The Memo: Democrats pine for Trump as GOP nominee

Former President Trump met a muted response from many Republicans when he launched his 2024 White House bid at Mar-A-Lago this month.

But his campaign is stirring excitement, and even some glee, from Democrats.

Members of President Biden’s party are openly pining for Trump to become the 2024 Republican nominee, believing he is just too flawed to win a general election.

They argue that the situation today is markedly different from 2016, not least because voters now know what they get with Trump in office. And Democrats are eager to have such a beatable opponent in an election that is likely to be challenging for their party.

“I am hoping for Trump’s nomination, ‘cause I think he’s the easiest candidate to beat,” former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean (D) told “The Briefing with Steve Scully” on SiriusXM this week.

Dean, a presidential candidate in 2004 and subsequently the head of the Democratic National Committee, noted that he had warned his party in 2016 that Trump could win the presidency.

Now, he insisted: “People are sick of this. They’re tired of the inflammatory stuff, they’re tired of the divisiveness, they’re tired of the lies. If Trump gets the nomination, I think we have got a pretty good chance of turning over some more states than we did the last time.”

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) told The New York Times recently that even though he thought a Trump candidacy would be “an absolute horror show” for the health of American democracy, it would be “probably a good thing” for those who want Republicans to lose in 2024.

Democratic strategist Mark Longabaugh told this column that Trump is “infinitely weaker than he was.”

“You can always get burned by making some of these predictions, but I just think he seems a little bit of a spent force,” Longabaugh said. “There are a whole bunch of dynamics that are very different from 2016.”

Even some on the right believe the Democrats have a point.

An editorial from The Wall Street Journal the day before Trump’s campaign launch savaged his chances in 2024, lamenting that after the 2020 election, “the country showed it wants to move on but Mr. Trump refuses — perhaps because he can’t admit to himself that he was a loser.”

The Journal’s editorial asserted that if Trump did press ahead with his campaign, “Republican voters will have to decide if they want to nominate the man most likely to produce a GOP loss and total power for the progressive left.”

Democrats and Trump-skeptical Republicans believe that the GOP has other candidates who could either be more persuasive to center-ground voters in a general election — or at least bring less baggage into the race than Trump.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is just as confrontational as Trump but not dogged by the same degree of indiscipline, nor by legal troubles — and he just won reelection in his usually competitive state by 19 points.

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) was elected in a Democratic-leaning state in 2021, just a year after Biden had carried it by 10 points over Trump.

Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, the daughter of Indian immigrants and the leading female contender for the GOP in 2024, would offer a much more inclusive face of the party.

Of course, Democrats — and pundits — have underestimated Trump before, most notably in 2016.

His candidacy was treated as a self-promotional gambit or a joke in many places. The Huffington Post at one point ostentatiously announced it would move coverage of his bid to the “Entertainment” section of its website. Various Democrats pronounced that Trump had no chance of winning.

Everyone knows how that turned out.

Now, however, the argument that Trump is the weakest link has several new threads.

Firstly, even though the former president retains the fervent support of his base, he is unpopular with the public at large.

An Economist-YouGov poll conducted from Nov. 13-15 found that Trump was viewed favorably by 77 percent of Republican voters but by only 41 percent of the overall population. Fifty-two percent of all adults had an unfavorable view of him — notably higher than the other potential GOP contenders the poll tested.

Secondly, the defeat of high-profile Trump-backed candidates in the midterms has strengthened the argument of those who believe the former president is an electoral liability.

Senate and gubernatorial candidates endorsed by Trump, including Mehmet Oz and Doug Mastriano in Pennsylvania, Blake Masters and Kari Lake in Arizona and Don Bolduc in New Hampshire all lost. The fate of another prominent endorsee, former football star Herschel Walker, will be decided in Georgia’s December 6 Senate runoff.

Then there is Trump’s relationship to the festering legacy of Jan. 6, 2021, the darkest day in recent American history. Even the Journal’s reliably conservative editorial page acknowledged that “the deadly riot will forever stain his legacy.”

The Capitol insurrection is just one of the factors contributing to Trump’s sea of legal woes.

Attorney General Merrick Garland recently appointed a special counsel, Jack Smith, to take over the investigation into events surrounding Jan. 6, as well as the separate probe into sensitive documents found at Mar-a-Lago.

Either of those investigations could result in a criminal indictment for Trump.

