The PlayStation 5 is back at Best Buy for store pickup orders (Update: sold out)

Update April 21st, 1:20PM ET: Best Buy’s site has sold out of PS5 consoles for now.

If you’re still in the market for a PlayStation 5, Best Buy just opened up another restock of the disc-based PS5 for $499.99. This restock is live now and is available to everyone, not just TotalTech subscribers, and is still likely to sell out extremely fast.

As always, to better your chances at grabbing one of these consoles, make sure to log into your Best Buy account in another browser tab while you wait in line, and make sure all your personal info, including billing and shipping addresses, are up to date. Once you’ve done that, it’s simply a matter of waiting in line and playing the waiting game. Once you’ve hit the “Add to Cart” button you are placed in the queue, so there’s no need to refresh the page. Just be prepared to verify your account while you wait.

We don’t recommend add it to your cart in multiple tabs in an attempt to improve your odds, as Best Buy’s queue system tends to get a little confused when you do so. You should, however, keep your phone handy and logged into the Best Buy app in case your PC or laptop gives you any issues.

PlayStation 5

Sony’s flagship next-gen console, which includes a disc drive, allows you to play both digital and physical games for the PS4 and PS5.

While proper preparation can certainly help, it doesn’t necessarily guarantee that you’ll be able to get a console. If you don’t get one today, remember that persistence is key, a number of staffers at The Verge have managed to get their hands on a PS5 through the same methods we’ve outlined here, so keep at it. Even if you strike out today, remember, we’re always keeping track of restocks at Best Buy and other retailers too, so make sure to check back regularly for updates.

Some must-have PS5 accessories and games

Regardless if you’re one of the lucky shoppers to get a PS5 today, games and accessories for the console are almost always available, and in some cases, are even available at a discount.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Insomniac Games’ latest adventure in the Ratchet & Clank series is the most fun entry yet. It’s also the first to launch on PS5, and it’s both a showcase for amazing graphics and fast loading speeds.

Deathloop (Deluxe, PS5)

The latest release from Arcane Studios — the team behind Prey and Dishonored — is a masterpiece in many ways, an open-ended mystery that’s thrilling, action-packed, and just the right amount of weird.

Sony Pulse 3D headset

Sony’s own wireless gaming headset is made to showcase the PS5’s 3D audio effect and also works on the PS4.

PlayStation Plus (12-month subscription)

A membership to PlayStation Plus allows PlayStation 4 and PS5 owners to play games online, download free titles every month, and take advantage of discounts on the PS Store. PS5 owners also get access to the PlayStation Plus Collection, a best-of selection of PS4 titles.

San Jose police looking for red pick-up truck following deadly hit-and-run collision killing 2 women pedestrians

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) — San Jose police are looking for a red pick-up truck following a deadly hit-and-run crash that killed two women Thursday evening.

Surveillance footage shared with ABC7 News shows the suspected driver involved, only moments after the collision.

He’s seen turning from Ocala Avenue onto Wesley Court in East San Jose.

“He tried driving into my street in order to flee faster,” Edeline Paulet said. “However, my street is a dead end street.”

Seconds later, Paulet’s cameras also captured the driver speeding off and out of the cul-de-sac. The driver, who police believe is a man, drove away from the scene.

“How can you take two innocent lives and then just flee? It’s pure selfishness,” Paulet told ABC7 News. “It’s very inconsiderate. It’s ultimately a huge tragedy.”

Just before 6:30 p.m. Thursday night, the women were walking in a painted crosswalk along Ocala Avenue and Oakton Court. The red truck then hit them and took off.

As of Friday evening, the driver remained at large.

“That could have been any of our family members out there, right? I mean, and that’s the reason why we want to find and arrest this person,” Sgt. Christian Camarillo with SJPD said. “I mean, they’re responsible for two counts, right now, of vehicular manslaughter.”

Neighbors said the victims were related- a mother and her adult daughter.

Paulet lives directly across the street from the women and was familiar with their evening strolls around the neighborhood.

“This was an every day thing. So, the fact that yesterday, their daily activity ended up with them deceased is just, it’s insane,” she added.

