Philadelphia 76ers’ Dwight Howard ejected after receiving ’20 title ring in return to Staples Center

LOS ANGELES — Dwight Howard flashed a wide smile across his face before the Philadelphia 76ers faced the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night, receiving his 2020 championship ring with fellow former Laker Danny Green.

It didn’t take long for Howard’s expression to change from cheer to chagrin.

Howard, making his return to Staples Center, was ejected between the first and second quarters, as referee Kane Fitzgerald called a technical foul on Howard for intentionally walking into Lakers big man Montrezl Harrell on his way to Philadelphia’s bench after the buzzer sounded.

Howard and Harrell had already been called for double technical fouls for getting tangled up with 1 minute, 8 seconds remaining in the first quarter, making the second technical an automatic disqualification for Howard.

Harrell pushed Howard away from him and continued toward the Lakers’ bench, turning to wave goodbye to the three-time Defensive Player of the Year winner while he pleaded his case with Fitzgerald.

The Sixers won 109-101.

“I just thought it was a very selfish play,” Philadelphia coach Doc Rivers said of Howard. “You got one tech, you can’t get another one. We just have to have better discipline. I get it. I know there’s a lot of emotion. But we had one center on our team, and he got thrown out. I was not very happy with that one. I know it’s an emotional game. But he’s a veteran. We got to have better discipline.”

What prompted the pair’s bad blood is unclear, but Harrell, last season’s Sixth Man of the Year while playing for the LA Clippers, might not have ever joined the Lakers in the offseason had Howard not signed with the Sixers.

At the outset of free agency in November, Howard tweeted, “I’m staying right where I belong. Laker nation I love y’all. Purple and gold never gets old.”

In a bizarre turn of events, though, he quickly deleted the tweet and ended up inking a one-year, $2.6 million contract with Philadelphia. Later that day, the Lakers agreed to a two-year, $19 million deal with Harrell.

Harrell, when asked what caused the altercation with Howard, said, “I don’t know, honestly. I don’t even care to be real with you. I was just playing basketball, man.”

He added, “I’m not backing down from nobody, man. I don’t take that lightly. I don’t take none of that disrespect. You’re not gonna push me all around the court and just feel like you’re gonna big-boy me and just attack me or whatever. It’s not in my blood, it will never be in my blood. I don’t care what nobody feels about it, I don’t care who don’t like me. It is what it is.”

Alain Vigneault ‘truly embarrassed’ as Philadelphia Flyers drop a 9-0 decision to New York Rangers

The Philadelphia Flyers, scuffling for most of March, knew they already had an uphill battle to reclaim their early-season form and get back into playoff position.

The hill seems even larger now.

The New York Rangers, inconsistent themselves most of the season, woke up in a major way Wednesday night, trouncing the Flyers 9-0 at Madison Square Garden, humiliating a rival and their former coach, Alain Vigneault.

“Couldn’t defend and couldn’t make a play,” Vigneault said. “I’m truly embarrassed.”

The Flyers essentially watched as Mika Zibanejad tied an NHL record with six points, including three goals, in one period, as the Rangers rolled to their largest margin of victory since 1986. And they did so without their full-time coaching staff behind the bench because of COVID-19 protocols.

“Embarrassing to be playing on that ice tonight, the way we played. We didn’t help our goalies at all,” Flyers captain Claude Giroux said. “I mean, there’s not a lot words to say. We know we’ve got to wake up and the good thing is we have a game [Thursday]. So, we need to answer [then].”

Brian Elliott allowed five goals on 13 shots, and Carter Hart allowed four more on 16 shots, as the Rangers scored seven in the second period alone.

“We obviously talked about it a little bit after the game, but everybody knows that it’s not acceptable,” Giroux said, “and there needs to be an answer.”

On Thursday, the Flyers will take on the New York Islanders.

“No doubt that we weren’t good tonight,” Vigneault said. “We’ll get to Long Island here and get ready.”

Philadelphia has just six points in its nine games played this month. And the team that won three of four to open the season, and had a four-game winning streak in January, now finds itself three points behind the Boston Bruins for the final playoff position in the East Division.

