Alleged Jan. 6 rioter photographed in Pelosi’s office convicted of 8 counts
An Arkansas man who entered the U.S. Capitol with rioters on Jan. 6, 2021, and was photographed lounging at a desk in then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office suite was convicted Monday of eight federal crimes related to the incursion.
Richard “Bigo” Barnett, now 62, who left a crude written message for Pelosi before departing the office suite with a purloined envelope bearing the California Democrat’s digital signature, sat impassively as a jury in U.S. District Court in Washington delivered its decisions.
After nine days of testimony and legal arguments in the trial, the panel began deliberating Monday morning and reached guilty verdicts on all eight counts against Barnett, including four felonies, in less than two hours.
The most serious charge he faced, obstructing an official government proceeding, carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. But advisory sentencing guidelines used by the court are likely to recommend a much shorter term in his case.
Although a prosecutor argued that Barnett should be jailed pending his sentencing, scheduled for May 3, Judge Christopher R. Cooper allowed him remain on home detention in his small hometown in the Ozarks.
Barnett, an ardent supporter of former president Donald Trump, was carrying a walking stick equipped with a high-voltage stun device when he entered the Capitol. Congress was meeting that day to confirm President Biden’s victory in the November election, despite Trump’s debunked claims that he had been denied reelection because of massive voter fraud.
Besides obstructing an official proceeding, Barnett was convicted of two felonies related to carrying a dangerous weapon in the Capitol and a felony charge of civil disorder. The four misdemeanors he was convicted of included theft of government property, meaning the envelope.
Afghan opposition groups outraged at UN employees photographed under Taliban flag
The U.N. has apologized after employees took photos under Taliban flags during a visit to Afghanistan.
“We are aware of this photo which was taken while the Deputy Secretary-General was meeting the de facto leaders in Afghanistan,” Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the U.N. secretary-general, told Fox News Digital. “Her security had taken her to that meeting and were waiting next door.”
“The photo should never have been taken,” Dujarric stressed. “It was a mistake, and we apologize for it.”
The pictures first surfaced on social media Thursday night, showing U.N. personnel in Kabul taking a picture under Taliban flags.

Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammad, the U.N.’s most senior female official, had visited Afghanistan in an effort to address concerns over women’s rights in the country – particularly access to higher education and limits on women in the workplace.
The delegation is the most senior group of officials to visit the country since the Taliban took power in 2021.
Mohammad looked to speak with senior Taliban leaders to convince them to reverse direction on the restrictions, which have imperiled humanitarian operations since women cannot participate, according to the BBC.

Ali Maisam Nazary, head of foreign relations for the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan, posted the photos and denounced them as “insensitive.”
“The U.N. personnel in Kabul taking a photo with a terrorist group’s flag brings the United Nation’s impartiality & integrity into question,” Nazary wrote. “We kindly ask Antonio Guterres to investigate this matter & for UNAMA News to prevent such insensitive actions that can tarnish its reputation.”

Nazary separately told Fox News Digital that the photos were “unfortunate” and reiterated concerns over U.N. impartiality and integrity.
“This comes as the Taliban terrorists are allowing Afghanistan to become a hub for international terrorism, and they are increasing their oppression on citizens, especially women,” Nazary said. “Such acts cause us to question the U.N.’s impartiality and integrity in Afghanistan, and we kindly ask Secretary-General Guterres to investigate this matter and prevent any biased move on the part of U.N. personnel visiting Afghanistan in the future.”
FORMER AFGHAN FEMALE LAWMAKER FATALLY SHOT BY GUNMEN IN KABUL HOME
Suhail Shaheen, the Taliban’s chosen representative to the U.N. and former spokesman for the Taliban, told Fox News Digital that the words on the Taliban flag belong to “Muslims all over the world.”

“The words written on the white cloth are words that Muslims all over the world believe in, i.e. there is no God but Allah, Mohammad (pbuh) is the prophet of Allah,” Shaheen said. “It belongs to all Muslims, not one nation or government.”
“Anyone who doesn’t believe this are not called Muslims, or say something against it, commits blasphemy,” he added.

The U.N. delegation met with acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, who stressed the need for international recognition to help empower the government, along with the removal of sanctions that limit the government’s funding.