Other neighbors shared outrage. Angel Guzman said she feels the safety of East San Jose residents isn’t being prioritized.

She told ABC7 News, “This could’ve been prevented! This could’ve been prevented! This should’ve- no reason why- there’s no safety for us!”

“This is a residential area with schools. I’m infuriated at the fact that this isn’t the first time that it’s happened,” Guzman said. “And as long as this keep continuing, as long as their isn’t any safety infrastructure for pedestrians, this is going to keep
continuing.”

According to the city’s Department of Transportation (DOT), there is a safety improvements project already in the works.

“It’s called the Mount Pleasant Safety Improvements Project. We expect it to be done in fall of 2023. It’s still in the design phase now,” Colin Heyne with San Jose’s DOT said.

“It will have curbs bulbed out so the crossing distance is shorter. It’ll have a pedestrian refuge island in the middle of the street, and it will have those flashing beacons,” Heyne told ABC7 News.

He continued, “It seems like we can’t build these safety improvements fast enough to keep up with the pace of collisions and fatalities.”

RELATED: San Jose on pace to surpass traffic death record after 2 die in car crash

Heyne said between 2016 and 2020, there were three crashes at Ocala and Oakton, which resulted in two minor injuries.

He said across the city, there have never been this many traffic fatalities by this point in the year. Heyne added, last year the city reported 11 cases by this time of the year.

“It’s hard to find the right superlative. It’s devastating and it’s unprecedented. At this point this year, we’ve now lost 26 community members to traffic violence to crashes on our streets,” Heyne said.

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo told reporters during a Friday morning press conference, “We have been pushing on many levers to improve road safety in our city. And obviously, we have a lot more work to do.”

Thursday’s deadly hit-and-run marks San Jose’s 24th fatal traffic incident this year, and the 13th and 14th pedestrian deaths.

“They were doing what they should. They were doing what we asked people to do to keep themselves safe,” Heyne said. “This is clearly the fault of the person driving the vehicle who of course, not only collided with them, but then fled the scene. And it’s completely unacceptable.”

Sgt. Camarillo with SJPD told reporters, “It looks like a crew cab pickup truck with a bed cover on it. It’s a newer model. It’s pretty clear in the images, I think it’s a GMC.”

The suspect was last seen driving north on Capitol Expressway.

This incident is now being investigated as a felony hit and run.

The identity of the victims will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office once they confirm the victims’ identity and notify next of kin.

How To Turn Off Pickup Animations In Horizon Forbidden West

Screenshot: Sony / Kotaku

It’s a good thing Horizon Forbidden West has a bottomless inventory. Developer Guerrilla Games recently sped up looting in its robot-busting adventure through the quiet addition of one simple feature: the option to disable pickup animations.

Horizon Forbidden West, first released in February on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, is the epitome of “textbook open-world game,” for all the good and ill that entails. In my review for the game, I called out its litany of minor inconveniences, explicitly drawing attention to the fact that you have to stop moving to pick up essential resources like ridgewood (for crafting arrows), fiberzest (for brewing potions) and one million berries (for instant healing).

Guerrilla appears to have rolled out the new feature during Horizon’s most recent update—yes, the very same one that made the game even less shimmery—but didn’t denote the change in the detailed patch notes. It’s unclear why. Representatives for Sony, Horizon Forbidden West’s publisher, did not respond to a request for comment in time for publication.

Still, following the update, you can clearly see the new feature. By turning off the pickup animation option, found under the general submenu, you’ll make it so Aloy doesn’t stop in her tracks when picking up minor items. It works for most of the detritus throughout Forbidden West’s forbidden west (the ridgewood, the fiberzest, and yes, the berries). But for rarer items or ones you need to search, the ones you need to hold Triangle to interact with, you still have to stop short.

Easy rule of thumb: Loot that you can shoot off of machines, like canisters and chillwater, can get picked up instantly, as can resources from plants. But anything you find in a chest or off a robot’s busted skeleton—machine cores, circulators, braided wires, glowblast, and so on—requires you to stop moving.

