Paul McCartney’s Glastonbury show hailed as ‘phenomenal’ | Glastonbury 2022

Paul McCartney’s history-making Glastonbury set was hailed as one of the greatest headline performances of this generation as a crowd of more than 100,000 people gathered at the festival’s famous Pyramid stage to watch him play.

He was joined on stage by Bruce Springsteen and Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl – and even sang a duet with his old bandmate John Lennon, using special effects pioneered by the Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson.

Eyebrows had been raised when it was announced that McCartney, who turned 80 last week, would top the bill, becoming the oldest headliner in Glastonbury’s 52-year history.

But any doubts were shredded when McCartney finished a near-three hour set with a dramatic pyrotechnics display and a mass singalong to Let It Be, Hey Jude and Live and Let Die.

“It exceeded all expectations,” beamed Richard Martin, 75, part of the biggest crowd the Pyramid stage had ever seen.

He said: “Although I’m almost his age, I’ve never seen the Beatles – my wife has, she was one of those screaming teenagers – but he just nailed it.

“He was brilliant. Of course he’s a pro – he’s been at it for half a century. People behind us were in their 20s and they knew the songs backwards – that’s terrific testimony to the durability of the songs.”

Almost 4 million people tuned in to watch from home, and drew rave critical reviews. The Guardian’s Alexis Petridis said McCartney’s biggest hits were “about as thrilling as pop music gets,” while the Independent described it as “far and away the best this writer has seen on the Pyramid stage in 30 years of Glastonburies”.

The Sunday Telegraph hailed it as “one of the most thrilling, uplifting, banger-filled, star-studded sets this 50-plus-year-old festival had ever seen”.

Some festival-goers had camped out all day to get close to the Pyramid stage and it turned out to be a sensible decision. The crowd easily reached 100,000 people, ranking alongside one of the biggest Pyramid stage attendances alongside the Rolling Stones in 2013.

By 9pm, half an hour before McCartney took to the stage, it was impossible to get anywhere near the front as huge masses of people packed in from all corners of the 900-acre site.

“It was incredible. Musically it was up there with one of the most seminal moments of my life,” said James Jack, 35, after screaming along to the Bond hit Live and Let Die – a moment he said was fulfilling a childhood dream: “When you watch the films with your dad when you’re about six. That was a boyish moment for me, it really got me going. It’s the sort of thing you tell your grandkids about.”

Grohl, who had to pull out of a headline show in 2015 after breaking his leg, became Macca’s surprise sideman for I Saw Her Standing There, immediately followed by Band on the Run. Even before Bruce “the boss” Springsteen arrived, the crowd was levitating with delight.

Grohl and Springsteen, rock icons who had flown from the US especially for the set, looked utterly overjoyed to be joining McCartney on stage.

“It was phenomenal,” said 25-year-old Sorcha Ingram. “I had the time of my life. I’ve never experienced anything like it. I was obsessed with the Beatles when I was younger, it’s where my music taste stems from. This was the first time I’d watched him, and my first time at Glastonbury. It’s a historic moment, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

“He’s a proper legend,” said Keith Burnet, 59. “He actually did a really good gig that covered his whole career at his own time and pace.”

But he faced some criticism for showing a “very ill-advised” clip of Johnny Depp during his Glastonbury headline set.

A clip of Depp appeared on a large screen during My Valentine, a love song written for McCartney’s wife, Nancy Shevell.

One Twitter user wrote: “I am so sad that a man like Paul McCartney has chosen to give Johnny Depp a platform. Once again, domestic abuse survivors are completely mocked.”

McCartney and Depp are reportedly close friends, and the American actor featured in video footage during the 80-year-old’s recent Get Back tour in the US.

However, there was no getting away from the fact that most in attendance would not get the chance to see McCartney perform again – and that made the night more special.

The NME said he had thrown “absolutely everything he has – which is saying something for an actual Beatle – at Glastonbury 2022, sounding like a man who, frankly, knows he might not do this again.”

Galactic collision spawns ‘angel wings’ in phenomenal Hubble telescope image

The two merging galaxies in the VV689 system have been nicknamed the ‘angel wing’.  (Image credit: ESA/Hubble & NASA, W. Keel. Acknowledgement: J. Schmidt)

An angel gets its wings as two distant galaxies collide in a stunning new image snapped by the Hubble Space Telescope.

The galactic smashup took place in the VV689 system in the constellation Leo. The delicate wings formed as the two gravitationally bound objects collided and merged, deforming each other.

“The galactic interaction has left the VV689 system almost completely symmetrical, giving the impression of a vast set of galactic wings,” officials with the European Space Agency (ESA) said in a statement.

While the two galaxies in the VV689 system are truly colliding, other images can be deceiving.