Sixers Bell Ringer: Philadelphia demolishes San Antonio in return home

Sixers Bell Ringer Season Standings:

Joel Embiid – 17
Ben Simmons – 7
Tobias Harris – 6
Shake Milton – 4
Matisse Thybulle – 2
Tyrese Maxey – 1
Dakota Mathias – 1

The city of Philadelphia received the fortunate news Saturday night that Joel Embiid’s knee injury was only a bone bruise and would not require more than a few weeks’ absence. The Sixers then celebrated Sunday night by putting forth their third-straight outstanding performance post-All Star Break, the team’s fifth-straight win overall.

Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich waved the white flag and emptied the bench in the third quarter. And who can blame him? The Sixers tallied an incredible 46 points in the third, scoring on 22 of 23 possessions in the period, and converted on 21 straight possessions carrying over into the fourth quarter. Philadelphia’s lead hovered around 40 points for quite some time in an eventual 134-99 win. It was the worst loss in Spurs franchise history. What a nice treat for the 3,000-plus fans who were finally able to return to the Wells Fargo Center. Who ya got for Bell Ringer?

Tobias Harris: 23 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover

Photo by Ned Dishman/NBAE via Getty Images

Tobias is one of the players who will have the ball in his hands more while Embiid is out, so it makes sense he tied a season-high with his seven assists against the Spurs, including on perfect lob to Dwight Howard in transition. Harris also paced the scoring for the club, shooting 10-of-18 from the field and finishing a team-best plus-36. The Sixers’ could-have-been-an-All-Star forward knocked down his jumpers, tore through Spurs defenders on his way to the rim, and sent Lonnie Walker through the spin cycle.

Seth Curry: 21 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 0 turnovers

Photo by Ned Dishman/NBAE via Getty Images

Seth was another guy who filled the Joel-less void, getting up a season-high 16 shot attempts. The strategy worked out beautifully for the Sixers, as the best Curry hit nine of those shots, including a 3-of-6 mark from behind the arc. Curry set up his teammates as well, most prominently finding Tony Bradley under the basket with a gorgeous left-handed wrap-around pass. Seth getting back to pre-COVID form would be very helpful for the Sixers as they look to stay in first without Embiid for a bit.

Ben Simmons: 14 points, 4 rebounds, 9 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers

After missing a couple of games due to his barber testing positive for COVID-19, Simmons returned to the court and was in full BenJammin’ mode. The Spurs wanted absolutely nothing to do with slowing Ben down in transition and he threw down more than one titanic one-handed slam. I also liked the sweet little baby hook Simmons unleashed for three buckets. It was a solid return to action for Ben, finishing 6-of-9 from the field and providing his usual high level of distribution.

Danny Green: 16 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks, 1 turnover

Danny kickstarted this whole thing tonight, hitting his first four shots, three of them 3s, and also converting a rare floater off the dribble. He would finish the evening 4-of-7 from downtown, while also playing solid defense with a pair of blocks. I could only remember one head-shaking “Danny Green play,” when he took a pass on the wing in transition and rather than getting the easy lay-up, dribbled it into a turnover. Otherwise, nothing but high marks for Mr. I Have 3 Rings.

Matisse Thybulle: 10 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals, 1 block, 0 turnovers

Photo by Ned Dishman/NBAE via Getty Images

Matisse Thybulle is the ghost story opposing offenses tell around the campfire. Philadelphia’s smiling ninja was once again a terror on the defensive end, doubling down at the perfect moment, flying out of nowhere for a block, or jumping the passing lane for the runout dunk. Oh, and Matisse apparently doesn’t miss shots anymore. He shot 4-of-4 from the field (now 13-of-15 across his last three games), including two triples.

Dwight Howard: 8 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover

Nobody benefited more from the fans returning than the man who had still been gesturing to empty arenas pre-game all season. Dwight brought the energy again, continuing a really nice stretch for play for him, crashing the boards and finishing with his thunder dunks. He also had an excellent high-low find to Mike Scott, and I don’t know how new this is, but I hadn’t caught his “goggles” celebration before for a nice pass by himself or a teammate. Just delightful Howard minutes all the way around.

Philadelphia 76ers’ Joel Embiid states case for defensive hardware in all-around gem vs. Utah Jazz

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid said his dominant performance in a 131-123 win over the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night was fueled by playing against Rudy Gobert.