On the whole, disabling pickup animations is a minor tweak that doesn’t dramatically change Horizon Forbidden West. (After crunching the numbers, I’ve found it makes the game, approximately, 1.762 percent more convenient.) But for time-crunched players, every second counts. And it’s one of many quality-of-life features that made Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima—another slickly produced first-party game from the PlayStation oeuvre—such an easily digestible game. Open-world games are overwhelmingly unwieldy enough these days. Any little thing that makes them more whelmingly wieldy is welcome in my book.

That said, I understand why disabled pickup animations wouldn’t appeal to all players. For some, that you have to stop to pick up basic loot is a design choice that makes Horizon feel realistic, immerses you in its world, and forces you to be more deliberate with your actions. But that’s what rules about this quiet update: It’s lovely to have the option now. And some fans, at least, seem happy to take full advantage of it.

“I’m so glad they added a pickup animation…toggle, it saves so much time and doesn’t break exploration continuity or pace,” one player wrote in a semi-viral tweet. “Now I’ll hoard a million berries [cherry emoji].”

NTSB: 13-year-old drove pickup in Texas crash that killed 9

HOBBS, N.M. (AP) — The investigation into this week’s fiery head-on crash in West Texas now focuses on the revelation that a 13-year-old was driving the pickup truck that struck a van, killing nine people, including six members of a college golf team and their coach.

The young teen, who is still unidentified, and a man traveling in the truck also died.

National Transportation Safety Board Vice Chairman Bruce Landsberg on Thursday revealed the truck was driven by the child. He said the truck’s left front tire, which was a spare tire, also blew out before impact

Although it was unclear how fast the two vehicles were traveling, “this was clearly a high-speed collision,” Landsberg said.

Landsberg said investigators hoped to retrieve enough information from the vehicle’s recorders, if they survived, to understand what happened. He said many in the van were not wearing seatbelts and at least one was ejected from the vehicle.

It’s not unusual for young teens to drive in that region and other more rural parts of the United States.

But “that was dumb” for a 13-year-old to be driving on a busy two-lane roadway used by oil traffic, said Gib Stevens, who leads area trucking operations for an oilfield servicing company.

One must be 14 in Texas to start taking classroom courses for a learner’s license and 15 to receive that provisional license to drive with an instructor or licensed adult in the vehicle. Department of Public Safety Sgt. Victor Taylor said a 13-year-old driving would be breaking the law.

The pickup truck crossed into the opposite lane on a darkened, two-lane highway before colliding head-on with a van, killing the boy, a man traveling with him, six New Mexico college students and a golf coach.

The University of the Southwest students, including one from Portugal and one from Mexico, and the coach were returning from a golf tournament when the vehicles collided Tuesday night. Two Canadian students were hospitalized in critical condition.

The NTSB sent an investigative team to the crash site in Texas’ Andrews County, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) east of the New Mexico state line.

University of the Southwest spokeswoman Maria Duarte declined to comment on the NTSB’s announcement about the young driver, citing the ongoing investigation.

The golf teams were traveling in a 2017 Ford Transit van that was towing a box trailer when it collided with the truck, and both vehicles burst into flames, according to NTSB spokesman Eric Weiss.

He said the vehicles crashed on a two-lane asphalt highway where the speed limit is 75 mph (120 kph), though investigators have not yet determined how fast either vehicle was traveling.

The Texas Department of Public Safety identified the deceased as: Golf coach Tyler James, 26, of Hobbs, New Mexico; and players Mauricio Sanchez, 19, of Mexico; Travis Garcia, 19, of Pleasanton, Texas; Jackson Zinn, 22, of Westminster, Colorado; Karisa Raines, 21, of Fort Stockton, Texas; Laci Stone, 18, of Nocona, Texas; and Tiago Sousa, 18, of Portugal.

Also killed were Henrich Siemens, 38, of Seminole County, Texas, and the 13-year-old boy who were in the 2007 Dodge 2500 pickup.

Critically injured aboard the van were Canadian students Dayton Price, 19, of Mississauga, Ontario, and Hayden Underhill, 20, of Amherstview, Ontario. Both were taken by helicopter to the University Medical Center in Lubbock, about 110 miles (180 kilometers) to the northeast.

