Jolie feared for children’s safety during Brad Pitt marriage

Angelina Jolie claims she feared for the safety of her children and family during her marriage to Brad Pitt — and was attacked by Harvey Weinstein early in her career.

In a bombshell interview with The Guardian, Jolie obliquely talked about her never-ending divorce from Pitt while pushing about her new book “Know Your Rights,” stammering “I … I’m still in my own legal situation,” including allegations of child abuse leveled at Pitt.

The actress claims she was scared for “my whole family” during the union.

“I’m not the kind of person who makes decisions like the decisions I had to make lightly,” she told the paper. “It took a lot for me to be in a position where I felt I had to separate from the father of my children.”

Jolie and Pitt share six children: Maddox, 20, Pax, 17, Zahara, 16, Shiloh, 15, and 13-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox. Maddox is not included in the ongoing custody battle because he is no longer a minor.

Jolie filed for divorce in 2016. Pitt was cleared of child abuse allegations made by the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services regarding an incident between him and Maddox on a plane from the US to Europe.

Jolie and Pitt have six children and are currently in a custody dispute over the five who are still minors.
Splash News

While the duo are now legally divorced, they are still battling over custody of their children.

The “Inglourious Basterds” actor was first granted joint custody of the former couple’s five minor children in May by Judge John W. Ouderkirk, but a California appeals court disqualified Ouderkirk because it was found that he did not adequately disclose business relationships with Pitt’s attorneys.

Ouderkirk, who declined to disqualify himself from their divorce when Jolie asked him to in a 2020 court filing, has a long past with the family. He even married Pitt and the “Maleficent” actress in 2014.

Pitt declined to comment to the Guardian.

When asked about the last five years, Jolie said the divorce had been “traumatic” and added: “I mean, in some ways it’s been the last decade. There’s a lot I can’t say … I think at the end of the day, even if you and a few people you love are the only people who know the truth of your life, what you fight for, or what you sacrifice, or what you’ve suffered, you come to be at peace with that, regardless of everything going on around you.”

Another issue she had with Pitt during their marriage was his willingness to work with rapist Harvey Weinstein whom, she claims, abused her.

“It was beyond a pass, it was something I had to escape,” said Jolie, who starred in Weinstein’s “Playing by Heart” when she was 21.

“I stayed away and warned people about him. I remember telling Jonny, my first husband, who was great about it, to spread the word to other guys – don’t let girls go alone with him. I was asked to do ‘The Aviator’, but I said no because he was involved. I never associated or worked with him again. It was hard for me when Brad did.”

Jolie claims Pitt asked Weinstein to work as a producer for the noir thriller, “Killing Them Softly,” which the Weinstein Company later distributed.

“We fought about (Weinstein’s involvement),” Jolie said, noting of her then husband’s apparent eagerness to work with Weinstein, “Of course it hurt.”

Angelina Jolie talks Brad Pitt and Harvey Weinstein

Photo: ISABEL INFANTES/AFP via Getty Images

The Guardian ran a long profile of actor, director, author, and activist Angelina Jolie this weekend, with both Jolie and writer Simon Hattenstone doing their apparent damnedest to try to make the piece as much as possible about Jolie’s passions, her new book about the UN-guaranteed rights of children, and her work promoting the struggles and heroism of activists and refugees in areas like Syria and Afghanistan. But—especially in light of Jolie’s long custody struggles with former husband Brad Pitt over their six children, and its connection to the topic of the rights of children—it was probably inevitable that some Angelina Jolie, Famous Hollywood Actress stuff would slip in, and, probably equally inevitably, it’s the kind of stuff that’s fairly difficult to look away from once it’s in the ether.

Specifically: Jolie talks about Harvey Weinstein, who she says assaulted her early in her career, circa her role in 1988’s Playing By Heart. “I worked with him when I was young,” Jolie says, “If you get yourself out of the room, you think he attempted but didn’t, right? The truth is that the attempt and the experience of the attempt is an assault. It was beyond a pass, it was something I had to escape.” Jolie says that she did her best to warn other young women away from working with Weinstein, and that she turned down a part in The Aviator due to his involvement. Her then-husband was less willing to take similar stances, though; Jolie notes in the profile that, “Of course it hurt” when Pitt chose to star in the Weinstein-produced Inglourious Basterds, and brought Weinstein onboard as a producer on a film in 2012. “We fought about it.”

Other Pitt material in the interview is more circumspect, at least in part because the legal issues surrounding the custody fight are still ongoing—and, in part, served as the inspiration for her writing about children’s rights. “I’m not the kind of person who makes decisions like the decisions I had to make lightly,” she notes, alluding to the divorce, and her allegations of abusive behavior against Pitt.It took a lot for me to be in a position where I felt I had to separate from the father of my children.”

The end result is a messy, but striking, profile, one often forced to talk obliquely about Jolie’s personal connection to the book she’s striving to publicize and promote. Pitt develops new COVID-19 nanobody treatment – WPXI

PITTSBURGH — A team of scientists in Pittsburgh may have cracked the code to preventing COVID-19 and curing those who contract the virus.

At the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Dr. Yi Shi and his team invented a nanobodies treatment against COVID-19 that is administered through inhalation, which many patients will find easier than shots.

Shi said inhaling the treatment may work better than current COVID-19 vaccines.

“So, basically, what this technology could do is, you can have a pretty convenient method by directly inhaling the nanobodies. And because it’s directly inhaling into the lungs, where the infection happens, this is more effective than injecting into the blood,” Shi said.

The nanobodies developed for the threatment are also active against mutations of the virus, including the highly contagious delta variant, and have been tested in hamsters, Shi said.

“We don’t have direct evidence, we are still collecting data, but based on our analysis it looks like at least two type of nanobodies remain highly effective against the delta variant,” Shi said. He added that studies found reductions of a million fold in particles found in animals’ lungs post COVID-19 infection, which he called “very encouraging.”

Recently Shi’s team worked with scientists at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, using their powerful microscopes to see how the nanobodies work against the virus, and they discovered it works in three different ways to neutralize COVID.

“I think it’s really important … to collaborate with people outside of Pittsburgh (who) have different scientists, different expertise to tackle this really important problem,” Shi said.

The team is continuing animal testing, but hope human clinical trials can start soon.