Embiid, who had 40 points — including the game-tying 3-pointer with 6.5 seconds left to go with 19 rebounds, three assists, a steal and two blocks in 40 minutes — told ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan in December that Gobert shouldn’t have been third-team All-NBA last season over him. He also has said repeatedly he wants to win Defensive Player of the Year — an award Gobert is favored to win this season — and took exception to local media members saying he was “scared” of playing against the Jazz big man after missing Philadelphia’s loss in Utah last month with a back injury.

“As we saw tonight, it looks like I was very, very scared of him,” Embiid said, his voice dripping in sarcasm. “So, yeah, keep talking.

“But going up against him, one of my goals is to also be Defensive Player of the Year. So, you know, when you go up against those types of guys, he’s a great player, and you know, he does a lot for his team that don’t show up on the stat sheet … but when you go against those guys, you know, it brings something else to my game.

“I want to dominate. On the offensive end, but mainly on the defensive end, because that’s the goal I set for myself at the beginning of the year … those are the matchups that you want to go out there and just dominate and prove to everybody that, as a team, that we have a great team, and, individually, you should be up there when it comes to those rankings and stuff.”

Embiid was the difference at both ends for Philadelphia. While the Jazz outscored the Sixers 63-24 at the 3-point line, Embiid continued his season-long parade to the foul line — he took 13 himself, while the Jazz took 19 as a team, one of several things that led up to Jazz star Donovan Mitchell being ejected and multiple Utah players criticizing the officials after the game. Embiid was also everywhere defensively, repeatedly breaking up lobs to Gobert at the rim and, on one play, stopping a Mitchell drive only to immediately jump back up and block a Gobert dunk attempt.

But for Embiid, the lack of respect he got in award voting last season, after the Sixers exited the playoffs in a first-round sweep by the Boston Celtics, has been a source of motivation he has talked about publicly going back to the preseason.

He specifically, however, singled out Gobert as a source of frustration for being selected as the third-team All-NBA center ahead of him.

“I agree that Anthony Davis had a better season than me,” Embiid told MacMullan in December. “[Nikola] Jokic? That’s debatable. But Rudy Gobert? No offense, but he [averaged] 15 [points] and 13 [rebounds] and I had my 23 and 12, and that’s kind of a big difference. I think my numbers were better. But people didn’t want to vote for me because our team didn’t do well.

“That’s OK, because I will use it to motivate me so there is no chance that anyone can make that mistake again.”

When asked after Wednesday’s game if that snub played any role in his performance, he didn’t try to hide it.

“That’s pretty fair,” Embiid said. “But what motivates me is to win the game. Without winning, you know, you’re not part of those conversations when it comes to Defensive Player of the Year and MVP and all that stuff. That’s the first thing. I want to win. That’s all I care about.

“The past is the past. It’s unfortunate the way things happened last year when I wasn’t on there … it plays a huge role in my mentality this year, just wanting to destroy everything in my path. I’m playing against a lot of great players every single night. They’re really good at what they do. But wherever I’m needed to get the job done, defensively and offensively, that’s what I’ve got to do.”

Embiid, who will start Sunday’s All-Star Game in Atlanta, is having what easily is the best season of his career, averaging 30.2 points, 11.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists. He is one of the leading contenders for the MVP award, as Philadelphia enters the All-Star Break with a half-game lead over the Brooklyn Nets for the best record in the Eastern Conference.

But, after several games recently, Embiid has repeatedly said he’s more interested in winning Defensive Player of the Year than MVP — though, to be fair, he won’t be turning that honor down if it winds up coming his way.

And while Embiid said multiple times Wednesday that teammate Ben Simmons also deserves to be in the mix for the defensive award — speaking before the game, Sixers coach Doc Rivers said he believes Simmons should be favored, ahead of Gobert, for it — Embiid said he is focused on winning the honor because he has had that as a goal since entering the NBA.

“When I came into the league, I never thought I would be that good offensively,” Embiid said. “I always focused on the defensive side, and that’s always been my goal to win it. It’d be nice to do it, but like I said, that’s been my focus coming into the league, and obviously the scoring and the offensive side has taken over.

“I keep going back to the same thing — you can’t be in those conversations without winning. Right now, we’re winning, we’re first in the East, we beat the best team in the league. I got a bunch of great teammates that are doing a great job. You see [Sixers teammate Tobias Harris], that’s why I’m preaching for him to be an All Star, because you look at nights like tonight, he dominated in overtime. And you know, as a team, we just play all well together, we move the ball, and we defend well.”