“They are both stable and recovering and every day making more and more progress,” University of the Southwest Provost Ryan Tipton said Thursday of the two injured students.

“One of the students is eating chicken soup,” said Tipton, calling their recovery “a game of inches.”

Tipton said University President Quint Thurman visited the students’ parents at the hospital, illustrating the close community at the college with only about 350 on-campus students.

“Hockey was a big part of life for a while, but his true passion is golf,” said Underhill’s brother Drew Underhill.

The Mexican Federation of Golf posted an online note of condolence to the loved ones of Mauricio Sanchez.

Sousa was from Portugal’s southern coast, where he graduated from high school last summer before heading to college in the U.S., said Renata Afonso, head of the Escola Secundária de Loulé.

The University of the Southwest is a private, Christian college located in Hobbs, New Mexico, near the state line with Texas.

A memorial was set up Wednesday at the course near campus where the team practices, with flowers, golf balls and a handmade sign.

About 150 people turned out Thursday evening to remember Jackson Zinn at Texas Roadhouse, a restaurant where he worked and met his girlfriend of five months.

“We met here exactly at this table,” said Maddy Russell, 20, of Hobbs. “He was my heart.”

The mourners released around 100 blue and orange balloons into the cold whipping wind of eastern New Mexico, and they soon disappeared into the horizon.

The university said on Twitter that counseling and religious services was available on campus.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott expressed sympathy.

The teams had been taking part in a golf tournament at Midland College, about 315 miles (505 kilometers) west of Dallas.

VW CEO Diess disagrees with Tesla CEO Elon Musk, saying L3 autonomy requires Lidar (plus VW EV Pickup, summer OTA, and more)

In a wide-ranging AMA on Reddit today, VW CEO Herbert Diess provided answers to a ton of questions from the Reddit community, some of which were news to us. Importantly, he clarified Volkswagen’s position on Autonomy and ID.4 charging update timelines while waxing eloquent on a low-price VW EV and everyone’s favorite, the Microbus.

On Lidar, Diess surprisingly took a different tack than his friend, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who is adamant that Robotaxis can be made from only vision systems. Tesla’s CEO said he would be shocked if Tesla does not achieve Full Self-Driving that is safer than human drivers this year (five years ahead of everyone else).

Diess remarked that Lidar, or more specifically redundant perception, was integral to getting to Level 3 autonomy, saying:

Lidar technology is still expensive, but todays the only way to offer redundant perception to the 360 camera systems which are a must. Safety is really crucial in autonomous driving. For level 3 driving you need redundant perception.

Later on he clarified that Level 3 autonomy “requires” redundant Lidar perception. Volkswagen has partnered with MobileEye for its Lidar systems, which have been dropping in price.

Yes, definitely level 3 requires redundant Lidar perception.

As for the when, Diess was a little less specific than Tesla’s “this year” timespan.

autonomous driving is the biggest gamechanger for the automotive industry. we will be able to drive our customers safe and comfortably. This will be a gradual process from taking over responsibility on open highways in good weather conditions getting to more complex environments and weather situations worldwide. So this will be a long process of competition for a long period to come. We are building up competencies to become a serious competitor in this race.

On software in general, Volkswagen has been making huge investments.

We are building up capabilities to become self sufficient in car software, through organic growth, major acquisitions, partnerships to build up own IP and recruiting tech talents. Last year we hired around 1000 software engineers. To acquire IP we started a partnership with Bosch. To advance our image recognition capabilities we acquired the Hella Aglaia team. More to come. Currently we are investing 2 billion for software per year & CARIAD is already delivering the software updates over the air, preparing new launches and features together with our brands.

On the simplification of multiple brands and vehicle platforms to become more like Tesla, Diess replied:

Volkswagen will remain a multi brand mobility company working worldwide and being present in many segments. To reduce complexity we are focusing on platforms, even more in the future. One hardware platform SSP, unified battery cells & one shared software stack with CARIAD will ensure that we leverage our economies of scale fully. Being present in volume and premium markets and addressing many of our different customer preferences. But yes, in some segments we are still too complex in our product offering. We are making good progress in reducing complexity. Already with our MEB platform 70 percent of the car value is shared between Audi, Skoda, Cupra and Volkswagen.