“Unlike chance alignments of galaxies which only appear to overlap as seen from our vantage point on Earth, the two galaxies in VV689 are in the midst of a collision,” ESA officials said in the statement.

For example, in 2012, Hubble captured an image of what looked like two overlapping galaxies, called NGC 3314, seemingly in the midst of a collision. In that case, however, it was merely a trick of perspective, according to ESA

Many galaxy collisions are inevitable and were set in motion billions of years ago. By monitoring how galaxies move relative to each other, scientists can predict if and when galaxies will collide, according to NASA. For example, astronomers have predicted that in around 5 billion years, the Milky Way will inevitably crash into our neighboring galaxy, Andromeda, Live Science previously reported

The image of VV689 was discovered by the Galaxy Zoo citizen science project, in which hundreds of thousands of volunteers sift through an enormous trove of data collected by different telescopes, including Hubble, according to ESA.

After wading through images of galaxies, the public voted on a selection of noteworthy examples and submitted them for “detailed follow-up observations with Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys,” according to ESA. Some of the submitted examples included ring-shaped galaxies, galaxy spirals and a selection of galactic mergers, including VV689.

‘Phenomenal’ Omicron spread accounts for 40% of London infections

  • New COVID variant doubling every 2-3 days, minister says
  • Get a booster as two vaccines not enough, Britain says
  • PM Johnson’s difficulties mount, sterling currency falls

LONDON, Dec 13 (Reuters) – Britain said on Monday that the Omicron coronavirus variant was spreading at a “phenomenal rate” and now accounted for about 40% of infections in London, so people should get a booster shot because the double-vaccinated are still vulnerable.

Since the first Omicron cases were detected on Nov. 27 in the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has imposed tougher restrictions and told the nation on Sunday that a “tidal wave” of Omicron was coming. read more

Britain says that unless action is taken there could be a million people infected with Omicron by the end of the month.

“It’s spreading at a phenomenal rate, something that we’ve never seen before, it’s doubling every two to three days in infections,” Health Secretary Sajid Javid told Sky News.

“That means we’re facing a tidal wave of infection, we’re once again in a race between the vaccine and the virus.”

The pound fell 0.4% to $1.3225, while it was broadly steady against the euro at 85.29 pence. read more

Johnson, who is grappling with a rebellion in his party over measures to curb Omicron and an outcry over alleged parties at his Downing Street office during last year’s lockdowns, said people should rush to get booster vaccines to protect “our freedoms and our way of life”.

After COVID-19 was first detected in China in late 2019, he faced criticism for initially resisting lockdown.

He has also faced criticism for overseeing mistakes in transferring patients into care homes, and for building a costly test-and-trace system that failed to stop a deadly second wave.

Across the world, COVID has killed 5.3 million people, wiped out trillions of dollars in economic output and turned normal life upside down for many.

TWO VACCINES NOT ENOUGH

Data released on Friday showed that vaccine efficacy against symptomatic infection was substantially reduced against Omicron with just two doses, but a third shot boosted protection up to over 70%. read more

Javid said there had been no deaths yet confirmed in England and just 10 people hospitalised in England with the variant, but Omicron was probably behind around 40% of infections in London.

He said that while symptoms might be milder, the variant’s swift spread meant that unless the government acted then the health service could be overwhelmed.

“Even when a virus is mild, a small percentage of people from a very large number still can equal a high number of hospitalizations,” Javid said.

“Two doses are not enough, but three doses still provide excellent protection against symptomatic infection.”

The government wants to offer all adults a booster by New Year, an ambitious target given the Christmas holiday and that vaccinating 1 million people per day is around double the current 530,000 per day.

New vaccination sites will be set up to work seven days, the military will help, and some routine health appointments will have to be postponed.

Chris Taylor’s phenomenal 3-homer game keeps Dodgers alive in NLCS

Chris Taylor always seems to come through when the Los Angeles Dodgers need him the most.

Taylor etched his name into the MLB history books with a three-home run game to help the Dodgers stay alive in the National League Series against the Atlanta Braves, 11-2.

He also became the first player to hit three home runs in a game with his team facing elimination.

While starting at third base for the injured Justin Turner, Taylor stepped up with Los Angeles on the brink of watching the rest of the MLB Postseason from the couch.

He hit a two-run home run off Atlanta Braves starter Max Fried to put the team up 3-2 in the bottom of the second inning. Taylor’s home run followed A.J. Pollock’s from earlier in the inning. He would home run in the fifth inning – another two-run shot that pushed the Dodgers’ lead to four runs.

The history-making homer came in the seventh inning – a solo shot to put Los Angeles up 7-2.

He would get a chance to hit a fourth home run after Pollock’s second home run of the game but he would strike out trying to hit the record-breaking homer. He would finish 4-for-5 with four RBI.