Philadelphia 76ers’ Ben Simmons confounds on career night and loss to the Utah Jazz

Winston Churchill once said of Russia, “It is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.” If there is an NBA equivalent to that quote, it is Philadelphia 76ers star Ben Simmons.

There might not be a more confounding player in the NBA than Simmons. He has the size and strength of a center but plays with the speed and passing vision of a point guard. He can run and is able to guard all five positions on the court in a way that, arguably, no one else in the league can.

Yet at the same time, he won’t shoot 3-pointers — or often even midrange jump shots. And for all of the things he does to help winning, his fit offensively has become an endless source of debate in Philadelphia and beyond — especially playing alongside Sixers star center Joel Embiid.

Case in point: On Monday night, with Embiid a late scratch due to back tightness, Simmons lined up at center for the Sixers at the Utah Jazz, the team with the best record in the NBA.

So what did Simmons do? Have the best game of his career, putting up a career-high 42 points to go with nine rebounds and 12 assists — all while not taking a single shot outside the paint.

Ultimately, the Jazz prevailed, beating the Sixers 134-123 to claim the 19th victory in their past 20 games.

The story, however, was Simmons playing with the kind of aggression Sixers fans rarely see.

“I mean, if you put it that way, probably not,” Simmons said with a smile, when asked if he has ever been that aggressive offensively in his NBA career.

“There’s nights where I feel like I am dominant but it may not look like a 40-point game. I might have a triple-double and we might win by 20, whatever the case is. It might be on defense. [But] yeah, I definitely had to pick up the slack with Joel out.”

Simmons is right. His game is so often about doing things that don’t show up in the box score, be it the way he is able to lock down elite scorers on the other teams or set up his teammates for wide open 3-pointers.

But the reason Monday’s performance was so eye-opening is that, despite his prodigious physical gifts, Simmons rarely imposes his will on the game like he did against the Jazz, particularly in the first quarter. As Philadelphia raced out to a 42-35 lead, Simmons finished the quarter with 19 points and four assists, and he either scored or created 12 of Philadelphia’s 16 baskets.

Through his first 24 outings this season, Simmons had scored at least that many points in an entire game three times. On Monday night, he did it in the first 12 minutes — all while going up against Jazz center Rudy Gobert and, at times, by scoring right over the league’s best defensive player.

“We anticipated, once Joel was scratched, we were trying to create a lineup where Gobert would guard Ben,” Sixers coach Doc Rivers said. “That happened, and the key for us was getting stops and getting it to Ben and getting it up the floor.

“It just felt there was no way anybody was going to stay with him, especially a center. So I thought Ben handled that very well.”

Monday’s loss was the third straight for Philadelphia, which still remains on top of the Eastern Conference thanks to recent struggles from the other contenders. But in those three losses, Simmons has slowly looked to be more aggressive offensively. While that was clearly the case in Salt Lake City, he scored 23 points in Thursday’s loss at the Portland Trail Blazers — his previous season high — and followed that up with 18 points in Saturday’s loss at the Phoenix Suns.

Simmons had only scored as many as 18 points in a game twice all season before the Portland game. Now, he has done so in three straight.

And according to Simmons, that trend isn’t an accident.

“Honestly, I’ve been working on my mentality, my mental [game], a lot these past few weeks,” Simmons said. “I think my mindset … it’s not easy to do that, to change the way you play or certain things in the game that come natural to certain people.

play

0:20

Ben Simmons flushes a powerful jam as part of his career-best 19 points in the opening quarter.

“I feel like I’m figuring it out. Obviously, my scoring has been a lot higher the past five, six games. So as long as I can keep doing that and stay locked in and keep working on my mental [game], I think it’s scary.”

Over the past few seasons, there has been endless scrutiny of Simmons’ game — including the lack of a jump shot or the times he will disappear within Philadelphia’s offense.

As a result, nights like Monday, when Simmons was the best player on the floor, are all the more puzzling. Why, if he’s able to do this one evening, is he unable to do so more regularly? His previous coach, Brett Brown, openly pleaded with him to shoot 3-pointers. And he did — about once a month. Rivers has gone the other way.