The €20k VW ID.1 or ID.2 Electric car?

What the world needs right now is a low-cost EV, and Diess has confirmed that VW is working on something like the ID.Life concept we saw at IAA last year.

[Redditor]: When will we see a EV sedan that has a 300 mile range for under $25k?

[Diess]: price is a challenge. We are working on electric cars around 20k euros for entry segments.

Plug and Charge and Bi-directional charging update for Volkswagen ID.4

While the VW ID.4 has been given high marks for its hardware, owners are growing impatient about the software updates promised. One particular promised update, Plug and Charge with Bidirectional charging, has been a sore spot with vague promises for owners since last year. Now we learn VW is targeting summer for that update.

We will have a major OTA update for the ID.4 coming this summer, which will add features like Plug&Charge and Auto Hold, as well as a higher capacity onboard charge capability

And perhaps more interestingly, the update will come out in Vehicle to Home (V2H) form, allowing customers to do things like power their appliances from the car – or power the whole house in a blackout. It will be interesting to see the output and how it compares to the Hyundai E-GMP platform output of 2-4kW.

Bidirectional charging will be available this year for all ID. Models with 77 kWh battery, also via OTA update. In the beginning we will only offer Vehicle-to-home. This means you can run your dishwasher with electricity from abroad 😉

Diess later clarified this would be on all ID.4 77kWh vehicles sold:

Yes, we will offer Plug & Charge on MY23 ID.4s and on earlier cars with an OTA update. Just tested it together with Elke (https://www.linkedin.com/in/elke-temme/) – really convenient, high time for introduction.

Volkswagon pickup? Diess thinks that’s a good idea.

Diess played innocent when the idea of a Volkswagen Pickup for the USA was proffered.

[Redditer] Hello Herbert, we like the VW designs a lot. My question is, will there be an electric pickup truck like the ford f150 lightning for the usa?

[Diess] Good idea!

VW already makes ICE pickups and sells them outside the United States, so the company isn’t a total newbie when it comes to the form factor. But a new entrant into the US electric pickup market would be good for all involved, especially if they are made in Chattanooga.

Diess on the future

The VW CEO was asked what the future held for VW and the car industry, specifically 25 years from now.

25 years are very difficult to predict. Advancements in technology are coming fast. My guess: All cars will be able to drive autonomously, very safe, probably no accidents at all anymore. Emission free, very comfortable – cars will take you where you want to go and when you want to go. Still there will be precious brands for different customer preferences, still cars will be the most important means of transport. But totally safe, convenient and sustainable.

Electrek’s Take

It is hard not to like an automotive CEO who does an AMA answering questions from customers and fans genuinely – spelling and grammar mistakes included. (Cut him some slack!)

As for self-driving, Diess has a steep learning curve but seems to have a realistic expectation of what VW can accomplish. The CEO continues to impress us with his clear vision of the EV/Autonomous future. In the short term however, he needs to get those ID.4 updates out the door.

2021: The revolutionary year in pickup trucks

There was a time when pickups came in a wide variety of shapes and sizes from Chevrolet El Caminos muscle trucks to cute little Volkswagen pickups and even flat-faced “cab forward” trucks. Over time, though, full-size and somewhat smaller midsize trucks of traditional size and shape have taken over. In the past year, though, some of that old breadth and creativity is returning as more Americans ditch cars for trucks.

About a decade ago, cars — meaning not trucks or SUVs — made up more than half of all vehicles sold in America, according to data from Cox Automotive, a company that owns various automotive websites and auto dealer services firms. Now only about 20% of Americans buy traditional passenger cars. Pickups, on the other hand, have gone from less than 14% of the US market to now having just as much market share as cars. The remaining 60% of the market is mostly SUVs and some vans.