A probe in Georgia looking into efforts by Trump and his allies to overturn the 2020 result in that state could also be damaging. Meanwhile, New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) is moving forward with a massive civil suit targeting the Trump Organization.

Put it all together — and add in those voters who have simply grown weary of Trump-fueled chaos — and it’s easy to see why Democrats and some Republicans find it hard to see a path for the former president to win the White House back.

“I think we would all like Donald Trump to run again,” former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) recently told Gray Television.

“Trump has significant negatives that makes it very difficult for him to win a majority of the vote,” Republican pollster Glen Bolger told this column.

For all that, however, Trump remains the leading candidate in polls of the potential GOP 2024 field.

It looks like the Democrats might get their wish — and then they will find out if they should, again, have been careful what they wished for.

The Memo is a reported column by Niall Stanage.

A Chinese man rode a hydrogen ballon to pick pine nuts. He ended up drifting 300km

Hong Kong
CNN
 —

A man who lost control of his hydrogen balloon while harvesting pine nuts in China has been found and rescued – after landing in a forest two days later and more than 300 kilometers (186 miles) away.

The man, surnamed Hu, had been working alongside a colleague on Sunday in Hailin county, Heilongjiang province, when they lost control of the balloon. While his colleague jumped to safety, Hu missed his chance and drifted away.

He was not found until 9 a.m. local time on Tuesday when – after tracing his mobile phone signal – a rescue team made up of more than 500 people from the local police and fire departments spotted his balloon stuck in a tree, state-run Global Times reported on Wednesday.

“I almost gave up,” Hu told the Chinese state-run broadcaster CCTV. “Thanks to the rescuers, otherwise, I wouldn’t be alive.”

Hu told interviewers he had been cold and hungry during the ordeal. However, he was largely unharmed, suffering what were described as only minor injuries to his waist.

The use of hydrogen or helium balloons to harvest pine nuts has become more common in China in recent years and there are occasionally reports of pickers being swept away – though not usually as far as Hu.

In 2019, two men picking pine cones in China’s Changbai mountains reportedly lost control of their balloon and drifted 10 kilometers (6 miles) – before landing safely and being arrested for breaking aviation regulations. In another case, in 2017, a nut picker went missing near the North Korea border after his balloon became untethered.

Even without out-of-control balloons, harvesting pine nuts in China can be a dangerous business. Traditionally, pickers wearing spiked shoes climb the trees – which can grow to 20 meters (about 65 feet) – and falls can be fatal.

Harry Styles jokes he spit on Chris Pine during Venice Film Festival

Tastes like Harry Styles’ spit?

Harry Styles made fun of the speculation that he spit on Chris Pine during his Wednesday night concert in New York City.

“This is our 10th show at Madison Square Garden, it is wonderful, wonderful, wonderful to be back here,” the British singer told his fans while opening his “Love On Tour: Madison Square Garden Is Harry’s House” show.

“I just popped over to Venice to spit on Chris Pine but fear not, we’re back!”

His remarks had concert-goers screaming and cheering the singer on as he held on to his guitar.

Fans have been talking non-stop about Styles allegedly spitting on Pine’s lap in a now-viral video of the “Don’t Worry Darling” co-stars at the Venice Film Festival premiere Monday.

In the footage, the singer-turned-actor, 28, sat on the empty seat beside Pine, who had director Olivia Wilde on his other side.

After the “Late Night Talking” singer seemingly aimed his saliva at the 42-year-old actor, Pine froze mid-clap and stared into his lap with a smile before laughing to himself.

Styles, for his part, avoided eye contact with the “Wonder Woman” star in the video, waving to other audience members behind them.

Following people’s reactions, Pine’s reps immediately shut down the theories, calling them “ridiculous stories.”

“This is a ridiculous story — a complete fabrication and the result of an odd online illusion that is clearly deceiving and allows for foolish speculation,” the rep told People Tuesday.

“Just to be clear, Harry Styles did not spit on Chris Pine,” the rep continued. “There is nothing but respect between these two men, and any suggestion otherwise is a blatant attempt to create drama that simply does not exist.”

Not only have fans been hungry for more about Spitgate, but they’ve also been very attentive to the rumored drama between the star of the movie, Florence Pugh, and Wilde.

Many believed that Pugh had an issue with the romance between Wilde and Styles as she missed many chances to gush over the project via social media — all while promoting other upcoming roles.