The obvious question, in the wake of Monday’s performance — and Embiid’s absence — is whether Simmons can produce like this when playing alongside the league’s best interior scorer. According to Philly forward Tobias Harris, Simmons delivered that performance because the Sixers needed him to.

“Ben’s a guy, he pretty much evaluates the game as he’s playing, and you could see it immediately at the beginning of the game: He knew he could get by those guys with his speed. And we just started finding different ways to get him involved,” Harris said.

“I saw him working on some things, and that was getting in the post and using his body down there that probably aren’t as busy as him and shooting over them. It’s just an evolution of his game continuing to come together game after game, and he also just had that mindset today.”

“He wanted to do whatever he could to help us win tonight,” Harris explained. “And that was it, more than anything.”

For the Sixers to be a championship-level team, they’ll need the version of Simmons that showed up against the Jazz to be there when he is playing alongside Embiid. Before Monday night, however, it was unclear if Simmons was capable of putting up this kind of performance.

Now that he has done so, the question shifts to when — or if — he will do it again. So it goes for the NBA’s ultimate enigma.

Philadelphia Eagles expected to trade QB Carson Wentz soon, sources say

The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to trade Carson Wentz in the coming days in what would be the latest blockbuster quarterback deal to rock the NFL, league sources tell ESPN.

The most pertinent questions now become where, when and for what. But it could happen as early as this week, per league sources, even as the Eagles continue to insist to other teams that they would be happy to bring Wentz back to Philadelphia.

The Eagles are said to be looking for, in the words of one well-placed source, “a Matthew Stafford package” in return for Wentz. The Lions traded Stafford to the Rams last weekend for a third-round pick this year, two future first-round picks and quarterback Jared Goff, the player selected directly in front of Wentz as the top two picks in the 2016 NFL draft.

Among the teams that have expressed some level of interest in Wentz are the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts, sources told ESPN, although other teams also have called to gauge the market and see what a package for the Eagles quarterback would look like.

It is all part of an NFL offseason that will feature a flurry of quarterback moves, with teams rushing to make sure they are not left behind. Once Wentz is traded, league sources believe it could help set the asking price for other deals such as one involving New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold.

But a potential Wentz trade has been in motion for more than a week now, with the Eagles engaged in a flurry of trade conversations shortly after Stafford was sent to Los Angeles.

Those talks escalated as the week went on, but the Eagles keep telling teams that they do not plan on trading Wentz unless they get what they believe to he the appropriate compensation. The talks so far suggest they will, per league sources, which then would make 2020 second-round pick Jalen Hurts the Eagles starting quarterback for the coming season.

Although the Eagles do not feel rushed to trade Wentz, and nothing can be made official until the new league year begins March 17, Wentz does have a $10 million roster bonus due on the third day of the league year that Philadelphia would have to pay if their former first-round pick were on their roster. It is why a trade is expected to be agreed to long before then.

Wentz’s departure also would leave the Eagles with a $34 million dead cap charge, adding on to their challenging cap situation. But Philadelphia has known the cap challenges that were ahead for months and has a plan to address it, just as the Rams did with the departure and dead money on Goff.

New Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni, who was hired as Doug Pederson’s replacement, has not publicly committed to Wentz as a starter, because he is fully aware that there has been a possibility that the quarterback will not be on the roster in 2021.

Nevertheless, team sources say Sirianni recently had a staff meeting in which many of the offensive coaches expressed that they believed they can help Wentz regain his Pro Bowl form.

The Eagles being open to moving Wentz in a trade supports owner Jeffrey Lurie’s declaration that Pederson’s firing was not primarily related to Wentz’s decline in 2020.

There have been whispers over the years that Wentz struggled at times with his ability to forge relationships across the locker room, but others believe that could have been a natural by-product of him and the team not living up to the lofty expectations that followed the 2017 season.

By many public accounts, Wentz has handled himself with class throughout his time in Philadelphia and has received public support from many of the team’s leaders over the years, including most recently Fletcher Cox and Jason Kelce.

Despite efforts to ask for his reaction, Wentz was unavailable for comment. The Eagles declined comment.

But now it is all coming to a head, with the Eagles engaged in trade talks that multiple league sources believe will end up as the NFL’s next blockbuster quarterback trade.