With more and more Americans buying trucks, companies like Ford, Stellantis and even Hyundai started looking for yet unexplored niches in the search for customers who never knew they wanted a truck.

Even for mid-size trucks, like the Toyota Tacoma and Ford Ranger, competition has been getting tougher. This year, Nissan came out with a (finally after more than a decade) redesigned Frontier. It’s much more handsome, with a completely new body, new interior, and enough mechanical improvements to make a viable competitor to the well-aged Tacoma, the undisputed king of this category. Not surprisingly, sales of the new Frontier are up briskly, according to Cox Automotive.

Trucks got much smaller

Going even smaller, Ford came out with the Maverick. At a glance it looks like just a small pickup, but under its conservative exterior, it breaks all the rules. Sharing much of its engineering with the Ford Escape and Bronco Sport SUVs — although it looks nothing like either one — the Ford Maverick can be purchased with all-wheel-drive but the base model is front-wheel-drive. That’s almost unheard of for a pickup.

Normally, base model pickups are rear-wheel-drive, putting the powered wheels underneath the cargo bed for the best traction when carrying heavy loads. The Maverick’s $20,000 base model, less than half the price of the average new vehicle, is a hybrid as well. Hybrid trucks are not new. Ford sells a hybrid version of the F-150 but, with the Maverick, Ford made the hybrid the default entry-level version, making hybridization the norm.

But for all its hidden oddities, the Maverick still looks, basically, like a pickup. It has a squared-off front end and a simple grid-like grille. Its cargo bed and the cab, the part where people sit, don’t quite meet at right angle like they do in most trucks, but that fact is partly hidden by black plastic. Ford designers clearly went out of their way to make the Maverick look like a traditional pickup.

Hyundai designers, on the other hand, had no problems breaking design tradition with the new Santa Cruz. In fact, the Korean automaker’s executives insist the Hyundai Santa Cruz is not a pickup truck but rather a “sport adventure vehicle.” OK, but it’s really a pickup truck.

Just like the Ford Maverick, it’s a pickup based on front-wheel-drive crossover SUV engineering. Unlike the Maverick, though, the Santa Cruz looks and feels exactly like that. From the outside, it looks like a crossover, but it’s as if someone took a giant ice cream scoop to the back end. On the inside, the slightly pricier Santa Cruz also looks much nicer than the Ford, which has a distinct work-truck vibe. The Santa Cruz is also much more refined — even fun — to drive compared to the stiffer and noisier Maverick.

Trucks got electric power

2021 also saw the first of an expected wave of electric pickups. Rivian started delivering its first few R1T pickups to customers and it’s already won MotorTrend’s Truck of the Year award. Just last week, General Motors started production of the GMC Hummer EV pickup.

Electric pickups once seemed like an oxymoron. Trucks were all about strength and capability while early electric cars seemed like little pods for driving around town. But electric motors, connected to sufficiently powerful batteries, happen to provide immense pulling power. Adding an additional electric motors creates simple and very capable all-wheel-drive. Also, powerful truck batteries can be used to run power tools, and even charge up other electric vehicles. It turns out electric motors can be ideal for trucks.

Trucks like the Rivian and the Hummer won’t be competing with one another. The Rivian R1T might be expensive, with prices starting at almost $68,000, but prices for the first Hummer EVs coming off the line start at over $100,000. The smooth-driving but off-road capable Rivian is intended as camping gear for outdoor enthusiasts. The Hummer EV is being marketed as a performance truck. The Rivian R1T is no slouch when it comes to speed and power — it can go from zero to 60 miles an hour in about three seconds — but it’s built more for campers than for racers.

In 2022, electric truck competition will start getting really heavy. The Ford F-150 Lightning will go into production. A few days into the new year, General Motors will unveil its new Chevrolet Silverado EV electric truck, which CEO Mary Barra has called “unmatched.” That truck is supposed to go into production in 2023. By that time, the wedge-shaped Tesla Cybertruck might also be in production at a new Tesla factory in Texas.