No player has ever hit four home runs in a postseason game.

Babe Ruth, Jose Altuve, Kiké Hernández, Pablo Sandoval, Albert Pujols, Adrian Beltre, Adam Kennedy, George Brett, Reggie Jackson and Bob Robertson all hit the three-homer mark, according to MLB.com. Ruth did it in the 1926 and 1928 World Series.

Freddie Freeman got the Braves started with a two-run home run in the first inning but it was all the team could muster offensively. Freeman had one of the team’s five hits.

Eddie Rosario was 2-for-4 with a strikeout.

Dodgers starter Joe Kelly left in the middle of the first inning with an injury. Los Angeles used six other pitchers after him to close out the game.

Fried gave the Braves 4 2/3 innings but allowed five runs on eight hits.

NASA’s Mars rover scores ‘phenomenal accomplishment’

The NASA rover exploring Mars submitted new data on Wednesday, capturing its first successful attempt in coring a Mars rock sample.

Previous attempts at sampling Martian rocks failed to harvest as a result of the sample breaking. This time, officials are confident that the Perseverance rover captured sediment fragments based on photos from inside the collection tube.

Samples are collected with a rotary-percussive drill that runs a seven-foot robotic arm which extracts samples and collects them in a tube slightly thicker than a pencil.

The rock that Perseverance drilled into was roughly the size of a briefcase and was part of a ridgeline over half a mile long and full of boulders and rock outcrops, or rock formations visible on the surface.

Initial images revealed that Perseverance’s drill successfully collected and retained samples of the rock core.

“The project got its first cored rock under its belt, and that’s a phenomenal accomplishment,” said Jennifer Trosper, the project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. “The team determined a location, and selected and cored a viable and scientifically valuable rock. We did what we came to do. We will work through this small hiccup with the lighting conditions in the images and remain encouraged that there is sample in this tube.”

Rock samples from Mars stand to provide insight into the microbial life on the planet and reveal more about its climate and geological history.

Previous information gathered by NASA’s Mars missions found new information about the core of the planet based on seismic data, revealing more about Mars’s crust, mantel, and core.

NASA’s Perseverance Rover Successfully Cores Its First Mars Rock – “A Phenomenal Accomplishment!”

Perseverance’s Sampling and Caching System uses a rotary-percussive drill and a hollow coring bit at the end of its 7-foot-long (2-meter-long) robotic arm to extract samples slightly thicker than a pencil. Within the bit during coring is a sample tube. After completing yesterday’s coring, Perseverance maneuvered the corer, bit, and open end of the sample tube in order to be imaged by the rover’s Mastcam-Z instrument. The target for the sample collection attempt was a briefcase-size rock belonging to a ridgeline that is more than half-a-mile (900 meters) long and contains rock outcrops and boulders.

The initial set of images from Mastcam-Z showed the end of a cored rock within the sample tube. After taking these images, the rover began a procedure called “percuss to ingest,” which vibrates the drill bit and tube for one second, five separate times. The movement is designed to clear the lip of the sample tube of any residual material. The action can also cause a sample to slide down farther into the tube. After the rover finished the percuss-to-ingest procedure, it took a second set of Mastcam-Z images. In these images, the lighting is poor, and internal portions of the sample tube are not visible.

“The project got its first cored rock under its belt, and that’s a phenomenal accomplishment,” said Jennifer Trosper, project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. “The team determined a location, and selected and cored a viable and scientifically valuable rock. We did what we came to do. We will work through this small hiccup with the lighting conditions in the images and remain encouraged that there is sample in this tube.”

Commands uplinked to the rover earlier today will result in images of the corer and tube to be acquired tomorrow, September 3, at times of day on Mars when the Sun is angled in a more favorable position. Photos will also be taken after sunset to diminish point-sources of light that can saturate an image. The photos will be returned to Earth early in the morning of September 4.

If the results of this additional imaging remain inconclusive, the Perseverance team still has several options to choose from going forward, including using the Sampling and Caching System’s volume probe (located inside the rover’s chassis) as a final confirmation of the sample being in the tube.

The September 1 coring is the second time that Perseverance has employed its Sampling and Caching System since landing in Jezero Crater on February 18, 2021.

More About Perseverance

A key objective for Perseverance’s mission on Mars is astrobiology, including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will characterize the planet’s geology and past climate, pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet, and be the first mission to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith.

Subsequent NASA missions, in cooperation with ESA, would send spacecraft to Mars to collect these sealed samples from the surface and return them to Earth for in-depth analysis.

The Mars 2020 Perseverance mission is part of NASA’s Moon to Mars exploration approach, which includes Artemis missions to the Moon that will help prepare for human exploration of the Red Planet.
