Kingsbury has to go after Cardinals’ embarrassing loss to Rams

INGLEWOOD — The Cardinals owe their fans an apology. Especially the brave-hearted believers who swaggered into SoFi Stadium on Monday night expecting their football team to do the same.

Then it’s time for a change.

A new plan. A new head coach. And to complete the reboot, the team should unveil a host of brand new uniforms, as a cosmetic gesture of good faith.

It’s time to raise expectations across the board.

The Cardinals embarrassed themselves on Monday, slinking into the offseason with a 34-11 playoff loss to the Rams. In the process, they embarrassed every Arizonan who clung to delusions that the team would regain its Road Warrior mentality; that Playoff Kyler would be unstoppable; and that the return of J.J. Watt would provide all the necessary fuel.

“We put up an embarrassing performance,” Watt said. “There’s no other way to put it, really.”

As a result, the Cardinals joined the pile of NFL wildcard roadkill. But this was not a team that scrapped and clawed their way into the postseason. The Cardinals were 10-2 on Dec. 5. They were once the best team in professional football.

Don’t dare call this progress.

“A massive failure,” Watt said.

And yet Kingsbury will surely return for a fourth year in 2022. General Manager Steve Keim recently claimed his head coach was doing a “phenomenal job” and that he and owner Michael Bidwill were very happy with his performance.

But running it back yet again with this head coach, on the mantra of baby steps is a dangerous shell game, and I’m not sure why consecutive second-half collapses continue to be tolerated. I’m also certain that many disgusted fans will reject the incoming propaganda and claims of baby steps. And what I fear is that the whole regime has become too comfortable.

Bidwill is very friendly with Keim, who has produced consecutive playoff-worthy rosters and doesn’t deserve to lose his job. But Keim is clearly too content with a controllable head coach that has very little ego and defers to the GM at all costs.

The fear is they’re getting soft because the wealth never stops, even though winning seems to come to a halt midway through the season. Bidwill has a new team plane and a sportsbook opening soon and the NFL billions just keeps rolling in, year after year. And from Kingsbury to Markus Golden, too much credit was too easily given to the rival Rams. As if blowout losses in the postseason were just part of the workplace hazards in the NFL.

Of course, this loss goes beyond Kingsbury. This performance will leave a mark on Kyler Murray, who joins a small list of NFL quarterbacks with abysmal playoff debuts. His daffy decision to throw the ball up for grabs from his own end zone turned into a laughable Pick Six for the Rams, and it’s not the first time he’s panicked from his own end zone this season. Murray looked rattled and skittish and wholly uncomfortable for the first 2.5 quarters. He will need to atone for this in the future.

But in the NFL, the head coach sets the tone for everything. Did you see how 49ers boss Kyle Shanahan dialed up the perfect opening drive to get Jimmy Garoppolo rolling in their road victory at Dallas?  Same with Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford, a quarterback who exorcised his own playoff demons on Monday. That’s what impact coaches do in big moments.

Too often, Kingsbury gets swallowed by these moments. And on Monday, he failed to get his quarterback in a comfort zone, failed to get James Conner rolling early, failed to get Zach Ertz involved in the offense.

“Experience is a big part of it,” Kingsbury said. “There’s only one way to experience playoff football and that’s to go through it. You just have to go through these moments, learn from it, grow from it and use it as motivation.”

Yes, experience matters. But they’ve been at this for three years. And for those keeping score:  The Cardinals are 0-for-5 over the past two seasons in playoff-clinching games. They lost five of their last seven games in 2020-21, and five of their last six games in 2021-22. If you haven’t noticed, they do not function well under pressure. Not when the games really matter.

“Coming out the way we did, you’re not going to win playoff games,” Christian Kirk said.

And who wants to cheer on a team like that?

Suns’ Mikal Bridges forces Steph Curry to have career-worst shooting night

Phoenix Suns forward Mikal Bridges was arguably the player of the game in Tuesday night’s win at Footprint Center.

Bridges may have only scored two points in the 104-96 victory over the Golden State Warriors, but it was his defensive play that grabbed everyone’s attention.

While guarding Warriors point guard Steph Curry — one of the greatest shooters in NBA history — the Suns forward held the former MVP to only 12 points on the night.

Curry went 4-for-21 (19%) shooting in the contest and 3-for-14 (21.4%) from his trademark three-point shot in just under 36 minutes played.

In fact, those metrics are the worst of his career when taking over 20 shots in a single game.

Curry also only had two assists while turning the ball over twice and finishing tied with center Kevon Looney for the game’s worst plus-minus at -17.

“Mikal’s defense,” Suns head coach Monty Williams praised postgame.

“Steph missed some shots but I think the respect that Mikal has for Steph and our team defense showed him bodies tonight. We tried to make it as tough on him as we could. We just had a number of guys step up.”

Bridges finished the night with four steals, which remarkably wasn’t the most by a single player in the contest as Suns point guard Chris Paul had five.