Tesla reportedly has taken over a million refundable $100 deposits for its Cybertruck. Ford stopped taking such deposits for the Lightning after collecting 200,000 reservations. Ford also recently announced it would double its planned factory output for the Lightning given unexpectedly strong customer demand.
Many of the potential customers, according to Ford, are not even current pickup truck owners.

After this year and next, the world of pickup trucks, loaded up with tradition and towing heavy expectations, will never be the same.

The last stand of the piston engine

This past year also brought some competition for Ford in a very different part of the truck market. The Ford F-150 Raptor has had the high-performance off-road pickup market all to itself for over a decade. If truck shoppers were rational customers looking only for the vehicle that best suits their day-to-day needs, hardly anyone would buy a Ford Raptor, a truck designed for high-speed desert racing. But Ford sells lots of Raptors and, it must be assumed, “rational” doesn’t have much to do with the purchase process. With prices starting at at about $65,000, it’s one of Ford’s most profitable models.

Ford revealed an updated version of the extra-tall, extra-wide 450 horsepower truck this year. The latest version is available with even bigger tires — 37 inches tall — and hi-tech suspension that checks the terrain 500 times a seconds and softens or stiffens automatically.

But this was also the year that Ford’s competitor, Stellantis, came out with the Ram TRX, with a starting price $10,000 higher than the Ford’s. For that money, the TRX offers much more power. Its 6.2-liter supercharged V8 can produce up to 702 horsepower. Given that buyers are paying luxury car prices, the TRX also has a nicely appointed interior. A hard press on the gas pedal brings on a whoosh from the big supercharger along with a rush of acceleration. (Aside from its flare-fendered width and nearly bottomless thirst for fuel, it drives pretty nicely on paved roads.)

Ford has promised a higher-horsepower version of the Raptor coming soon, so this dinosaur fight is not over.

If you’ve still got some final names to check off your gift list, don’t miss out. From headphones to air fryers, small beverage coolers to smart home accessories, this sale at Best Buy has something for everyone. It’s worth noting that not all items will be available in all locations, so you’ll want to check local inventory on the pages for the products of interest to see if you can select for in-store or curbside pickup. Some of the discounts here are the same ones we’ve been seeing since early in November and others are recent price drops just for this.

With the arrival of Beats new Fit Pro earbuds, I assumed we’d see some nice discounts on the earlier and less feature-rich Beats Studio Buds, which list for $150, or only $50 less than the new $200 Beats Fit Pro. I predicted we might see their price dip to $100 and sure enough, that’s what their price is now (and a new low).

The Beats Studio Buds look a lot like the rumored stemless AirPods that people were talking about but never materialized — as AirPods anyway. Geared toward both iOS and Android users, they’re missing a few key features on the Apple side of things (there’s no H1 or W1 chip), but they’re small, lightweight earbuds that are comfortable to wear and offer good sound. They fit most ears securely, including mine — I run with them without a problem — but others may find a better fit with the Beats Fit Pro and their integrated wing tips.

If you don’t already have an air fryer, Black Friday is a great time to pick one up. This Chefman 8-quart air fryer has a large capacity, multiple cooking presets and more. It’s easy to clean and cooks great food, so what are you waiting for?

Ninja

The Ninja coffee system will let you select from classic, rich, over ice, or specialty grounds or coffee pods (and yes, it is compatible with K-cups) to create coffeehouse-style drinks. It also has a built-in, fold-away frother for milk or milk alternatives. Pieces of the machines are removable and dishwasher safe for easy cleaning, and there’s an independent hot water system with hot and boil temperature settings to make instant soup, oatmeal and hot cocoa.

The Sony WH-XB910Ns are a great, budget friendly option for noise-canceling headphones. They boast up to 30 hours of battery life and can support two Bluetooth connections simultaneously for almost effortless switching between devices. They were named one of our favorite pairs of Sony headphones from this year.

Acer

The Acer Chromebook is a great blend of durable, portable and accessible. It boasts 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, so it’s ideal for browsing and online work, but not too much more than that. And with 15 hours of battery life and weighing only 0.74 pounds. It’s great for getting some work done on the road.