Harry Styles and Chris Pine deny ‘spitting’ rumour sparked by viral video from Don’t Worry Darling premiere

Representatives for Don’t Worry Darling star Chris Pine have said claims that his co-star Harry Styles “spat” on him at the Venice Film Festival are a “complete fabrication”.

On Monday 5 September, a brief yet puzzling interaction between the pair at the Venice Film Festivalwent viral on social media.

Styles and Pine were at the Venice screening of Don’t Worry Darling with co-stars including lead actor Florence Pugh and director Olivia Wilde when the moment was captured on video.

In the clip, posted by Twitter user JZMaclin, it was claimed that Styles “appears to spit” on Pine while taking his assigned seat next to the actor, who then looks down at his lap and stops clapping.

By Tuesday 6 September, the clip had received over 5.5 million views, with many fans claiming Styles “definitely did” spit on his co-actor.

Other viewers dismissed the “spitting” claim and said it was more likely that the pair were joking around.

Pine’s representative has now issued a statement to People, commenting: “This is a ridiculous story – a complete fabrication and the result of an odd online illusion that is clearly deceiving and allows for foolish speculation.”

They added: “Just to be clear, Harry Styles did not spit on Chris Pine. There is nothing but respect between these two men and any suggestion otherwise is a blatant attempt to create drama that simply does not exist.”

A source close to Styles also told The Independent that the alleged incident was “not true”.

The speculation surrounding the clip was likely fuelled by the controversies that have mired the press run for Don’t Worry Darling, including a dispute over the nature of actor Shia LaBeouf leaving the project, later being replaced by Styles.

Ahead of the film’s release, Wilde claimed she fired LaBeouf, who was initially cast opposite Pugh, in 2020 in order to create a “safe, trusting environment” on set, saying that his acting process “was not conducive to the ethos” that she demands in her productions.

However, LaBeouf, who is currently awaiting trial after being sued for “relentless abuse” by his former partner, the British musician FKA twigs, denied being fired. He sent Variety a video he claimed to have received from Wilde, which shows her asking him not to quit the project.

Shortly after the Venice Film Festival press conference for Don’t Worry Darling, Alex Ritman confirmed that he “just tried to ask Olivia Wilde a question about Shia LaBeouf” at the conference but “the festival wouldn’t let me”.

The festival organisers apparently suggested Ritman’s question had already “been answered” as part of Wilde’s comments on the alleged feud with Pugh, who skipped the press conference.

News that Pugh would not be attending the panel came amid reports of a feud between herself and Wilde that have been ongoing since earlier this year.

The Midsommar actor, 26, walked the red carpet for the film’s premiere, as it was reported that she would.

You can read The Independent’s review of Don’t Worry Darling here.

This story was updated on Tuesday 6 September to include the response from Pine’s representative and a source close to Styles.

Sources deny Harry Styles spat on Chris Pine at the Don’t Worry Darling premiere | Don’t Worry Darling

Sources close to Harry Styles have denied the singer and actor spat on co-star Chris Pine at the premiere of their film, Don’t Worry Darling, at the Venice film festival on Monday.

Speculation dominated sections of the internet overnight and through Tuesday after video footage emerged which appeared to show Styles depositing spittle into Pine’s lap as he took his seat for the world premiere.

“This is not true,” said sources close to Styles on Tuesday. Pine’s rep later released a statement saying: “This is a ridiculous story — a complete fabrication and the result of an odd online illusion that is clearly deceiving and allows for foolish speculation. There is nothing but respect between these two men and any suggestion otherwise is a blatant attempt to create drama that simply does not exist.”

The suggestion of such behaviour was fuelled by what appears to have been a tense press push for the film so far. Pine appeared disengaged at Monday’s press conference, during which Olivia Wilde, the film’s director, sought to downplay rumours of a rift between her and the film’s star, Florence Pugh.

Pugh did not appear at the press conference, but did show up for the premiere, at which she appeared to consciously avoid eye contact with Wilde.

A later question during the press conference about the departure of Shia LaBeouf from the film was shut down before Wilde had the chance to reply.

Don’t Worry Darling is a thriller set in a seemingly perfect US suburb. Styles and Pugh play a couple whose marriage comes under strain when Pugh’s character uncovers a secret about a neighbour’s disappearance.

Reviews of the film have been broadly unfavourable, with critics praising Pugh but suggesting Styles’s acting prowess may be lacking.

“I have no idea what I’m doing,” said Styles at Monday’s press conference.