NASA’s Orion photographed the Earth and Moon from a quarter-million miles away
The Orion spacecraft’s record-setting distance from Earth made for stunning photography, apparently. NASA has shared a photo taken by the Artemis I vehicle on Monday showing both Earth and the Moon in the background. Much like some Apollo photography or Voyager 1’s “Pale Blue Dot,” the picture puts humanity’s home in perspective — our world is just one small planet in a much larger cosmos.
Orion took the snapshot around its maximum distance from Earth of 268,563 miles. That’s the farthest any human-oriented spacecraft has traveled, beating even Apollo 13’s record of 248,655 miles from 1970. Notably, Artemis I represents the first time explorers intended to travel this far out — Apollo 13 only ventured so far from Earth because NASA’s emergency flight plan required the Moon as a slingshot.
Ars Technica notes that this early Artemis flight has so far surpassed NASA’s expectations. While the mission team has only completed 31 out of 124 core objectives so far, it’s adding goals like extended thruster tests. About half of the remaining activities are in progress, with the rest largely dependent on returning to Earth.
Orion is expected to splash down off the San Diego coast on December 11th. The Artemis program has dealt with numerous delays, and now isn’t expected to land humans on the Moon until 2025 or 2026. NASA originally hoped for a lunar landing in 2024. Still, Artemis I’s current performance suggests the space agency’s efforts are finally paying off.

Tianwen-1: China’s Mars probe has photographed the entire red planet
Tianwen-1, which means “quest for heavenly truth,” was launched in 2020 and landed on Mars last May, when the Zhurong rover on board started its mission of patrolling and exploring the planet while the orbiter spun overhead.
In a statement, China’s National Space Agency (CNSA) said the probe has now completed all its assigned tasks, including taking medium-resolution images covering the entire planet.
The images, posted by the space agency on social media, show the Martian landscape’s rugged terrain: dusty red dunes, shield volcanoes, impact craters, the south pole ice sheet, and the cliffs and ridges of the Valles Marineris canyons — one of the largest canyons in our solar system.
The images were taken by the probe’s orbiter, which circled Mars 1,344 times, capturing images of the planet from every angle, while the rover explored the surface, CNSA said.
The six-wheeled rover carried scientific instruments on its journey, gathering information about Mars’ geological structure, atmosphere, environment and soil. The probe has collected 1,040 gigabytes of raw scientific data, which has been processed by scientists on Earth and handed to research teams for further study, the agency said.
CNSA said it had shared the orbiter’s flight information with NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA), and the scientific data will be available to international scientists “at an appropriate time.”
With temperatures dropping during the Martian winter, as well as poor sand and dust conditions, the rover entered a dormant mode on May 18 that will last through the harsh season before its expected awakening in December — when the landing area will enter early spring, bringing better weather.
The orbiter will continue conducting tests and preparing for future tasks, the space agency said.
Prior to China’s success with Tianwen-1, only the United States and the former Soviet Union had landed a spacecraft on the surface of Mars — but India, the ESA, and the United Arab Emirates have sent spacecraft to enter the planet’s orbit.
With Tianwen-1, China was the first nation to attempt sending both an orbiter and a rover on its first homegrown Mars mission. NASA, for instance, sent multiple orbiters to Mars before ever attempting a landing.

See How Man Photographed the Andromeda Galaxy from His Backyard
In the summer of 2020, the world was enthralled with the Comet Neowise, which only makes an appearance every 6,800 years. Brennan Gilmore was so enthralled that it kicked off a passion for astrophotography that continues today. Two years after beginning his journey photographing the stars, he has accomplished a major goal: photographing the Andromeda galaxy.
Our neighbor in the sky, Andromeda is a spiral galaxy similar to our own Milky Way. Sitting 2.5 million light-years away, it remains a bright spot in the atmosphere and was something that Gilmore first photographed two years ago. However, it took him some time to build up the skills and acquire the equipment to achieve an image he was happy with. The final result was well worth the wait, as the image went viral after he posted it online and even ended up in Newsweek.
Gilmore captured the stunning image from his backyard in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the course of several nights. Using a four-inch telescope and astronomy camera, he took hundreds of photos of Andromeda. From there, he carefully culled his images, using only the very best for the final photograph.
In the end, all of his efforts paid off. The final photo, created from 290 individual frames, is incredibly detailed. Many of Andromeda’s one trillion stars are visible through its gas halo. Gilmore thought of every detail, including the exposure so that even the core of the galaxy isn’t overexposed. This allows viewers to drink in the stars and ponder on this far away neighbor, which is actually headed toward our own galaxy.
For Gilmore, seeing his Andromeda photo get widespread recognition is a beautiful end to a long journey. “It felt great to have the public appreciate and feel inspired by a photo which was essentially years in the making. Hopefully, it inspires people to try to photograph space, or at least spend some time under the stars.”