GM Starts Delivering Its Luxury Electric Hummer EV Pickup Truck

More than a year after its unveiling, General Motors proudly announced that it was now delivering its Hummer EV Edition 1 Pickup, a 9,000-pound (4,082 kilograms) luxury electric beast with a 1,000-horsepower motor that can go from 0 to 60 mph (96 kph) in three seconds. The message: You can do your part to save the planet, if you’re rich that is.

In a press release on Friday, GM announced the beginning of “a new era” for the company, marked by the delivery of its first next-generation electric vehicles. Unfortunately, that new era is headlined by the Hummer EV Edition 1, a $110,295 car with an estimated 329 miles (529 kilometers) of range, “modular sky panels,” the ability to do a “crabwalk” and drive diagonally, and an “extract mode” to navigate over boulders and water.

Luckily, this isn’t GM’s last EV. The company, which is working towards selling only zero emission cars and trucks by 2035, has plans to release 30 new electric vehicles over the next four years. According to the release, two-thirds of those new cars will be available in North America.

“Both commercial and retail customers will benefit from the EV experience, from exhilarating acceleration to low cost of operation, versatility, and ability to customize after the sale,” GM president Mark Reuss said in a statement. “GM is ideally positioned to provide EVs for every customer in every segment, retail or commercial.”

While I do get that it makes business sense to create an electric vehicle for certain customer segments, debuting a luxury electric truck like this when the planet is in crisis is flabbergasting. We need to electrify everything, and fast, to tackle climate change. Although the all-electric Hummer EV Edition 1 is an (unnecessary) example of the change we need, its price tag will keep it out of reach for the majority, which is exactly the opposite of what is needed. (Electrek reports that less expensive versions of the Hummer EV, beginning at $80,000, will begin to hit the market over the next two years).

Don’t be fooled into thinking that GM doesn’t know how to make cars that benefit the planet and its business, though. Besides starting to ship the Hummer EV Edition 1, GM also began delivering its BrightDrop EV600 electric delivery trucks to customer FedEx, which has ordered 500 EV600s. The EV600 can travel 250 miles (402 kilometers) on a maximum charge and carry up to 2,200 pounds (997 kilograms).

FedEx chief sustainability officer Mitch Jackson told CNBC that sustainability is a core part of the business and that it was looking at the scalability of electric vehicles.

“We use a lot of vehicles in our operation, and we need a lot of vehicles in order to make a sizeable difference in our operations,” Jackson said, according to the outlet. “We need that scale, and we need that production capability.”

The world also needs a lot of electric vehicles to make a sizeable difference in its response to the climate crisis. Those vehicles need to be accessible to all and designed with the majority of society’s needs in mind. In other words, they’re very different from the Hummer EV Edition 1.

The Ford F-100 Eluminator is a DYI electric pickup

Now this is a custom truck.

Ford has converted a 1978 F-100 Custom pickup to electric power using a new motor that’s now on sale for car builders.

The F-100 Eluminator started its life as an ICE-powered 1978 model.
(Ford)

Ford swapped the F-100’s 302 cubic-inch V8 drivetrain for a pair of Eluminator e-crate motors that are the same ones used in the Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition SUV.

The engine bay cover is equipped with a window exposing the front Eluminator motor.
(Ford)

The motors are rated at 281 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque each and give the truck a combined output of 480 horsepower and 634 lb-ft in this configuration.

Enough space was left in the engine bay for a “frunk” to be installed.
(Ford)

The Eluminators are priced at $3,900 each and require a traction inverter, power controls and battery to operate, which aren’t currently available in the Ford Performance catalog, but will be added at a later date.

For the F-100 build, which made its debut at the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) Show in Las Vegas, Ford borrowed the 88 kilowatt-hour battery and required electronics from a Mustang Mach-E.

The F-100’s refreshed interior also features the digital instrument cluster, touchscreen infotainment system display, seats and steering wheel from the Mustang Mach-E, with the hub on the wheel embossed with an F-100 logo.

The interior is equipped with digital displays from the Mach-E.

There was also enough room left in the engine bay to fit a front trunk, or “frunk” like many modern electric vehicles have today, including next year’s F-150 Lightning production electric pickup.