He did, however, play the most minutes of any player (41:24) and was tied with Paul for a game-high plus-minus of +21.

“It’s just a whole team effort,” Bridges said postgame. “What I really did was just be aggressive and be attached with a lot of screens and a lot of reds.

“But it’s a whole team thing because if one guy messes up on the switch, there’s a slip or it’s a three for him. So it’s a team effort. I think our coverages and what the coaches put together in our schemes was really good and we executed it pretty well.”

Schultz further details expected report coming on Suns’ Robert Sarver

Sports reporter Jordan Schultz reported on Friday afternoon that there is a story in the works that details allegations of racism, sexism and sexual harassment against Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver.

Later in the day, the Suns released a statement on their own, calling that story not yet published as something “based on lies, innuendo, and a false narrative to attack our organization and its leadership.”

Schultz, who according to his Twitter bio is not currently employed by ESPN, joined Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo to provide further clarity on his report of the report.

“This report is a monster,” he said. “As bad as you might think it might be for us to be having this conversation, it’s worse. What I was told some of the things that are going to surface in this report, including sexual harassment, it is jaw-dropping. There’s just no way that with all of these people on the record, men and women, that he’s going to be able to survive this in my eyes.”

Schultz said he is reporting that former head coach Earl Watson and former general manager Ryan McDonough are both on the record in the story.

“What I was told was that there has been a kind of sweep under the rug culture that he has fostered,” Schultz said of Sarver.

Schultz was not able to share major details of the reporting, which Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro reports has over 50 people interviewed for.

The Suns’ statement on the story, which, once again, has yet to be released, includes Sarver’s denial of any racism or sexism.

“Even hints of racism or sexism in our culture today are toxic and damaging and should not be lightly raised,” the statement said. “I categorically deny any and all suggestions that I used disparaging language related to race or gender.”

Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker will miss Sunday’s All-Star festivities due to a left knee sprain, the league announced on Friday.

He sustained the injury in Thursday night’s 120-98 win over the Golden State Warriors.

The team said in a press release that he is considered day-to-day and will be re-evaluated following the All-Star break.

Booker had previously been chosen by commissioner Adam Silver as a replacement for injured Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis.

The former Kentucky Wildcat was selected No. 3 overall by Team KD captain Kevin Durant in Thursday night’s NBA All-Star Draft.

Booker was also slated to participate in his fifth three-point contest, which he came out as the victor of in the 2018 edition.

Utah Jazz guard Mike Conley Jr. will replace Booker in both the All-Star Game and three-point contest on Sunday night in Atlanta.

The selection will be the first of Conley’s 14-year career.

Suns’ Devin Booker snubbed, Chris Paul named NBA All-Star reserve

The Phoenix Suns will have an All-Star this season but there’s a good case they should have had two. While point guard Chris Paul was named to the Western Conference All-Star reserves on Tuesday, shooting guard Devin Booker was not.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania first reported the news.

For the second straight year, Booker was not named to the original list of All-Star reserves. He was an injury replacement for Portland’s Damian Lillard last year and could be in line for that spot again with injured Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis among the reserves.

His per-game numbers this season are down, but his efficiency is up. Booker is averaging 24.7 points, 4.3 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game while shooting a career-high 50% from the field. He’s also hitting 38% from three-point range.

Booker is coming on strong of late for the 20-10 Suns, who have won 12 of their last 14 heading into Tuesday. His monthly averages reflect his steady tune-up as the year has gone on, as he averaged 20.2 points in December, 24.3 in January and 26.8 points so far in February.

While coaches’ votes for the All-Star reserves were already due before Phoenix beat the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night, Booker’s 34-point outburst in 29 minutes exemplified his impact on the team as it cruised to a second-straight 30-plus-point victory.

“There’s no doubt about it,” head coach Monty Williams said after the 132-100 win. “Nobody can debate Book’s not an All-Star. End of story.”

Paul, in his 16th NBA season, clinched his spot on the exhibition roster by ranking sixth in the league in assists per game (8.5), including a 19-assist performance against the Pelicans on Friday night.

Paul, who was acquired from the Oklahoma City Thunder via trade this offseason, is averaging 16.6 points, 8.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game while shooting 49% from the field and 40% from deep.

Paul has made 10 trips to the All-Star Game heading into this season. He made a yearly pilgrimage between 2008 and 2016 and appeared once again last season with Oklahoma City.

Paul will be joined on this year’s Western Conference All-Star roster by starting guards Stephen Curry and Luka Doncic, plus starting frontcourt players LeBron James, Nikola Jokic and Kawhi Leonard.

The NBA All-Star Game will be held at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena on Sunday, March 7.

Here are the Western Conference reserves reported by Charania:

Anthony Davis, Los Angeles Lakers

Paul George, Los Angeles Clippers

Rudy Gobert, Utah Jazz

Damian Lillard, Portland Trail Blazers

Donovan Mitchell, Utah Jazz

Chris Paul, Phoenix Suns

Zion Williamson, New Orleans Pelicans
